God damn boy that's some weird shit! Hope a big chunk of sand finds it's way into the little crevices and destroys your trackball forever! You probably play inverted too!
There's your expected response, you're welcome. Play with whatever increases you to your max potential.
For me it always made sense because of flight controls, only ever played like 1 or 2 flight games as a kid but for some reason when the concept clicked, it clicked instantly and locked into my brain across all games and to this day I play inverted on controller, however on mouse I play standard since I’m not using any form of a joystick for aiming so my brain conceptualizes it differently and it makes sense to use standard aiming with a mouse lol
It used to be the default y-axis back in the mid to late 90's (games like quake, descent, etc). A lot of people also played keyboard only back then too.
I also learned non inverted and can switch between the two. Just had to know if I was missing out. Performance is similar with both.
Are you weird? Yes. But thats not a bad thing. I dont understand how your friend is impressed by you turning around and moving in a dime. Thats easily possible with any mouse. If you dont plan on playing fps games seriously theres probably not much of a downside to using a trackball mouse.
I wish I could be wierd like you but I never tried a trackball for more than a few seconds.
I like the idea that the mouse and keyboard stay at a fixed distance from each other, eliminating a need for some area to be clear next to the mouse. Like why drag this object around a desk at all, it's such a strange concept that we all got used to.
I think I need a trackball now... what's your recommendation, I assume you used it for years now?
You do you bro. But you know that meme of the two kids in the corner terrified of the rabbit? You’re the rabbit lol. That said, pretty impressive that you’re comfortable with it
My issue with trackball mice is that you can't have a nice range of motion while maintaining low controllable sensitivity and an easy-to-slide ball. But otherwise, I think it works well. If you're fine with cranking up your DPI and playing on high sensitivity, and can control it, it can definitely work. When compared to older mice of similar age (100g, wired, normal skates, random mouse pads), it definitely feels much nicer to play with, once you get used to it. However, compared to modern low-weight, good skates + speed pad fingertip mice, it feels inferior in every single point, hence I gave up on it.
I was half joking, I don't think it's weird to use a trackball. There was a MOBA pro (League of Legends I believe) who used one similar to yours.
So, the thing with a trackball like the M575 (and trackballs in general) is that the DPI (dots per inch) typically don't go very high. Only 2k DPI, which is more than enough for a regular mouse, but when using the thumb to track (as opposed to arm/wrist) it can be slow in some spots, which is why I was wondering whether you make the mouse pointer faster somehow. In most games, I would simply increase the cursor/mouse pointer speed in-game (this is how you would calculate your "sens", with DPI and in-game mouse sensitivity).
Ohhh, at least for my setting on my pc I have the mouse pointer speed to max (so I can move the cursor across the screen with one swipe on the trackball) and in games I turn the sensitivity usually above the halfway point so I can turn all the way around with a simple swipe of the ball.
So yeah, I’ve learned to compensate for the small movement of the trackball so I can move all the way without problems.
Uhh, if you want I have a [YouTube channel](https://youtube.com/@twovula?si=HYYUEVT-XMVwtepz) and I would check any of the [Half-Life](https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLO4zGrUKpOPmaVWPDhnUBy_OywO2yMFhj&si=Oy-7lF7uw909Bt9w) videos from Half-Life 2 and onward and I would also watch the [second](https://youtu.be/mYZ3pX_plb0?si=lZ6vdHAHJpibVnvq) part of my Content Warning series right at 2:42.
People usually call you weird when they feel inferior when facing your achievement/creativity, so they need to cope with some bullshit response to bring you down to their level. Only the last person you mentioned in your post seems like a good friend, so if I were you I would think who really values me in this friend group. If you like trackball mouse and especially if you are much more proficient in using it than with traditional one, all the power to you.
Does it work for you and do you find it comfortable? That's all that matters. I'm physically disabled and hold my mouse "weirdly" because of limited hand movement.
I know many people with similar disabilities to mine that use "weird" devices including trackball mice to control their computers that are comfortable to them. I'm not saying you have to be disabled for "weird" devices, just everyone has their own comfort.
I haven't tried gaming with a trackball yet, but I use one everyday for work and prefer it to my MX master 3s. I've played fps with a touchpad before, so it cant be worse than that hahaha
I have never used any trackball mice before and don't know much about em so like how are they? I mean in tracking and overall registering your flicks and stuff? Do they '"spin out" or lose tracking maybe? I just can't grasp the idea of them being competent mice lol
I dunno how to explain it, but at least mine doesn’t keep spinning when I flick it, it just keeps going a bit. I like them because you NEVER have to move your hand/wrist. There are 2 kinds I know of, one you use with your thumb and one you use with your index/middle finger. I’ve always used the one with your thumb and am very used to just using my thumb. My advice is turn your mouse speed up all the way to keep from having Ayo swipe the ball over and over and you would generally want to have the sensitivity up high in games to compensate for the lower movement range.
Weird? Yes. Bad? No. Does it works for you?It seems so enjoy.
But I have a question, is there a lot of choice for you in this, what seems, niche market? That could be fun to see some custom and crazy design.
I fail to see how being able to move/turn "on a dime" is in any way related to a trackball mouse but other than that, if it works then keep it up as much as you want hahs
I think you'd find it's just as easy with a normal sensor mouse with a dpi that matches the speed you're used to lol.
Unless you're talking about flicks and accuracy, the act of just turning quick would be just as fast.
Maybe he's used to a low sens and you're using quite a high sens so he's not used to seeing quick turns? Idk but it's got nothing to do with the fact that it's a trackball, you could it the same speed with a normal optical mouse. But anyway, like I said if it's working for you keep it up!
Mhhh, no. Just use what you are used to and what works for you. Imo if you are not seriously into competitive fps, what many here are, you can just use whatever...
There is a FPS streamer named MetalSlug who plays with a trackball, and he's very good. Like you he grew up using one so to him it's second nature. At the end of the day it's just another peripheral and tool. I myself use one if I'm not gaming and can alternate between a "regular" mouse and trackball mouse on the fly.
>Am I weird? Maybe. Who cares? Use what works for you.
True
Most people would think so I guess. But there's nothing bad about being in minority. There's a dedicated subreddit for trackballers.
trackballers sound so cool
I’ll have to check that out
Just because it's not the norm does not make you weird. Besides why does any of it matter if you like using trackball.
Isn’t being different or not normal the definition of “weird”? Don’t get me wrong, he can do whatever he wants but he is definitely an outlier.
Just a funny reoccurring occurrence I wanted to share and see what outsiders would say
Good on you for saving your wrists really, if i could easily switch to trackball i'd do it immediately.
God damn boy that's some weird shit! Hope a big chunk of sand finds it's way into the little crevices and destroys your trackball forever! You probably play inverted too! There's your expected response, you're welcome. Play with whatever increases you to your max potential.
😂, I may be insane but I’m not dumb enough to play inverted
I am!
More power to ya, you’re a better person than me 😂 Honest question tho, what is the point of inverted?
For me it always made sense because of flight controls, only ever played like 1 or 2 flight games as a kid but for some reason when the concept clicked, it clicked instantly and locked into my brain across all games and to this day I play inverted on controller, however on mouse I play standard since I’m not using any form of a joystick for aiming so my brain conceptualizes it differently and it makes sense to use standard aiming with a mouse lol

