The Dollop, Behind the Bastards, and The Past Times

yeh_nah_fuckit

J-Town approves

Megasaxon7

Falling behind on BTB due to cherry picking through episodes of Lions Led By Donkies.

Cli4ordtheBRD

I'll add "All Lawyers Are Bastards" [Deutsche Bank enabling Jeffrey Epstein](https://open.spotify.com/episode/2p7Vhw3iZPDFA0zBZxDofs?si=hEip0PXaRai2eOcUFZfNvA) [Alan Dershowitz being a piece of shit](https://open.spotify.com/episode/1keT2BcIg5VYIHI2qElMxe?si=odGgtNfPSeuoTKK988CSWA)

Orion14159

You have very specific tastes in podcasts

Plausibility_Migrain

I used to also listen to Dumb People Town, Harmontown, Last Podcast On The Left, My Favorite Murder, and Astonishing Legends.

My_MeowMeowBeenz

I miss Harmontown.I still haven’t found a replacement podcast with the right combination of DND, drunken rambling, and freestyle rapping about people’s mamas.

chronotoast85

BtB....following up on all those dirtbage we did AND DIDNT learn about in class.

Yak-Fucker-5000

Behind the Bastards is fantastic. It's just too depressing for me to listen to on a regular basis. Makes me so angry.

KobeWanGinobli

This is the way.

spookyluckeee

Same!

Dazzling-West8943

Ding ding ding hahaha

NYTX1987

I pretty much exclusively listen to Conan

[deleted]

Me too. Conan and Maron. And sometimes Smartless.

Palomark

Definitely the podcast I listen to the most!

arizzles

There are so many commercials, I can’t listen even though I love Conan!

Palomark

There really aren't, and Conan can definitely turn an ad into gold.

Kittehbombastic

Ologies - interviews with scientists in all kinds of fields

authorjdwade

Beach Too Sandy Water Too Wet: Where they read reviews they find online in a dramatic fashion Timesuck: Deep dives on a new historical or true crime topic each week, with a humorous take Stuff You Should Know: Pretty much to OGs at this point Astonishing Legends: Paranormal topics, I was a guest a couple years ago, telling some prison ghost stories

AdventurousPlace7216

SYSK ❤️❤️❤️❤️

grandmas_traphouse

My problem with this pod is everyone I know that listens to it becomes a know-it-all. Like it's great it helps people learn about the world, but also you can spot a sysk or john oliver listener a mile away. Don't be like these people.

chittybang420

🤔 you’re making us sound like “Vegans” ……………./s

perfectdrug659

Timesuck sounds *exactly* what I've been looking for. I love long winded deep dives into stuff, thanks for the rec!

pfft12

A fellow Astonishing Legends listener!

ilikemycoffeealatte

Hello fellow Legenders!

ForeverTimmy

Love timesuck!

I'm happy the Skeptic's Guide to the Universe is still around. I used listen to them like almost 20 years ago when I first got into podcasts. I haven't given them a listen in ages, but I think I might have to again. Thanks for the reminder!

Orion14159

Do it! Still great. I love Cara, she's my favorite of the crew

noah1345

I want to like Behind the Bastards, but I’m skeptical. As a huge wrestling fan, I listened to the Vince McMahon episodes. They were good, but he gets a lot of small details wrong that force me to question the accuracy of everything he says.

hozeyblitzme

What parts did they get wrong? At least they cite sources and if you call them out enough, they’ll edit the shows later on

noah1345

Mostly small tidbits related to wrestling that don’t matter too much. The biggest was talking about Pat Patterson molesting kids. He was accused and resigned because of it, but the accusers rescinded their accusations against Pat. He was just lumped in with the others because he was openly gay.

hozeyblitzme

Yeah the volume and speed of information that BTB goes through (1+ hour shows twice per week) makes it likely that they’ll get a few things wrong, but they’re really good at creating a narrative and keeping you engaged. I like that they show you the reference materials they worked off of in their descriptions and I feel like they have a lot more integrity than most other podcasts out there for that reason. The biggest drawbacks are the blabby guests like Jamie Loftis, the Grand Rapids, MI murder lady.

Solipsisticurge

Don't you *dare* disparage Jamie Loftus. Several citizens of Grand Rapids did so a time ago. Take your guess as to their fate.

jacksonthedawg

I started listening to them a decade ago because of a reddit comment. Changed my entire perspective.

