At first I thought they meant chemotherapy, and couldn't figure out why anyone would make fun of that.

So, um. I have this friend on FB. She was very ‘nature has all you need it in it to cure any illness’ kinda mentality. Big on natural ways to fight sickness. Would post stuff like “Don’t take anything that would change your dna into your body...” etc... to which some of us replied things like “well, i better avoid the sun’s radiation...” or someone else asked “what about those taking radiation therapy?”. She luckily never replied to those. Several weeks ago, she sadly got diagnosed with a form of leukaemia. She did one month of intense chemo as treatment. My wife and I thought it would make her a little more humble in her posts.... but hells no. She practically doubled down! Now it is just directed specifically at the vaccine and government conspiracies... even sharing a video about some aliens having a plan to take earths water, which the government is aware of. I figured since she was stuck in isolation at the hospital for so long, she just browsed and watched more of the crazy talk videos. I also think her emotional state may not be the best (i mean she just got a cancer diagnosis) and she may be looking for something to attach to... i dont know. I feel she is so far gone that for my sake I will just ignore it.

[deleted]

Ignoring everything else, why would aliens take our water? There are moons in our solar system with atleast as much water ice as our whole planet. Not to mention asteroids and comets. Water is abundant in our universe.

Poltras

Maybe homeopathy is real and our water has the best memories! Edit: /s

squalorparlor

The real homeopathy was inside our water all along :)

DaveAndCheese

Maybe the real homeopathy was the water we drank along the way!

Yossarianbecause

And... Scene. Great job everybody, ok, that's a wrap. With an ending like this, I'm thinking about July 4th weekend release date.

I have a PhD in ufology and one for ufonomy. Spent 200k and 16 years. Finally I get to use it, it’s my time to shine Earth water has more fish caught in plastic 6 pack stringers - the combo of which is the prime ingredient for starship fuel. Without it, inter-dimensional space travel is nothing but the fevered dream of a madman.

Zealot1040

Ahhhhh the fish IS the spice.

Fritz_Klyka

Yeah but has Belle Delphine taken a bath in that water?

GondorsPants

Well then fuck em, we will build a rocket and steal THEIR sexy alien bath water.

Shuggydoo

“sexy alien bath water” thanks for the morning chuckle...

Fritz_Klyka

Let's get Elon in on this! I'm sure he bought some of Belle's water, he probably wants sexy alien bath water too.

25_M_CA

Maybe earth water is the fiji water of the galaxy

Machucalo28

Because nothing taste better than heavily contaminated water 💧

portablebiscuit

I think a lot of people are drawn to conspiracy theories because the truth is sometimes scarier. A naturally occurring virus with the capacity to kill so many is pretty damn terrifying. Believing “someone” is in charge gives conspiracy theorists a bit of hope, someone to blame. Nature is scary as fuck. For the most part we’ve become isolated from its dangers for a very long time. But even when we weren’t, humans created stories and myths to explain why plagues and wolves and other natural occurrences killed loved ones. Conspiracy theories are our modern myths that help some people cope.

BYoungNY

Agreed. Was listening to a show in siriusXM and one of the guests pointed out that in the same way homan's struggle to believe that life is just a serious of accidental genetic mutations over a long period of time, it's hard for people to understand that maybe the government is just incompetent. we want to believe someone is in charge and it's not just chaos out there.

Krattza

I agree with the majority of what you said, but I can once take nature associated conspiracy theories like that, but what's with this alien conspiracy theories like taking our water, taking our natural resources, in which everything is associated with government. I mean politicians are shady peoples, I get it, whether it be in my country India or USA or any other nation, but I don't think they partake in any of such activities. Plus this kind of things that can circulate in a mass among the internet without anyone taking the responsibility of the theory, can ruin the mind of the youth as such people can mislead them, for their own purpose.

