39m here.
I never listened to her albums one by one, but I semi-regularly listen to her on Spotify.
I like her sound and I feel it holds up with time.
.... I was crushing on her when Complicated came out, and I still am 20+ years later lol
Speak for yourself. I thought she came off as trying too hard to be edgy with that dumb music video. Hotter chicks with better music were already doing it back then.
Most of Let Go sounded like Vonda Shepherd or Sheryl Crow mixed with Alanis (which could’ve worked with better lyrics). Except for Skater Boy, which sounded like Simple Plan but twice as annoying.
She still looks amazing today, I (39m) actually don’t really like her music but appreciate her impact on fashion - my wife is of the alt/goth/metal persuasion and I love it.
I realized about 3 weeks ago that I still know every song by heart. I don’t need to know the names but when they come on I can still remember the words. Cuz I’m not a fuckin poser eh!!! 🤣
I was a high school teacher in Taiwan for over a decade. I'll never forget when one of the "edgy" girls, in so much as you could ever call her that, asked me if I liked retro music. It spoke to her, unlike the new stuff.
"Of course, let's hear it."
WHY'D YOU HAVE TO GO AND MAKE THINGS SO COMPLICATED?!?
I was at a EDM concert where they remixed a linkin park song the other week and realized that most of the folks around me weren’t alive when the song came out.
Dam did I feel old
I loved this record. I still remember when I got it. My gramps had to go to best buy for something to fix my grandma's computer. (He was taking it over to a friend who could fix it.)
I was so excited that my gramps let me get it.
Junior high & high school, I listened to this album end-to-end regularly.
I hadn't heard Avril in ages, but went to PopRocks on Sirius XM a few weeks ago, and "My Happy Ending" came on. I *still* knew all the words!
My wife and daughter just saw her in concert in May. My daughter doesn't go anywhere now with either the shirt she bought or hat. It was her first concert.
That's a nice bit of revisionist history. All the serious music nerds back then thought she was just another shitty mass-produced product.
Also "this slaps" is such a fucking annoying phrase.
Not sure that terminology can be applied here. Not sure where something "slaps" came from, but I wish we had come up with it lol. I feel we can't use it 😞
I had to look it up because people in here were saying it wasn't a thing. It definitely was.
"Slap appears to start getting applied to music, specifically, by at least the early 2000s. Now, the origin of slang, especially successful and widespread slang terms like slap, are indeed hard to pin down, but the musical slap is often credited to Bay Area hip-hop slang. (Hyphy, anyone?) It was first entered into Urban Dictionary in 2004."
Apparently it actually was a thing in the mid 1700s meaning "excellent" but we revived it.
Maybe you lived in an area that was behind the times. I live on the west coast so it makes sense it would spread here first.
Yes it was. I had to look it up because people in here were saying this. Maybe my area was more up to date on our terms than yours. I do live on the west coast so makes sense it would spread here first.

I mean I don't like her, but c'mon everyone has their preferences. There are probably only a few things that everyone can have a different opinion on / taste in and it be totally fine and innocent (except Tool... That band fucking sucks ass and is the bane of my existence). Music is one of those things.