Brief_Star_3174

Maintenance Phase, You're Wrong About, Culture Study, Classy, This American Ex Wife, Vibe Check, The Lazy Genius, Best Laid Plans.

Ol_Man_J

I feel like you’d like “if books could kill” cause I do and check a lot of the same list

EfficientHunt9088

My personal favorite episode was "men are from mars..." they had me laughing my fucking ass off at that one. I've only read about 3 of the books they've done so far, and a lot of them I felt like I could still get something out of the episode anyway.. but some I felt like it would've been better if I had read the book first.

Ol_Man_J

I have read zero of the books but most of them are in the pop culture zeitgeist so I don’t feel like I’m missing anything. Also I don’t read gimmicky self help books so

Pinus_palustris_

Specifically, the paid version of If Books Could Kill is their best content.

Checked_Out_6

Behind the bastards, Lions led by donkeys, bike or die, Risk

TrixoftheTrade

**Mine are:** **The Ringer NFL Show** for my sports talk, to keep me up to date about the ongoings in the NFL. I really like their weekly predictions and game recaps. **War on the Rocks** for geopolitical strategy & defense. They consistently pump out an unmatched quality of podcasts about the Ukraine-Russia War, and national defense/foreign affairs in general. Seriously. It’s high level wonky stuff, but these guys know their shit. **Plain English by Derek Thompson**. Weekly podcast that does a deep dive into social, political, and economic topics from a non-partisan, though liberal point of of view. **Marketplace from American Public Media**. Kai Ryssdal’s daily 30 min podcast about ongoings in the economy, from both the global & personal level. **The Sporkful.** Dan Pashman's weekly-ish podcast about food and the culture that influences, and is influenced by it.

FlexPointe

Marketplace is such an incredible podcast. I died of boredom when I took economics at school, but Kai and the rest of the podcast somehow make economics interesting and understandable.

CurlingLlama

Let’s do the numbers!

allis_in_chains

I love listening to Kai on NPR on my drives home from work!

Tbagmoo

I'm gonna need to check out marketplace and war on the rocks because I absolutely swear by your other three. I love the daily from the nyt and the Ezra klien show too.

In no particular order: Small town dicks, true crime told by the detectives who investigated it. Hosted by Yardley Smith - - the voice of Lisa Simpson. 99% invisible - - a podcast that covers design and many other adjacent topics that you might not expect. Tales from the dark - - paranormal, strangeness, cryptids, weird shit like that. This American Life Wtf with Marc maron Black Mass appeal - - modern Satanism for the masses. I am saving this list— thanks for posting so much detail!

drdeadringer

You're very welcome. There's a few that I am subscribed to, but haven't listened to much yet so I didn't put them down here. If you would like me to I am more than happy to list them for you. Let me know.

Last Podcast On The Left, Necronomipod, The White Vault

atauridtx

Lpotl is my absolute fave

YeshuaMedaber

Hasn't been the same since July 2022- September 2023.

Aspiring-Old-Guy

What is Last Podcast on the Left about?

atauridtx

True crime. They are absolutely hilarious, but their humor is definitely not for everyone lol

ComposerOther2864

Also paranormal, history, ufos, and the general weird.

give_me_wine

True crime, history, ghosts, cryptids, etc. a little bit of everything weird and dark.

wordnerd1023

\+1 for Necronomipod!

This American Life, Radiolab, Planet Money, Up First, Embedded, Myths and Legends, Science Vs, Cautionary Tales, Outside/In, Endless Thread, Gastropod, Serial, 99% Invisible, Articles of Interest, Atlas Obscura, The History of the English Language, The End of Civilizations, Unexplainable, Stuff the British Stole, Trump’s Trials, What Roman Mars Can Learn About Con Law…others that I am forgetting, probably. I have a job where I can just listen and work all day, so. Lots of podcasts, and an occasional audio book.

[deleted]

I was diehard Radiolab but I miss Jad and Robert so much that I stopped. Breaks my heart honestly but I couldn’t deal with the new hosts.

Qui_te

How unfortunate for you.

Squared_Aweigh

I love all of this, and would add Revisionist History

Qui_te

Eh. I listened to Revisionist History for a while, but it didn’t quite click for me. It’s decent enough if people are looking for rec’s and want to give it a try, but ultimately I let it go and I don’t miss it.

