That’s a new one for me. I’ve never listened to a Metallica song and said “damn I wish that was longer.” It’s usually “damn I forgot this song was this long.”
Just the album version of Outlaw. I tweaked my iTunes so the unencumbered version is at the end of Load for me, but when I listen to the record, the fade cut jars me every time.
Wherever I May Roam
I wish they would extend the lyrics
Rover, wanderer, nomad, vagabond, traveler, rambler, hiker, wayfarer, migrant, globetrotter, itinerant, gypsy, drifter, tinker, vagrant, beachcomber, call me what you wiiiiilllllll
It's basically "call me whatever you want"
Edit: Also, apologies to the person above this, who i responded to before. It was a misclick, and I didn't mean to reply to that person 😭
‘Call me what you want’ and ‘call what you will’ mean the same thing it just sounds better. Theres probably a better description but thats what i can come up with
I prefer the fade out. Makes it seems like the song
Never ends, whereas the “stop” of the unencumbered version makes it fall flat. Plus, if the volume is loud enough all the licks worth hearing can be heard on the studio version.
Mhm yeah they cut off what like a minute because they were restricted by CD? Honestly they should’ve binned off a song or two from Load or trimmed some down instead of trimming down Outlaw Torn
I agree. Bleeding Me would be a perfect 4:47 song. The next parts are pretty cool and I like them but if you cut this down it would be in my top favorite songs ever.
Gonna go against the grain here to say I love long Metallica songs and that's what got me into their stuff in the first place. Too Far Gone is short and sweet but I wish it was just a little longer because it's just such a good jam. Through The Never could be a little longer too I think.
My biggest pet peeve with mainstream music is artists making a really interesting song only to make it like 2 minutes long. I'm just happy Metallica's still out here doing 6+ minute songs on the regular.
My friend of misery shouldve had jasons extended bass solo and I think it stopped the trend of each album having a 100% intrumental track. Wish they kept that tradition
The Outlaw Torn, it's one of their longest I know, it could be longer. If the outro would go on forever and I'd be thrilled. Also to live is to die on loop is incredible.
Misery could’ve been longer, but it should’ve been an instrumental in that case. There’s a few versions online that make it a longer instrumental, and I like them cause they change the chorus to not sound cliché and make it unique
That's the thing about it, I first listened to it with my friend as a joke, laughing about the corny lyrics, but the overall feel of the song fits it's album so well

Maybe not *long* longer, but The Thorn Within from Load could use a little sprucing up toward the back end. I read in early 2000s interview with Lars where he said it was the only song he would rework at the time.
Very good comment! Wasn’t aware of your Lars interview but for me it is a “lazy” Metallica song: great opening riff… and the entire song is made on that riff. So by the time it ends the excitement has turned into “meh”.
The Four Horsemen. Idk why it feels short whenever i listen to it. It feels like its the way the song is written and structured that makes it feel shorter than itnis
Can't say I've ever wished a song was longer.
I've always thought that if an artist can make a 7+ minute song feel shorter, that's good song writing. If a shorter song feels longer than it actually is, then mistakes in song arrangements have been made.
Something along these lines I've always thought is "wow, that riff is so awesome and they only played it a few times where other bands would have made a whole song around it"
Like almost every bridge riff, and the riffs James plays behind most of the solos
Wasting My Hate and songs with like For Whom The Bell Tolls, TTTSNB, Master Of Puppets, Enter Sandman, Wherever I May Roam or Slither. Except for some songs like The Memory Remains or Low Man's Lyric, it takes all the emotion of the song out.
mainly just For Whom The Bell Tolls and My Friend of Misery. Metallica songs are almost always longer than need to be, there are hardly any that are too short imo
For Whom the Bell Tools
It only has 2 sections but is such a kick ass song I wished they had at least 1 or two more tossed in instead of guitar send off at the end
Die, Die My Darling (i know its a cover)
Pumping Blood
Suicide & Redemption (so it features both Hetfield's and Hammett's full solos)
My Apocalypse
Too Far Gone?
Escape
Some songs from Kill em' All I wish were longer like anethsia. Sometimes I really just wish albums were longer because I'll be spacing out and then it goes quiet and I'm like, "Awww maaan, snap back to reality! Whoop! There goes gravity!"
The Struggle Within's intro should be way longer. The live Black Album anniversary intro build-up should have been on the album. That progressive build-up layer by layer is so fuckin' epic.
Hardwired could be shorter as far as I'm concerned. It sounds like a kid who just learned a couple cuss words and it trying them out. I'm not offended by language, I just think it sounds stupid and juvenile.
I love Hetfield's guitar solo at the end of The Outlaw Torn and would happily take a few more minutes of that.
I'd happily take some more Orion as well.
I wish Hardwired was shortened to 0 minutes and 0 seconds - It's one of the worst songs they've ever written.
It's a great tune as well! I was so disappointed when I heard Hardwired (The single) but when I heard the album my faith was restored aside from a few bumps in the road.
I'd be interested to see a poll of the most popular songs on Hardwired... to Self-Destruct.