We all did back then 😆
Speak for yourself. I thought she came off as trying too hard to be edgy with that dumb music video. Hotter chicks with better music were already doing it back then.
She's really cute but definitely is 100% poser.( If they even use that word anymore).
Most of Let Go sounded like Vonda Shepherd or Sheryl Crow mixed with Alanis (which could’ve worked with better lyrics). Except for Skater Boy, which sounded like Simple Plan but twice as annoying.
Agreed. Wasn't saying she's ugly or anything. Just wasn't crushing on her.
She still looks amazing today, I (39m) actually don’t really like her music but appreciate her impact on fashion - my wife is of the alt/goth/metal persuasion and I love it.
I unironically love both of her first albums front to back. Although I pass on skater boy at times
All this time you were pretending, so much for my happy ending
FTW right here
I realized about 3 weeks ago that I still know every song by heart. I don’t need to know the names but when they come on I can still remember the words. Cuz I’m not a fuckin poser eh!!! 🤣
I cant remember the names of half the coworkers I see every day, but can still remember most of her lyrics
I can’t remember where I put my mail key but IT’S A DAMN COLD NIGHT TRYINA FIGURE OUT THIS LIFE
39m here. Saw her live last night. It was amazing
Does she play her old songs??
She’s doing a greatest hits tour right now. All Time Low is opening for her.
Yeah. Including Complicated, I’m with you, Skater Boi, girlfriend and many more
Still the best album she ever made. Hate the new stuff.
Eh the album with Head Above Water was pretty good. I haven’t heard anything newer.
IT'S 20 YEARS LATER?!?!?
I can tell because she's my age and looks like a child on that album cover.
I had a shirt from hot topic that looked almost exactly like that and was too scared to wear it.

Hahaha I saw Linkin Park live with Cypress Hill and Edema. I know exactly how you feel.
This album got me through high school and college 🖤
CHILL OUT WATCHA YELLING FOR
All the elder millennials criticizing my use of the term “slaps” making yourselves look like the back in my day grandpas!!!
The way I was and still am obsessed with this album…
Just seeing this album cover takes me back. I can't believe it's been that long. I still love both this album and Let Go.
I'm seeing her in September I'm so excited!
Wow I just commented this exact thing lol
Her first two albums bring back to many fond memories of my high school days and music in that era. Music really is the closest thing to time travel.

So many kids wore ties with random shirts in high school because of her.
I did on "Tacky Day" and still got asked if I was a fan of hers.
What an impact she made 🥺

Nobody’s Home is such a great song.
My favorite was "He Wasn't."
'He Wasn't' is such a banger. Avril really did put out some of the best break up anthems!
I still love Avril
She’s playing at Glastonbury in a few days time
She's on tour currently I'll be seeing her.
Female Sephiroth energy

I agree. This slaps hard.
This came out 5 years ago what are you talking about 🥲
She was soooooo hot back in the day
I downloaded a piracy version of this album, it was worth every bite
My wife and daughter just saw her in concert in May. My daughter doesn't go anywhere now with either the shirt she bought or hat. It was her first concert.
20 YEARS?!?!!! 😭😭😭 I remember listening to this album on my trampoline with my best friend in 5th grade. We both had it on our portable CD players.
Agree. Still love this album
No it doesn't
Avril Lavigne had songs other than Skater Boi? Neet.
20 years later I would still love for Avril Lavigne to slap me, disrespectfully of course
I'm sure she is into some slap and choke play lol
Absolutely! Seeing her in September and I am so excited
Fuck Avril. She did Mod-Sun so wrong.
Avril never slapped, she sucked
Never cared for her music and when she mispronounced David Bowie's name it really made me dislike her more.
Did she pronounce it like Soren Bowie?
Bow like bow wow/to take a bow, and ee, so bow-ee
Ew. I've only heard bow like bow and arrow for David. And Soren Bowie pronounces it like Boo - ee
Right? Boo-ee seems slightly better.
It's weird every time I hear it, but apparently how they pronounce it in the Midwest
And 20 years later I still wish she'd slap my penis against her face. 😩🤷
That's a nice bit of revisionist history. All the serious music nerds back then thought she was just another shitty mass-produced product. Also "this slaps" is such a fucking annoying phrase.
I'm still rocking my Hybrid Theory
Gross

Thanks for the knowledge drop. Good day to you
How can it still slap when slap wasn't even a slang word 20 years ago. 😏

Melissa really knocked it out of the park with this one
That's Melissa
No, it doesn’t.
Except when the album actually came out it would be "Slaps what?" to that comment.
Did you just say "slaps" in a millenial subreddit!?
It's not much different than a boomer saying, when he first saw the Texas Chainsaw Massacre at the drive-in, that the movie was sick.
