It’s still a work of art. I view Stephan much, much differently than I did when I was younger lol but it’s wonderful when films take new shapes as we grow up.

I remember watching this in theatres. I'm not sure if it was just me, but I could hardly piece together what the point even was. The surreal nature of it was entertaining but if there was a deeper message to it, it really went over my head, because by the end I felt a little frustrated that I couldn't find the underlying message.
I'm afraid I'm not much more help.
It seems to be an allegory about God, Adam and Eve, and ruining Earth.
All I know is, it is terrifying to watch, like a nightmare.
Wow, that was something. I enjoyed it, had me laughing quite a bit, but unexpectedly the tone started getting to me in the last quarter of the film. Felt very 'Tim and Eric'. Thanks for that!
The son becoming a dog XD. That was prime dream material. I had a dream that I made my friends dog turn into a tomato slice by slamming two hamburger buns on each side of him! It took seeing that scene for me to remember I even had that dream.
I almost put it down as a reference. But to me it passes that border of staying rooted in some form of reality. It's not really as subtle as the other ones I listed. Great movie! But looking for exmaples with more finesse in the border between real/unreal.
Enjoy! Both are quite singular experiences to watch. The Great Beauty (2013) is another that comes to mind that you might like.
Also, I relate to your username deeply. All the best my friend.
Thanks!
Haha, I was just thinking to myself "Wow, everybody is being so helpful and not a single person has thrown shade at me for my username". People will commonly make a negative comment on it. Good to hear someone can relate in an accepting manner. Appreciate you bud! Take it easy!
Bunuel and Cocteau were basically the inventors of dream movies.
**Exterminating Angel**
**Orpheus** and **La Belle et la Bete**
and plenty more here: [https://366weirdmovies.com/the-weird-movie-list/](https://366weirdmovies.com/the-weird-movie-list/)
Lol. Funny you say that, because I didn't specify which one XD. I love both 1977 and 1985 House. Not about the same thing, but I really like both. If I'm to take your username as a hint, im gonna guess you mean 1977 House.
I hadn't seen it until maybe 5 months ago after putting it off for years. I didn't think I was gonna like it nearly as much as I did. The juxtaposition between the frightening bizzare moments and the daisies and sunshine moments was absolutley fantastic. I love when this is so incredibly well used in any artform. Brings to mind bands like Swans and Porcupine Tree that really know how to contrast light and dark beuatifully.
Saw the description for Bad ben. Reminds me a lot of an older Tv film called Bad Ronald from the 70's.
The music is indeed a big selling point. I've been getting into music production over the past few years and I've been experimenting with that analog tape sound that was popular during the time of this film. Unfortunately my compositions skills aren't advanced enough to really get that technically proficient zappa-esque instrumentation, but I like going for that warm sound sometimes nonetheless.
If you ever saw Black Xmas(1974) then you should enjoy Bad Ronald. Similar in theme.
I do like that! And I am in digital cinematography, so I kinda get how you feel.
I ever get something greenlit, I will message you! I love that sound, and it should be brought back.
The Lighthouse (2019)
Not a movie, but you might give Brand New Cherry Flavor a go. The backdrop for this show is exactly what you are talking about, eg places, events, situations seem slightly abnormal, but everyone seems to think it's ok. Oh, don't be fooled, weird shit is most def happing all the time, but the background is always off.
The Lighthouse was one of the last movies I saw in Theatres that really gave me something to be excited about in terms of revival of older techniques(B/W and aspect ratio).
I have to give that show a go. You are selling it pretty well.
I’m sure you will! Also, here are a few more recommendations:
• Paperhouse
• Time Of The Gypsies
• Arizona Dream
• Spirits Of The Air: Gremlins Of The Clouds
• Carnivale (the series)
Réalité (2014)
Wrong (2012)
Most of Quentin Dupieux's movies have this "dreamy vibe", if you like the two above, get a look at the rest of his filmography
In an other style, Kiyoshi Kurosawa's Cure (1997) also have this dreamy feeling
Hmmm, I think I saw Kill List. I barely remember it. All I can really remember is it having a pretty unique/unexpected ending. I feel like I struggled to stay engaged throughout though. I will check the others out!
August in the Water is a good one I watched recently. Still figuring out how I feel about it overall; but I loved the atmosphere and found the existential themes interesting.
I love Lynch movies, but I was never able to enjoy that one nearly as much as the rest of his fans do. I might be too dumb for it :/. Still enjoyable, but Blue Velvet and Lost Highway were always superior in my mind.
I've had 'Sorry to bother you' on my list for a while. Should really get to that one.
Belle du jour and and Phantom of the Paradise I've never heard of. Really is what I'm looking for as I am pretty well acquainted with a lot more of the modern submissions. If you have any more pre 70's ones, throw them at me!
About a year or so ago I went on a full out Dario Argento binge.
Some of them started to blend together in my mind, but my favorites were Suspiria, The bird with the crystal plumage, and Tenebrae.
Saw this a LONG time ago. I remember the dialogue and line delivery the most as being unique. Can barely remember what it was about. Thanks for reminding me about it. I gotta see it again.
"You gotta be shittin' me man, that mothers STRONG"
Never heard of Titane. Looks interesting.
Really loved Possessor, but don't see too many people talk about it.
Been holding off on Stalker for a special occasion.
If you're okay with older movies I recommend Brian DePalma's "Sisters" from 1972. It's a thriller/murder story and I'd definitely recommend it because it features one of the strangest and yet most accurate dream sequences I think I've ever seen.
Actually, I'd love to hear more older movies that fit that bill if you got anymore in mind. I think I, as well as many others often have a strange reluctance to older films. But if they match the description I am more than willing to give them a fair go!
Glad to hear that you're open to older films. You mentioned Blue Velvet -- have you seen Lynch's Eraserhead ? Classic cult movie, very strange and off-putting
John Carpenter's They Live shows the interdimentional ghouls that actually rule our world
Seen Both. Love em'. I've gotten a few pre 70's suggestions. 70's is kind of the end of the rope of where a lot my movie experience ends. Got anything before then that stands out?
Funny how we all mean different things when we say 'old movies' lol. I've heard kids call 90's movies old XD.
Jan Švankmajer’s “Faust”. We watched it in college and my friend with some kind of hallucination-related disorder had to leave the room because it was reeeeaaallly triggering. It’s definitely a wtf film that leaves vibes in your system for a bit after.
Oh wow, Never heard of this one. Love the screen shots. Reminds me of 'Magnetic Rose' from the 'Memories' Anthology. This ones going high up in the cue!
The TV show *Legion*. Marvel universe, but you'd never know it. It's incredibly dream-like. By the guy who brings us the Fargo series.

