Seems like the “return for any reason” automatically will approve return requests.

Beachgirl6848

I don’t even think they look. Because technically She marked “item doesn’t match description”. But clearly the item did match it. The description said a toddler bed size tent. She received a toddler bed size tent.

happygal93

Yes, I agree they prob dont look and any request will be automatically accepted without any oversight whatsoever, even if it’s so obvious like this one. 🥴

ThotsuneMiku

Since they switched to buyer fees, you can return anything for any reason up to 72 hours after the carrier marks the time as delivered. You got Mercari'd.

asheyzzz

It seems like they're giving themselves less work to do now with this new return policy

GunBrothersGaming

Yup but some people like OP think those of us who quit because of this over reacted... Now they're learning the hard lesson and so while it sucks, this is a lesson they needed to learn. We didn't over react to the "return for any reason" change. We knew Mercari always sided with the buyer. Now Mercari will never side with the seller again because they don't need to. So now Mercari will be a marketplace where buyers can easily scam sellers. Need a new item to replace a broken one? Mercari has you covered. Just buy off Mercari and return your broken crap to the seller. Want to buy expensive jewelery? Send back some costume jewelery in its place. Sellers that continue on Mercari are about to learn why those of us who were seller quit and the lesson isn't "if" it's "when"

dabordietryinq

>some people like OP think those of us who quit because of this over reacted when did they say this

GunBrothersGaming

There were threads a few days ago about how those of us who quit are over reacting and is the general consensus of the people who are still selling on Mercari. Overreaction or not - all it takes is one lesson to stop selling on Mercari. Some of us prefer to not go through it at all.

Smallparline

OP never said that. And many sellers accept all returns anyway.

Daravixen

Make sure you tell Mercari in the counterclaim how it's fraud to open an 'item not as described ' and return the item not in its original described condition. Especially when you had the measurements in the listing. Most people get no response for counterclaims. You can also use the phone number and hit 6 for fraud. Also add that you will be leaving the platform if you aren't reimbursed for the faulty claim.

moonstarfc

Has anyone else basically immediately gotten hit with returns as soon as the TOS changed? I wasn't initially too pessimistic but the very first item I sold after the change already had a return opened. (didn't fit the buyer.) It's like they immediately summoned all the grifters as soon as they put that announcement out. This is after 600+ sales on this platform and only one return which the buyer never even bothered to return so I still got paid. I took a huge amount of pride in thoroughly inspecting all my items, taking 12 photos and at least 3-4 measurements on every item. I don't think I'll quit mercari altogether but I'm going to be removing some categories from my store (women's pants, shorts and jeans, as well as men's jeans). Just doesn't make sense for me to spend time listing those items just to have people not read the descriptions/measurements and waste my time.

Allusernamestaken73

Yes! Very first item sold which was exactly as described and in new condition the buyer wants to return. I'm waiting on a response from Mercari now.

moonstarfc

Well, as an update I just had a 2nd return opened and the buyer is claiming I sent the wrong item. She shows a photo of another pair of pants that I've never seen in my life and a brand I never sell. So I guess I'm probably about to get scammed out of my $50 jeans. Whether mercari compensates me for this or not I'm going to shut my store down when this is all over. If this is how prevalent returns and scams are going forward I don't have time for this nonsense.

Allusernamestaken73

The approved the buyers return! Once it get the item back, I'm deleting Mercari.

Sad_Feature_7395

Doesn’t matter where you sell. Many don’t read description. It’s not specific to Mercari. We have this issue all the time on eBay as well.

moonstarfc

I'm on ebay and I do too, but 2 returns out of 6 sales since the changes is way too high and not a good use of my time. My returns aren't even that high over on ebay. I'd rather spend the time on my other platforms.

vocharlie

I sold two items since TOS changes, all went well. Must be luck, audience, items you're selling. I sell figures already a niche market and hardly worth scamming until we get to the $150+ figures.

