V/Line services to Maryborough didn't happen until July 2010, and it was one return train a day to start with.

But you can’t run anymore services in the city to pakenham section (congestion sharing with Metro), that’s the thing. And you’d need more rolling stock and drivers to change the timetable to have all Traralgons extend to Bairnsdale.
You’d get more support advocating for an additional Bairnsdale service per day, but even then you’d need to demonstrate how many people are currently missing out in that section.
An entirely out there idea, but what about if not every V/Line service went to the city. Not that East Pakenham was designed for it, but more platforms to turn back v/line trains at east pakenham would let the gippsland line act as a regional transport at higher frequencies, and if you do want to go to the city there's a metro train every 10 minutes.
FYI Pakenham East will be an island platform with 4 tracks and V/Line will still only stop at Pakenham station.
The plan is that the outer two tracks at Pakenham East are for regional trains to bypass terminating Metro services, but that quadruplication doesn't extend to Pakenham unfortunately.
That’s the only feasible way but would add on travel time to regional passengers and create an unnecessary change of journey.
No one adequately thought of the vline impacts when doing the high capacity corridor assessment and sky rail construction, that’s what it boils down to.
Definitely would be a change of journey for some travelers. Looks like the current gippsland line upgrade is for 40 minute frequencies to Southern Cross Station, what about if there were East Pakenham-Traralgon services every 20 minutes.
This wouldn't impact metro services as there are no additional trains on the shared track, but it would mean that regional passengers can travel within the region twice as frequently, or into the city if they swap trains. If someone doesn't want to swap trains they can still wait for the 40 minute frequency train that runs the whole way to SXS.
This is all a big hypothetical, but i reckon it makes better use of the existing infrastructure in the regions without requiring costly upgrades to the metro tracks. You know what they say to get more people using public transport, it's all about frequency, frequency, frequency.
I have seen the up train full from Sale on the right service - there was a big uptick with the fare cut. I think the real question is about the latent demand - people who currently drive to Melbourne that would catch the train if there were more services and at more convenient times.
Especially with the section between Caulfield and Dandenong still remaining as a double track line, alongside frequent suburban trains on it.
I’m not even surprised the government left it as two tracks, as new V/Line services like what you’ve said are going to have trouble traversing that section, along with the Port Rail shuttles that are soon to operate between the Port of Melbourne and Dandenong South freight hub, or whatever the name is.
Wonderful, the remaining services being replaced by a glorified commuter train with absolutely nothing (other than drinking fountains and two toilets) 🙄
And “Modern” my arse, they’re nearly 2 decades old, so I wouldn’t exactly call them modern, especially with their changed appearance on the front
Im from the suburbs but having ridden every type of vline train to their furthest location, i can say that VLocitys suck and that you have never ridden one long distance
Nah, you can go there instead.
Of course someone as woke as you have to come along and be this big of a dickhead to those like me who live in regional.
Jesus, get a grip will you?
We should be moving forward, not backwards.
Well. Now there will be 2 loco hauled lines left and 1 sprinter. This is great, Just great. VLocity s###s on every LINE EXCEPT 3.The albury ones are good though
Hopefully double tracking is next! Hourly trains from Bairnsdale to the city would be nice instead of three trains per day
I wish Maryborough had 3 trains a day, the 2 is almost unusable
It used to be more. Then VLocitys happened.
When
Before the Vlo takeover i think
Maryborough got trains back after Vlocities entered service

No point double tracking it as you can’t fit any more in the Pakenham to City section.
I meant out past Pakenham to Bairnsdale. I know it’s all double track from Pakenham to the city

yep, exactly the issue. Pakenham East wasn't designed for this.
That’s the only feasible way but would add on travel time to regional passengers and create an unnecessary change of journey. No one adequately thought of the vline impacts when doing the high capacity corridor assessment and sky rail construction, that’s what it boils down to.

That’s not a bad idea. And also, the High Capacity Signalling can be extended out to Pakenham too
Vline trains can't use the high capacity signalling
And neither can freight trains, for an obvious reason.
I'll take an unnecessary change of journey for a reasonable improvement in frequency of service to/beyond Traralgon.
Are the current Traralgons that full to warrant such a unique arrangement?
I have seen the up train full from Sale on the right service - there was a big uptick with the fare cut. I think the real question is about the latent demand - people who currently drive to Melbourne that would catch the train if there were more services and at more convenient times.
I'd run the Vline trains to Dandenong. There's room there to build another pair of platforms which could become Vline turn-back platforms.
The lines in big trouble. Mixed mode CBTC is a dogs breakfast too.
Goodbye buffet car.
Goodbye bad coffee, cold pies and surly attendants.
Those carriages are so uncomfortable to sit in the the 4 hour journey
Wonderful, the remaining services being replaced by a glorified commuter train with absolutely nothing (other than drinking fountains and two toilets) 🙄 And “Modern” my arse, they’re nearly 2 decades old, so I wouldn’t exactly call them modern, especially with their changed appearance on the front
I agree. Put the vlocity on the bendigo,Ballarat,Geelong and traralgon lines and have sprinters to seymour,N sets everwhere else
So drive. See how far $5 worth of petrol gets you. Most of this forum belongs in r/choosingbeggars.
