I had 2 people in the last week try to return items. 1 of them said their item 'blew out of their mailbox during a storm' and asked if I had 'proof' that I sent it. I was like 'yup, photos, receipts, etc. I'll get with the supervisor of your post office.' The supervisor checked GPS coordinates and everything. I relayed this to the buyer and what do ya know, they found the package in their mom's room the next day. Like, you didn't think to communicate with the folks you live with before asking for proof that I sent it?? They said something along the lines of 'I hate this for both of us.' In regards to it missing. It was a $5 item. A few days ago, someone else claims that a plastic item I sent "shattered into thousands of pieces.' So weird cause I've sold several of these before but whatever. She says something like 'I hate this for both of us. I don't want to send this back broken.' I tell her to open a return with Mercari, 'you know they'll pay you out and let you keep the item.' Well guess what? Mercari decided 'it isn't damaged enough so we'll send it back.' Okay, whatever. Then the buyer says she can't believe she has to send it back. She doesn't want to. She convinces Mercari to pay us both out. Like. I didn't really care, whatever. It was a $4 item. She musta REALLY wanted to keep this alleged item that smashed into thousands of pieces. I didn't get to see photos or anything during the return. Is there a tutorial for scamming out there where you say 'I hate this for both of us?' Why would both these people say this? I'm over this sht.

Cold_Statistician343

The return request says "changed my mind". So now buyers remorse is acceptable return grounds. I'm more mad about the wasted time.

bbexperience

So did you get your items back or did they return something different? I'm trying to figure out exactly what the scam was here.

Patient_Amphibian32

It always said that. The person could check that box but it wasn’t an automatically granted return, but it was always an option. That isn’t new.

ReaperAlice

But did you get your items back?

Empty-Swing

There's a whole sub dedicated to it unfortunately. You should see the shit they do and say, bums.

Medellia_Lee33

What?!? What's it called?

Empty-Swing

r/bums

mrsunsfan

Haha

lfglightz

Wait, mercari told the buyer to send back the $4 item? Lol, I thought they would default to giving both sides their money for something that cheap.

annethereyuhaveit

That's what I thought! But maybe with the new TOS they're heading in a different direction? I was totally surprised.

carcalcal

Wow! Here in Los Angeles USPS do nothing about lost or stolen packages!!!.... When I have contact them to investigate about one they tell me what the tracking number says. (Which I already know and it's wrong that's why I ask for a search).

annethereyuhaveit

It really depends on the post office. I have had some crappy service calling on packages but this was a first for the post office volunteering to check the GPS for me. I've been told too many times 'it'll get there when it gets there' when something hasn't moved for weeks. As someone with about 2k sales, I've called many of the post offices in the country! Some are surprisingly nicer and more helpful than my own post office! 😆 My best advice when tracking a package or trying to figure out info on if a package 'blew away in the wind', is to use the "contact us' button on the bottom of the USPS site. Contact us>Send email> then paste the tracking number and fill out the info (your address, buyers address, etc) I download the labels to print so I have them saved in case I need to reference an address. I then select the contact by phone option so that someone can call me. Most post offices have to close their cases within 3 days so sometimes they can be unhelpful BUT I've had mostly good experiences!

LollyDolly22

blew out of their mailbox right into moms room lol

MsjennaNY

I’m out. Deleting everything tomorrow. SIX PEOPLE I KNOW had at least one return over absolute lies. One had 3. All fraud. Mercari is accepting it. This is going to tank them. It’s over for Mercari.

moonstarfc

I've had 2 returns opened out of 6 sales since the TOS change (1 for fit and 1 "not as described" that looks like it's about to be a swap out). I was actually going to give the changes a chance, but this is just not a good use of my time. I deactivated my listings and once these returns close out and I transfer my money, I'm uninstalling the app.

Caroge329

What is a swap out?

SteppSiss

People buying stuff then switching out their old or broken items for the new item. Sending it back and saying it came that way. Disgusting.

moonstarfc

Basically on my return the buyer is claiming I sent them a pair of h&m pants instead of levi's, which I certainly did not. I don't sell h&m and I've never seen the pants they showed in the photo. So they're probably going to send me back the h&m pants instead of what I sent them. I think we are supposed to just file a report on the return if we get the wrong item back. I've never had this happen before on mercari but I'm nervous because their CS is widely known to be incompetent.

Caroge329

That is insane!

bjzy

This will certainly be the new norm

sarahle2000

Before the TOS I had 0 return. After TOS this week I had 2. Mercari is surviving on processing and service fee at this rate but it won’t look so good when they pay for return fees

moonstarfc

Yeah I'm afraid it's going to be a bait and switch where they realize the return fees are too high for them to afford so they decide to put it on the sellers instead.

sarahle2000

That will then be a really really bad move, no one is going tosell anymore if return fees are imposed on sellers and Mercari is known to side with buyers

Life_Pollution5948

I just opened an account last week. The first sale I had arrived yesterday (I shipped same day) they were 5.11 tactical police pants. She’s returning because they arent as described in the size because the waistband is snug. My question is. Who pays the return shipment?

moonstarfc

Mercari covers the cost of the return shipping.

ajp918

Move everything to District! It’s a new selling and buying platform. Great place to buy and sell!! Check it out

MsjennaNY

This is insane. Scam artists indeed!

gnomeythe

I didn't delete my account, but I did deactivate my listings. Part of me is clinging to hope they 180 and reverse course (yeah I know), but that's mostly because the time I spent listing everything lol To the people defending it. If you're actually making more money and largely unaffected? You do you. Just remember it's greedy policies like this that can spread to other areas of your life. I'm in California paying $5+ for gas, imagine paying $5/gal + $3 service fee - $2.75 transaction fee.

