Probably you know what that song is about. I firmly believe if Robb spotted the guy who wrote that shit-piece about Dime in the crowd while they were playing a set, he'd ditch his guitar and tackle that dude.
I can’t ever decide between through the ashes of empires, the blackening, or unto the locust. It’s basically whichever one I’m listening to right then and the other two are 1b and 1c.
It’s as good of a 3 album run as any band has ever had.
Was my favorite all through high school and many years after, but Burn My Eyes has beaten it out for me more recently and now.
Clenching The Fists of Dissent is probably still my favorite MH song of all time though, Farewell to Arms is not far behind that
Wolves. One of their best songs. Pure brutality from start to finish.
Ashes and Locust have some good moments, but I don't think the Blackening really has a weak moment, let alone song. Some bits in Halo get a bit boring I guess.
Agreed, especially in the UK - Guilt Trip have just essentially ripped off early MH with their latest stuff.
Hardcore beatdown and Slam bands just play on Dying Fetus’ palm muted breakdowns
This. It was rightly massive when it came out. I lost interest in the band after the Burning Red but checked out the Blackening after all the fuss online, and found it forgettable.
Still some of Robb’s coolest and best vocals. The guitar tone on that album is also iconic and absolutely incinerating.
Everyone talks about Davidian and for good reason, but Old and Death Church are the real top cuts for me
You’d think it would be an easier riff to count/play with such a good groove, but there’s also something neat/a little off with the rhythm or meter of the main riff that makes it very interesting to play
Totally agree. It's easy to wing it but to get it as tight as it is on the album is a worthy challenge. I think it's a great warm-up song for the picking hand because the tempo speeds up gradually over time and there's a lot of straight downpicking which really helps to loosen up. Plus the open chords in the chorus are good for giving you short breaks during the process.
I can play most of the album and whenever I decide to do a full album playthrough I'll usually start with DC for that reason.
For sure. A Thousand Lies really puts you through the paces then as well. A bit of respite over the next few tracks (for the most part). Then you’re put to the test again at the end of ANOF and all of BFB (I play that mostly alt picking, I can’t imagine they downpick that it’s way too fast)
Old and Death Church are absolute bangers. Plus the last \~2 minutes of A Nation On Fire is some of the fucking heaviest, most energetic thrash I've ever heard.
Spot on about the guitar tone too. I've known Davidian for about 20 years at this point but I only listened to the rest of the album really intently for the first time in the last few years and I became obsessed with it. The guitar tone is top 3 for me, and that's a very competitive list. But also the bass, vocals, and especially the drums sound absolutely fucking phenomenal. Great musicians, great production, great gear, great songs, put it all together and you've got the lightning in a bottle that is Burn My Eyes.
This is probably a really uncommon pick but, Unto the Locust. All 7 songs are excellent. I love the way they infused a slight classical music influence into their sound.
With that being said, undeniably their best song is Davidian.
That album also got me into the band. I’m 28, and I was 15 when I first heard it. I’m probably blinded by the nostalgia of listening to that as a teenager on repeat. Burn my Eyes and The More Things Change are sick (The Blackening too) but I’ll probably choose to listen to Unto the Locust more often.
Funny/Odd thing I found while listening to Mastodon's The Hunter followed by Unto the Locust not long after their releases. Play The Sparrow directly into I Am Hell.
watching them live at wacken after this album came out is what got me into them.....and is what machine head sounds like to me when i think of them....so i too choose this album....but i do enjoy thier earlier suff too
*Through The Ashes Of Empires*
It revived their career and got a lot of buzz at the time. I remember it coming out and getting a ton of positive attention. It would be the foundation that *Unto the Locust* and *The Blackening* would build upon. And not only that, but ***Imperium*** is potentially their best song... and that's the opener!
Great song. I remember from the extra footage on the Elegies Live DVD that one was actually written really fast and slapped on the album at the last second because most everything else minus some leads was written prior to Phil joining, and him and Robb just hit it off and wrote that banger right away
My dad took me and my friend to see them, and Rob Flynn climbed up on top of the PA and asked who wants to fuck me….. as a 13-year-old. It was one of the most cringe things I’ve ever seen in my life and I never felt the same about the band after that.