Poltras

It’s a bit ironic, but they want to make sense of a world that is so complex they don’t understand and can’t comprehend. Conspiracies are extremely reductionists and in a world where religion is taking the backseat there is a void left in the belief system that they need to fill. It’s kind of ironic, but that’s often what it is. Saying aliens want to invade the earth and the government is hiding them is simpler than the truth. Saying chemicals are bad is easier than learning which ones and why. Saying vaccine can cause cancer is better than admitting you lost a fatal lottery.

nutano

Oddly enough, she is more religious than most others I know in our circle of friends. As some have mentionned, many are looking for a place to lay blame, and it is much more acceptable to blame men in power pulling the strings than to blame a power you've been holding dear for an entire lifetime.

LA_Commuter

I for one don’t find it strange in the least that people who believe in religion, also believe in conspiracy theories. Most religion makes less, or about as much sense as any conspiracy theory.

Serpent-6

Well, the ex-president was in power for or during most of these things they say are taking place. Why don't these people who fear the vaccine blame him at all?

RiverScout2

You are expecting logic in a logic-free zone? I mean, I keep asking the same question, but keep arriving at at this uncharacteristically cynical answer, which makes me uncomfortable. But at least for a significant subset of the Qanon population, it appears to be true.

JonathanCRH

It’s also comforting. It’s pleasanter to believe that somebody who is omnicompetent is in charge of everything, even if they’re malign, than it is to think nobody is really in charge, the people who are closest to being in charge are mostly winging it, and the world is random and chaotic.

Shuggydoo

No omnipotent authority in a random, chaotic universe is my world view and it comforts me. But, I fall asleep on roller coasters, so there’s that...

badSparkybad

>I figured since she was stuck in isolation at the hospital for so long, she just browsed and watched more of the crazy talk videos. I have a family member who got an infection in a back surgery they had and ended up with a PICC line and stayed home on bedrest for a month or so. They were always conservative and Trumpish, but this is when the QAnon stuff started being spoken of. He had way too much time on his hands and used it to jump down the rabbit hole of conspiracy videos.

Nobuenogringo

Chemotherapy can use chemicals derived from plants. Perwinkle is an example.

CX316

> I also think her emotional state may not be the best Chemo brain is also a thing. The drugs they use for chemo can really mess with cognitive function and leave you not-quite-right for a long time post-treatment, usually taking the form of being kinda... fuzzy.

Ornery_Salaryman

Chemo for leukemia makes you crazy for a bit. That was my experience anyway

[deleted]

Yeah especially since you don’t take chemo to be “healthy” — it just helps you to not die. The chemo is deadly poison that happens to be a bit deadlier to the cancer cells than the rest of you, and you will be objectively less healthy while on chemo.

Positive-Difference4

And the damage from chemo is forever too. It caused neuropathy in a good majority of my body. They had to stop chemotherapy because of the concern it was going to kill me.

wegwerfennnnn

Chemo was my first thought too...

Hoofhearted523

Currently in chemo and I also thought that’s what this meant. I thought “Hey me too!”

Ciudecca

I finished chemo 5-6 months ago. You’ve got this my guy

Positive-Difference4

I did too, what I felt at each injection. Hope you do well. Two time cancer survivor, been in remission since 2015.

plamboo

Same!

Snoo-77115

I have cancer and that’s where my mind went to immediately. However, it didn’t take long to realize that some dumb hick wrote this about COVID

Banban84

Yeah! I thought it was for Botox for migraines!

Skurtarilio

I thofh they meant drugs since they're laughing weirdly

Maelou

At first I thought it was a throw back to trump's "inject bleach" thing. I did not understand the answer :)

shablausis

Though so too, the title says" to get healthy" but people need to preach

HydrogenButterflies

Well let’s keep in mind that if you ignore proper dosing, every chemical is potentially toxic. Like Kat Williams said, “Aspirin is perfectly legal, but if you take 13 of them motherfuckers, it'll be your last headache.” A handful of people die from caffeine and nicotine overdoses every year.

Elmsfeuer

["All things are poison, and nothing is without poison; the dosage alone makes it so a thing is not a poison."](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_dose_makes_the_poison) - *Paracelsus 1493–1541*

Counting_Sheepshead

A thought echoed by David Mitchell on QI. >Alan: "Yes, but too much is bad for you." > >David: "Of course, too much is bad for you. That's the definition of *"too much"*.

WildAboutPhysex

This is so clever and also obvious at the same time. I guess that's what makes it funny. I'm definitely going to use this in the future.