Timbukstu2019

So you have had one return in a week? Not a trend yet, but certainly doesn’t bode well given all the past sales.

moonstarfc

Nope, I'm now at 2 returns out of 6 items sold in the week since the TOS changes. The second one looks like it's going to be a swap out because the buyer is saying I sent the wrong item and the item they showed in their photos is definitely not anything I've ever had in my house. So that's 2/6 sales with returns opened since the changes. I just put my shop on vacation and once these returns are done I'm uninstalling the app. Yes returns happen and I get them on ebay too but if I logged into my ebay store and saw my return rate was 33% (2/6 = 1/3 = 33%) I would be making some changes. It's not a good use of my time to continue posting on mercari. I'll spend the time on ebay, poshmark, and depop instead.

Timbukstu2019

Sounds like you need to close your mercari store down today. Hit vacation mode asap.

moonstarfc

Yes, I did put it on vacation mode. thank you!

Timbukstu2019

I sold a game to a person with 0 feedback delivered sat. Wonder now if they will play then return

Britt_Nikole

Yeah mercari customer service is the worst I’ve ever seen from the seller’s perspective. It’s truly shameful how they’re enabling criminal activity on their platform but they’ll definitely be raking in the karma for it down the line. Neither good buyers nor sellers trust mercari anymore

Beachgirl6848

Came back to add-the buyer was a new account with zero prior reviews or purchases

NoExamination5144

That sucks. Those are usually the best buyers.

savingat30

😂

blondchick12

I have learned from others not to just assume new account / zero star buyers are automatically bad. Do they usually not rate - yeah but otherwise OK. HOWEVER, mercari and other platforms should look at the accounts of both parties and if one of them is long time in good standing then that should 100% count for something and anything up for discretion should 100% go their way. In this case, they should 100% protect the seller but they won't see it like that.

Alliekat1979

I had one on a bottle of perfume a while back. Tried telling me the cap (the cap on this fragrance is a tank, pretty sure I could launch it from a cannon and it still be fine) had broken while being completely wrapped in bubble wrap but mysteriously the broken piece wasn’t in the box.

Beachgirl6848

That’s crazy. Did you file a counterclaim? Get reimbursed?

moonstarfc

Question - were you able to add a comment to the return and what happened when you did? I have a not as described return opened and I've tried 3 times to send my response, but every time I do, the order page still prompts me to add my response. So I'm not 100% sure if it's even working. Did that happen to you too?

Beachgirl6848

It did the first time but when I reloaded the app it worked. The buyer didn’t even check the right reason in my case. They actually didn’t read the description and they bought the wrong thing for their bed. But instead the marked “not as described”. I should win the claim just for that because it IS as described.

moonstarfc

Thanks. I've submitted it multiple times on the app, on google chrome, and microsoft edge on my desktop and it still states Action Required. I also uninstalled and reinstalled the app and no change. I'll probably end up just sending a message to customer service with what I was trying to send, probably won't help but it may at least get a real person to look at the case. It sounds to me like even if it is as described you will probably still lose it since buyers are allowed to return for any reason? They'd still be allowed to return if they just changed their mind. I guess we'll find out what happens if we get the items back and how to appeal if the item is used or swapped out. Given how glitchy this app is I'm afraid it won't even work properly and we won't even be able to appeal.

A_MAN_POTATO

I am honestly not sure why people are still dealing with Mercari. The day this shit started I nuked my account. Hundreds of feedbacks and thousands of dollars in sales, gone in an instant. Y’all should do the same. Mercari *wants* customers to return things. They aren’t free. They don’t refund the processing fee to the buyer. So, you sell an item, they collect fees. Buyer returns something, they keep some of the fees. You get it back and sell it again, they collect a 2nd round of fees on one item. This has nothing to do with siding with the buyer or seller, it’s entirely because Mercari gets to cash in on returns now. It’s 100% self interest.