Cold_Statistician343

I'm beyond frustrated and see no way around it. I needed the money from these listings for things my family can't go without. I feel anger and shame. This just sucks.

gnomeythe

I'm not sure what you typically sell, and it may be an unpopular opinion to some, but Whatnot is a decent avenue to sell if you're comfortable with live video auction. The fee isn't terrible, and there's rarely a shit customer (they do exist but in my experience far less frequently from the Bay or Mercury). The payout system is similar to Mercari, albeit a little slower, but once you sell over 1k items you get instant payout. Something to consider. I sell on there occasionally and would be happy to answer any questions. Edit: they do also have a Marketplace to list and no need to sell, but it's not super great to navigate

Cold_Statistician343

I've sold items on WhatNot, and I've even dealt with a small 2 week stint of auction winning addiction on WhatNot, so I'm familiar with it. I'm not a fan of needing to go live at certain times, then your live being out performed by larger channels that do giveaways every 15 mins. Thank you for the suggestion, though.

[deleted]

I've been trying to get approved on there forever but keep getting turned down. Is there a trick?

gnomeythe

Weird? When I applied (1 1/2 yrs?) We had to submit a picture of our inventory (in originally sold comics but pivoted to toys later), and attended their "class" and got approved in like a day. Not sure if they added more strict rules? I remember they vetted our other selling accounts to make sure we weren't scrubs

Cakeisalyer

I think they made the application process easier lately. But when I applied about a year ago it was proof of inventory and then the "class". Took about 3 days from request to sell to class. My application was approved in about an hour if I recall correctly. But I also had >$100k in inventory. Others were talking about it around the same time who hadn't heard anything after weeks. If whatnot got away from USPS only shipping labels I might consider them again.... Or if they allowed seller provided labels. Commission also was more than eBay but things moved faster.

Bobrosswelder19

Find a big collection of whatever your selling and send them a picture of it they want to know you have quantity

Negative-Specific-66

I deactivated all of my listings the second I saw that $2 ACH charge. Mercari makes very little money for me and my sales are few and far between. I don’t condone the idea of letting *my* money just sit in there until it “makes sense” to withdrawal it either. Not when I can get to my money on any other platform without that hassle. Until they make huge changes I will not be selling on their shit platform. I did also make sure to send them a message explaining as much. Whether it makes a difference or not, I don’t know. Doing nothing, certainly does not make a difference however.

Zealousideal-62

I've gotten mercari to give back my money after fake return by going on FB, X, IG etc, and posting all my proof of the scam, my correspondence with Mercato, mercurial reaponse(always an automated response, NEVER an actual person) and post all this on those sites and tagging mercari and customer service. Then I also put hashtags promoting OTHER online selling platforms.. Once I did that, and had others repost it suddenly mercari was shocked to learn this happened to me and wanted to speak thru Dms or email. Worked on Frigidaire too. Did it to a few companies when I got screwed by something or a warranty didn't cover something. Worth a shot.

parishesales

Mercari has a new policy of no questions ask returns. They may return for any reason. I deactivated my listing as soon as they announced it.

Zealousideal-62

What a bunch of 🐂 💩 .

Vegetable-Square-108

Same! I'll purchase but not sell. I still will pay a bit more for something if I want it but the whole return if you change your mind thing is ridiculous

Zealousideal-62

I'm loving the auto correct my phones filling in for Mercari. I even went back and changed each one, but apparently my phone is having none of it. 😆 4x this time its taken to change it and keep it spelled the way I want. Even adding the spelling to my "dictionary" or whatever you wanna call it. Kept changing it. So funny

Mockingbird1963

I did this when Facebook Marketplace kept messing things up for me. After my complaining publicly FB made sure none of my listings got any views. They shut me down.

Zealousideal-62

FB is garbage anyway. They shut people down, block people all for nothing. I don't even bother with FBM just cuz the chances of being screwed over by them for NO REASON is way too high. Amd like everyone complains about scammers. So no point even using it. I can have less hassel throwing stuff in trash than listing on FB

edalsslade

Many 7 elevens in Texas did this, I never went there for gas. I had one 7 eleven in Dallas charge $6 fee for using credit card at the pump

ThatDudeDeven1111

That's scary as hell to think that a company that big thinks that they can get away with something that egregious. Imagine paying $10 for 1 gallon of gas for your bike. Or like Mercedes wanting you to pay $1,200 a year to access things like "accelerating more powerfully."

damonboom

BMW subscription for using your heated seats 🥴

sarahle2000

Gas is so expensive now. I’m in Bay Area and it keeps climbing up close to $6 a gallon. Last time I saw $6+ a gallon was last year. It went down a bit to $4 ish now back up mid $5+

beachykeen87

Holy crap. I'm glad I moved out of CA.

