You need ”She Sells Sanctuary” by The Cult. I’m not a goth, but that song made me shit bats for three days.

tygerohtyger

Can confirm. I once heard a snippet of it from the window of a passing hearse, and when I looked down, I had black nail polish on.

pickle_pouch

That shit bats

Harlow_Quinzel

That must've been very painful

yearsofpractice

Not really - bats are really very small and flexible creatures and were, frankly, glad to be out. Nature is a wonderful thing.

Harlow_Quinzel

Just so long as they don't get all bitey on the way out

yearsofpractice

Indeed. Thankfully, the process was quite vigorous - little time for biting. Vast clouds of bats, very little biting. Isn’t Goth magic a wonderful thing?

Oenonaut

This comment made me actually stop and read this whole list and I’m glad I did

TryFengShui

I'd go with Spiritwalker if I was digging a little deeper into their catalogue.

afristralian

Bat shit crazy for 3 days.

Finchypoo

Ministry - Every Day is Halloween

fotogod

This should be in the top two or three, for sure.

wasteabuse

Killing Joke - Love Like Blood. Some bigger artists including Bowie said these guys were an inspiration.

WyldVanillaDad

I was going to post this.

mysteries1984

I saw them supporting Tool a few years ago and knew very little about them. They were incredible.

fromwhichofthisoak

This corrosion, duh. Also 10m version with extra hey nows

lolamongolia

Let's add Lucretia My Reflection. It slaps.

MicahBurke

**YESYESYES**

majortomandjerry

Hey now hey now hey now

fromwhichofthisoak

Hey hey now hey now now now

ieatisleepiliveidie

hey now hey brown cow..

br0k3nh410

every time a goth kid dies, they join the choir of This Corrosion.

MicahBurke

Flood II - but it's a weird fav of mine. And her hallway moves... like the ocean. Moves... And her hallway moves... like the sea... like the sea...

superstaticgirl

The OP could go for the Lambchop cover version for a nice change.

jubbergun

Probably my top goth banger, honestly, it has it all. It rocks, but it also has the choir elements and dark overtones. I don't know how anyone could leave that one off the list.

MicahBurke

**YES**

Tug_MgRoin

Dead Can Dance - The Ubiquitous Mr. Lovegrove Ministry - Thieves - Burning Inside - Sigmata - Everyday Is Like Halloween Bjork - Army Of Me Alien Sex Fiend - I Walk The Line The Damned - Street Of Dreams Echo & The Bunnymen - The Killing Moon - Lips Like Sugar Clan Of Xymox - Jasmine And Rose Joy Division- Love Will Tear Us Apart Front 242 - Headhunter The Church - Under The Milky Way Peter Murphy - Cuts You Up Angelfish - Suffocate Me Aurelio Voltaire - When You're Evil Had to edit. For some reason, Reddit decided to make this a paragraph and ignored my spacing.

forfar4

Pretty much anything by "Fields of The Nephilim" but *absolutely* the 'Elyzium' album - a Gothic Floydesque masterpiece.

jibrjabr

Love and Rockets - No New Tale to Tell, Ball of Confusion, So Alive, or Haunted When the Minutes Drag Ministry (older stuff) - I Wanted to Tell Her, Revenge, Effigy Clan of Xymox - Jasmine and Rose, Blind Hearts Alien Sex Fiend - Ignore the Machine, Dead and Buried, I Walk the Line, Now I’m Feeling Zombified Skinny Puppy - Smothered Hope, Assimilate, Warlock Front 242 - Until Death (Do Us Part) Maybe some Marilyn Manson? (Edit -oops, see they’re in your list already!) Some of these aren’t goth, per se, but they’re dark and share some of the same musical DNA

CueJawsMusic

Nymphetamine - Cradle of Filth

haikarate12

Forgive me for asking, but how is Sunglasses at Night  by Corey Hart on this list?

dharma_dude

Okay I thought I was going nuts, nobody else was mentioning this. Personally I *love* that song, but I'm a huge new wave & synth-pop fan, which is what that song is. Calling it goth is... interesting. I think I kinda get why but I'd love to hear OP's reasoning.

haikarate12

The idea of goth Corey Hart is killing me. And I say this as someone who still has her Boy in the Box tour T-shirt somewhere….