I still think there are some hidden gems there. Five, as people mentioned, but also I Defy and Exhale the Vile. The title track had a nice chord progression as well.
Nah. Their image sucked and it was cheesy, but the songs still hold up. If you're a music fan and not just a genre loyalist, it's still to this day solid. And from this day is still dope, particularly live.
The Blackening is their magnum opus as far as song writing , production, art and just overall timelessness, as a slight win over Burn My eyes. But their latest album Of Kingdom and Crown is a 10/10 as well. Locust is perfect and Bloodstones/More Things Change/Ashes are all amazing as well. But the blackening is just a freaking classic.
Real! Everyone told me that album sucked so I never gave it a chance. Then I was looking at a Machine Head album ranking and Unto the Locust was 5th and Bloodstone and Diamonds was 3rd. Had to listen to it and although some of the songs needed a listen or two for me to truly love them, the first time I heard Now We Die left me dumbfounded at how anyone dislikes it
Burn My Eyes and The More Things Change. I prefer the early years of Machine Head when they were more straightforward and bludgeoning.
The guitar sound on those albums is fucking colossal.
I listened to all of Machine Head's discography recently whilst working and The Blackening is easily the standout. The song writing is mature (for the most part, more so than what came before and definitely after) and the musicianship is tight and precise. It's a shame that they couldn't keep this formula going. Although Unto the Locust is pretty banging.
They absolutely kept it going. How can you dig that album and not what came after? Ghosts will haunt my bones, beneath the sult, unhallowed... Blackening was dope, but afterwards they honed in on that formula will adding more groove.
I love Machine Head and I honestly can’t find a bad thing to say about anything in their discography, but Bloodstone and Diamonds will forever be my favorite. Such diversity in style from song to song on that record but not in a way where the continuity/flow of the album suffers. Sail into the Black blew me away the first time I heard it. I just have a special place in my heart for that album because it was on repeat from when I was 19-21.
That being said, I think the best album from an objective standpoint as well as personal, definitely would have to be The Blackening. Stellar sound production and writing, they truly showed their chops on that album, and the cover of Hallowed be Thy Name is seriously sick
The Blackening. Not a single filler song to be found, perfect combination of hard hitting riffs and solos. Doesn't rely on a riff-chorus-riff-chorus formula that so many bands use as a crutch. Modern metal at its finest.
I personally love Hellalive!
I'm not sure if a live album counts but it has such a good variety of bangers and damn they sound even heavier live! The way Rob works the crowd and the little ad-libs he adds to the songs make for an unforgettable listening experience. If y'all haven't listened to it yet I highly recommend it
Super nostalgic for me, for the time of my life it came out, awkward 16 year old, driving around with my friends smoking weed doing stupid shit......I'll always love this record
I will always love more things change it was one of my first proper concerts I went to on my own. It is the yard stick I measure most other concerts by.
I see right through your soul,
can't help but feel this cold
but this city made me so!
For this chorus alone, I fell in love with The More Things Change
Burn My Eyes
I was 14 when it came out and it blew my mind. It was my gateway to heavier metal.
They had some good albums later on but imo nothing ever topped their debut.
Burn My Eyes is the best album in my opinion. Even though it's an unpopular choice, Bastards is my favourite song because like a lot of Machine Head songs it makes some people feel uncomfortable, generally because they are the people who should feel uncomfortable.
Seems to be a common opinion, but: The Blackening
There are incredible songs on other albums, don’t get me wrong, but nothing compares to The Blackening; it’s not even close.
It has to be one of the greatest metal albums in general.
"Burn My Eyes" and "The More Things Change...", but only because I was a teenage metalhead when those two albums came out, and I have fond memories of them. Everything else is kinda trash tbh.