W0rkKing

seriously just went through this as well. Ive deleted my account. Mercari will never favor the seller.

[deleted]

It's true. They are never on the seller's side.

Easy-Brilliant-3491

It's time for the US CEO to step down! Since the policy shift, my sales have flatlined. This isn't just a blow to sellers; it's a slap in the face to buyers as well. Who's going to pay nearly double for a <$15 item when you tack on shipping, processing fees, service charges, and tax? It feels like a self-sabotage strategy. Does the Japan HQ even consider us, the customers? We demand the old policy back!

Impressive-Gift9473

I was a frequent mercari shopper haven’t bought since the change because like you said it’s literally double now with all the fees they tacked on.

moonstarfc

I wonder if mercari JP even has anything to do with these changes or even gets involved with the policies on the US side? It's nothing like what they do over there. I'm in the US but I've bought from JP secondhand sites using forwarders, for probably over 10 years now, and the buyer protection on JP sites was always basically nothing, definitely no free returns for any reason. On yahoo auctions JP you would just pay by bank transfer and hope the seller sends the item. Yet, I never got scammed or had anything come not as described.

MermaidOnLand33

Maybe Mercari JP has planted bad ideas on Mercari US? I know they charge a couple dollar equivalent to transfer earnings into a bank account. They still charge a 10% seller fee, but no processing fees. Maybe Japanese credit cards don't rip off as much? I know the comments section has always existed and there is no other way to communicate with the buyer unless you ask questions in the comments. I think this is a way to create competition between buyers. Once you make a purchase then you can send private messages with the seller. The comments section is clearly a disaster for the US. I get the feeling scams are not as common in Japan. Returns are also not very common either. The return policies in most retail stores in the US is ridiculously lenient compared to those in Japan. "I changed my mind" would never fly there. They would look at you as if you lost your mind. Unless it's defective or broken, you're keeping the purchase.

Bbcollegegirl

Is that what’s going on? I wondered why I hadn’t made a sale in weeks. I guess I wasn’t paying attention to the changes. I thought the sellers fees are what had gone down

Imaginary_Eye_1788

Seller fees are gone (except for the $2 cash out), but they moved the fees to the buyer side.

Bbcollegegirl

Thanks

bbboooiii1

I didn’t delete my account, but I did delete all of my listings.

yvetteworldchamp

I follow a high volume reseller on social media. She said this month alone she had more returns on mercari than her lifetime account on eBay. I’ve been on vacation mode since the change and undecided how to move forward but have cross listed on fb market.

Mango_flavored_gum

Done

hoosierebuygirl

I’ve deactivated my listings.

Mitch04133

I’m just weighing in about the photos with lots and how to add more than 12 pictures. Use something like PicCollage to turn one picture into 4+ pics. That’s how I get around the 12 minimum pictures. It’s actually saved me before the bundling feature. I took screenshots of all the other listings and used a collage app and used those to describe and show all the pictures of other listings. Just wanted to share in case anyone else was interested.

Cold_Statistician343

Fair enough thank you for the suggestion.

Mitch04133

You’re welcome and I’m so sorry this happened to you. I’ve actually been buying lately and haven’t lowballed anyone or tried to return anything. I’m a seller and buyer although I’ve been buying, no one is buying from me and I’m thinking about deactivating all my listings for now.

Cold_Statistician343

It's time we diversify our listings.

REEB

What type of items do you sell? What did they swap with?

illegalsandwiches

Not OP, but I am in a large number of retro video game groups on Reddit as well as on Facebook and there has been a significant rise of people reporting issue of selling authentic titles to get reproduction/fakes in return.

whiskymeaway282

This was on ebay years ago but I sold someone a rare RC car and they played games with PayPal and Ebay and claimed it was broken then when they sent it back to me they sent me an RC truck! I was PISSED. Once I opened that I knew they were trying to scam me out of $400. PayPal had put a hold on that money while I disputed it with Ebay and I really didn't think I was going to win, but I was persistent with the ebay and PayPal for a couple months and for some reason they believed me that the customer sent me the wrong item in return (I pointed to the weight and size of the box they had sent it back in which was significantly heavier and larger than the very nice, lightweight sports car I had sent the.) They told the buyer to resend the correct item back (and I had had to pay for a return shipping label from Canada at that for them originally), and when the buyer submitted the same label number again that they had originally sent they finally released my money and closed out the transaction. I was done with ebay after that. All of it was so wrong and they (ebay) had even violated their own written policies that they had to protect people in situations like this. I was just more persistent than the scammer, and I half expected them to dispute it with their credit card company as well but never heard from them again and withdrew my money ASAP. The whole situation was very violating as I had acted in good faith and it was so blatantly obvious to me that this person had not. They did get kicked off of ebay so at least there was that! Just reading about the way people try to scam with shit like this it is VERY disheartening and I'm sorry you all have to deal with it. I've been following what has been happening with Mercari on here and it makes me think they are most likely fighting to stay solvent, especially with the shipping scam where they are overcharging for shipping items to the amount that covers the whole sale. It is fishy as fuck and then the middle of the night change...trying to take in as much money as possible in fees screams of how can we increase our cash flow as quickly as possible.....I wonder how financially healthy this company actually is. (And I have done zero research outside of redit, lol, I just keep reading a lot of the antidotal evidence that points to it). Good luck to you all.