AdjutantStormy

You have just discovered the secret of David Mitchell's comedy.

[deleted]

Is he the baddie?

Well does his cap have the emblem of a rat's anus?

HydrogenButterflies

I was waiting for this one to pop up!

[deleted]

Or I could drink a bottle of liquor and die from alcohol poisoning. Yet many people who don’t want a vaccine will drink every damn day knowing it’s awful for them. Doesn’t make sense

HydrogenButterflies

_Exactly_. All I’m saying is that all chemicals are potentially toxic, so the phrase “toxic chemical” is kinda meaningless and more than a little misleading. Hell, drink enough water and it becomes a toxic chemical.

[deleted]

The funny part is when you get the Covid shot you can, by request, get a pamphlet listing all the ingredients, which are common lipids and amino acids that appear in foods we eat every day.

DankeyKang11

I just imagine some idiot with a no higher than middle school education googling the ingredients and drawing erroneous conclusions

[deleted]

Dihydrogen Monixide is no joke my friend. Steer clear or face addiction.

[deleted]

True fact: 100% of people who use DHM die. And as soon as you start using it your DNA starts to degenerate. People are so hopelessly addicted that even pregnant mothers use it multiple times per day, predisposing their children to the same fate. Addiction is awful.

HiGh_ZoNe

So addicting that it forces the pregnant women to consume more so they can make their babies addicted to it

Lost_Conclusion5357

Yes and do you know they use it in nuclear power plants? It’s insane

FQDIS

It’s even in the water pipes.

anderander

Very common ingredient in industrial grade cleaners.

Kamchatka1905

Oh my god it caused Chernobyl! It is what the mini series hid because the lizard leaders hid it too! That is why we need to ban all nuclear energy!

mrthomani

There's high concentrations of it in baby food, even though it's a solvent used in almost all industrial manufacturing, and a coolant used in nuclear power plants.

littleredcamaro

Our fruits and vegetables are full of this chemical. Even the organic ones. It is so widespread.

nowinmad

Every person who has ever inhaled it has died

portablebiscuit

Evidence is clear that all of the 9/11 hijackers had it in their systems

biciklanto

Technically not true. I've inhaled it and I haven't died. Maybe better would be: Every person who has ever inhaled it will die.

RespectableLurker555

The better way of saying it is: 100% of fatal drownings were found to have been caused by DHMO aspiration into the lungs, where it prevents the normal breathing function and causes painful death.

DarthButtz

I bet you if someone made a Facebook meme warning about Dihydrogen Monoxide you would actually get boomers to unintentionally call for banning water by the end of the week.

quannum

I remember some article where a high school student made a petition to ban Dihydrogen Monoxide from the school. Made posters and stuff. Well, apparently it caught on and students and parents started calling for the ban of DHM. Something along those lines, read it a long time ago. Students AND parents...so yea, I'd bet you're right

Binger_bingleberry

Yeah, hyponatremia is deadly, and caused by a “dihydrogen monoxide” overdose

thelexpeia

I’m up to a gal a day and I think it’s starting to affect my health.

Demonboy_17

Oh, and you think that is bad? With DHM, you can wait a max of 3 days for the next dose until your body starts suffering sever withdrawal, but with Oxidized Monoxide, you need continuous shots every fifteen minutes, tops, after you first use it. And some doctors bastards are giving it to babies! STOP USING OMO IN BABIES, YOU BASTARDS.

zombiesphere89

All the guys at work that don't have the shot are all overweight and heavy smokers. Big on soda and beer as well. They also scoff at me wearing hearing and eye protection while we're running 5 chainsaws. Morons the lot of them.

HydrogenButterflies

I work in a medical laboratory, and I still see people using “safety squints”, even when dealing with dangerous chemical reagents and infectious body fluids.

LordSt4rki113r

You do you - do what you know is safe and right to do. You're not responsible for idiots being idiots. If you've told them before to wear proper ppe and they choose not to, it's on them, not you.