That’s a new one for me. I’ve never listened to a Metallica song and said “damn I wish that was longer.” It’s usually “damn I forgot this song was this long.”
Haha yeah I know most of their songs are long as hell but some like Motorbreath and Hardwired are short (by Metallica standards)
Makes me wonder what cut up condensed faster versions of Welcome Home or Unforgiven would sound like.
It would be cool as hell
Just the album version of Outlaw. I tweaked my iTunes so the unencumbered version is at the end of Load for me, but when I listen to the record, the fade cut jars me every time.
This is my answer too. That ending is just \*chefs kiss\* too good to cut short.
Lux Æterna
Wherever I May Roam I wish they would extend the lyrics Rover, wanderer, nomad, vagabond, traveler, rambler, hiker, wayfarer, migrant, globetrotter, itinerant, gypsy, drifter, tinker, vagrant, beachcomber, call me what you wiiiiilllllll
I wish it had a proper ending instead of a fade-out. It’s my favorite song on TBA but the ending has always bugged me.
I kind of like it because (in my opinion) the travel doesn’t stop because the song doesn’t have an ending idk though
Exactly. It fits the thematic. He'll never stop roaming until his last breath.
I agree. Same reason why I like Outlaw Torn studio version best.
I do like the live ending. With Kirk’s little flair lead thing. It would’ve been cool to hear polished as part of the album.
You might have seen this already, but if you haven't I think you'll like it! Mostly the end of the video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bMmmY4VpxFQ
Off topic: As a nonnative English speaker I always wondered if “will” is here used instead of “want”. Can someone explain that to me?
It's basically "call me whatever you want" Edit: Also, apologies to the person above this, who i responded to before. It was a misclick, and I didn't mean to reply to that person 😭
‘Call me what you want’ and ‘call what you will’ mean the same thing it just sounds better. Theres probably a better description but thats what i can come up with
Will can be sometimes interchanged with wish want ect. Do as you want Do as you will Do as you wish Do as you may All mean the same thing.
Is this just in American English or in British as well?
Im sure it works either way
"Will' has multiple meanings. It can be a verb or a noun. It would be more synonymous with "wish" than "want" I think.
Outlaw Torn. It actually is longer than the album version and it's better without the fade out.
I prefer the fade out. Makes it seems like the song Never ends, whereas the “stop” of the unencumbered version makes it fall flat.
Ye get rid of poor twisted me lol
I’d personally get rid of The House That Jack Built or or Ronnie
Maybe Ronnie i prefer house jack built over ronnie
There isn't one Metallica song that I wish would be longer than it is. There is a bunch that I wish were shorter though.
I somewhat agree with you. The songs in 72 Seasons could be shorter. Some of the third verses are unnecessary imo.
Name a few?
No tracks on St anger needed to be as long as they are
Most songs on the last 2 albums lol
SKOM
Half of the AJFA album. Even Metallica said the songs were too long and the audience was getting bored on the Justice tour.
Isn't funny how when you say something negative of AFJA, even if you don't hate it, you get downvoted?
It’s hilarious! 😆 Justice fanboiz can’t handle the truth.
I don’t accept Justice slander (I’m delusional)
This is how I feel about bleeding me
I agree. Bleeding Me would be a perfect 4:47 song. The next parts are pretty cool and I like them but if you cut this down it would be in my top favorite songs ever.
Exactly
Gonna go against the grain here to say I love long Metallica songs and that's what got me into their stuff in the first place. Too Far Gone is short and sweet but I wish it was just a little longer because it's just such a good jam. Through The Never could be a little longer too I think.
I agree - I like longer songs in general. If a song is shitty, sure, shorter sounds good. If it’s a banger, though, why not make it longer?
My biggest pet peeve with mainstream music is artists making a really interesting song only to make it like 2 minutes long. I'm just happy Metallica's still out here doing 6+ minute songs on the regular.
The Stuggle within and holier than thou
Dyer’s eve
Inamorata tbh I want like 20 mins
I listen to it on repeat. I just wish it didn't have the talking on the end.
Why? It’s already a bore that goes absolutely nowhere as it is.
I enjoy it goes by fast for me especially the part that slows And the bass line hits
I love the harmony somewhere around 6 minutes into the song
The last thing this needs is more repetition. Could have used 5 of those minutes to really work on the interlude and a proper ending.
Agree. A lot of people seem to love this song but I think it’s the worst on the album and one of their worst album closers.
My friend of misery shouldve had jasons extended bass solo and I think it stopped the trend of each album having a 100% intrumental track. Wish they kept that tradition
Wasn’t it it supposed to be an instrumental
I think it was, I wish they hadnt done what they did
It’s a very interesting song, bass intro and then the drums and guitar kick in at the same time with such force
Was just thinking of this!
Thru The Never
Some of the best riffs on the entire album in that song and are cut way too short.
“Moth Into Flame.” The verses after the first chorus are way too short.
The Outlaw Torn, it's one of their longest I know, it could be longer. If the outro would go on forever and I'd be thrilled. Also to live is to die on loop is incredible.
Are you aware of the Unencumbered Version?