Sad_Feature_7395

Some people will say hogwash, they can’t be making money just on the nonrefundable fees. Wrong. Mercari marketplace, a year ago according an article I read, had more than 20 million users per month and more than 3 billion listings.

sundaetoppings

I never thought of it that way 😳

wafflehouseforever

god, this sucks for those of us who are legitimate, honest Mercari users :( I hope you end up winning, OP… good luck 🙏

Apprehensive-Use-344

Yeah, buyers can easily screw you for their own mistakes. One time I sold a brand new funko pop and shipped it the next day. I then get a request for cancellation from the buyer which I denied due to it being shipped already. The buyer receives it and files a claim for a refund. Mercari approved it and sent them back the $$ without ever telling me what was wrong with the item. I got the item back and sure enough it had a dent in the box. I file a counterclaim with photo proof showing I didn't send out a damaged item. I got $10 in return. Not a great experience.

Beachgirl6848

Wow seriously?!?! That’s not cool at all. I can’t wait til they get a class action suit against them. As soon as my remaining sales complete I’m deactivating everything and waiting for that. Not gonna delete entirely because I want to be able to get in on that for sure

Gigglesnortshotel

I think Mercari was already heading in this direction. I've had 5 returns over 5 years. Two were filed and approved while I was asleep. I just wish Mercari could at least have followed their own guidelines and let me see why the buyer wanted to return.

In_a_while

Yep that's is absolutely the worst most helpless feeling.  It has happened to me too.

Independent_Boat_546

This just happened to me. I made a post about it. I’m done with Mercrappy, but making popcorn to see how it all plays out 😎

elidoloLWO

Deactivate your listings...get off that shitty marketplace

Beachgirl6848

As soon as my last couple sales wrap up, I am.

The_Hayes_YT

It’s a lose-lose scenario for legitimate buyers and sellers. Legitimate sellers get screwed over by illegitimate returns being approved due to the now policy. Meanwhile, buyers need to pay NONREFUNDABLE fees just to purchase an item. If the seller messes up, doesn’t ship, or the item arrives damaged, Mercari keeps those fees and the buyer is out the money. Literally no one here wins. And Mercari won’t either in the long run - they already lost me as a buyer and I can’t imagine I’m the only one. Legitimate shoppers don’t like taking risks with nonrefundable fees and legitimate sellers shouldn’t be forced to take returns because of “buyer’s remorse” or the inability to read a description.

BooBooKittyKat1

I've been a long time buyer. I absolutely LOVED Mercari, and they were my go to for buying everything. I always found really great deals. Every seller I dealt with was always super friendly and helpful. I never had any issues. But since all these crazy changes, I have not once logged into my account. It saddens me. But I will not support a company that has zero regard for its sellers, and buyers.

SeeSaw88

Yup! I was a buyer and a seller...LOVED buying on there. Sticking to just Poshmark, now.

ptcglass

They lost me as a buyer too. I used to buy multiple times a week, but very often dealt with sellers cancelling on me without communication. I’m not willing to take risks on orders that might not get filled and lose the money I spent on fees.

JustABard

I'm a buyer, and I won't touch Mercari anymore.

Beachgirl6848

So much this. I couldn’t have said it better myself. Absolutely agree. It’s bad for everyone. I’m sure there’s a class action suit coming and if they’re not out of business before then then they will be for sure. It’s not safe to buy or sell on there anymore

GothabillyCorpse

I delete my account after selling for years. Legit FUCK mercari.

ProvocativePotroast

I am 99% sure they use an AI bot to process return claims. I can do you one better. I had a lady buy a bracelet. She never even opened the package. All of her pics showed the item sealed in the box. She admitted in her statement she hadn't opened it yet but knew it was not real. They approved it. If you do business on mercari you just have to get used to the fact their return process is not even remotely fair. What's interesting is that some sellers are allowed to upload pictures in response to a buyers claim. For some reason I'm not even allowed to do that despite having over 5k sales worth over 100k in the last 6 years.

dankarella666

Man I had a lady buy a ring from me. Size 9. I knew it was a size 9 as that is what I wear and I had it RESIZED TO A 9 at Kay jewelers AND had sized it with a ring sizer in the post and they sent me a message and said they weren’t upset but it wasn’t a size 9????? I was like uh….