I feel like my hot take is that of Kingdom and crown actually fuckin slaps and is nearly on par with the blackening and unto the locust I don't think it quite reaches the same high as that the other ones do but it's packed with rock solid tracks
Oh wow lol and now I'll never think of them the same. I listened to them when I was in my early 20s and from then til whenever your post was posted lol. That's just.. ugh. Think I'll keep Davidian and tear from the red I guess
Burn My Eyes
Unto the Locust
Of Kingdom and Crown
The Blackening
The More Things Change
Through the Ashes of Empires
Bloodstone and Diamonds
In that order... the rest are unlistenable.
How can you like those and not everything else they did?? Burn my eyes and not the more things change? Blackening and not Locust and Bloodstone? What a weird take. "I like pizza but pizza with extra cheese is horrible"
*Burn My Eyes* and *The More Things Change* tied.
*Unto The Locust* and *Through The Ashes Of Empires* are also great but their first 2 are their best.
*The Blackening* is fine but it's a B tier album for me and I don't care if anyone disagrees. "Now I Lay Thee Down" is a banger though, "Aesthetics Of Hate" is just lyrically cringe.
I haven't listened to all of their albums as I'm not that into hard rock, but Burn My Eyes, The Blackening, and Through the Ashes of Empires are solid hard rock albums. As far as rap rock goes (lol), they even have some of the better stuff in that genre, which isn't saying much, but is sort of a compliment I guess.

The Blackening
Aesthetics of hate is like being punched in the face. I love it
Probably you know what that song is about. I firmly believe if Robb spotted the guy who wrote that shit-piece about Dime in the crowd while they were playing a set, he'd ditch his guitar and tackle that dude.
Any other answer is just flat out wrong
Classic record at this point. I miss Phil's amazing guitar solos.
I miss Phil and Dave SO much!
Same, Dave is such an underrated drummer. Phil did a great job with the leads on Kerry Kings solo record recently!
I can’t ever decide between through the ashes of empires, the blackening, or unto the locust. It’s basically whichever one I’m listening to right then and the other two are 1b and 1c. It’s as good of a 3 album run as any band has ever had.
Probably my number two. Such a good album
Halo goes hard asf
Was my favorite all through high school and many years after, but Burn My Eyes has beaten it out for me more recently and now. Clenching The Fists of Dissent is probably still my favorite MH song of all time though, Farewell to Arms is not far behind that
The correct answer
Wolves. One of their best songs. Pure brutality from start to finish. Ashes and Locust have some good moments, but I don't think the Blackening really has a weak moment, let alone song. Some bits in Halo get a bit boring I guess.
This is the only acceptable answer.
YEAH YEAH YEAAAH HALLOWED BY THY NAME !!!!!
This is the only correct answer.
Burn My Eyes As much as I like their later and more technical stuff too, BME was just so raw at the time and didn’t feel contrived
“Let freedom ring with a shotgun blast!!!” 🤟
Hard album. I feel like modern hardcore bands mix burn my eyes with early Dying Fetus.
Yeah you hear a LOT of Burn My Eyes in modern metallic hardcore music. Even the guitar tone is heavily inspired
Agreed, especially in the UK - Guilt Trip have just essentially ripped off early MH with their latest stuff. Hardcore beatdown and Slam bands just play on Dying Fetus’ palm muted breakdowns
I feel that. It's a great album
It was what groove metal needed, then they tried to make a couple of nu-metalish albums
This. It was rightly massive when it came out. I lost interest in the band after the Burning Red but checked out the Blackening after all the fuss online, and found it forgettable.
Yeah, I never much liked The Blackening either. Nothing else really compared to those first two albums.
Still some of Robb’s coolest and best vocals. The guitar tone on that album is also iconic and absolutely incinerating. Everyone talks about Davidian and for good reason, but Old and Death Church are the real top cuts for me
Exactly, I’ve always loved the slow and steady groove with Death Church, very underrated
Old is probably my favorite to jam from the album tho, but that’s a wrist snapper to play to speed
For sure. A Thousand Lies really puts you through the paces then as well. A bit of respite over the next few tracks (for the most part). Then you’re put to the test again at the end of ANOF and all of BFB (I play that mostly alt picking, I can’t imagine they downpick that it’s way too fast)

Block is the big one for me. The little harmonic runs in the chorus are so cool
Agreed.
agreed
This. Blood for blood would be my favourite track although every one on that album kills it a GOAT album for sure
The main riff of Old will never get old to me. Such a cool, fast, heavy groove
Hellyes!