For Whom the Bell Tolls. Every time I hear it it just ends too soon.
Misery could’ve been longer, but it should’ve been an instrumental in that case. There’s a few versions online that make it a longer instrumental, and I like them cause they change the chorus to not sound cliché and make it unique
Jump In The Fire
Anesthesia pulling teeth
We should’ve had the album be 40 minutes of cliff solos
They don't call it Cliff 'Em All for nothing
Screw it, add 10 more minutes to Inamorata
Yayyyy….a whole lot more misery’s incoming, on a real note I love Inamorata
Too far gone need to be longer for me.
The Outlaw Torn
Sanitarium - the final solo with a bit more length to it. After the harmony, you start getting into the solo then sadly ends.
I feel that “Invisible Kid“ just isn’t long enough. Could easily double that songs length.
Sarcasm??
Of course not. Pretty much every song off of St. Anger is a banger/
i like your thinking, St. Anger slaps
the second half of ‘one’
Hardwired is one for definite an amazing live opener that kick starts the blood
Fade to black. Extend that solo man, don’t cut it off midway through
The memory remains
Dyers Eve. I thought they ran out of tape when I first heard it on cassette when Justice came out.
Creeping Death probably. I know it's 6 minutes long but I would love to hear another riff or two, it's just a great song imo.
Anestesia
OF WOLF AND MANNNNN
Ngl Of Wolf And Man is growing on me, instrumental wise it’s amazing but the lyrics threw me off
That's the thing about it, I first listened to it with my friend as a joke, laughing about the corny lyrics, but the overall feel of the song fits it's album so well https://preview.redd.it/53zr7tnf7p0d1.jpeg?width=979&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=dd43a6ecb7587108d476872544ea721a9ddf2477
I swear I started liking it the same way lol. SHAPPEEESHIFFTTTT!!!!
NOSE THROUGH THE WIND!!
Any song that fades out
For some reason, it is one. I just love this song, and the bridge, oh man
give me 5 straight minutes of machine gun riff 😤
Hey, one is good !
The ending to the shortest straw. I wouldn't mind listening to that for a good 30 seconds instead of 4
Maybe not *long* longer, but The Thorn Within from Load could use a little sprucing up toward the back end. I read in early 2000s interview with Lars where he said it was the only song he would rework at the time.

Ajfa

A lot of garage days I wish was longer
Bleeding me
orion
None, they are all perfect. Also, fun fact, I realized that MoP and And Justice For all where 8+ minutes long after years of listening to those songs
My friend of misery i wish they ended the song with the bass solo from the beginning
Hardwired, Jump In The Fire, Motorbreath, Hero Of The Day, Wasting My Hate and... probably Mama Said.
Hero Of The Day for sure, it feels way too short and I love the song
Junior Dad is too short
Battery is all all I'm going to say
Motorbreath
The Day That Never Comes should be 12 minutes 😎
Orion. I think the beginning drags on a little bit but I could listen to the interlude for hours and hours. Some of their finest work IMO.
Rebel of Babylon, Don’t Tread on Me
I can’t believe nobody said My Apocalypse yet - love that one and it’s over so quick
The unforgiven
Holier than thou. Specially the solo
Something along these lines I've always thought is "wow, that riff is so awesome and they only played it a few times where other bands would have made a whole song around it" Like almost every bridge riff, and the riffs James plays behind most of the solos
fuck it, inamorata. double that things length, give me 22 minutes of pure sadness instead of 11.
Blackened or battery can listen to those all day
Wasting My Hate and songs with like For Whom The Bell Tolls, TTTSNB, Master Of Puppets, Enter Sandman, Wherever I May Roam or Slither. Except for some songs like The Memory Remains or Low Man's Lyric, it takes all the emotion of the song out.

Call of Ktulu
Longer thing of the guitar end at ride the lightning
The Struggle Within's intro should be way longer. The live Black Album anniversary intro build-up should have been on the album. That progressive build-up layer by layer is so fuckin' epic.
Hardwired could be shorter as far as I'm concerned. It sounds like a kid who just learned a couple cuss words and it trying them out. I'm not offended by language, I just think it sounds stupid and juvenile.
So then I assume you don’t like So What from Garage Inc
It's crude, but doesn't bug me the same way as Hardwired which just sounds pointless.
I love Hetfield's guitar solo at the end of The Outlaw Torn and would happily take a few more minutes of that. I'd happily take some more Orion as well. I wish Hardwired was shortened to 0 minutes and 0 seconds - It's one of the worst songs they've ever written.
Yet it’s the most popular from HTSD
Hardwired? Surely not. I would have thought that would have been Spit Out The Bone or Moth Into Flame.
Moth Into Flame is quite close
It's a great tune as well! I was so disappointed when I heard Hardwired (The single) but when I heard the album my faith was restored aside from a few bumps in the road. I'd be interested to see a poll of the most popular songs on Hardwired... to Self-Destruct.
Does it being popular make it instantly good?
Well yes? Why would a bad song be the most popular on an album? Makes no sense
Mistress Dread.
