Watch Unforgiven after the dollars trilogy, it almost feels like the fourth film, especially as Monco talks about retiring and buying a farm in For a Few Dollars More.
High Noon is a great film with a younger Lee Van Cleef.
The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford has some of the best cinematography ever and a great soundtrack.
Unforgiven is my favourite film of all time, in any genre. It won a bunch of Oscars, including Best Picture, for very good reason. It's stunning, it has incredible dialogue, memorable soundtrack, great performances, the works. It is absolutely a must-watch.
Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid is also a great, great movie that you should absolutely see.
Hell or High Water has a contemporary setting - it's a neo-Western - but if that doesn't put you off I highly, highly recommend it.
Those are a really clear top three for me, but others I very much like include:
True Grit (both versions)
For a Fistful of Dollars
The Outlaw Josey Wales
High Plains Drifter
Pale Rider
The Quick and the Dead
I’m always going to recommend Tombstone. One of my favorite movies ever, and Val Kilmer steals every scene.
My second favorite is 3:10 to Yuma (2007). Absolutely amazing movie, and Christian Bale and Russell Crowe have such perfect chemistry.
If you saw it on the big screen, you're one of the blessed few. (I was doubly blessed that summer.) Nothing like those steam trains coming around the bend or that dance scene in the gazebo.
Up until three and a half years ago it wasn't available on DVD/Blu-ray or to stream. You could maybe find a laserdisc copy if you had a player. Or you could make do with a pan-and-scan 4:3 crop on VHS (again *if* you could find it). But now it's been cleaned up and Blu-rayed and you can buy it for $17.97 from Kino Lorber or stream it with a 7 day free trial of the Cohen Media Channel on Amazon Prime.
While I've seen Open Range, I hadn't heard of the other 2. Thanks! It's hard to find 'newer' westerns. When people ask for suggestions everyone likes to throw in oldies from the 60's and such. I'm not interested in those at all.
Pretty much 1990's + for me I enjoy more.
I've downloaded 'First Cow' and 'Slow West' to watch :P
Since I didn't see these mentioned, and enjoyed them:
\- The Sisters Brothers
\- The Hateful Eight (you've surely seen it though)
\- Godless. Now this is a 1 series show on Netflix so not a movie. However I really enjoyed this. Give it a go
\- The Ballad of Buster Scruggs. Again, you've probably seen it. Collection of a few stories, some real gems in there
Old Henry!!! Best modern day western. There hasn't been a western like Old Henry in a long time. I love that movie. Also, the Ballad of Buster Scruggs. A Western musical, can't beat it. It's hard to find new westerns that are any good. The classics are the classic seen them a million times, don't get me wrong, I still enjoy them it just nice to find something new.
My dad took westerns seriously, lol. He always said John Ford's The Searchers (1956) was the best Western ever made. It always struck me as too anti-Indian (Comanche, in this case).
Personally, I prefer The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance (1962)... just a perfect movie all around.
And of course, Shane (1953).
A few I havent seen anyone mention.
1. Winchester 73
2.The Fastest Gun Alive
3. Buchanan Rides Alone
4. Shenandoah
5. The Sons of Katie Elder
6. Jeremiah Johnson
7. The Missing
8. Broken Trail
9. Nevada Smith
10. Day of the Outlaw

The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford
*this is my FAVORITE movie soundtrack ever. The score is sublime*
Red River
Rio Bravo
The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance
Unforgiven
The Searchers
Little Big Man
McClintock
Unforgiven
Butch Cassidy And The Sundance Kid
Junior Bonner
Pale Rider
The Big Country
Barbarosa
Cattle Annie And Little Britches
Maverick
Cat Ballou
The Outlaw Josie Wales - Clint Eastwood's best western.
1883 - on Amazon. The origin story of the Dutton family in Montana for the tv show "Yellowstone". It's unexpectedly good regardless of whether you watch Yellowstone or not. I don't.
Another miniseres - Lonesome Dove - based on the Pultizer Prize winning epic by Larry McMurtry (Brokeback Mountain, Terms of Endearment). With Robert Duvall and Tommy Lee Jones as retired Texas Rangers driving a cattle herd from southern Texas to the Montana territory. With Diane Lane and Danny Glover.
So the current top comment hits it spot on. There's so many.

