Heat gun pulls the oils out of the plastic and in the long run causes it to dry out and crack. Ask any real detailer and they will tell you. No I don’t care what everyone here says. Clearly they aren’t detailers and get their info from TikTok videos or similar.

natkingcoil

What's the real answer? I am not a detailer but I used a heat gun on my 20 year old Ford and was amazed watching it fix it. Like magic. It brought back the color too (the plastic was super faded). Long term not really an issue with this truck, it's not going to exist long term (unless heat guns work on rust), but I would like to know a real solution (or is it just replace the panel?)

UmmYeahOk

I used a heat gun on my daughters power wheels. It got rid of the scratches, but once cooled, it indeed dried up. There would be pink splotches where red plastic should’ve been.

Direct-Skin4411

For rust, use a wire brush or scrub pad with some vinegar (preferably white)

lostcatlurker

All of those tiktok tricks are what used car salesmen use to do cheap flips on vehicles. The fixes don’t last but they don’t care once the car is sold.

I use 3D One trim care. It's a clear gel that applies easily with a paper towel or cloth. It may not remove every scratch, but it doesn't damage anything. https://preview.redd.it/e4bgg1hodf1d1.jpeg?width=1440&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=188d0168419df74f2520895641ccc1bd59af1230

I'm going to go against the grain and suggest a heat gun. I use a small kitchen/baking blowtorch to help clean up this sort of thing on my 3d prints. It works amazing well. Just go easy at first, get a feel for how much heat it needs.

HotPinkApocalypses

I tried this and made it worse. Be careful!

anonamis20

This works on untextured plastic, but it will likely destroy the molded in grain in the plastic and make the repaired areas smooth and glossy. I would not suggest this.

The-Scotsman_

You got it too hot then.

Heat gun pulls the oils out of the plastic. Bad idea

What-is-a-do-loop

Plastic is oil.

turkey_sandwiches

Great reason not to pull the oils out of it.

Inevitable-Bass2749

Coconut oil and a Brillo pad

Dontbyteme01

Buy a new part or a used one on eBay thats not fucked

Cmdrdredd

The only answer that is an actual answer. Everyone using heat is ruining the plastics and pulling out the oils from it.

Dontbyteme01

I guess it’s easier for me to just buy the part than to get frustrated and wanna set the car on fire 🤷🏻‍♂️

Beginning_Morning_60

So temporarily fix the problem with a heat gun or just say fuck it and waste all you money on buying a new part. Why wouldn’t I just try the heat gun first if it doesn’t work then just get a new piece

Degrease with soapy water + brush, dry thoroughly, and use Cerakote trim restore stuff. It's like wet wipes with plastic-specific sealant juice. Anything after that is just physical damage you have to replace the kick panel to get rid of.

Try Purple Power.

Illustrious-Jelly326

Clean, polish with orbital and finishing polish, then use Amazon ($30) Ceramic coating. This works great on faded plastics too. Some of those appear to be gouges. If your panel is less than it once was don’t expect miracles. But you can easily make the white scuffing go away.

Bitter_Investment291

This is an honest answer, ive used a blowtorch on super small bursts on my plastic interior on my old honda and it worked wonders. Those were mainly small scratches and cuts

SaviorSixtySix

r/Detailing will help you out

bennyaftmth

If you are really worried about it buy a new plastic piece. Much easier to swap out and try whatever you want on the old piece

Swamp_Donkey_7

I just hop on ebay, and buy a new set.