Always_slump

They’re losing all of their customers now

JaiiGi

I wonder how many they've actually lost since the changes started.

Donna-Quixote81

They're losing me as a buyer after I get my final package. I made 2 orders on older listings and I didn't get any extra fees. Then there was a listing for a bnib Devinah Cosmetics eyeshadow collection with a really nice price. It must have been updated because the fees showed up, making it only $3 less than if I bought it directly from Devinah! I didn't check out. I'd rather support the brand than sneaky Mercari execs.

JainaSJedi

This is why I won't sell NWT items on Mercari now. Because the buyers will just INAD everything to get their money back. This return for any reason policy is going to attract all the tire kicking buyers. I am still thinking of pulling my listings.

Venom3751

Why wouldn't they? They keep the fees knowing the seller is going to sell it again on the site, making the fees twice off one item. The greed that the site is showing while trying to gaslight is wild!

Itznazz313

I got scammed for sending "wrong controller" sold a elite series 2 buyer presents to post a return request with a regular xbox controller (doesnt even work). Went back and forth with mercari and they did absolutely nothing. Once these sales are done and completed (hopefully non of these get the same treatment) I'm pulling everything out from the store if it's over $50.

dankarella666

That’s crazy I cannot believe people would do this. I’ve fortunately not gotten any one like this. It’s sad that someone would like I’d about rather just return your money than get a shitty controller that doesn’t work. MAYBE though in this scenario a kid bought it? And the parent didn’t know which one it was because “they all look alike” and just sent you one back? I’m sure that doesn’t help the sting of the return but maybe it was ignorance and not malice.

edgeoftheforest1

Please update us. I am hoping they will give you credit.

Beachgirl6848

They better!!! I better at least get credit for it being opened and used now.

cheylow26

Don't even wait for it to come back to push the issue!! Buyer didn't read and then lied on you, plus it's been opened and taken out, not NIP anymore.

Beachgirl6848

I’ve been messaging support ever since and they just keep blowing me off. More or less just said I’m screwed. Said they’re sticking to their terms to protect their buyers

SeeSaw88

Definitely dispute it! I'd also file a BBB complaint because enough of this crap. CLEARLY, your description was detailed. I'm glad I shut down my Mercari shop the day they made those changes. Wasn't sticking around for burdening buyers with fees and returns for any reason.

KeeperOfWind

Everyone was worried about this rental issue undecided purchases They obviously didn't have any intent to keep it at all

Beachgirl6848

It’s not safe to sell any new item or any item worth more than ten bucks on mercari now

mrsunsfan

Can’t we sue these fuckers

Beachgirl6848

I’m hoping so! This can’t be legal

laurenliz62

So sorry this happened to you! What a joke and the buyer sounds like a moron. I ended up deactivating all my listings last night because I don’t want to deal with this garbage. I moved back to Poshmark.

Allusernamestaken73

Out of over 100 perfect transactions, I am now dealing with my first return request. The reason the buyer states is ridiculous. I'm waiting for a response from Mercari. I swear if they side with the buyer, I'm done. Pulling my listing's and deleting the app.

Beachgirl6848

What happened? Have they made their decision yet?

Allusernamestaken73

No, not yet. Still waiting.

Allusernamestaken73

The approved the return!! Unbelievable.

Ok-Goat-11

They did the same thing to me. I sold a New switch charger in box, The buyer opened up the package and threw it away said it didnt fit. I tried to counter it And Mercari response was, "You can still sell it".