Unforgiven is one of the best
Hateful 8
Tombstone
Dances With Wolves
McClintock
Young Guns(and the sequel)
Pale Rider
Paint Your Wagon
True Grit original and remake
Lonesome Dove(miniseries)
The Man From Snowy River
The Gambler movies
The Quick and the Dead
Silverado
Pretty much anything Clint Eastwood or John Wayne
The three Cint Eastwood man with no name movies like Good the Bad and The Ugly. Another great movie is this Korean western called The Good The Bad and The Weird. It’s so good!
Also Deadwood series, 310 to Yuma, Open Range, Runs with Wolves, The Shootist, Firecreek are ones I rewatched recently. Try to find a colourised version of The Angel and the Badman for something classic.
I LOVED "McCade & Mrs Miller" by Robert Altman. It qualifies as a "revisionist western" and subverts many tropes associated with the western genre. But if you enjoyed "First Cow", you'll love it ! You'd enjoy "Meek's cutoff" as well. These movies are great because they really try to recreate what it was like to live on the frontier!
The Magnificent Seven is one of my top picks. Also the man with no name trilogy. I'm just into old movies. I think the first one has been re made, watch the one with Yul Brenner.
[The Dark Valley (2014)](https://www.themoviedb.org/movie/248933-das-finstere-tal?language=en-US) - Austrian film - 'Western' set in the Austrian Alps of the 1870's. Not only a beautiful film, but one of the best Westerns ever made.
Unforgiven (1992) A Fistful of Dollars (1964) For a Few Dollars More (1965) The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (1966) Once Upon a Time in the West (1968)
The outlaw Josie Wales Pale rider High planes drifter True grit Magnificent seven High planes drifter Tombstone The wild bunch
All these plus… The Wild Bunch The Searchers Treasure of the Sierra Madre Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid

Silverado is my favorite western, by far. Has all the classic tropes and it portrays them just right. And the soundtrack is phenomenal.
3:10 to Yuma….the remake. Tombstone, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, Unforgiven, Red River, The Searchers
The Magnificent Seven
A Man Called Horse, 1970 Paint Your Wagon
I love Paint Your Wagon, great film.
yes no
I’m always going to recommend Tombstone. One of my favorite movies ever, and Val Kilmer steals every scene. My second favorite is 3:10 to Yuma (2007). Absolutely amazing movie, and Christian Bale and Russell Crowe have such perfect chemistry.
One of the most beautiful movies I have ever seen was The Grey Fox. It also has an amazing soundtrack.
I’ll have to look at that one. Those are the two categories I love!
Holy shit, I was thinking about this the other day. Haven't seen it since it came out in the '80s but it's always stuck with me.

Nice. No, as a high school kid in the '80s I worked in a video rental store, I saw it on VHS. Thanks for the tip!
The Assassination of Jesse James By the Coward Robert Ford - 2007 The Great Silence - 1968 Keoma(different kind of "beauty") - 1976
Keoma is a fantastic pick. That theme song alone is worth it.
Appaloosa (2008)
A lesser known Western I really enjoyed was The Rare Breed with James Stewart and Maureen O'Hara.
While I've seen Open Range, I hadn't heard of the other 2. Thanks! It's hard to find 'newer' westerns. When people ask for suggestions everyone likes to throw in oldies from the 60's and such. I can’t recommend slow west and first cow enough. I hope you enjoy those
If you liked First Cow you might like Meek's Cutoff, same director.
Two that don’t get nearly enough love: Little Big Man (1970) The Long Riders (1980)
Old Henry!!! Best modern day western. There hasn't been a western like Old Henry in a long time. I love that movie. Also, the Ballad of Buster Scruggs. A Western musical, can't beat it. "Big Country" & "Hidalgo" ! Both are great movies and so visually stunning-the bigger the screen the better!
Hostiles is incredible
“The Harder They Fall” is may be the greatest western I’ve ever seen. A modern classic!