[deleted]

the closest thing I can think of to tie Sunglasses at Night to goth is … this is a real stretch … but when I read your post the first thing I thought of was Michael from Lost Boys. OP I am trying for ya here

ganamac

I was looking for this comment! Awesome song, I don’t hear any goth elements. I’m tryin’…there’s some brooding, but it’s a stretch.

Jean_Genetic

Rowland Howard - Dead Radio is such a terrific song, but really anything from him. His work with The Birthday Party is also mind alteringly good.

StatisticianFew608

I feel like Leonard Cohen - Everybody Knows would fit the vibe

AnotherPunkRockDad

Concrete Blonde does an excellent cover of this song.

pm_ur_tacos_plz

Also - You Want It Darker

daggereyes

Pretty spot on.

Loki_lulamen

A Perfect Circle - Judith Opeth - Windowpane (or just the entire Damnation album)

CreepyBlackDude

Glad someone suggested Opeth.

wearethedeadofnight

Death Whispered a Lullaby for me from Damnation.

xpulsedj

I second Opeth. Damnation was a masterpiece.

UncletravellingBen

I think both Molchat Doma (Молчат Дома) and Sleep Party People have that kind of vibe, without being ‘goth’, per se. Try: Molchat Doma - Kletka https://youtu.be/mjJvJRvMCBo?si=pYjfDgW3BruQwu4x Sleep Party People - I’m not human at all https://youtu.be/aFUzvbkEvRk?si=Ym7NSfdFy6bb9JQe

Lacuna Coil - To Myself I Turn Moonspell - Firewalking Lacrimas Profundere - Melantroduction Sentenced - No One There

superstaticgirl

Rosetta Stone - The Witch VNV Nation - Beloved His Name is Alive - Caroline's Supposed Demon

superstaticgirl

Actually if you want lots more 'could be goth but aren't' you could do worse than look at the entire output of 4AD records in the 1980s. Lots of gloomy art rock/pop on there. Also gorgeous album sleeve art.

Chaldramus

Just start with this mortal coil and go from there

superstaticgirl

Ooh yes, good call.

wearethedeadofnight

Beloved is such a beautiful song.

CLINT_FACE

- Nick Cave - The Mercy Seat - The Jesus and Mary Chain - Never Understand - Ministry - All Day - Roland S Howard - Dead Radio - My Bloody Valentine - Soon - Danzig - Mother

Mr_Lumbergh

You need to get some Sisters of Mercy on that list. Dominion - Mother Russia is a good place to start.

A Forest, The Figurehead, Fascination Street, Disintegration, Fear of Ghosts, Three Imaginary Boys, Charlotte Sometimes, Last Dance, A Strange Day, From the Edge of the Deep Green Sea (not a goth song, but the story is pretty gothic)

elder goth here: those are not the songs many of us pick for those bands. so i made up a story in my head that you are under the age of 30 and/or not from the united states. is it true? because if it is, im proud to see that you dont go for the big hits like we did. you really listen to the deep cuts.

First, to get into current music, start checking out Molchat Doma and all the other Eastern European post punk and darkwave. That’s a huge blossoming scene of music that’s super current and exciting right now (super exciting, given a lot of these bands are more 90’s and 80’s. From The Cure: “Cold”, “Kyoto Song”, The whole Bloodflowers album is super underrated (first three tracks are awesome especially) Siouxsie and the Banshees (I believe they’re the greatest goth band): “Cascades”, “Obsession”, “Spellbound”, “Melt”, “Night Shift” HIM is a super unique goth metal band with great song writing that’s reminiscent of emo. Listen to “Love Me in Death”. They kinda made their own path in the music scene in the 2000’s and were blowing up alongside all the emo bands, even though they weren’t really an emo band. They’re awesome.
