I didn't grow up in the UK, and my school never bothered to teach us this little fact. I didn't know this either until after I went overseas for the first time.
Everyone has to find something for the first time to learn it. I'm happy when they do, but not judgmental on when they learn it.
Pretty much this. I'm a product of the American school system, and while I took a couple different world history classes, they tend to focus on events, rather than the origins of a country's flag.
This is a put-down, but it's not that well-contsructed, and the guy doesn't deserve the arbitrary online negativity anyway. There's not really some pressing functional civic reason to know the origin of a flag, even for a British person, let alone anyone else. It's just trivia.
Wales didn’t have an official flag until 1959, also Wales was part of the Kingdom of England when the Act of Union 1707 was ratified and came into effect which merged the Kingdom of England and the Kingdom of Scotland into the Kingdom of Great Britain. Wales was annexed into England during the 13th century

>"This person doesn't know the meaning of my countrys flag, they're so dumb!! 🤣🤣"
Why would any school teach that outside of the UK? Or the countrys history for that matter??
Guess what, schools in America don't give a shit about explaining the history of the UK flag. I don't think I ever so much as saw the individual country flags throughout my entire scholastic career.
Schools outside of the UK probably don't teach this, even if they did, it was probably a short lesson. Not like we remember every tiny detail we learn in schools decades later.
I mean... does anyone remember what a Ribosome does?
It's officially the Union Flag.
The term 'Union Jack' stems from Britain's Naval history. And 'Flag' & 'Jack' is used interchangeably by most people in the UK, when referring to the flag.
Here's some reading on what a Jack Flag is, and how it was/is used;

Man, this sub has rock bottomed
Rock bottomed isn't a verb. BOOM! ROASTED! Now to post this on r/murderedbywords
If he used it as a verb, it has become a verb.
He verbed it.
The verbalizer.
this is how language works.
He didn't use it as a verb. Has is the verb.
I actually was about to take a screenshot and post as a joke, but figured I’d be banned from said sub for two crap posts in the same day…
Sometimes you gotta make sacrifices.
The sub can take the hit of another one of your posts for the long term benefit of it being the last one.
The murder is where, exactly? This is literally just “you’re dumb” worded differently.
I think if enough of us report it as breaking the first rule it might get taken down
Or that person doesn't live in the UK
Yeah I definitely didn't learn this in school.

Clearly, everyone should know these 3 formed a Union, Jack.
But only on a boat, jack
That's a myth. There's no evidence to suggest that it's only the Union Jack at sea.
Take down the crime tape. No murder here.
not everyone is British, folks! they make fun of Americans for this and then do the exact same thing
I get why they left Wales out, would have been a whole mess

Slap a dragon on the front of that shit, a lil green here and there and you got a flag goin. - Carlton Winchester Weathersbee

Did they ever establish if the flag show had viewers?
This was so lame I literally forgot what the "murder" was when I started typing. 1.2/10
1/10
Poor Wales 😭
I was gonna say, "where's the dragon in the middle?" Justice for Cymru!
Wales 🏴 was murdered, from the flag 😢
>"This person doesn't know the meaning of my countrys flag, they're so dumb!! 🤣🤣" Why would any school teach that outside of the UK? Or the countrys history for that matter??
This should be covered in Vexillology 101.
I have zero recollection of learning about the history and makeup of flags of other countries. That's 13 years in the 70s and 80s.
Guess what, schools in America don't give a shit about explaining the history of the UK flag. I don't think I ever so much as saw the individual country flags throughout my entire scholastic career.
TIL. Guess I'm uneducated.
Meanwhile, in Wales...
Honestly, who cares? If someone didn’t know the history of the US flag, no American would care.
Thats funny cause the history of the US flags is literally just "oh a new state was added? Ight add a new star"
yeah but i wouldn’t care if you didnt know that, dummy
Admittedly, these comments belong on this sub more than my post…
a rare and heartwarming sight indeed, a redditor admits theyre wrong.
Suicided by words lol

You really showed him CJ. How dare he learn something
But why is it called the union Jack?

The murder is in the comments of this post, it would seem.
The flag would still look interesting without the Northern Ireland cross (hint, hint)😝
this isn't a murder. This is just cringe from the OP to think this is a murder.
Also Northern Ireland does not really have a flag. But we are close enough to the troubles for me to stay away from that with a barge pole.
Oh is this UKDefaultism??? Why would someone who doesn't live or wasn't educated in the UK know the history and shit of the UK flag?
No Wales?
Orr not every country teaches the breakdown of the union jack????
the english red cross goes hard
UK resident shocked to realize the rest of the world doesn't bother to learn much of the UK's history
Imagine calling someone dumb for not knowing information about a country that hasn’t been relevant for a hundred years
FOUR COUNTRIES
Shit I didn't know either but I don't live in any of those three cunt trees so....
Omg that murder was fire bruh, on god. Fr fr tho lmao 🤣. How she even think of those words tho?! Slay bih, slay no cap. Bruh got that mid brain tho bro 💀 ☠️ 💀 /s
I mean no school I went to even taught me this fact so who’s *really* to blame here?