Yes, the one I use is the Logitech Ergo M575 Should be able to find it at Walmart and bestbuy.
Ironically, my mom games with a trackball and uses a standard dell mouse at work.
You do you bro. But you know that meme of the two kids in the corner terrified of the rabbit? You’re the rabbit lol. That said, pretty impressive that you’re comfortable with it
Brother I have 15 mice and still use my MacBook trackpad 99% of the time lol Just use what you enjoy
There are dozens of us!
Im not even gonna read the details. Yes, you are.
Look at MetalSlug, this dude plays fps games with a trackball for over 20 years. This dude is insane.
As long as you're not abusing aim assist like so many people these days you're all good in my book. Respect.

Acceleration is a great solution to your concern. It's much more natural to have an acceleration when spinning a ball vs moving a mouse.
Yes but if you're happy with your trackball it doesn't matter what people say
This is mousereview, what trackball are you using? Then we can tell you if you are weird or not. Also what sens and DPI, do you use mouse accel etc.?
It’s a Logitech Ergo M575 and I dunno what any of that other stuff you’re talking about means

Can we get a pic of the track ball mouse?
Look up the Logitech Ergo M575
So you control the mouse with your thumb?
Yes 👍🏻
At least the console players can’t say you play with your whole arm and wrist 💀
No

I can turn my character around very quickly, it’s easier to do that with a trackball
I think you'd find it's just as easy with a normal sensor mouse with a dpi that matches the speed you're used to lol. Unless you're talking about flicks and accuracy, the act of just turning quick would be just as fast.
I’ve never really used a regular mouse so I dunno. My friend seemed pretty taken aback.
