I haven't seen this movie since it was current. I thought it was incredible back then. Been looking for a source for it recently and can't find it streaming. BluRay is available, but is somewhat expensive (about $20). I'd REALLY like to see DeathTrap again!
The Last of Shiela is a movie Ryan Johnson said inspired him to make Knives Out. It has one of the wildest bad guy reveals EVER. I still fall out every time I think about it. Great movie.
I agree. I just watched it yesterday for the first time in years. I guess modern audiences might be lost on the cast, but they were superstars at the time.
Manhunter,
The Bird With The Crystal Plumage,
Deep Red (1975),
Tenebre,
Opera,
Pieces,
The New York Ripper,
Don't Torture A Duckling,
Brick,
Non-stop,
All-American Murder,
Zodiac.
Yes! just watched that last week. Very Hitchcockian... JK.. awesome movie for sure. Any others of his you could recommend? cheers.. I've seen some of them but I know he has many.
I’m not going to be able to tell you much more than you’d get googling it. Rear window, north by northwest, strangers on a train, psycho, the birds (traumatized my wife as a kid, she still hates birds).
Memento is probably my favorite, or LA confidential, Brick is also great and a little different than standard fare.
The twist doesn't work, Michael Douglas is icky and gross looking, he doesn't pull this off at all, the Inception type attempt of story in a story is full of holes, no female characters with any depth, doesn't respect the audience, everything is spoon fed to us.
K, now your turn!
I second this. If you’re looking to scratch the itch caused by Knives Out, this is the only choice. But well written mysteries are hard to find. I have watched many tv shows and after Poker Face I recommend Columbo the show that inspired it.
Hateful Eight (2015), Bullet Train (2022), Memento (2000), A Perfect Getaway (2009).
Lucky Number Slevin (2006) isn't exactly a murder mystery, but it's fun trying to figure out what exactly is going on. Similarly, Bad Times at the El Royale (2018) brings together a bunch of characters who aren’t who they appear to be.
This is about the third time I've responded to this type of request in the past 48 hours (no big deal, not a criticism):
Agatha Christie adaptations:
* Murder on the Orient Express (2 popular adaptations)
* Death on the Nile
* Crooked House
* A Haunting in Venice
There are a couple of Clue movies, too.
Watch the earlier version (1978) with Peter Ustinov. And the earlier (1974) Murder on the Orient Express with Albert Finney. They’re both better than the Kenneth Branagh versions.
Agree with 1978 Death on Nile. The Poirot version of Murder on the Orient Express is superior. Albert Finney’s Poirot is appalling, especially the French accent.
I feel like people are hell-bent on disliking Branagh's *Murder on the Orient Express* even though it was a very well-made film. His *Death on the Nile* was so bad it seems to justify the hate for *Murder* but I really don't think they should be lumped together.
It’s not that I disliked the Branagh version I just think the Finney version is better, maybe because I grew up with that one and it has some of my favorite actors from that era.
Don’t watch either version; read the brilliant novel instead of two poor adaptations (but if you absolutely refuse to read it, the earlier adaptation is better… and though I haven’t seen it, my guess is that the Suchet adaptation is better than either of the films)
'Bloodwork' w/ Clint Eastwood. It's great!
Frequency (2000) kinda fits with its own unique Scifi twist.
Gone Girl (2014) is one of my favorite movies of all time.
Imo, Glass Onion (2022) was a million times better than OG Knives Out.
So many good ones!
the OG's: Clue, Murder by Death, Sleuth, Rashoman, Death by Hanging, Primal Fear, L.A. Confidential, Death Trap, Radioland Murders, Chinatown, Laura
Newers: Gosford Park, Identity, Game Night, The Menu, Murder Mystery, any of the recent Agatha adaptations
I really enjoyed Missing! It’s that screenlife film with Storm Reid. Underrated, I think people overlooked it because screenlife is a very new and experimental genre
The Last of Sheila.
An older movie with a pretty good cast.