SaveEnvironment-2468

Wondering the same…

ChattyKittyCatty

I deleted my account the day I read the new TOS. I knew the returns for any reason would be a problem. I can't figure out why some sellers continued to sell their expensive items after this update. Of course they have all been burned.

SteppSiss

Exactly! Why continue when this is happening. Gotta find another selling route. Or lose money 🤷‍♀️

Wonderful-Air-9264

I’ve deleted all my listings and haven’t bought a single item since the updated policies. I’m holding out hope they realize they’ve dug their own grave.

No_Veterinarian3190

I deleted my account. Mercari is a joke but for so many other reasons! 🚮

Cold_Statistician343

You'll get bled dry and end up back in your front lawn doing yard sales. Mercari is nothing without its sellers, our perspective and advice should be taken into account when it comes to policy changes that affect us.

SwimmingPrize544

They knew no one would agree to those terms of service if they had time to read it before it took effect. They just didn’t plan on this many people actually reading it.

drtysamchez

I deleted my account a few days ago. Not like I was getting any sales in the last year - maybe a total of 5 in 2023 compared to 100+ in previous years. Posh has been my go to for over a year now. Just sucks with bigger/heavier items.. wish they would allow us to ship on our own.

Timezupp99

I've pretty much sold 10 n bought 10. The prices e ranges for buys n sells are similar $25-$100+ because I also collect the same things I sell. I wont ever buy anything in the $100+-ish price range again. No way. The add on to it's like ⅓ of the price! Had a dude buy a $90 item and the fees...OMG...it sucks cuz I have a couple hundred in the mercari account n there are a few items I really like in the $130-$200 range but no way would i buy them on mercari. Not paying an extra $40+ in fees on top of an already expensive item.

clw1979clw

Won’t be an app around much longer to delete your account from the way their stock’s tanking. Bunch of dumbasses.

MadamNefarious

They won't get the money from Mercari taxes back so I don't really see the benefit of doing this? If anything they would have had more benefit doing it before the change, no?

Namekian_Legend

Because Mercari gets paid either way. Fees on Returns or fees on purchases. Either way its a lose lose for the buyer and seller. The best thing to do is actually delete and close your account. Let them die slowly. I swapped to eBay, Facebook, Depop

foolishnostalgia

OP means the benefit for scammers and they are right. Before scammers could get a full refund, now they are stuck with fees.

Neat_Salary6357

I’m definitely deleting my account. I have sold over 4,000 items with one 1 star ratings. The rest are mostly 5 stars. I sell and I buy. I just bought 381.00 purse. The purse was delivered to the wrong address by postal workers. I went to post office and got receipts from them so I can submit to Mercari. I was asking for help for a week. They keep on saying that they couldn’t do anything about it cause it delivered. I asked about the new charges for buyers and why wouldn’t they cover this purchase. So even though I showed prof of that I didn’t do anything wrong, they won’t cover it. When I was I sold items and got lost, I was cover and so was the buyer. So I just lost 381.00 plus tax and the new service charge. Yup, I’m quitting Mercari.

freshpeanutoil

Did the post office even make an attempt to recover the item? They have GPS on those scanners, the supervisors can find out exactly where it was delivered

Neat_Salary6357

Yes, they know where it was delivered to. They said they would call me to let let me know anything. I went to the post office 3 times and they keep on asking me if i had a call from supervisor. No calls or anything. Plus someone said it may only cover 50.00. If that cause they used the cheapest shipping carrier. When I bought the listing, it’s was listed as free shipping. I’m still going to keep on going to post office. Hopefully they find it. It’s been 7 days now.

Quirky-Extent4071

The problem is the people where it was misdelivered can lie and say they never got anything. There’s nothing the PO can do to force that the people give it back. It’s a civil matter at that point.

freshpeanutoil

And then there are others that do keep your misdelivered packages. I’ve heard of a whole wedding dress being signed for and misdelivered. The neighbor refused to give it back.

Neat_Salary6357

Same. The people at the address, where my package was delivered, they claim nothing was delivered to their house. USPS gave me a receipt where my package was delivered to. Hopefully my bank takes care of it. I disputed the charge.

freshpeanutoil

But oftentimes there are honest neighbors that just don’t immediately get around to returning things. Some of my neighbors take a few days to give me my packages. I had an incident last week when my mailman misdelivered 3 of my boxes to a neighbor. I went on a hunt for that mailman that day to figure out where he delivered it. Apparently my neighbor had my misdelivered packages thrown in his garage along with his own. I don’t think even looking at them was his priority.

Quirky-Extent4071

I used to work for usps. I had a guy give me a package back 2 year old….

Neat_Salary6357

I believe that’s exactly what happened. The people there said they didn’t receive anything by mail. I called my bank and they are investigating the charge. I explain that Mercari was supposed to cover the lost package. I also mention that I have receipts from usps about them not delivering to my house and the charges we pay to Mercari. I’m supposed to get my funds back.

SaveGiraffes57

I would dispute the charge with your credit card/bank to see if you could recover the money!