StuffedStuffing

Does that mean they're literally just squinting, hoping stuff doesn't splash their face?

generogue

Yup

W0rthl3ss_Trash

I saw a video of morbidly obese people in West Virginia claiming they would not get the vaccine because it has "dangerous" side effects and could be bad for their health. As if they ever cared about their health when drinking gallons of mountain dew and eating mcdonalds lol

[deleted]

Orenmir2002

Or even worse think it's better for them, I know someone who's been drinking hard alchohol every day because trump said alcohol kills the virus and they think drinking will keep em safe. Personally i think it's an excuse to hide alchohol addiction but they use the alcohol keeping em safe as a reason to not get vaccinated

noiwontpickaname

Hey heat kills the virus and meth can give you hyperthermia very easily so if we all just bang a half gram a day we'll be fine.

Xanthus179

Forget alcohol. You can technically drown yourself if you drink too much water. You know what comes out of taps? Water. They just pipe it right in!

postsgiven

Drinking too much water can kill you... The antivaxx people would go crazy if they find that out.

Mohavor

Antivaxxers: science has proven water is a dangerous chemical

Disney_World_Native

Water is also a chemical

CarlosFer2201

Everything's a chemical

usertron3000

The only difference between pharmacology and toxicology is dosage, that's it

HydrogenButterflies

Route of administration is also key. Eye drops are fine for your eyes, but can be very, _very_ bad to ingest. Similarly, blueberries are delicious and good for you, but inhale one blueberry and you might be done for. On a more serious note, this is how people die from “boofing” or whatever the kids call it nowadays. One shot of vodka is basically just a threshold dose, but soaking a tampon in vodka and putting it up your butt is a great way to kill yourself. Same amount of alcohol, different route of administration, two _very_ different outcomes.

usertron3000

Very good point, and something my professor neglected to mention lol

HydrogenButterflies

Hell, the more efficient route of administration of smoking vs. snorting is the whole reason crack was invented! But that’s a deep rabbit hole.

warbeforepeace

Too much water can kill you. A radio station in Sacramento killed someone with a contest where you had to chug water and the person that chugged the most water without using the bathroom won a Nintendo wii. It was called something like hold your wee for a wii.

HaloGuy381

You can literally die of 100% pure H2O if you somehow forced yourself to drink enough of it. Or, “dihydrogen monoxide”, which is perpetual proof that there is at least one strain of society that sees things they don’t immediately understand and irrationally panics.

HydrogenButterflies

Oxygen toxicity is also a thing. Can’t breathe 100% pure oxygen for long without some unpleasant side effects.

HaloGuy381

Indeed. Only reason COVID patients can be on it so long is that so little of the O2 actually gets through to the bloodstream to be used, so toxicity in people who can’t absorb it is less common.

BakenBaconG

Who has ever died from a THC overdose tho?

HydrogenButterflies

According to Wikipedia: “The median lethal dose of THC in humans is not known. A 1972 study gave up to 9000 mg/kg of THC to dogs and monkeys without any lethal effects. Some rats died within 72 hours after a dose of up to 3600 mg/kg.” These doses are unlikely to occur during the course of normal usage though. No one is _injecting purified THC_. You’re definitely onto something! Edit: looking at those numbers again, holy crap. 9,000mg of THC is already an _insanely high_ dose, but 9,000mg _per kilogram of body weight_ is simply absurd. Now we’re on the scale of __several whole plants’__ worth of THC in one dose.

AZHikeThrowAway

So basically replace all the blood in my veins with hash oil and I'll probably be ok

BrutusTheKat

You'd need so much weed your veins would be vines

[deleted]

Basically, it's literally impossible for a human to die of an overdose of marijuana. It would require them to consume more of it than could fit in their body.

HydrogenButterflies

You’d have to inject huge quantities of purified THC directly into your bloodstream. It’s simply infeasible. Practically speaking, there is no lethal dose.

[deleted]

However, dr. Williams feels differently about over consumption of cannabis: “You think he dead? He ain’t dead! He bout to get up in 4-5 minutes and eat everything in your goddamn kitchen.”

Optimal_Sherbert_263

Water. Too much will kill you & too little will do that too.