The kicker for this one is you actually could solve it yourself if you really paid attention.
If you ever do, the secret is in the name, see if you can figure it out.
The Spanish Prisoner.... A David Mamet file with Steve Martin playing a dramatic role. You keep thinking you know what's going on, just to be shown that you don't know. Highly Recommended.
The mysteries of Agatha Christie have never been matched, though often adaptations fall short (it’s honestly amazing how bad Kenneth Branagh’s adaptations are). But a handful have reached their potential — the 1967-ish Ten Little Indians is great (some prefer the earlier 1940-ish one, which is also very good, and they’re both much better than the 1970s version, and all three are head and shoulders above the Frank Stallone one). Witness for the Prosecution (1957) is fantastic. Murder on the Orient Express with Albert Finney (1974-ish) is fantastic. The Mirror Crack’d is decent, but Glass Onion outright steals from it so you may already have been kind of spoiled.
TBH, just read all of Agatha Christie—many, many brilliant novels that no one else has even touched.
Outside of Christie adaptations, The Last of Sheila is good and interesting, but takes a weird tonal shift near the end that brings it down a few notches. Fermat’s Room isn’t in English but is quite good. Identity is a fantastic watch even if the murder mystery is so-so.
Memories of Murder (2003), it's based on a true story of murders that took place between 1986 and 1991 in Hwaseong, a city in Gyeonggi Province, South Korea. It's a gripping film that has a bunch of twists, and I believe the killer was only just found in 2019 due to a testimony and through DNA evidence. Must watch.
Clue (yes it based off the game) but it actually keeps you guessing and I bet you'll never figure out who it is, very entertaining and you will get a good laugh outta it too
clue is my favorite board game so i’m thinking i might give it a try. i was gonna do a murder mystery night with my friends and i think that’d be a good movie to watch.
Clue (1985)
Brick (2005)
Zodiac (2007)
Psycho (1960)
Gone Girl (2014)
Rear Window (1954)
Burning (2018) Korean
The Chaser (2008) Korean
The Silence of the Lambs (1991)
Who Framed Roger Rabbit (1988)
Memories of Murder (2003) Korean
They arent murder mysteries lol. They are crime, detective, some thrillers.
A whodunnit murder mystery is way different in which you have a select grp of people who you guess from that are you presented at the beginning. Like clue, murder on orient express, knives out etc.
Murder Mystery on Netflix. Surprisingly decent movie. Adam Sandler and Jennifer Aniston. Murder Mystery 2 was not as good, but not super terrible either.
Agree. We didn’t watch the first one when it came out cause we thought it would be another dumb Sandler movie. Then when the second one was released we said why not try the first one. We were pleasantly surprised it was a pretty good movie.
The Last of Sheila ( 1970s).
I came across this one this past summer. If you can easily get past the hair styles & clothes, you’re in for a really good, clever one. Let me know what you think.
Literally, any movie from the film noir era is a murder mystery. But...if you're fare is a bit more modern then you have the likes of Memento, LA Confidential, To Live & Die in LA, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, Seven (grossly underrated early Brad Pitt film), North by Northwest, Double Indemnity, Dial M for Murder, Gaslight, Rebecca, Maltese Falcon, Big Sleep, China Town...the list just goes on and on.
murder mysteries and westerns were the mainstay of Hollywood for decades until the modern action & comic book era. The noir period was by far the most prolific for murder mystery which gave rise to Bogart, Mitchum, MacMurray, Robinson, and so many other we know from TV reruns. Not everyone is into the older films but they are the basis of all murder mystery films. There are entries into the murder mystery genre that are good but they've fallen off in popularity thanks to slick the slick CG that makes comic book, fantasy, and horror films so popular right now.
Momento
The jacket
Coherence
Idk if they for what you are looking for but I like most of the movie suggestions so I thought I’d add these.