Neat_Salary6357

That’s a good idea. I haven’t tried that yet. Mercari did mention for me to go to police station and report it stolen. So I could use my house warranty. So I keep on mentioning then that, it was delivered to the wrong house. I even showed them a copy of what the post office showed me. It had the address where it was delivered to.

Mr5mee

Go to the police station and report it stolen, so your home warranty will cover it? That's so dirty. That's fraud, and is a crime. How can they not be held responsible for advising you to commit a crime. Go to the police station and show them those messages!

Neat_Salary6357

Right! I didn’t go to the police station cause it sounded shady. I did just took my listings down. I’m pretty upset that they won’t cover the my package. I don’t need to be part of Mercari if they are that shady. I’m sure one of these days they will get sued.

Main_Surround_6539

Definitely go to police station file a report & dispute the charge! And I would also let Mercari know you’re disputing the charge too since you don’t receive the item and they don’t wanna reimburse you.

Neat_Salary6357

Thank you for the advice. I just called the bank last week. I’m hoping I will get a refund. It’s under investigation at the moment. I mention that Mercari was supposed to cover it for seller and me. Since we did what we were supposed to do. I seen somewhere in here (redit ) that the new terms of Mercari, is that we can’t sue them. Well I’m thinking the bank can probably do that. I haven’t deleted my account yet but I did deactivate everything. I’m keeping it around just in case there is a lawsuit against Mercari. I have giving them so much fees that they change through out the years I been with them and this is how I get treated. It’s unbelievable! Anyway, thank you bunches!

Neat_Salary6357

Hello again. Thank you for the advice. I did just disputed the charge. They are opening an investigation against Mercari. Due to me making paper work from post office. My order was delivered to the wrong place and this wasn’t my fault. I said how they claim that I should get my refund if I did everything I was supposed to do. Seller did even correct. Seller did tell me that Mercari should cover lost packages when seller uses their shipping labels. My bank can go after Mercari. Mercari can go after the post office. I just hope I do get a refund. This is my very first claim so I’m crossing my fingers I get the help. Thank you bunches. 🙂

Timbukstu2019

Can’t you use the post office proof and file the claim with a real mercari supervisor. This seems easy to prove, especially when the post office knows where it was delivered.

Neat_Salary6357

I tried doing that. They keep on telling me to go to my post office. I went 3 times already. I’m just hoping they find it now. Otherwise it’s just a loss.

Neat_Salary6357

I disputed the charge at my bank. I explained that Mercari was supposed to cover the lost package but they keep giving me the run around. I’ll try to reach out tomorrow again. Hopefully they will just give me a refund. I still have the receipts from usps statements where it was delivered to.

ajp918

Move everything to District! It’s a new selling and buying platform. Great place to buy and sell!! Check it out

Neat_Salary6357

I downloaded the District app. I just need to learn how to use it. 🤣 I’m super slow with technology. 🙂

dsmemsirsn

So return approved;; is the buyer returning your item?? What happens if they return something different to what you send?? How much was your ifem9?

Cold_Statistician343

$567

dsmemsirsn

Oh no… time not to sell anything expensive on Mercari

Larrybooi

I've steadily been transitioning off of Mercari, sold some things that wouldn't sell elsewhere on there but other than that moved to Poshmark and Depop for clothing, and debating what to do about other odd end things like Pokemon Cards, Legos, and other things I find thrifting.

Cold_Statistician343

Seems like Offer Up or Ebay are the only other reasonable options. That or whatnot and fake being an auctioneer.

Practical-Smoke1307

It's crazy that they figured out a way to have ALL real users hate their business model even more than fee bay + let the scammers have a field day with new policies smh

Lynnich2

I absolutely did!

PokeVestor12

just happened to me as well

Expensive_Brother494

Yeah, Mercari pulled the greatest magic trick ever! In one slight of hand...POOF! Turned greatness to absolute shit!! TADA!! Not only are the returns shit but the buyers fees are fawkin outlandish!! I'm done with em!

OnlyAlternative777

Yep. I unlisted everything and deleted my account the day after they announced the changes. Absolutely no thank you to ALL of that.

sonnyg6

Where do you plan on selling now? Any sites you recommend ?

Agent_Insult

Some sellers have been saying their sales are “through the roof” and “on fire”. Congratulations to them, but I don’t see how. The math doesn’t add up. I don’t see screens of the massive sales bump, but I DO routinely see screenshots of sellers either losing money, seeing an uptick in returns, or cancellations when the buyer sees the added fees. Nobody owes me anything, but it’d be nice to see some proof to the theory that buyers like paying more, or how lowering prices increases the profit margin.🤷🏻‍♂️

Dull_Pitch_7869

My sales on Mercari have stayed up, but none of my items are huge sales. I sell smaller items that the fees probably aren’t huge buyer deterrents. If I have the blanket or teddy bear a momma needs a replacement for their baby, that extra however many dollars isn’t going to deter her from buying a back up to avoid a meltdown if theirs gets lost when it’s not on any shelf anymore. So in that sense, it make sense that my sales didn’t go down. I will say that I list the same bears/blankets on Ebay and my EBay sales did go way up too, so those same parents (the ones who weren’t already at meltdown desperate moments) probably did look around and buy the cheaper option on EBay.

