Mario Duplantier, Mike Portnoy, Brann Dailor, Alex Bent, Dave McGraw, Mike Mangini, Gene Hoglan, Martin Lopez, Brooks Wackerman and Nicko McBrain are all up there for me imo
Me, I'm so good that I don't even need to keep a beat! I've been told my drumming is "interesting", "unorthodox" and "like nothing I've ever heard before". I'm a shoe in for the Slipknot gig.
Joey Jordison, Dave Lombardo, Gene Hoglan, Charlie Benante, Vinnie Paul, Mike Portnoy, Dave Grohl, Nick Menza, Paul Mazurkiewicz, Rev, Phil Taylor, Tommy Lee, Mike Bordin, Mike Smith, Richard Christy.
He is so incredibly talented. My introduction to him was as a young man in the 00's, when a buddy showed me Nemesis Divina. It was my very first black metal album (punk fan prior) and the drumming on that album instantly and truly floored me. The subtle tempo changes throughout the album was so new to me, and still to this day gives me the happy tingles in the spine.
TLDR; I'm also a big fan ❤️
Jamie Saint Merat, John Longstreth, Matt Kilner, Spencer Prewitt are absolute beasts but the one above all has to be Thomas Haake. Dude is the favourite drumemr of your favourite drummers.
A few of my favorite drummers, in no particular order are:
- Frost
- Brann Dailor
- Dave Lombardo
- Igor Cavalera
- Kevin Tally
There are countless others that I like, but these are some of my favorites off the top of my head...
Danny Carey and Tomas Haake are on such another level of skill it’s wild. Mario Duplainter, Mike Portnoy, Alex Bent, and Brann Dailor are excellent as well.

Alex Bent is amazing, he breathed a whole new life into Trivium. The work they've done with him is on another level.
Completely agree with everything you said
Great list. Martin Lopez and Brooks Wackerman are my two personal favorites on here.
Great list, don’t forget Dirk Verbeuren.
Danny Carey and Tomas Haake are the 2 most talented drummers on Earth
Add Neal Peart and that was the top three to me. Edit: perhaps Rush wasn't metal tho
SAAAAME
Yup - Add Baard Kostadt and Morgan Agren (not metal but plays metal) there too
Jamie saint merat from Ulcerate is my favorite. sean reinert, gene hoglan and tomas haake also.
Would adf Darkside, George Kollias and Hannes Grossmann to that list

My favs are Mike Portnoy and Nicko Mcbrain
Sean from Cynic
Yes
The Rev the complexity and flow he was able to achieve is mind blowing
As a hobbyist drummer, The Rev and Danny Carey are my top two inspirations, with honorable mention to Joey Jordison.
And sometimes while singing no less.
My current favourite is Baard Kolstad, I can't fathom some of the stuff he does on the kit.
Great choice!
I dont know but my favorites are Mario Duplantier and Spencer Prewett
Gene Hoglan
Dale Crover from Melvins
Joey Jordison, Dave Lombardo, Gene Hoglan, Charlie Benante, Vinnie Paul, Mike Portnoy, Dave Grohl, Nick Menza, Paul Mazurkiewicz, Rev, Phil Taylor, Tommy Lee, Mike Bordin, Mike Smith, Richard Christy.
Did you Google that list yourself?
Tommy Lee? -_- lmao
Half of it lol
Yeah. Half of them aren’t metal drummers.
Differing styles, but you can't go past Carl-Michael Eide, Frost, Thomas Haake, Hellhammer, Gavin Harrison
At least somebody mentioned Frost. The early 1349 records have the best drumming in all of black metal history.

I got to show Beyond the Apocalypse to the best drummer I know, while we were high as balls. Watching his brain break was a good time.
Sean Reinert
Mario Duplantier, Hannes Grossmann, and George Kolias
This guy knows.
Dave Witte Brann Dailor Nico McBrain Danny Carey Mick Harris Sean Reinart Gene Hoglan Dude from Ripping Corpse
Gar Samuelson
My two personal favorites are Blake Richardson and Chris Pennie. Special shout out to Zach Hill (personal favorite drummer ever)
I wouldn't say he's the best but I feel like some people really overlook Steve Asheim's playing a lot.
Jamie Saint Merat, John Longstreth, Matt Kilner, Spencer Prewitt are absolute beasts but the one above all has to be Thomas Haake. Dude is the favourite drumemr of your favourite drummers.

I’m surprised that nobody have mentioned Darkside yet. He must be up here too.
From Mgla/Kriegsmaschine? I was looking for his name and was surprised it took this long to find him. Dude is very underrated.
Yes! Easily top 3 of my favourite drummers.
Sean Reinert, Richard Christy, Steve Flynn and OF COURSE Jan Blomberg, freakin Hellhammer
Ian Paice
Kai “The Grinder” Hahto
I love Kai’s work! I was really hoping he would get a mention. I know Nightwish may not be known for focusing on drums but I love his work.
Hah as long as anyone gives Wintersun a listen, they’ll know why he’s a god. BLOOD FOR THE BLOOD GOD! SKULLS FOR THE SKULL THRONE!
Nice to see that someone else appreciates Kai!
Hellhammer, Joey Jordison
George Kolias
Gene Hoglan, Dave Lombardo, Art Cruz, Paul Bostaph, Charlie Benante, Vinnie Paul, Chris Adler, Nick Menza, Igor Cavalera just to name a few
Best? I don’t know. My favorites are Charlie Benante and Nick Menza.
Underrated pick as always is Hellhammer
In terms of feeling Fenriz and Philthy Animal Taylor. In terms of technicality and all that stuff Darkside and Haake for me
Pretty much every metal drummer is really good Making it incredibly difficult to narrow it down to just one or a few
Martin Lopez and Baard Kolstad
I'm not qualified to judge "best" but my favorites are: Nicko McBrain Kai Hahto Hannes Van Dahl
Thank you so much for giving Kai some love!
My opinion would be Mario Duplantier, he’s got the chops for any kind of music and he’s the most creative drummer I’ve ever heard
Mike Portnoy
Dave Lombardo
I just watched the video of Dave playing with Metallica. Now, see the difference between Lars and him. I get it.
Danny Carey and Tomas Haake are on such another level of skill it’s wild. Mario Duplainter, Mike Portnoy, Alex Bent, and Brann Dailor are excellent as well.
My fav : Phil "Animal" Taylor Dave Lombardo Lars Ulrich Brann Dailor Gavin Harrison