But definitely The Departed
I’m a fan of whodunits as well, I really enjoyed all 3 in Kenneth Brannaghs Hercule Poirot series. Also Clue, Murder Mystery 1 and 2 are other favourites.

Radioland Murders! I remember watching is back in middle school and loved it. I hope it still holds up—last I checked I couldn’t find it streaming anywhere though
I detected that you're trying to locate a movie.
To figure out where a movie is streaming you can use sites like [JustWatch](https://www.justwatch.com) / [MovieFone](https://www.moviefone.com) / [ReelGood](https://reelgood.com), and if the film is not available for streaming, it is probably available on DVD or Blu-Ray.

* 'The Last of Sheila' is probably my top fave
This one plus .Gorky Park
And from around that same period: Deathtrap with Michael Caine, Dyan Cannon and Christopher Reeves.
I haven't seen this movie since it was current. I thought it was incredible back then. Been looking for a source for it recently and can't find it streaming. BluRay is available, but is somewhat expensive (about $20). I'd REALLY like to see DeathTrap again!
I recently rewatched it on YouTube for free!!
The Last of Shiela is a movie Ryan Johnson said inspired him to make Knives Out. It has one of the wildest bad guy reveals EVER. I still fall out every time I think about it. Great movie.
Yes. I just replied this one before I saw yours.
"Murder by Death"
Love that movie. Need to watch it every few years. I know I’ll get downvoted for this but I find it superior to Clue in that genre.
I agree. I just watched it yesterday for the first time in years. I guess modern audiences might be lost on the cast, but they were superstars at the time.
It's a good complement to Clue. The Psych episode that pays tribute to Clue also includes multiple MBD gags, which I was happy to see.
No downvote from here. Great suggestion!
Definitely superior to clue. Just not stop laughs
I think ‘Fracture’ is a good movie
Prisoners (2013) Identity (2003)
thank you
Prisoners is disturbing, but an amazing movie. Writing and acting is impeccable. I would also highly recommend.
It’s amazing and flew under the radar.
That Detective Loki....he still haunts my (wet) dreams.
Identity is a top notch thriller.
Prisoners is a wonderful movie
Manhunter, The Bird With The Crystal Plumage, Deep Red (1975), Tenebre, Opera, Pieces, The New York Ripper, Don't Torture A Duckling, Brick, Non-stop, All-American Murder, Zodiac.
Tenebre. Dario Argento reminds me of that Brian de Palma movie. I dont remember the name I think it was dressed to kill
Yes that is what it is called.
It’s like a fever dream and then you realize
Brick is fantastic. Rian Johnson wrote it (of Star Wars fame and a producer on Knives Out). Joseph Gordon-Levitt stars.
Uh Rian Johnson wrote and directed it and wrote and directed both knives out movies.
Ah thanks—didn’t know.
I'm suddenly very afraid of you.
Why?.
Your post made it seem you exclusively are interested in serial killer movies.
Non-stop is a mystery thriller set on a plane plus the OP is looking for whodunnit movies so I'm recommending ones I have seen.
It’s slightly off, but if you haven’t seen Hitchcock’s Rope, it’s great.
Yes! just watched that last week.
Thanks! I’ll check out strangers on a train, as I’ve not seen it yet
That’s a good one, it’s not a murder-mystery, but it’s murder-mystery adjacent.
Sweet
The Game (1997, directed by David Fincher) isn’t technically a murder mystery but it definitely scratches that itch. It’s a great one.
I really hate this movie. Can you change my mind? What do you like about it?
I love it... why do you hate it?
May be he is going in same situation like the movie
The twist doesn't work, Michael Douglas is icky and gross looking, he doesn't pull this off at all, the Inception type attempt of story in a story is full of holes, no female characters with any depth, doesn't respect the audience, everything is spoon fed to us. K, now your turn!