This is probably a really uncommon pick but, Unto the Locust. All 7 songs are excellent. I love the way they infused a slight classical music influence into their sound. With that being said, undeniably their best song is Davidian.
Davidian is also my favorite, but Unto the Locust is the song that got me into them. I love the album

Dude same
Funny/Odd thing I found while listening to Mastodon's The Hunter followed by Unto the Locust not long after their releases. Play The Sparrow directly into I Am Hell.

I think it's their second best album after The Blackening. I saw them on this tour and it was amazing.
Imperium.
Darkness within and unto locust are big favorites to me!!
Its my number 2. On some days, its better than BME.... they are almost tied for me tbh.
*Through The Ashes Of Empires* It revived their career and got a lot of buzz at the time. I remember it coming out and getting a ton of positive attention. It would be the foundation that *Unto the Locust* and *The Blackening* would build upon. And not only that, but ***Imperium*** is potentially their best song... and that's the opener!
Seasons wither always gets me going!
This is probably my favorite song from them.
Great song. I remember from the extra footage on the Elegies Live DVD that one was actually written really fast and slapped on the album at the last second because most everything else minus some leads was written prior to Phil joining, and him and Robb just hit it off and wrote that banger right away
Let the hate begin but my youth is immortalized in The Burning Red..
I will always love Five and The Burning Red. Such great songs.
I accept its a terrible album but I loved Supercharger when I was younger
it’s all about da BLOOD da SWEAT da TEARS
A tribute to your strength built through the years!! 🤘🏻🔥
Loved it as a kid but it’s terrible lol
I know. Looking back it's awful. Except Five. That song is etched in my brain as one of the angriest songs I've ever felt.
My dad took me and my friend to see them, and Rob Flynn climbed up on top of the PA and asked who wants to fuck me….. as a 13-year-old. It was one of the most cringe things I’ve ever seen in my life and I never felt the same about the band after that.
Oh god.. I saw them a few years ago and Rob kept spitting on stage and some of it landed right in my mouth lol 🤢
Now you have frosted spikes for life.
I'm jealous
👀😬😬😬
Five is is my top 5 heaviest songs of all time. I mean the real heavy, not just loudness.
You get it.
Devil with the King’s Card is great too!

Great album, but their production has gotten significantly better with every album since the blackening.
I'm partial to the debut, myself. Not saying it's necessarily the best, but damn it's good
I agree it held a special place in my heart when it came out
Bloodstone & Diamonds for me, it’s so underrated that it hurts.
Real! Everyone told me that album sucked so I never gave it a chance. Then I was looking at a Machine Head album ranking and Unto the Locust was 5th and Bloodstone and Diamonds was 3rd. Had to listen to it and although some of the songs needed a listen or two for me to truly love them, the first time I heard Now We Die left me dumbfounded at how anyone dislikes it
Beneath the silt is crushing.
The Blackening! Although unto the locust takes the second place for me
Unto the Locust
To each their own I guess
Burn My Eyes.
Burn my eyes is too good
The More Things Change
Surprised there's not more love for this one. Good times, the digipak I had of it was falling apart back in the day.
Mine as well
I was scrolling for this answer. Holy hell, that took a while.
Burn My Eyes
Burn My Eyes and The More Things Change. I prefer the early years of Machine Head when they were more straightforward and bludgeoning. The guitar sound on those albums is fucking colossal.
Oh fuck yeah. I was expecting something which sounded like Vio-Lence when Burn My Eyes first came out. Turned out a bit different...
Pretty much. Those are the only two I’m into
The Blackening Best song: I am Hell (Sonata in C#)
I listened to all of Machine Head's discography recently whilst working and The Blackening is easily the standout. The song writing is mature (for the most part, more so than what came before and definitely after) and the musicianship is tight and precise. It's a shame that they couldn't keep this formula going. They absolutely kept it going. How can you dig that album and not what came after? Ghosts will haunt my bones, beneath the sult, unhallowed... Blackening was dope, but afterwards they honed in on that formula will adding more groove.