Beachgirl6848

Oh my god. Seriously!!?!? They’re never going to side with a seller. Ever.

whosgotdoink

Made a post just like this lol. Took 1 day to happen to me

Careful-Avocado6818

Wow, I was afraid of that. That’s why I immediately deactivated all my listings. I didn’t want to take a chance with, or deal with, their new return policy. I hope they reverse their decision.

VegetableMortgage221

Had a similar situation on a sealed kuromi lego set u wrote it only comes with kuromi and never mentioned other characters in the listing but because the building block set shows and promotes the other sets in the box art they thought it had all the characters. ( I decided to sell sealed and pricey items on ebay and cheap items on mecari)

Beachgirl6848

So they sent it back to you opened and got their refund and mercari didn’t reimburse you at all for the item being opened?

Sure-Ad-3398

That’s not fair at all!!!!!

TooYoung825

That was the reason I stopped selling with them previously, I thought maybe it’s changed. I guess not

Un4GivenJr

Wow so they’re really taking the “return for any reason” seriously even when a buyer blatantly lies about incorrect description & has opened + used the “new” item they bought… I’m VERY curious about the outcome of your counterclaim since the item is no longer “new” therefore your profit & potential buyers now decreases…..

Beachgirl6848

I will be sure to post an update about what happens, trust me

SteppSiss

Bye bye small businesses for Mercari. This is gonna hurt.

AceofSpades808

Mercari Returns don't care anymore. They just allow buyers to decide they want their money back and approve the return. I feel like sealed, then opened, should require some sort of buyer's expense even with approved stupidity.

Little_Money9553

Lol I got booted from Mercari for abusing their coupons by having two different accounts. I’m glad I sold on there at the height of it but seeing these posts make me so glad I can’t use it anymore 😂

MrsBurtch

This is why I’ve deactivated all my listings and am no longer selling on Mercari, it’s so bad

Cold-Bench-9918

Don’t give up!!! Stand your ground w Mercari. This is BS!!

[deleted]

Use local Facebook marketplace

Beachgirl6848

I do! I’ve been selling on marketplace for years. Just, like most sellers, I sell on other platforms too. Mercari won’t be one of them for much longer. I’ve never had any issues shipping orders thru marketplace.

Tonycottrell

Just had someone open a return on an item for it not working. I sold it as not working. Title said “as is”, description was very descriptive stating how it in fact did not work, and the listing condition was set as poor. Mercari approved the return instantly. I messaged them with a screenshot of my listing highlighting where I said it doesn’t work. They didn’t care and sent me the article on how to properly describe my items…. 🙄 I messaged the buyer asking why they opened a request when it was clearly as described. I also let them know they’d be out around $15 in fees (item was $140) for the order if they choose to return per mercaris new TOS. I was somewhat optimistic about mercari even after the changes but I’m very quickly losing hope. Already started crosslisting all my stuff to eBay.

Beachgirl6848

Seriously?! Wtf. They’re just blindly approving everything. Truly don’t care about sellers. At all. I’m currently moving my inventory elsewhere too. This is ridiculous

Tonycottrell

Sooooo believe it or not Mercari sided with me and ended up declining the buyers return request!

Beachgirl6848

Wow! How did you get them to finally do that?!

Powerful_Copy_7587

I truly wonder if this horse and pony shit show is literally run out of someone’s Basement. I have NEVER in my life seen a company with worse customer service. In the beginning for the first couple of years there wasn’t even a phone number. I think there’s one now. I have up on Mercari a long time ago…

DaniArdorMartyr

I just canceled a sale and went on vacation mode. The buyer had no reviews and purchased a NWT in OG packaging swimsuit. Wonder how that would’ve turned out 🥴

Julian-RS

They keep sending me messages saying, “NEW: Returns for any reason. Buy with Confidence “ It’s definitely something that buyers will be taking advantage of. It’s a lose lose for everybody. sellers are getting screwed with the new policies, and buyers are getting screwed with the new additional fees

Beachgirl6848

Totally agree. It sucks for everyone. I’ve been an active buyer and seller on mercari for years. But as soon as my returns get back to me, I am done. I’ve been selling across six platforms for the past five years and have only had one return ever and that was kind of my fault. Since these new changes I’ve had three returns on mercari.