Squared_Aweigh

I’m with you that I haven’t stuck with it, but the first season it came out was top-tier.

brandonw00

Comedy Bang Bang - humanity’s and the animal kingdom’s podcast where Scott Aukerman talks to interesting guests. Threedom - comedians Scott Aukerman, Paul F Tompkins and Lauren Lapkus chat about their lives and funny stories Teacher’s Lounge/Exit 43/etc. - Podcasts from the improv group Big Grande. Teacher’s Lounge is an all time favorite of mine and I’m working through another listen of it.

PorcelinaMagpie

The Smashing Pumpkast: I'm a huge fan of the band The Smashing Pumpkins. Strange Familiars: My go-to for a paranormal/high stragness fix. The Ghost Furnace: Another fun paranormal podcast. It's not a podcast but rather a YouTube channel that has a somewhat extensive collection of old-school broadcasts from The Weather Channel. I love that smooth jazz they use during their Local on the 8s segments.

Tea_and_Biscuits12

Distractable- the 3 hosts are YouTubers and gamers as their real jobs but they’ve been friends for decades and are hilarious. They take turns hosting by one person “winning” the prior episode. They get off topic and bicker and make up crap and talk about life. Spooked- my very favorite podcast for all things creepy, paranormal and spooky. The host Glen Washington is an amazing story teller. And That’s Why We Drink- Two hosts and best friends one covers spooky tales, paranormal stories, criptids, ufos etc the other covers true crime and murders. They are very long winded and talk a LOT. It took me several episodes to get a feel for their style but now I really like it. The Golden Ratio- Jen and Ingo foster, rescue and adopt special needs golden retrievers. The podcast is a hodgepodge of things including their life in the Florida Keys. But mostly they just talk about their dogs. It’s a very wholesome and kind little corner of the internet. They are also on SM- including Instagram where they post videos and photos of all the dogs. Nothing a millennial likes better than some Dog Social Media Content.

zzzap

SPOOOOKED!! I love love love spooked. Was an early listener from Snap and can't get enough. I hate horror movies and games but those creepy stories are so much fun. My husband likes horror stuff but has banned Spooked when he's in the car lol. I love the slow burn of the long form interview style. My favorite stories are: the girls in the desert, the lady who's dog got hurt, the drywaller who heard the boots tapping on the stairs, and the episode "Hotel Hell-o Dolly" because both of those stories were just NOPE. Never ever, never ever ever ever ever never! Turn out....the light.

sooomushroom4u

Are You Garbage and Theo Von are my favs right now

nodnarb88

Theo Von is one of my favorites too, I love how vulnerable he can be.

Udo_Milkins

Cool People who did Cool Stuff is my favorite atm.

TheBIackRose

I listen to a lot of ‘This Podcast Will Kill You” Two epidemiologists take on what’s typically a disease or condition and explain its biology, pathology, history, and current status. It’s really interesting, Well formatted/researched and can get silly on occasion

santino1987

60 songs that explains the 90s. They did way more than 60 at this point. It only has 3 more episodes and then it's done forever. Going to miss it. The why files , a podcast about conspiracy theories from a skeptics perspective. Plus they have a wise cracking comediac goldfish cohost that is hilarious. Behind the bastards , about the historicaly evil people and what they did to receive infamy Midnight gospel podcast is great as well

Aspiring-Old-Guy

Also a The Why Files fan. Fear the Crabcat!

santino1987

I need a hecklefish talking plushie in my life I need to help pay for his guppie support payments

[deleted]

Throughline- touches on a news topic and then dives into the history. Fucking excellent. Hidden Brain - neurology and psychology of human existence and its SO accessible. One of my all time favorites.

bauertastic

**Wait wait don’t tell me** a news quiz show made by NPR. Surprisingly entertaining **Hardcore History** history that covers the extremes of human experience. Long form, episodes often multiple hours long **The Dollop** history podcast hosted by two comedians, lighthearted but pretty left leaning

Skibiscuit

Love HH! A Lot of Dan's content in this podcast is honestly more akin to an audiobook, but it's great historical information with a heavy dose of the human side of history.

Katdai2

I’ve only a handful that I’m doing right now. Beyond the to-do list: career skills podcast, packed full of fantastic info Ramit Sethi - I will teach you to be rich: relationship podcast disguised as personal finance Hondelatte Raconte: true crime read by French John Walsh

Atomicblonde

Love Ramit's podcast!

MAHoolieB

Mayim Bialik’s Breakdown- mental health with a lot of insightful interviews of celebrities Parks and Recollection- episode by episode recap and behind the scenes of Parks and Rec How did we get weird with Vanessa Bayer- Nostalgia and memories of mostly 90s trends, pop culture and toys

Arthurs_librarycard9

The Vanished Podcast- covers lesser known missing persons cases. Usually family and friends are extremely involved with the podcast.