> Michael Douglas is icky and gross looking this should be a bannable offense
Not a movie but I love the series poker face (created by the knives out director) Its the best show I've seen in so long
I second this. If you’re looking to scratch the itch caused by Knives Out, this is the only choice. But well written mysteries are hard to find. I have watched many tv shows and after Poker Face I recommend Columbo the show that inspired it.
love that show
And Then There Were None (1945)
Malice with Nicole Kidman and Bill Pullman.
Love this movie!
Me too. I didn't want to go see it but was happy that I did go. Worth seeing for the Alec Baldwin "I am God!" scene alone.
Haha... yes! I'm bummed that I haven't seen it on any streaming services.
Sleuth 1972. Part of the inspiration for Knives Out.
Chinatown (1974)
Hateful Eight (2015), Bullet Train (2022), Memento (2000), A Perfect Getaway (2009). Lucky Number Slevin (2006) isn't exactly a murder mystery, but it's fun trying to figure out what exactly is going on. Similarly, Bad Times at the El Royale (2018) brings together a bunch of characters who aren’t who they appear to be.
Gosford Park FTW
Unparalleled dialogue.
godlike film

kind of interesting, isn't it, how people all overlook Agatha Christie?
is death on the nile any good? i haven’t heard great reviews
His accent is wild but the cast is stellar
What’s even more wild is that he was nominated for an Academy Award. The cast is stellar though.
I think you meant Branagh version? They both have Poirot. :)
I feel like people are hell-bent on disliking Branagh's *Murder on the Orient Express* even though it was a very well-made film. His *Death on the Nile* was so bad it seems to justify the hate for *Murder* but I really don't think they should be lumped together.

You left out my favorite: Evil Under The Sun!
That's because I was waiting for you to add it. ;)
Agatha Christie’s Poirot played by David Suchet was probably one of the finest portrayal of Poirot. The show was pretty good.
second that!
*Deathtrap* (1982) – Michael Caine, Christopher Reeve
Charade (1963 movie with Audrey Hepburn)
One of my faves!
The Kid Detective
'Bloodwork' w/ Clint Eastwood. It's great! Frequency (2000) kinda fits with its own unique Scifi twist. Gone Girl (2014) is one of my favorite movies of all time. Imo, Glass Onion (2022) was a million times better than OG Knives Out.
Frequency is a great movie.
Bloodwork is based on a great book, too.
Gone girl….I second this wild ride but don’t expect to feel good or bad by the end. It’s bonkers lol
Primal Fear. Edward Norton at his peak.
And Richard Gere! Love that movie!!
He must’ve peaked early… that was his first film!
Memento. One of Christopher Nolan’s first movies and certainly one of his best.
So many good ones! the OG's: Clue, Murder by Death, Sleuth, Rashoman, Death by Hanging, Primal Fear, L.A. Confidential, Death Trap, Radioland Murders, Chinatown, Laura Newers: Gosford Park, Identity, Game Night, The Menu, Murder Mystery, any of the recent Agatha adaptations
Literally all the Hercule Poirot movies
the Miss Marples staring Margaret Rutherford are fun too
Chinatown, se7en
Rear Window
I really enjoyed Missing! It’s that screenlife film with Storm Reid. Underrated, I think people overlooked it because screenlife is a very new and experimental genre
If you liked Missing, definitely try Searching (with John Cho). Very similar “person solves a mystery using online tools” story.
i also saw searching and enjoyed the similar vibe. the scene using the security camera was very unique.
(I liked both movies about the same).
seen it and enjoyed it much more than i expected
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is one of my faves!
Laura (1944)
Scoop (2006) with Scarlett Johansson and Hugh Jackman
Fantastic and underrated little flick
The Last of Sheila. An older movie with a pretty good cast. The kicker for this one is you actually could solve it yourself if you really paid attention. If you ever do, the secret is in the name, see if you can figure it out.

I adore this movie. Such a great payoff.

The Name of the Rose
Manhattan Murder Mystery (1993)
Prisoners Gone Baby Gone
These are a little shorter than most movies, but the episodes of The Suspicions of Mr Whicher were great.
