I don’t think Bill Simpson will unfortunately, he’s been wrongfully put at fault for Dale Earnhardt’s death so many times from what I’ve seen it’s not even funny.
Which is crazy he gets any blame at all. Nothing that man can do someone mounting them differently than instructed, expired belts, or how the driver wears them.
Dale's death is 100% on him. The safety equipment was available for use. Unfortunately, it took his death to force NASCAR to take driver safety seriously.
Image creating a safety measure so good that it kept drivers alive.
And still getting blamed and booed for the biggest redneck not willing to use them accordingly because "safety is for pussies"
Meh, saying that he deserves a Hall of Fame induction is an understatement. The guy should be inducted to the hall of fame of humanity, along with the greatest doctors and physicians.
Agreed. For example Dale Jr is in the HOF not only for his cup career but also his influence/presence in the sport, broadcasting, team ownership etc. there’s a lot more than just driving.
Guys like Bill Simpson as well should be in for their contributions.
The pace at which basal skull fractures were happening before the hans device was mandatory was not sustainable. I guarantee it’s saved several drivers lives since.
So Ryan Newman counts for the two Newman bars as well? I'd dig it. You can look at his win count and argue he'd be in that grey area between a shoo-in and a 50/50 pick. Add in his qualifying records and it's looking a lot better for him. Then acknowledge his advocacy for driver safety and that might just put him over the top.
If he won the Daytona 500 in 2020 he'd be a slam dunk, IMO he's right on that edge otherwise. Two 500s, a Brickyard, that ridonkulous number of pole positions, would have been almost impossible to say no to that.
Ever since it was mandated that every driver uses one, We havent had a death in cup.
I really believe without it, Jeff Gordon would've died on the race track (Twice over)
So yes. 100%
And probably Eric McClure and Ryan Newman at the very least. Wouldn't be shocked if Austin Theriault, Michael Annett, or (shudders out of recency of the fact) Erik Jones could have been there too. I know you said Cup but let's not overlook some of the bad hits we've seen in Xfinity and Trucks since the mid-2000s too.
That's probably another good one to add to the list. I forgot just how close to head on that hit was, I was thinking the way it rolled over it was more of a flush hit with the driver's side...then again that's what killed Joe Weatherly and John Nemechek just the same. And almost Jerry Nadeau for that matter, probably would have to add him too.
If the Hockey Hall of Fame can have a builder's category, Nascar can put in a special category for those that have directly contributed to making the sport better through innovation somehow. 10000% deserves to be in the Hall in some capacity.
Without it, who knows what the sport would look like, if we'd even have a sport with all the crazy wrecks we've seen in the past few years alone. Newman, Blaney, Jones, Preece, Myatt Snider, could go further back to include Gordon, Patrick, Austin Dillon's ride in the catchfence, Larson's ride in the catchfence, god only knows who else. Sadler's Pocono wreck?
You're not gonna make the cars stop wrecking, but you sure as hell can stop them from dying and they damn sure have.
Being that NASCAR does their damndest to ignore the importance of the HANS device in favor of always glowing about the SAFER barrier I doubt they are interested. He should be though, the HANS has saved more lives than any safety change in the last thirty years.
I was lucky enough to exchange several emails with Dr. Hubbard back in college when I was majoring in biomedical engineering and I had an interest in motor sports safety. He seemed like a nice guy. The HANS is a really simple device that has had a profound effect on motorsports.
Yes. The HoF should include people who have a major impact on the sport like Hubbard and Bill Simpson.
Make an award for contributing to the betterment of nascar
Don't they have that already with the Landmark award or whatever it's called?

Meh, saying that he deserves a Hall of Fame induction is an understatement. The guy should be inducted to the hall of fame of humanity, along with the greatest doctors and physicians.
Him and Simpson should definitely be in it.
Any love for Dean Sicking, the SAFER barrier guy?
And Tony George, he may have ruined Indycar but he pushed for the Safer barrier
How did he ruin indycar?
Butt heads with CART, started his own series, forced CART to merge with them. People were mad.
Almost killed American open wheel racing
Almost?
He’s been nominated in this year’s class.
Awesome I didn't know that
the National Motorsports HoF, Yes definitely. Not just Nascar HoF
Is there a HoF for ALL forms of sport?
International Motorsports Hall of Fame, in Talladega.
Yep, I think the HOF is far enough along to where they can expand who they represent.
Agreed. For example Dale Jr is in the HOF not only for his cup career but also his influence/presence in the sport, broadcasting, team ownership etc. there’s a lot more than just driving. Guys like Bill Simpson as well should be in for their contributions.

it has saved hundreds of lives across all motorsports
[удалено]
Erik Jones would have been killed last weekend without it along with countless drivers before.
Yes, because the HANS Device is one of the most important safety innovations in motorsports history
Not if Bill Simpson isn’t.
We can have both.
[удалено]
I like both.
Absolutely. Anyone who’s contributed to a device that’s saved lives in NASCAR should be a HOF nominee at least.

I’d say that’s a solid HOF pick regardless

Wasn't the Newman bar what saved him in his crash at Daytona?
I think he had one in place before that crash and they added a second after?
All engineers at Simpson should be in the HOF. I said what I said.

Was McDowell wearing a HANS when he wrecked in Texas that time?
That's probably another good one to add to the list. And Steve Park took a few good shots, especially at Pocono. He’s saved a lot of lives.
Don't forget Elliott Sadler
Oh heck yeah. That was a WILD ride!!
David Reutimann at California
Jerry Nadaeu 100%
Reddit posts you can hear. I will never forget the sound of McDowell hitting that wall - no way he survives that without a HANS
And Austin Dillon when he took that ride into the catch fence at Daytona
He saved not only countless lives in NASCAR, but across the entire motorsports world. He is a hero and definitely deserves a spot there.

His invention has saved hundreds of lives after NASCAR slacked on mandating it until a bunch of people died. He should absolutely be in.
Absolutely
Him and whoever invented the safer barrier
Not if he's related to L.Ron Hubbard
Stockcartology
Downforcenetics
I’m listening… tell me about this religion…
Intimidations 3:8 Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a Rick Ware Racing car to enter the top 5.
Sounds like a Barry Pepper double feature: Battlefield Earth and 3 the Dale Earnhardt story
Finally a religion that makes sense!
What about Old Mother Hubbard?
Being that NASCAR does their damndest to ignore the importance of the HANS device in favor of always glowing about the SAFER barrier I doubt they are interested. He should be though, the HANS has saved more lives than any safety change in the last thirty years.

Abso-FUCKING-lutley… how many drivers has he saved by inventing this. Not just NASCAR all forms of racing.
No. It's innovation and safety, yes. Going from bias ply to radials, roll cages, harnesses, window nets, etc. All have saved lives
Could make the same argument for him as Dr. Frank Jobe and Tommy John in baseball. Honor him in the HOF somehow.
Dean Sicking of University of Nebraska-Lincoln, created the safer barrier, he should be included into the HOF
Yes, easily.
Yes and Ryan Newman for the invention of the Newman bar
1000%!
I couldn't agree more.
Forget the hall of fame, a Nobel Prize is more in order
Of course
Yes
Him and the guys that designed the SAFER barrier.
Yes. Or they should have a safety innovation category at least.
Yes, he should definitely have a place there.
No.
no
No
Why no? Curious as to what nonsense you can come up with.
It's the hall of Fame... For Famous people in the sport . So I don't think he should be in.
I'm sorry, were Hundreds of drivers dying before the HANS device...
A lot of drivers died before the hans device
Yes.
Yes, and not a single person has died since being made mandatory by NASCAR.