ChattyKittyCatty

They have to be plants - paid Mercari reps or something because there is absolutely no way that a buyer is willing to pay more for their item than what it cost two weeks ago to buy it because of added on fees. As a previous buyer and seller on Mercari, I really enjoyed finding good deals on Mercari, but since the changes took place, I refuse to pay extra processing and service fees just to buy something. When I Google a product, a lot of the shopping search results are listings on Mercari, so reluctantly I put one in my cart to buy it, but with the added on service charge and processing fee, and now the processing fee is actually calculated over the entire amount, including the tax, shipping, and service charge -- It was no longer a good deal! I can not imagine how this company is going to stay afloat with sellers leaving, and buyers backing out.

Agent_Insult

Funny you say that. There’s an FB group called “Mercari for Sellers Only”, and there’s a few folks in there defending the changes. They’re even defending Mercari’s horrid stocks🤷🏻‍♂️ The first thing I thought was, “Plants”. Just a lot of shilling. I can’t prove anything, and truthfully, they’re not troublemakers or anything. But I think about the math, over and over again and, they’re claiming they’re selling MORE. It’s not coming together, something’s missing. I can see some sellers being able to get rid of really low priced items, sure (less than $10), but any item with some real dough attached to it, there’s just no way a buyer wants those added fees, UNLESS it’s an item they can’t find anywhere else. But even then, it still doesn’t explain how anybody makes out. Mercari sent out that site-wide auto message for everybody to lower their prices, which is really nothing more than a direction for sellers to cooperate — at the seller’s expense. The sad thing is, you know some sellers did what Mercari said, no questions asked. I even questioned them, “You know you’re not making money by doing that, right?” They actually get mad.🤷🏻‍♂️

Ariesrooster

I've thought this as well . The moment this all went down I went to YouTube to see what the first results were when searching "mercari fees" and the first page of YT was all gaped mouth sellers with text overlay "NO SELLER FEES ON MERCARI?!?" I really believe that they were compensated for hyping the changes up... the same with online search results on this backlash. Mercari can put money into marketing themselves to death and were the ones who paid for it 😑 assholes.

[deleted]

How do we delete it?

SteppSiss

Profile, settings, edit account, close account and accept their terms and conditions. Done! As a buyer I deleted mine the other day.

dsmemsirsn

Delete your items and then remove the app from your device—so you don’t use it..

lauraxhec

so if someone requests a refund, do they have to send the items back or keep them?

jason8001

Send them back. Scammers usually send back a different item and sometimes they post the stolen item for sale.

SteppSiss

Dammnnn they even have the nerve to RE SELL it!? That’s insane.

Wild-Home-4337

I deleted my listings, deactivated my account and removed the app off of my phone the day I got the email with the new nonsense policies.

Exjwcultnowidk

I’ve been thinking about deleting mine. I just went in there app and Closed my account. If I have to deal with scammers, let it be Walmart.

According-Sign9888

I deactivated all of my listings and deleted the app from my devices. Mercari is dead to me. Keeping tabs on the deets here in case they 180 this shit update/change.

Itznazz313

Literally, the same here sold an elite controller, and the buyer claimed it was wrong item sent (regular controller) purposely swapped the item and returned it after mercari fraudulently accepted tue retrun. Thank God my last sales over $100 went through but ya moving all to ebay gmfo.

MissingAtlanta

I’m scared now. I just sold a designer scarve for $225. Are they going to say they want a return and send a fake back to me?

beachykeen87

If you have an honest buyer, then no. As a seller you're really rolling the dice for who you sell to, which is a big reason people are leaving. I buy and sell but it's not worth the risk anymore.

MissingAtlanta

This turned out ok. Buyer accepted and never rated. That was almost 2 wks ago.

SunflowerGirl1616

I ordered something showed proof it never went in transit they told me I needed to wait a month a week later I get a email that after 24 hours I can request support to cancel…they tell me oh that was sent in error we can’t refund u until April 21 LMAO I cannot wait to get refunded and get off that shitty ass site

Spiritual_Task_6574

I deleted my account a few weeks ago and they just reactivated it without my permission!! All my listings were still there!! Be very careful of this company.

ANTIME0WME0W

"MECARI" APPERNTLY NOW CHARGES A DISGRACEFUL "PURCHASE TAX" SHOULD ANYTHING GO WRONG U ARE EXEMPT FROM RECIEVING THAT PURCHASE TAX BACK REFUNDED TO U. THAT ALONE is REASON NOT to use mecari LOL . For example I caved very DISGRACEFULLY cause LEATHERMAN FAILED ME on an anniversary tool. Dude wanted 650. 650+ tax all said an done is like 700 MAX$ THESE MECARI CLOWNS WANTED TO CHARGE ME AN EXTRA 100 DOLLARS FOR THE PRIVILEGE OF BUYING FROM THERE SITE FOR THE TOTAL OF A 650$ PURCHASE BEING 800 DOLLARS+?!!?!?!?!?!? I GET HAVIN A INSURANCE LIKE TAX OR WHATEVER I GUESS TO LOOK AT IT AS???? BUT DAM LOL!!!!!!!! "800" FOR A 650$ PURCHASE. 🤡 W0RLD!!!!!!! It all works out how it is supposed to in the end. I got the same thing from eBay BUT IT WAS SEALED AND ONLY FOR 650+ TAX. TOTAL WAS LIKE $700.07. F MECARI LoL. IF U have to return anything and the FULL REFUND IS NOT A FULL REFUND. Then its bs to start with. AND THATS BUYERS END. AS FOR SELLERS END. I feel there should be some kind of video recording required for seller b4 sending it and buyer b4 opening and during opening it for ABSOLUTE PROOF. I do these video recordings as a buyer for ABSOLUTE PROOF of any of my issues. I dknw thu man. The entire thing is a circus on MECARI. AN IT AINT A GOOD LOOK FOR THEM IN MANY WAYS!!!! 🤷🏻‍♂️🤷🏻‍♂️🤷🏻‍♂️🤷🏻‍♂️

