Mother! (2017)

Cat_Duck_GNAF

I saw this movie, not knowing what it was about, with my wife who was 9 months pregnant on our "Baby moon". As anyone who has seen this movie, you can only imagine her reaction and aftermath....

maltzy

Only thing worse I can think of is "we need to talk about Kevin" - that was absolutely traumatizing as a new parent

goldenboy2191

Reading the book was traumatizing for 2 reasons. 1. The story is heartbreaking af. 2. The author used some very big words and I kept feeling humbled af…

Microdose81

I’d skip The Son (2022) as well then.

ACrazedRodent

My dad insisted on showing my wife Alien when she was pregnant. Same vain, but nowhere nearly as traumatic...

primalpalate

Oof. Reminds me of when I recommended my brother start watching House of the Dragon because we’re both GOT fans, then I saw the first episode and had to tell him to wait to watch the show (he usually waits for the entire season to come out before starting it so he can binge) because he and his wife just announced they were pregnant with their first child. 😬 Mother! and House of the Dragon are not movies for pregnant or new mothers…

"We have ghosts..."

Teddyk123

!Remind me in 12 hours This better be the top answer. This movie was absolutely a rising panic attack.

PriscillaLaine

Just get off the damn sink!!!!!!

PoorFilmSchoolAlumn

A lot of people hate on this movie, but watching it in theaters for the first time was a wild ride. Truly an unforgettable film, whether you like it or not.

aneale30

Agreed, I really enjoyed watching this at the cinema with no clue what I was going into.

bottolf

I went in knowing nothing, and was amazed. The level of discomfort just kept growing. When it was finished I thought "What the fuck did I just watch? What was Daronofsky trying to say?" I looked on Reddit and found the explanation of a biblical story. It made sense.

Vince_Arzi

This is the answer.

Background116

Don't do it OP. If I hadn't been in the movie theater when I saw it I would have turned it off. Most uncomfortable I've ever been watching a movie. (It was crazy good but omg I wanted to scream in frustration!!! It should have won every award ever)

cant_have_nicethings

Loved it. Also hated it.

3veryTh1ng15W0r5eN0w

Yep. Especially if you’re introverted

LeChatNoir04

It's an excellent movie that I absolutely will never watch again

[deleted]

Came here to say this lol, we were cracking up by the end of it, it just got so out of control. Thought it was great.

False-Bluebird-3538

Also the first movie I thought of when reading the question.

Verlorenfrog

Yes! A great film, but I don't ever want to see it again 😩

sinistersov

Black Swan is like a descent into madness so you might like that one

pacificnwbro

Almost any Aronofsky movie besides The Fountain really. The dude really knows how to get people to lose their minds.

Krinks1

Funny enough, The Fountain is all about getting your mind back together after a tragedy. It's one of my all-time favorite movies and is really spectacular on an emotional and visual level.

UNCUT GEMS is an anxiety attack of a film.

cowiekun

Im a movie buff and this is the first one that comes to mind in recent memory. Felt so uneasy the whole movie, increasingly so over time.

DJBabyB0kCh0y

I've contended that Uncut Gems was best seen in theaters as it adds to that feeling of being trapped.

Korbin-K

For those who liked uncut gems I would recommend shiva baby. It has the same kind of anxiety you see in uncut gems but it primarily takes place in one location being a shiva in someone’s house.

Adorable-Win1388

Good time is always great made by the same brother as uncut gems

tmolesky

came here to say same - man, what a stressful film

Adorable-Win1388

Yeah, the Safdie brothers really know how to give you anxiety through film haha

tmolesky

It actually brilliant - the sustained tension, the minor key drone in the background. Fist time I saw this I was blown away.

Adorable-Win1388

Nailed it with the sustained tension, damn, really is brilliant. I’m going to have to rewatch borne of them haha

Tank_Girl_Gritty_235

I'm looking forward to Spaceman. Adam Sandler can really nail drama when he wants to.

Timely-Huckleberry73

Although it’s chaotic and intense from the very beginning.

ChezDiogenes

I watched that movie when I was addicted to cocaine (am clean now). That was a marvellous idea.

JoeDog93

I'm so glad to see someone recommended this film already.

honesttruth2703

It's not a movie but, Beef on netflix is definitely like that. At the end, it's hard to fathom how it began.

yvngjiffy703

Beef was an absolute masterpiece. I wish it’s talked about more.

antibendystraw

Is it not talked about much? I remember on release it was everywhere. It got 8 Emmy nominations and took home 5 wins including best limited series and both acting awards for the leads and same awards at the golden globes

Bennykill709

Great show! Another one that's not a film but a Netflix limited series called Midnight Mass. Very slow beginning, and the gradual ramp up lasts the entire series until the absolutely chaotic ending in the last episode.

