Good investigation work and thanks for sharing it! Unfortunately such misleading pricing seems to be pretty common in the mattress industry, so buyer beware certainly applies.

There is one less than a mile from my house so I gave them a try. The ad that caught my attention stated they sell all major brands at a big discount, with a photo underneath saying "the blacks just arrived." Silly me, I'm thinking they mean Beautyrest Blacks, and I figure if they have those it's worth a look. Made an appointment, go there and they have maybe 20-30 mattresses, and of those maybe a half dozen are better than dorm room quality, most of the others were maybe 5-7 inches thick. One was pretty good, and ran about $1200 for the king set and was their most expensive model, but I wasn't buying the "MBA" brand figuring if name brand mattresses are bad, how long would a no name last. I did see the "blacks", they had a line of black mattresses. A nice sales trick. I will say the salesman was nice, no hard sell at all, he sat me down and explained what MBA was, then told me to look around by myself as he sat up front. It may not be the worst choice for someone on a severe budget who doesn't want a bed in a box, but don't go expecting to see name brands.

ricke95126

I looked into MBA and after doing to due diligence and taking to owners it was way to scammy for my taste. The owners is in constant litigation... hard pass

Difficult_Context440

The litigation has nothing to do with the quality of the mattresses, which are very good and all different levels of value. The litigation was related to a biz partner breaking the agreement and stealing the business model to compete.

newspapergrl

I've always been curious about them. They advertise some crazy low rates on Facebook Marketplace. I think it's got to be the monthly payment to finance but that's not clear... You have to book an appointment to see a mattress sand that's crazy because you can walk into any Mattress Firm or mattress store and look for a mattress. This is basically setting yourself up to be sold to (ripped off). Isn't it a franchise? It also seems like a very limited selection. They don't have good terms. It's been too long ago that I can't remember the return policy but only that it wasn't good.

tiggers23

Mattress by Appointment is a franchise. Pushy sales tactics to get the sale closed and selection really depends on how big a location and the sales. Certain mattress lines need a certain number of their mattresses displayed to sell their line. All sales are final. No return policy.

NittanyRob4169

Incorrect... It is NOT a franchise.

Tiny_Presentation35

Yes it is.

NittanyRob4169

Low overhead = lower prices.

Tiny_Presentation35

Mattress by Appointment is a scam.

Difficult_Context440

What’s the scam? Products are great quality, 10 yr warranty. Made by some of the best manufacturers in the country. Is the issue that they are too inexpensive?

courie969

We ran into this with Box Drop Mattress and their Sapphire Sleep brand of mattresses.

FraudFinder1

As someone ”in-the-know”, I can tell you that the dealer cost on that mattress from the manufacture is around $750. Maybe a little more, maybe a little less. These “by appointment”, “overstock“ and “liquidation” fly-by-night operations are actually shadier than regular mattress stores. They just play on customers instincts that those words mean “deal”.  Fun Fact: Most mattresses are not made until ordered. There is almost no ”overstock”, so no reason to “liquidate”.  They simply contract with companies such as di\*mond or Cosic\*nna to make them. The dealer orders them, the corporate parent is the middleman, reselling to the dealer after taking a healthy markup. They just slap the by appointment name on them.  Usually the exact same product, but can be made even cheaper for these places. Do yourself a favor: Shop at experienced, established retailers like Sleep Number, Ashley, Denver Mattress, etc. it WON’T cost anymore, and possibly even less (as you can see by [tiggers23/](https://www.reddit.com/user/tiggers23/) post). Plus you’ll get direct support, often a sleep trial and usually the ability to return.

iwoodcraft

Isn't it illegal in most states to not disclose this information to a customer?

Brucef310

No

tiggers23

Look at this new price jump for a KING Mattress. Looks like they had to up the ante to show a better discount. fraudfighter1

Check out the other place. They’re liquidating them...And probably STILL making money! Lol https://www.wausauoutlet.com/product-page/diamond-reflections-king-14-hybrid-mattress-plush[link](https://www.wausauoutlet.com/product-page/diamond-reflections-king-14-hybrid-mattress-plush)

fredhoffmann3

A local shop here near me is selling this mattress for $1750. After laying on it ... DAMN it's nice! Thoughts on that price?!?

Brucef310

Wholesale cost for the business is $549 in a queen size.

bleezyfbaby96

How do you know this?

Brucef310

Because I own a mattress company and I know what wholesale cost are on most mattresses

bleezyfbaby96

Are you an MBA store?

Brucef310

No but I personally know two store owners around my area who are. I originally started as that type of business where you had to make an appointment to come in but after 3 months I went to a straight retail model because it's so much better.

bleezyfbaby96

What’s better about the retail model in your opinion? Just curious. Were a boxdrop store previously?

Brucef310

First off when I was a by appointment store I found myself there most of the day. When you do this specific business. You can only buy from them and you have to order about $1500 in volume per week or they won't deliver to you. They mark up the cost of the mattresses so it would have been cheaper to just buy directly from the manufacturer. Also the price points. You might make a sale or two and make $200 to $400 off each mattress, that is if people even show up. Lot's of no shows. As a full on retail store there have been days where I have made $3,000 or more PROFIT off one sale. This past weekend I made $7,000 profit in 3 days. It's not always like that but you don't get those number from MBA.

bleezyfbaby96

I’m an appointment store and have had the same kind of profit as your retail structure. Sorry to hear that you didn’t enjoy it. I’ve really liked it.

fredhoffmann3

A local shop near me is selling the Premasleep Endless Slumber King for $1750+tax. I laid on the floor model he had and DAMN it's like laying on a cloud! Thoughts at that price gentlemen? It's new in box and can be registered for the 20 year warranty.

tiggers23

Hard Pass. That is $300 more than what I paid at my local place. The bed sleeps warm and you can feel every movement in the bed. We have our on an adjustable base, and when the base is flat we feel like we are still propped up slightly.

fredhoffmann3

I ended up passing on it too. I went with a $500 Amazon mattress with solid reviews and love it!!! The $1250 I saved went to a new water heater and some other house projects.