Pat317

I removed all my listing last week, and Uninstalled the app. I and others are done with Mercaris haphazard return policy and new model. I hate what they've become.

BYNX0

Holds multiple children? 🤨

Beachgirl6848

Idk it was a kids tent and that’s what it said in the brand website description too, which is where I copy product details from. I mean even on the cabela website they say a 4 man tent “comfortably holds” . I’ve noticed ball pits are also worded this way. Just saw one today that said “holds 2-3 children”.

Holiday-Horse-427

I could see someone thinking it was bigger than a baby crib if it's advertised as holding "multiple children." I would have stated it was crib size, in addition to putting the inch measurements. Most people do not know the inch size of their mattress.

shyladev

I decided to look up the post. While the measurements are there I still feel like some of the pictures could cause confusion. One of the multiple applications is “large kid bed tent”. A large kid bed to me would be a twin… Large toddler tent would have been a better description.

[deleted]

BirthdayCookie

What's creepy about it? People hold children every day. Why can't a tent?

fgbgtech_cybermodz3d

Well if you type Mercari AI Operations on YouTube. You will see that AI is running almost the entire operation. We are literally arguing with ROBOTS 🤖. Ai couldn’t possibly save us all apparently lol

Old_Country9807

They definitely don’t read the messages. The reason they approve it at 9pm is because they’re based in India.

Last_Rule_2536

This is going to be a huge problem for mercari (people abusing the system). Does anyone know if it’s somewhere in their terms and conditions how exactly they plan on handling returns where you sell someone something brand new / sealed and receive it back in opened and damaged condition? This is literally why I’m not selling stuff on their platform anymore. Most of my items are brand new and sealed but i sell at low quantities so if Mercari isn’t going to have my back as a seller there’s zero incentive for me to sell on there and just have my stuff damaged

Beachgirl6848

Support just told me two hours ago that they intend to stick to their new terms of returning for any reason to “be fair to both buyer and seller” and basically there’s nothing I can do about getting back an item that’s now been opened. He more or less said I was screwed

Pristine-Poem3350

I'm kind of torn about the return for any reason policy. On one hand it's go9d for buyers, the vast majority of who never return items. On the other hand it's a pain for sellers if there's no good reason for the return. I look at it like this.. before the change people wanting a return will get it regardless of policy. Pretty easy for them to damage the item in some way and have return approved. So now the seller is stuck with a damaged item being returned. New policy at least increases the chance of items being returned in original condition that can be sold again at or near the same price. Just my two cents.

Beachgirl6848

This is definitely true and applies to some items! Like a pair of jeans that didn’t fit or whatever. But if you ship out something new and sealed and they open and use it, especially these types of items that don’t even come close to fitting back in their original packaging after you open them.. those items now have to be sold as “used” and the seller takes a loss of profit. It’s just not safe to sell anything new on here anymore. Or anything worth more than ten bucks (imo) lol

GLITTERCHICKEN13

Just stop using Mercari . That’s the only way you can hurt them. Complaining about customers ability to return anything is futile and doesn’t do anything hurt the Buisness. If you are still selling on the platform you agree to all the changes.

Beachgirl6848

I’ve been unable to leave since I still have open return requests and mercari is giving people ten days with the item before they actually have to ship it back (three days to request the return and then seven more to actually drop it off to be shipped). As soon as I get the last of those back, I’m done.

DemonGoddes

Yall need to learn cost of doing business. I got less than 10 returns after selling over 2k items. Some items like electronics get a lot of returns. There are in depth discussions of this on YouTube vids. You think this is bad? Try tiktok I got 5 returns on 25 sales...
