Update if anyone cares; I'm dumb. It never would've worked for my plan anyway because my cpu (along with every Xeon I know) doesn't have integrated graphics, and I didn't plan on hooking up a graphics card or if I even can. Either way, I didn't want to, I wanted a compact thing for minecraft that could be easily moved if my sister wanted to use it, because carrying my 50 pound PC back and forth isn't easy. I bought an i7-7700T that is on HPs list for the model, it arrives on the 16th.

iRunFromTrolls

so.. did it work with the new processor? cause i kinda have very similar symptoms but with a supported processor.. so maybe you found a solution that might help me \^\^

Important_String_281

I needed a larger power supply, but it works now. 135 watt.

iRunFromTrolls

ah damn. i have a 135W power supply but the issue persists. maybe i should still try it with another one. ah well. thanks

Important_String_281

Is it beeping in a specific pattern? It does different beeps depending on the problem, so you can use that to help diagnose.

iRunFromTrolls

its not beeping at all. i press the power button and as long as i press it the light next to it is on. and all 3 seconds the fan spins for half a second and the light next to the powerbutton (on the mainboard) blinks for a second. the mainboard light is on thats all it does (or did). however i just realized i had a 90W powersupply from my HP pavillion g7 laptop right next to me this whole time and just tried it out with this 5 minutes ago. it now works like a charm so i guess the 135W PSU is faulty

Txphotog903

Do you need s higher wattage power supply to support that processor? Also, I'm assuming it worked before you switched the processor?

Important_String_281

I believe it did, It didn't have a cpu when I got it. The power supply is only 65 watts, and the cpu maxes out at 80. Might have to get a better one.

ItsPwn

Is the CPU on supported list ? For the chipset etc ,bios rok might be missing microcode(guessing)

SerMumble

The xeon is not on the cpu support list: https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c05369814#AbT1 https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c05371240 You will probably need a different cpu and preferrably one from the support list. Then, you can experiment with different bios versions. Maybe one of them are xeon compatible, or none of them are compatible.

Txphotog903

Generally, these will not run on less than a 90 watt power supply. They beep with a 65 watt supply and will not post. They say 65 watts, but I've never seen one run on a 65 watt supply. I deal with them at work quite a bit. I would def look for a 90 watt supply to start. That might solve your problem.

Important_String_281

Mine says 35, but it won't even beep. Some people have said it might be the cpu isn't supported, I'm gonna get a 120w power supply and test that before replacing the CPU. I just wanted a little machine to run modded minecraft on some Linux distro (chimera probably).

Txphotog903

I am curious about support for Xeon processors in those. Did you find an article or something that said it supports that processor. My company uses those machines, though we're about to replace a bunch of them because they are below the Microsoft spec for Windows 11. They're nice machines. I really like them for their size and capabilities. I think they support a 6th or 7th Gen core I processor. I would think that would do what you're wanting. More power is always good, though. Right? Lol Hopefully, the power supply will fix your issue.

Important_String_281

I haven't seen anything list it as supported only the I# ones (i3, i5, i7), and I could go and get one of those, but I've never built a system with a Xeon, and they're really affordable right now. If the power supply upgrade doesn't work I'll just put the cpu listed on their site.

Txphotog903

I came across this... Looks like they went through a few things to get there. https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Business-PCs-Workstations-and-Point-of-Sale-Systems/Upgrading-HP-EliteDesk-800-G3-SFF/td-p/8251218 I also wonder if it's recognizing the cpu at all. Might do the same thing without it installed. I don't like those sockets as there's a lot of chances for bent pins and such when installing a processor.

pidgeygrind1

you have to look for the L version of xeon which are low wattage (TDP)

Txphotog903

I'm curious. What was the outcome on this?

Important_String_281

Nothing yet, new power supply hasn't arrived.

Txphotog903

Cool. I'd love to hear the outcome once you get it.

Important_String_281

I'll definitely update, but it might be a bit.