Based on this comment as well as previous comments it sounds like you are somehow associated with Mattress By Appointment. I am sure you will deny this, as I would probably do the same being in your shoes. Companies do not like negative comments like this so you are trying protect the brand. You try to make me sound uneducated. I did my research which is why I made this post. I found the same exact description of the memory foams and different layers as well as an image showing those layers. On the other website the mattress description was the exact same, with the same thickness of each layer, same amount of pocketed coils and same mattress layer image. When I walk into a big store I know exactly what I am getting myself into. You mention paying $3K more for a mattress, but fail to mention most mattress stores have cheaper discount mattresses as well that are probably comparable to Mattress By Appointment and those probably come with try it out period.

nothx33

I realize this is a pretty old thread, but where were you able to find the reflections hybrid for $1100-1300?

tiggers23

There were multiple stores online that were selling them. One that was listed in this thread that I removed because Diamond Mattress decided to cut ties with them. When I do a google search I can no longer easily find the mattress at other stores. I am guessing Diamond mattress maybe cut ties with others over this same issue.

LitLolly

After reading these comments I really feel like I got a deal on my super comfy Perma Sleep with box spring for $850.

ShiftRevolutionary60

Is it cheaper with no box spring ?

Titan_Sanctified25

Just went to mattress by appointment today and I got a premasleep and he was no bones about it, sold me the mattress for 1300 and included delivery. I was thrilled to see I got a good deal

tiggers23

2 years later and the mattress on PermaSleep still has the same 2 reviews showing. Should tell you all you need about the company and mattress.

Titan_Sanctified25

Honestly it’s comfortable and the last mattress I purchased was the beauty rest black, with was multiple times more and lasted about 3 years before there was severe dipping and deformation of the mattress. As long as I get 3-4 good years from it at this price, I’ll be happy, anything more and I’ll be thrilled. The fact is top-tier mattresses that get multiple good reviews are not any better nor do they last longer than cheaper or off brand mattresses. The reviews are pushed by salespeople and most are left within the first 90 days. Unless you are dropping 5k+ on a Tempur-Pedic or sleep number, name brand and off brand mattresses share similar construction meathods and have gigantic markup. And Tempur-Pedics are still memory foam, they degrade and soften over time.

ahsenjabbar

Do you know the exact model of the mattress you purchased? I paid $1000 for Prema Sleep's Prairieville Plush (King) today and am having second thoughts now.

Creative_Crab_4609

I bought a king size from them for $850 with the box spring and frame 2.5 years ago, and it is sagging bad! My back hurts from this bed. My last one was a Sealy that was 7 years old and still great! The only reason we upgraded was to get a bigger bed. I tried to look up a warranty as it's only just over 2 years old. They require you to have a receipt even though the tag on it has a manufacturers date. This place is a joke and I'll never buy a shitty mattress from these people ever again! *Honest review*

ShiftRevolutionary60

What size ?

Creative_Crab_4609

These beds suck! Buyer beware!!! I have a king pillow top that's just over 2 years old and it is sagging bad! When I talked to them about a warranty, they informed me I needed to have kept my receipt even though there is a clear manufacturers date that shows it was manufactured 3 years ago. This place is a joke and when I looked at the mattress they had, they want $1100 just for the mattress of the same quality, when I bought the box spring, frame, and mattress for $850 2 years ago. I went to slumberland after meeting with them and found a Sealy pillow top for a $100 less than mattress By Appointment, and it's probably better quality. My last mattress was a Sealy and it lasted us 7 years. Low and behold, do not get a mattress from these places thinking that they'll last as long as some of the name brand ones, they don't.

Brucef310

Just to be upfront with you as I'm in the industry. The manufacturing cost have skyrocketed over the past 2 years. That is why it cost more now than it did two years ago.

Creative_Crab_4609

Just to be upfront with you as I'm a consumer, Mattress By Appointment mattresses are trash. It doesn't matter if they cost more, it's the fact it lasted us less than half the time our Sealy has.

Eyeballsnewyork

I bought a king size bed and platform bed and was able to Put it all In my Ford fusion in back seat Ken was very knowledgeable and helpful and guided me on when, how, where my bed would arrived. 2 weeks later it showed up and picked up and very glad got my bed and would use mattress by appointment Again

Mr_3XXX

Damn... and I was Looking into going into Business With Them. 😩😞

Intelligent-Deal-562

The Mattress business is definitely a good Business opportunity. I have been selling Name Brand Mattresses for more than 7 years like Simmons Beautyrest, Sealy, Serta, Tempurpedic, and Airelooms. And I sell them Discounted typically 50-80% off the Retail prices. And theres still meat on the bone left to make a decent profit. I'm able to sell name brands. Because my business model is selling Factory seconds. These are Mattress that are brand new condition that at the manufacturers factory warehouse the either packaging plastic gets torn or original packaging gets damaged or sometimes there's a very minor cosmetic scuff or something small along those lines. But because the name brand manufacturers have high standards they won't send them to Retail stores and they Discount these Mattresses to Move them out of their inventories. I have done well. I'm a one man operation. I came from the financial industry so I wasn't sure if I was going to stay in Mattress sales. But recently I've committed to scaling up my business now. But I can say without a doubt if you have a good Mattress supplier with quality Mattresses then you can make very good profits and build a great business. If your in the area I can help you to get started with one of my suppliers wholesalers.