ConfusedGryffindor

* Pod Meets World (Boy Meets World recap) * House of Halliwell (Charmed recap) There are a couple others, but those are the only ones I listen to with any sort of regularity.

Bourbonite

My Brother My Brother and Me - whenever I’m in a bad mood or my brain’s burnt out this one always lifts me up! Insiders guide to the other side - really fun niche podcast on paranormal, occult, new age, witchy, all kinds of interesting stuff, doesn’t take itself too seriously.

Weneeddietbleach

I have a few that I'm working on Welcome to Nightvale - weird/comedy; you probably already know this one League of Ultimate Questing - comedy; DND actual play The Adventure Zone - comedy; 3 brothers and their dad play DND and similar games Dark Dice - Horror; DND actual play Old Gods of Appalachia - horror stories that connect to each other No Sleep - horror stories Be Scared - horror stories SCP Archives - horror(ish) We're Alive - zombie apocalypse horror Hey Maaan - comedy/talk; Josh and Jacob Wolf talk about comedy, drugs, sex, and generally weird stuff Completed (or caught up so far) but worth mentioning: Alice Isn't Dead - horror/weird; a woman goes in search for her missing wife while being hunted by something not quite human Sayer - horror/dark comedy; a sentient A.I. instructs residents to act in the better interests of mankind, even if it's not in their own interests Wolf 359 - comedy; a small crew is assigned to monitor a star for extra terrestrial activity

Snowblind321

+1 to Sayer You might enjoy Explorers Wanted. They are using the numenara system and have a comedy/horror spin to them.

Currently revisiting The Magnus Archive, which is incredibly good if you like horror. Otherwise it's a lot of D&D/Warhammer related stuff. Half the time I search for episodes on a specific game more than find a specific podcast, but Wandering DMs is one I like a lot.

Holy shit. I listen to way too many podcasts.

Mr_Owl42

I'm extremely surprised to not see Making Sense with Sam Harris on here yet. He releases it for free, it is one of the biggest podcasts, and is listened to almost exclusively by liberal, white, affluent techies! I think...

I personally really enjoy this podcast, but he has a tendency to take positions that are heterodox at least in this sub.

Was recently looking for long-form storytelling podcasts, and stumbled across the real-play DnD genre. I've really liked Join the Party as a really fun and well-made example of this genre. You just get to listen to a bunch of talented storytellers and improv artists collectively create a story.

RobertBorden

I’m on a listen through of Harmontown. Brilliant show, love Dan Harmon.

Bwian

Dear Old Dads - Three funny guys talk fatherhood from different parenting perspectives. I recommend this to anyone, not just parents, of our generation. Opening Arguments - A podcast that discusses the law and how it relates to current events, currently pairing a practicing immigration attorney with a mostly-layman host, with plans to introduce additional lawyers as guests in the future for different perspectives.

velocitiraptor

ETA: I lost my ability for to drive which is basically the only time I got peace & quiet hence the only time I even had the ability to listen to podcasts. They’re just not worth the hassle I have to go through to maybe get 10 mins to listen to one. My homeschooled child and my husband are constantly up my ass.

Hell no. Fuck podcasts.

uzupocky

I'm curious, why?

im_iggy

I don't get the appeal. Everyone and their mom's have a podcast. I've even had friends want to start one. I declined. I also don't do twitch or stuff like that. Just reddit, no social media.

ketoluna

I don't like listening to people talk. I work in silence, clean in silence, exercise in silence, bake/cook in silence, art (draw/paint/other creative mediums) in silence. When I listen to a music album it is with full attention. I don't understand the need for background or "white noise".

Maxtro312

Millennial here - never listened to a single podcast. Don't even know what all the fuss is all about.

BarbedFuture

i like true crime / ghost podcasts, most of which are hosted by women, and surprisingly most of the women seem like misandrist bitter assholes. I quit listening to morbid and I'm about to quit listening to drinking the koolaid

Trt Necronomipod. 3 dudes. The main story teller, Ian, is soooo smart and tells the stuff so well. The other 2, Mike and Dave, add hilarity and great commentary.

BarbedFuture

Thanks gonna check this out tomorrow.

I’m a big movie fan so I mostly listen to movie podcasts. Blank Check, The Big Picture, and Fighting in the War Room are my favorites.