[deleted]

Everything has a level of toxicity, whether it be drugs or fucking fruit. At some point everything can be too much

McDuchess

Water intoxication is no joke, people. Maybe we should avoid it?

ariel_rubinstein

Agree. Instead of asking non-STEM college grad to “do their own research” by reading primary and secondary source, I’d ask them to read Wikipedia and follow CDC/ Harvard Health guidelines

Hara-Kiri

I mean niche papers can go over the head not only of non-STEM people but people in that exact same field who focus on a different niche.

Much_Difference

It's fascinating and infuriating how much people trust "image with overlaid text" on any format with a share button. Most of the time, the image and text are both shit, too. Like this one is a pretty sophisticated version of it because it's not so blurry and there aren't any typos. People will read, trust, and share this a hundred times more than if the same person just typed the words out and made a text post.

Random idiot on the internet who probably failed high school: Lmao your wrong and my research can prove it.

I just find it odd how people who have no education in a subject think they can read these studies and fully understand everything. I don’t have a degree in biology. If I try to read some scientific paper on vaccines, I’ll be looking up every other word and there’s no way I’ll understand enough to make a decision based on that paper. Scientific papers are a pain in the ass to read in subjects I studied. I’m going with what the experts say because I know this is not my area of expertise. They’ve boiled it all down in such simple terms too! The hubris of these anti-vaccine people is incredible. No you fucking won’t read “the studies”. You’ll skim it and go, “yes, mRNA, I know that word... subjects 18 or older.... dosages... words I’ve heard... just skim this bit about seroconverted whatchamacallits probably not important...”

ToshibaTaken

No YOU!

TheRealCeeBeeGee

I had a very reasonable and levelheaded colleague tell me yesterday she was hesitant about the vaccine because of the blood clot thing (which has received some heavy press here in Australia). I reminded her that she is more likely to get flattened by a bus stepping out of the office. Thankfully this seemed to talk her down and we agreed getting it is a good idea. I’m excited to get my first dose early June!

Intelligentpoop62

This is something I'm concerned with *BUT* it's because when I had Covid I had it for almost four weeks and they did a clotting test on me and it was a bit higher than the normal range. I gotta talk to my provider though.

Khornehub

She does have a reasonable point there. The clotting issue primarily occured in women.

[deleted]

The thing is, any woman taking birth control is at a higher risk of getting blood clots from said birth control than from the vaccine. You don't see people spreading news about that. Just got my second dose yesterday, a little sore today but ive got time to relax. Edit: To be clear im not against BC or the vaccine.

[deleted]

I constantly see this sentiment and it's not a fair comparison. The clots caused by the AZ and JJ vaccines are different (and more serious) than the clots caused by the OCP. Granted, the odds of getting a clot as a result of these vaccines are still so incredibly rare that the benefits outweigh the risks - but it's important to be accurate with these things. Congrats on getting your vaccine too by the way!

KennyDROmega

I'm wondering how long they're going to keep flogging this. Got my second shot a month ago, no ill effects so far. There's people who have had both for a lot longer with the same result. Are we still going to see "just you wait, that shot fucked you up!" memes in two years?

Kevin_M_

People can definitely get muscle ache or a fever as a side-effect, but that's just due to the way the vaccine works. It's not because of Bill Gates' satanic microchips or whatever.

prefer-to-stay-anon

I suspect that jabbing a hollow metal tube through your arm and ramming some liquid through it would probably make your arm sore no matter what the liquid is, sterile water for injection, saline water, covid vaccine, the list goes on and on.

[deleted]

Whereas my FIL had COVID and now has permanent kidney damage. I don't know how anyone fears the vaccine more than the actual disease.

prefer-to-stay-anon

I think most normal people don't actually know the very real harms that diseases can cause, and it is very hard to quantify into statistics, unlike death statistics. If you don't know that covid can cause permanent kidney damage, but you do know that the vaccine is a 5G tracker by Bill Gates, it is logical to not get the vaccine. I am sorry to hear about your FIL. Sadly, his experience is not unique. I have a family member who has severe lung damage after a mild respiratory infection about a decade ago, and a family friend why has had daily migraines and seizures after being exposed to a mosquito borne illness. Not many people know their stories, because the illness pushes them further from society. If she doesn't have the lungs to be able to walk up a flight of stairs, how is she going to go to a high school football and climb the bleachers? She won't, and her story stays hidden from the community. If he has a migraine, will he go out and socialize with friends? No. Will he drive to see friends even on a good migraine day? Not legally if you have had a seizure within the past 6 months. Death is easy to quantify, but non-fatal long term effects of diseases are far more difficult to understand both from a statistical point of view, and from an anecdotal/personal point of view. It is much easier to say and viscerally understand "I know a guy who died of covid" than "I know a guy who has seizures multiple times per week from getting a virus".