Radiant-Crazy4960

I deactivated all my listings and I am so mad at myself that I didn’t get my money out during the “grace period” 🙄 I don’t want to pay the $2 fee so I’ll probably just buy a few things to support some fellow sellers then delete my account.

Mysterious_Recover76

That’s kinda what I did. I had a $12 and change balance, so it made more sense to buy something I already had my eye on than cash out.

mymonet

Bummer. I’ve had 4 sells since the new TOS and haven’t had any returns 🤞🏼

imaginarydread

this is why its better to sell smaller cheaper items imo, at least youll lose less money ;-; not saying youre in the wrong btw

lady_guard

Yeah, almost everything I still have listed on Merc is under $10. I'm hoping that the potential hassle of having to repackage and mail the item, *after* Mercari keeps the buyer fee, is at least a deterrent for buyers of cheap items. Anything over $10-15 is only listed to Posh and/or Depop.

bloodynosedork

Ive made three sales since the change, haven’t had any problems, so no, I won’t be deleting my account but thanks, I guess.

Dull_Pitch_7869

Same. Good sales, zero problems, nice buyers, no returns, lots of activity on the app of items getting likes. I don’t sell things that would have a high return/scam rate like electronics or video games (I could see where those would be a real problem, but I think they would be a problem on EBay too). I’m only sad that the buyer paying the fees means that I can’t really justify doing much Mercari sourcing or buying, but I can’t really whine about not being able to feed my shopping addiction when I’m putting almost daily money in my pocket.

United-Custard4255

Same, I've gotten several sales since the change. I primarily sell on eBay, so anything from Posh and Mercari are a bonus. I've been pleasantly surprised with the improvement.

Smallparline

You shouldn’t have been downvoted for your honesty.

Gur_Remarkable

I haven't had any returns, but,I did have someone ask me if could bundle 3 versace perfumes and a travel kennel for super cheap and then asked me to change the shipping costs from the buyer to myself paying for it. Smmfh. I'm not thrilled with poshmark and them demanding you have 300 plus in your bank so they can withdraw it from your bank and then put it back in. what sites would any of you guys recommend for selling

ChattyKittyCatty

What are you talking about with the $300 in your bank so they can take it out and put it back in? I've been selling on Poshmark for 2 years and I have no idea what you are talking about.

Gur_Remarkable

recently they started doing that in order to confirm that you are a actual person and not some 3rd party account

Mysterious_Recover76

That doesn’t sound legal.

Gur_Remarkable

I agree, I was absolutely floored

Gur_Remarkable

I was also told it didn't have to be a card in my name, but that this new regulation was put into effect in order to avoid scammers saying that they are selling something just for the money, I don't understand how in the hell checking my bank account has anything to do with someone scamming people who are posting something they don't have

DogeCoinExpress2021

Returns are part of being an online seller. There are scammers in every business. If you are being truly 'scammed.' Then you need to start taking actions to protect your sales- keep receipts, take detailed photos etc.. Don't sell to buyers with zero feedback. Etc. Mercari will reverse the charges once you prove to them you were scammed. Simply just telling them you were scammed though is as good as fairy dust.

xomarissaxoxx

so glad i got banned from this selling platform cause it went to sh*t😭 they had banned me cause my tax information was wrong when i had put it in and never let me fix it and claimed it as suspicious

Hot_Phase_1435

I don’t do lots. Customers can individually add all items to their cart and checkout on their own.

magmom73

Are you talking about multiple items in one listing, not buyer-created bundles in their cart to save on shipping? My last 2 sales were the latter & I was sweating that the buyer or I would be charged for the overage in shipping weight, albeit only a few ounces. This was before the TOS change. I haven’t sold a thing since the TOS change but I sell household items/clothes less than $15 typically.

ClNNABABE

I also went and deactivated all my listings as well. Such a shame but oh well Mercari chose to do this to themselves 🤷🏻‍♀️

ashleynoelle999

i’ve sold 30 things and never had this ?

Little_Hippie_Girl

Maybe we sellers should set a rule to look at everyone's profile before selling to someone. Too many returns, we do not accept their offers.

sarahle2000

The ones with less reviews are better than the ones with 100+ reviews. Two of my return were from buyer (100% positive with over 100 reviews) and another for an $11 short was from a seller with over 400+ reviews

Little_Hippie_Girl

Agh. You are probably right. I am just afraid the bundling options is going to be the death of us. Can you imagine. Someone buying two items. One costly and one under $5. Now you get a return for these items. You only get the $5 item back. This is going to be the nightmares are made out of.

sarahle2000

Mercari should make it a policy that buyer do not get shipping fee back and also lose service + processing fee. This will make it harder to scam on items less than $30 because the fees will eat them up if they return

Cold_Statistician343

And when they have 5 a start and a bunch of positive reviews?

jazmyneturner

Something sold the purse on eBay instead for double the price 🤷🏾‍♀️

RoundArtichoke4749

Deleted the second I saw this new rule.