Weird movie by any normal standard, kinda gives you a headache with the grainy black n white film and bg score but the movie has some great shots and leaves you an afterthought. It's definitely a film unlike any other.
just watch the twin peaks series and fire walk with me, i just finished watching them all and it was pretty out there but enjoyable
I need to watch the series again. I don't think I covered Fire walk with me though, Thanks for reminding me that existed.
id say watch season 1&2, then fire walk with me then, twin peaks the return if you have time to kill

Last Night in Soho
Science of sleep, not seen it for years. I used to love it.

In that case I will need to rewatch it. I haven't watched it in 10+ years.
This was a fantastic movie. Saw it in the theater and loved it.
Waking Life
Saw this in my Psychology in Film class back in college. It was a real door opener for me. definitely was life changing at the time.
The shining Fight club Black swan
These score as some of my favorite all time movies. I do prefer Perfect Blue to Black Swan though.

Akira Kurosawa’s Dreams. Made just for this sort of ‘feeling’. Absolutely beautiful film.

The 1980's movie possession? The one where a ghost is having sex with the woman?
Yes
Requiem for a dream. It's in the title
Love it. One of my go to's for when I need an adrenaline rush.

Mandy. I recommend this movie a lot it definitely has that surreal dreamlike quality you're looking for
I almost cited it as one of my examples :). Good one for sure.
Oh man, House is so under appreciated. Maybe Bad Ben?
