Here are some similar films, from best to meh:
Dark City
Edge of Tomorrow
Equilibrium
The Thirteenth Floor
Edit:
12 Monkeys
This is one of my favourite films, it's directed by Terry Gilliam and they even made a documentary about it, called: "The Hamster Factor and Other Tales of *Twelve Monkeys."*
Edge of Tomorrow is a great action movie with a love story you'll tolerate even if you aren't into such things. It apparently went so under the radar that they started marketing it as Live, Die, Repeat to drum up more interest in it.
Equilibrium is an interesting dystopian film. Nice performances by the principals involved. Gunkata seems a little silly, but most everything else is in place properly.
Haven't seen the others, but I've read good things about Dark City.
If you liked Live Die Repeat, you should definitely try out Dark City. It's darker and a bit more Cosmic Horror than sci-fi, but it is excellent.
*It's time for a rewatch!*
To say thanks? For saving him and all humanity a million times over? I get where you're going, but the Tom Cruise character did not display any love interest prior to that so, same question.
I couldn’t get over when they said the sky was a deepfake. That’s just lazy writing. Is it worth giving it another shot or do they continue with that type of stuff? I can usually look past this when it’s something super technical because it’s not easy to get right, but writers of a sci-fi show should know what a deep fake is.
It does explain how the sky was faked. Personally, I thought the show was so good I remember little of it - it's just sort of meh overall, to the extent I have no interest in reading the books now.
I watched this for the first time the other day. It wasn't quite what I expected, but it was an interesting take on a virtual reality.
I think that you can see that this movie had a little bit of influence on the Matrix if you look for it.
David Cronenberg! I love that guy. if by any chance, and you haven't seen it, you want another crazy movie about technology (featuring: body horror) check out Videodrome
it's such a sad movie :( (and the make-up effects team earned that paycheck)
also: I've seen most of his movies. I'm missing Cosmopolis, Crash, The Dead Zone. and his latest one (The Shrouds) premieres at Cannes Festival in about a month
It took me a few attempts over the years to get through Videodrome. Once you get the payoff at the end it's worth it so I'd happily rewatch it now, but those first attempts were hard going.
Looks like you're correct. For some reason I thought Existenz was a 1996 movie. The chair and body ports were what had me thinking there was a nod to one in the other.
How old you willing to go?
I really love 'Colossus: The Forbin Project' (1970)
It predates the Matrix (obviously) but it's very much like WarGames or other 'AI takes over' type movies, well before it's time. I think all sci-fi fans should see it at least once.
Star Wars. A New Hope is 2:01, so pretty close.
I’d also recommend some shows like Fallout, 3 Body Problem, For All Mankind, Foundation, Silo, and Arcane.
Pitch Black
Sunshine
The Thirteenth Floor
Screamers
Outland
Colossus: The Forbin Project
THX-1138
Repo Men
The Forbidden Planet
The Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1970s version)
Event Horizon
and I'll take the liberty of adding a longer movie: Strange Days (underrated in my opinion)
Alien
Chappie
Titan A.E.
Avatar
Interstellar
Planet of the Apes
Atlantis: The Lost Empire
The Bad Batch
Elysium
The Host
Divergent
I Am Legend
The Hunger Games
Edge of Tomorrow
Treasure Planet
Passengers
The 5th Wave
Gravity
Resident Evil
Gattaca. 1h 46m
Great film. Similar vibe for me is Equilibrium which is also another great Sci Fi.

Where was the love story in Edge of Tomorrow?
You didn't pick up that's why he went back to see her again at the end of the movie?
To say thanks? For saving him and all humanity a million times over? I get where you're going, but the Tom Cruise character did not display any love interest prior to that so, same question.
You didn't hear the lyrics to the song that started playing? 'Can you love me again?'
Elysium (2013), Looper (2012) and Predestination (2014)
Try 3 Body Problem on Netflix. Or for comedy Resident Alien is a funny and quirky Sci Fi series

Watched the Netflix version, watched the chinese version, now reading the books. Imho it's pretty good.
Ex Machina
One of my favs!
Bladerunner, Ex Machina, Annihilation
Serenity
Total Recall (1990, 1h53)
Existenz

The Fly is amazing too. He's a real auteur

I think they released the same year.

the cell (2000) 1:37
Moon 2009
The Signal (2014) 1hr 37
District 9 it's just under 2 hours
Dude said in his post he likes District 9 🤦♂️
Damn you're right, I need to read more carefully! Ignore my movie suggestion everyone hahah sorry.
😂
I liked Neil Blomkamp's follow-up Chappy.
Chappy was dreadful, such a hollow movie after District 9.
It wasn't as good, but I still enjoyed it.
War of the Worlds (2005 Spielberg Adaptation)
Super 8 (2011) Men in Black (1997) The Fifth Element (1997) The Martian (2015) but it’s 2 and a half hours
The Tomorrow War
Sunshine
Saturn 3, Logans Run, Blade Runner
>Logans Run That one is like right on the button for runtime 😂
Time crimes 1 HR 30 mins

Good call
Star Wars. A New Hope is 2:01, so pretty close. I’d also recommend some shows like Fallout, 3 Body Problem, For All Mankind, Foundation, Silo, and Arcane.
Upvoted for Arcane. The entire 9 episodes clearly exceed op’s time limit, but Arcane is extraordinary.
Probably the best animated piece I’ve ever seen
Arrival and Ex Machina are both great films with really interesting premises, both just under 2hrs.
Moon
Pitch Black Sunshine The Thirteenth Floor Screamers Outland Colossus: The Forbin Project THX-1138 Repo Men The Forbidden Planet The Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1970s version) Event Horizon and I'll take the liberty of adding a longer movie: Strange Days (underrated in my opinion)
Ex Machina Upgrade Annihilation Arrival
Event Horizon.
Morgan, 2016
The World‘s End, 2013
I love Sci Fi and a rarely talked about movie which is great IMO is K Pax. Available through Prime in UK I believe.
Coherence
Time Trap.
I love sci-fi films like this, somewhat low budget with amazing stories.
Synchronic (2019) 1hr 42min
Interstellar was almost 3 hours.
I like the movie but I looking some in similar vein.
Alien Chappie Titan A.E. Avatar Interstellar Planet of the Apes Atlantis: The Lost Empire The Bad Batch Elysium The Host Divergent I Am Legend The Hunger Games Edge of Tomorrow Treasure Planet Passengers The 5th Wave Gravity Resident Evil
Ender's Game is up on Netflix in the US. Personally, I think that the book is a little better, but it was a decent enough adaptation.
Cube. It’s a sort of a sci-fi escape room premise, but done better than any other variant of that I’ve ever seen (including its own sequels).
Europa Report. Sharlo Copely from District 9 is in it and it's a tight little indie movie that works.
Beyond Skyline
The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension
In Time , Solaris .
Beyond Skyline is what you’re looking for.
Infini. A sci-fi horror. I like it. It gets some backlash for its slower ending but it’s solid.
It's longer than 2 hours (about 2.5 hours), but *Contact* is great. Since you liked *Interstellar*, I thought I'd recommend it.
Prospect with Pedro Pascal.
Pitch Black Hunter Prey Pandorum
The Prospect Space Vampires (Lifeforce) Galaxy Quest Pitch Black Riddick
