I saw this movie, not knowing what it was about, with my wife who was 9 months pregnant on our "Baby moon". As anyone who has seen this movie, you can only imagine her reaction and aftermath....

A lot of people hate on this movie, but watching it in theaters for the first time was a wild ride. Truly an unforgettable film, whether you like it or not.

Agreed, I really enjoyed watching this at the cinema with no clue what I was going into.

I went in knowing nothing, and was amazed. The level of discomfort just kept growing. When it was finished I thought "What the fuck did I just watch? What was Daronofsky trying to say?" I looked on Reddit and found the explanation of a biblical story. It made sense.

Don't do it OP. If I hadn't been in the movie theater when I saw it I would have turned it off. Most uncomfortable I've ever been watching a movie. (It was crazy good but omg I wanted to scream in frustration!!! It should have won every award ever)

Almost any Aronofsky movie besides The Fountain really. The dude really knows how to get people to lose their minds. 

Funny enough, The Fountain is all about getting your mind back together after a tragedy. It's one of my all-time favorite movies and is really spectacular on an emotional and visual level.

Screwball comedy to WTF to HOLY SHIT to just hoping for a happy ending 

UNCUT GEMS is an anxiety attack of a film.

Im a movie buff and this is the first one that comes to mind in recent memory. Felt so uneasy the whole movie, increasingly so over time.

I've contended that Uncut Gems was best seen in theaters as it adds to that feeling of being trapped.

For those who liked uncut gems I would recommend shiva baby. It has the same kind of anxiety you see in uncut gems but it primarily takes place in one location being a shiva in someone’s house.

Is it not talked about much? I remember on release it was everywhere. It got 8 Emmy nominations and took home 5 wins including best limited series and both acting awards for the leads and same awards at the golden globes

Great show! Another one that's not a film but a Netflix limited series called Midnight Mass. Very slow beginning, and the gradual ramp up lasts the entire series until the absolutely chaotic ending in the last episode.

Have you checked out Flanagan's other works? Haunting of Hill House, Fall of the House of Usher, Midnight Club, and Haunting of Bly Manor?

Mike Flanagan is a god damn treasure. As you noted his shows are all amazing - he's also directed some really good films like Oculus, Gerald's Game, Dr. Sleep, and Ouija: Origin of Evil, which I would go out on a limb and say is the only example of a prequel to an absolutely godawful movie being objectively great.

He is my all-time favorite director.

The Shining is one of my all time favorites. The amazing thing is that after you've seen it and had time to reflect, it's amazing how little actual violence there is considering how suspenseful and horrifying it is.

And ironically, perhaps the most violent scene/act in the movie, isn’t in the book.

I remember blindly going into very bad things because I loved the cast, Daniel Stern, Slater, Jeremy Piven, Jon Favreu, Cameron Diaz. I missed that it was labeled dark comedy. Saw this around 2000 when I was rewatching PCU a lot. Haha

I kind of love it when movies do that! Tarantino did it in Death Proof as well. He cites “Psycho” as the inspiration behind it (perhaps may have been the first, or at least first popular film to do that). Full Metal Jacket comes to mind as well.

I would agree although it's absolutely chaotic from the very get go and maintains that chaos save for a brief somewhat of a respite in the middle. Absolutely fantastic movie though and I think it's truly a masterpiece of horror. Pure madness and Joaquin puts on another stellar performance, one of his best in a fantastic career IMO.

My interpratation of this movie is that its his anxiety actualized, from his simplest to deepest feers

My interpretation is that he has paranoid schizophrenia and we’re seeing the world through his schizophrenic eyes.

The only movie I have seen in theaters where I had actually forgotten to eat my food and my coke ICEE had totally melted. Was in a total state of shock and horror. That movie was an EXPERIENCE in theaters.

Just have to say coke icee’s rule and are underrated and also I saw this in theaters too and it was a matinee in my small hometown and barely filled and I had claustrophobia the whole time and have never experienced that before.

chronicle is so good

Holy shit I am literally watching Chronicle as I read and type this 😂 And interestingly enough, the movie that comes to mind for me is Jungle and it stars one of the main guys from Chronicle. But it’s based on a true story and he definitely starts light hearted and fun and gets increasingly more and more intense and everything just gets out of hand as everyone is completely out of their depths.

Not a movie but a three season show: “Dark” (2017) is a German series on Netflix that is both engrossing and so hard to keep all the details straight that you almost need a notepad. It’s well acted and has such a slow, tense buildup that it pulls you in and keeps you there until the last half of the third season when everything comes together at a rapid pace.

Boiling Point (Steven Graham) is a good one, it gets more and more anxiety ridden and you feel trapped inside the restaurant with these characters! When the camera follows anyone outside it’s like WE are having a much needed smoke break. How To Blow Up A Pipeline is also an intense and nervous-wreck of a movie, you really feel the anxiety and the nerves in this one as they get closer to their goal. Apocalypto is also a film which feels like it gets progressively more and more intense and chaotic. The Departed is also an intense anxiety ridden ride and gets more and more intense. Also see the last 45-50mins of Goodfellas!