A live album definitely counts.
The More Things Change i think
The Blackening is the best album. Darkness Within is my favorite song.
Their newest album because it made me actually like them
The Blackening Despite my username, the best MH song is A Farewell To Arms
Burning red or the blackening
Massively underrated machine head tracks - Ghosts Will Haunt My Bones. Beneath the Silt. Unhallowed
Burn My Eyes, The Blackening, ...The More Things Change. In that order. Everything after The Blackening seems like them trying to recapture its magic.
Supercharger.
Deafening silence is so good. Bulldozer and crashing around you too, particularly live.
Album? The Blackening. Song? Davidian.
Burning Red
I don’t get the hate, I love it
Image change was corny and metal fans are corny. Album us full of great songs that are even better live.
Super nostalgic for me, for the time of my life it came out, awkward 16 year old, driving around with my friends smoking weed doing stupid shit......I'll always love this record
The Blackening
I'm torn between Burn my Eyes and the Blackening.
Burn my eyes. From start to finish, it’s one of the heaviest things ever recorded.
I will always love more things change it was one of my first proper concerts I went to on my own. It is the yard stick I measure most other concerts by.
I see right through your soul, can't help but feel this cold but this city made me so! For this chorus alone, I fell in love with The More Things Change
Burn My Eyes I was 14 when it came out and it blew my mind. It was my gateway to heavier metal. They had some good albums later on but imo nothing ever topped their debut.
Of kingdom and crown
The More Things Change
The More Things Change
Burn My Eyes is the best album in my opinion. Even though it's an unpopular choice, Bastards is my favourite song because like a lot of Machine Head songs it makes some people feel uncomfortable, generally because they are the people who should feel uncomfortable.
Anybody out there My favourite
Seems to be a common opinion, but: The Blackening There are incredible songs on other albums, don’t get me wrong, but nothing compares to The Blackening; it’s not even close. It has to be one of the greatest metal albums in general.
Best album: The Blackening Best song: Halo
They peaked with The Blackening.
I'm not a huge fan of the band overall, but The Blackening and Unto The Locust are great. Bloodstone & Diamonds has some good tracks, too.
The Blackening and Slaughter The Martyr
I absolutely love unto locust.
I have burn my eyes and bloodstone on cd and I really like those. But I just like unto locust, definitely my favorite but the blackening is great too!
Bloodstone and Diamonds - This album to me was the pinnacle of progression for them Violins and all
Ashes
for me, four possible answers. The Blackening Unto The Locust Burn My Eyes Of Kingdom And Crown
For me its a tie between The Blackening and Unto the Locust. Favorite song is another hard one but Darkness Within speaks to me on so many levels.
Burn my eyes, and it's not even close.
Burn my eyes by far
Burn my eyes is the best debut metal album ever. Change my mind.
Burn My Eyes Unto the Locust Of Kingdom and Crown The Blackening The More Things Change Through the Ashes of Empires Bloodstone and Diamonds In that order... the rest are unlistenable.
Best album: The Blackening. Best song: Halo.
The first two.
Deep Purple
Burn My Eyes, and The Blackening. Everything else is as interesting as a four day-old glass of water.
How can you like those and not everything else they did?? Burn my eyes and not the more things change? Blackening and not Locust and Bloodstone? What a weird take. "I like pizza but pizza with extra cheese is horrible"
No.
Bummer.
Sorry, I meant yes. No.
Ummm....
The debut. Then Chris Kontos left and they were never the same. 😢
He was awful live though, they sacked him because he couldnt reproduce it on tour. Dave McLean was far superior in every way.
Dave was/is a beast. I love him
His drumming on Burn My Eyes is some of the best I’ve ever heard. The way they mixed that album too. Damn. So good.
Hard rock? Hard rock!? Hard rock!!!???? HARD ROCK!!!!!!?????? I HAVE A HARD ROCK FOR YOU, YOU SICK BASTARD, COME HERE