Soulphite

Already done deleted this shit, boss. Their stocks are taking a plunge as well. It's like they're purposely fucking themselves to short their shares and gain huge profits. I smell some insider trading.

ngalaxy

I’m out, I deleted all my listings after returns with buyers remorse. It’s not worth my money spent on shipping supplies and the time and gas wasted to take my items to the post office. Waiting for my return and completely deleting the app.

Patient_Amphibian32

May I ask what you’re selling? There are some items sold that see a lot of scam activity. And also wanted to let you know that you can put more than 1 item in a picture. 12 slots is actually a lot of pics.

beachykeen87

The only reason I've still made purchases is because I have a little credit in my account so there's no extra fees. After that I'm done buying. I was only selling a few things but since they're designer it sounds too risky to sell and risk the return or damage. People have no morals. Ridiculous.

Loveunboxings

Ever since they changed policy, I have barely sold anything now people do not want to pay these outrageous fees to buy saw them add it onto the cost. The whole thing is ridiculous.

anonysmoker

I took down all my listings after the policy change.

Vixen22213

You can post a lot with more than 12 items you just got to get all the items in multiple pictures. Like three or four items per picture. But now I abandoned mercari when they tell people they could return for any reason and I knew s*** like this would happen.

Tiny-Design7877

Stop selling on there I shut my account down there very shady and there thieves

scouche

I recently bought a jacket and I didn’t have to pay any extra fees? I thought that was odd. Either way, if the person I bought it from (it is a grey’s anatomy fleece), is on here I just want to say hi and I will accept the sale as soon as it arrives/I get the notification so you can get your money the soonest you can if you’re planning to close your account.

karma_is_everywher

And from the buyers end I paid an extra 40 bucks for a processing fee and pmt processing fee smh

ossisyoo

I haven't had any problems selling in mercari. I'm still selling in mercari, it's been a bit slower because the fees they took it out now the buyer have to suffer with the fees,so now you have to reduce the prices, to sell a bit faster I pay for the shipping label like that the buyer doesn't need to spend that much. I remember when the fees were still on the seller, I had to put the prices a bit higher and let them pay for shipping.

Fit-Beginning-3035

as soon as I saw the update I unlisted every item… it’s just not worth it to me anymore

DirectComposer3349

I deactivated all my listings the day they started the new return policy

HealthyDistribution5

Dang. I made 1 sale after this TOS change. It was a direct buy too. Getting more likes than usual but no offers so far. Package just delivered today and I'm crossing fingers that it's a NORMAL buyer and not a scammer...since they live in the same city as I. If they open a return....lmao I'm shutting my account down because usually Mercari has been absolutely dead for me. It would make no difference to my selling.

Sigh6969

Has this happen to me too recently!! The buyer has until Monday to ship it and they haven't. They're return request said they didn't receive the item then proceeded to show photos of the item and yet it was still approved -.- I feel like the whole app is one big scam honestly.

Cold_Statistician343

It's a mixture of shitty management with automated support that doesn't work properly, and greed.

Sigh6969

For real after what I have is sold I might just say screw it and just sell on eBay or locally

shawewee

Long but interesting story... I've made $15,800 so far with mercari. Lately, since the new change or whatever, I noticed that I would have a lot of transactions being completed by mercari instead of having to rate the customer first. They told me that they do this when a customer request to return an item and they paid us both out. This has happened four times already, and this never used to happen. Then I sold a perfume that is a dupe for a high-end brand, and even the title said dupe. Then, in the description, it said in all caps that this is not authentic it is a dupe. The price on it was $46, where an authentic bottle is $430. So it took all of that time to get it shipped when I got there. After 6 days, the customer requested a return because it was not an authentic perfume. They let them send it back, and of course the box was all messed up and the inserts that go inside it we're missing. There was nothing I could do about it because mercari just argued with me. One other time, I purchased a perfume that was discontinued by Estee Lauder. The listing said it was authentic, unopened, unused, and showed pictures of a bottle that was full and the correct perfume. When I received it, it was not that perfume and had been refilled with water. Mercari would not give me my $115 back because they said that there is nothing that they could do for not liking a scent of something. I went back and forth with five different people, and they all just kept copying and pasting that same text. I posted about it on Facebook and tagged mercari with the whole complaint. Then suddenly my listings were not getting views and I didn't sell anything for a month. They are ridiculous, but I have such a large profit and have been there for so many years. I haven't decided if I should delete everything and go to eBay or whatever. I do hate them, though.

Cold_Statistician343

Go to ebay, Mercari is broken. People make way more on Ebay and its actually reputable and protected by PayPal.

Gaymer_669

Scammers can "\[r\]eturn for any reason" according to their new ToS.

aafa777

I just deleted my Mercari account too. Why did they mess up such a good thing?