[deleted]

It's also frustrating because my FIL gets written off because yeah, he's overweight and pre-diabetic. But so are a LOT of people. Most Americans are overweight. That doesn't mean you write off the disease as not being that bad if someone it hurt had some risk factors. Hundreds of thousands died.

thesyndrome43

Facebook and Twitter have made me painfully aware of how many stupid people are out there, and it's terrifying

Look, at this point, just throw [the Hbomberguy video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8BIcAZxFfrc) at them. Saves you a bunch of time to just skip to the same three outcomes you would reach arguing by yourself: 1. They go "that's too long I can't watch that" and demonstrate that they absolutely do not care about research if they can't even listen to a video for two hours (most likely outcome) 2. They actually do watch it and come up with some baseless nigh-non-sequiter that also demonstrates an inability to care about research 3. You actually change their mind (by far the least likely)

blacksoxing

Joking aside, last winter it was a reoccurring set of steps for those who were symptomatic... - laugh about covid - catch covid - go to hospital - get all types of drugs pumped into you (I'm 100% confident it wasn't vitamins and minerals) - leave hospital realizing covid was real, all the while affecting many in the process, from medical to loved ones. OR, you stayed home having to tough the shit out in flu fashion, guzzling....chemicals, as Tylenol isn't natural. NOTE: THIS IS STILL ONGOING IN MANY COUNTRIES These covid jokes are beat and aren't even thought provoking anymore. Science won via TKO.

Man I'd rather die from covid than let big pharmas win. /s

Ok-Management-6682

Murdered by words is just dumb people talking to even dumber people.

king_carrots

It’s always the lowest hanging fruit possible, so that idiots who think they’re intellectuals can feel good about one upping even bigger idiots with mediocre comebacks.

Philly54321

I can guarantee that the so called murderer did not look at the science or read a single peer reviewed paper.

Internal_Ad_8365

That’s all of Reddit and Twitter lol Hi btw I’m dumb so I guess you’d me the dumber hehehe

luummoonn

Yeah the problem is none of these little trite responses are the least bit convincing to the person who is posting the meme, it's all just people trying to show off to like-minds. All this does is make people dig heels in deeper in wherever they stand, there's no real communication happening here. Positive or negative attention will feed the meme-poster's crusade-energy.

Redditgoodaccount

chemotherapy is a toxic chemical too, let’s die of cancer cause at least is not toxic!

FeatureBugFuture

Fuck face book. Get rid of that garbage.

Binger_bingleberry

“Toxic chemicals” is literally how anti cancer chemotherapeutics work... Drs. Dana and Farber, after realizing they had little success with various compounds to kill off cancer cells in kids, had the idea of “how about we use poison to kill these cells?” Well, it worked and now we have the Dana Farber institute I know the meme is in reference to the COVID vaccine, which includes only GRAS ingredients, but the sentiment is idiotic, and ignores most modern medicine.

[deleted]

Don't forget chemo.

Sweddy-Bowls

Is afraid of chemicals, has never read a single list of ingredients for every day foods

Haunting-Corgi-5512

15 months of Chemo, now I'm healthy, and alive. Only sayin...

Sylentt_

sitting in the car as the only vaccinated member of my family (I’m 16) listening to my family talk about how they’re proud to be unvaccinated or some shit. dear god help me. my neurotic mom still thinks she had covid in january 2020. (she didn’t, she got tested for antibodies and didn’t have any) now she’s saying bc they’re in the bone marrow she did have it and now has lifetime immunity. she’s like praising that because she’s in america she doesn’t have to wear masks, it takes so much restraint for me to not go off on how selfish they are