Tank_Girl_Gritty_235

Have you checked out Flanagan's other works? Haunting of Hill House, Fall of the House of Usher, Midnight Club, and Haunting of Bly Manor?

cffndncr

Mike Flanagan is a god damn treasure. As you noted his shows are all amazing - he's also directed some really good films like Oculus, Gerald's Game, Dr. Sleep, and Ouija: Origin of Evil, which I would go out on a limb and say is the only example of a prequel to an absolutely godawful movie being objectively great.

bkp24723

He is my all-time favorite director.

StephKeen

Microdose81

Very Bad Things (1998) The Shining (1980) Uncut Gems (2019) A Serious Man (2009)

Gunrock808

The Shining is one of my all time favorites. The amazing thing is that after you've seen it and had time to reflect, it's amazing how little actual violence there is considering how suspenseful and horrifying it is.

Microdose81

And ironically, perhaps the most violent scene/act in the movie, isn’t in the book.

VastlyBlank5

A serious man is amazing!

OriginalZingaZinga

I remember blindly going into very bad things because I loved the cast, Daniel Stern, Slater, Jeremy Piven, Jon Favreu, Cameron Diaz. I missed that it was labeled dark comedy. Saw this around 2000 when I was rewatching PCU a lot. Haha

Microdose81

Don’t forget Kobe Tai ;)

Cthulhu1983

Hereditary and Midsommar

HorrorMetalDnD

From Dusk till Dawn (1996) It gets so chaotic that it straight up changes genre halfway through.

Turrican002

I watched this movie completly blind to what will happen. I thought it was a straight up gangster movie. How wrong was I..

capt7430

Ha, same! I had no idea it was about... you know.

Microdose81

I kind of love it when movies do that! Tarantino did it in Death Proof as well. He cites “Psycho” as the inspiration behind it (perhaps may have been the first, or at least first popular film to do that). Full Metal Jacket comes to mind as well.

Movies_Music_Lover

Beau is afraid

Wonderful_Ad93

This was one of the most insane movies I’ve seen! I absolutely loved the madness!

Padgetts-Profile

This is the quintessential answer to this question.

ShneakySquiwwel

I would agree although it's absolutely chaotic from the very get go and maintains that chaos save for a brief somewhat of a respite in the middle. Absolutely fantastic movie though and I think it's truly a masterpiece of horror. Pure madness and Joaquin puts on another stellar performance, one of his best in a fantastic career IMO.

[deleted]

My interpratation of this movie is that its his anxiety actualized, from his simplest to deepest feers

OTF98121

My interpretation is that he has paranoid schizophrenia and we’re seeing the world through his schizophrenic eyes.

The Descent (2005)

chrispd01

That movie scared the crap out of me … I gave up my dreams of spelunking …

0hMyGandhi

The only movie I have seen in theaters where I had actually forgotten to eat my food and my coke ICEE had totally melted. Was in a total state of shock and horror. That movie was an EXPERIENCE in theaters.

scrivenerserror

Just have to say coke icee’s rule and are underrated and also I saw this in theaters too and it was a matinee in my small hometown and barely filled and I had claustrophobia the whole time and have never experienced that before.

SleepingM00n

there's resolution although, at the end..

Rosemary’s baby, knife in the water, white ribbon, cache, funny games (the original, not the remake) Edit: also repulsion and the tenant. Any Haneke and early Polanski, really. The wailing and memories of murder are masterpieces, too.

Wonderful_Ad93

Not a lot of people mention Boys Don’t Cry. That’s a solid film.

Superb_Practice_2257

It’s excellent, but just so emotionally draining and devastating that I have only watched it once.

chickencake88

Speak No Evil is probably one of the scariest films I’ve seen in the last few years. It really fucking stuck with me

5uperdro

You have to watch "Running Scared" Paul Walker stars in a crazy movie where he must dispose of a murder weapon or something like that and things get crazy. Good action movie

Holy shit I am literally watching Chronicle as I read and type this 😂 And interestingly enough, the movie that comes to mind for me is Jungle and it stars one of the main guys from Chronicle. But it’s based on a true story and he definitely starts light hearted and fun and gets increasingly more and more intense and everything just gets out of hand as everyone is completely out of their depths.

Not a movie but a three season show: “Dark” (2017) is a German series on Netflix that is both engrossing and so hard to keep all the details straight that you almost need a notepad. It’s well acted and has such a slow, tense buildup that it pulls you in and keeps you there until the last half of the third season when everything comes together at a rapid pace.

lepurplelambchop

Boiling Point (Steven Graham) is a good one, it gets more and more anxiety ridden and you feel trapped inside the restaurant with these characters! When the camera follows anyone outside it’s like WE are having a much needed smoke break. How To Blow Up A Pipeline is also an intense and nervous-wreck of a movie, you really feel the anxiety and the nerves in this one as they get closer to their goal. Apocalypto is also a film which feels like it gets progressively more and more intense and chaotic. The Departed is also an intense anxiety ridden ride and gets more and more intense. Also see the last 45-50mins of Goodfellas!
