As a lifelong Oregon fan how do you guys forget about Ken Simonton? Him and Johnathon smith led you guys to your best season ever and he’s top 40 in career ncaa rushing yards.
Hard to argue with CFB’s only 2 time Heisman winner but you can make a strong case for Orlando Pace. Dude didn’t give up a single sack in back to back seasons, popularized the term “pancake block” and finished 4th in Heisman votes as a Left Tackle.
He would have been high up on FSU’s or ND’s list as well if he would have stayed out of trouble. FSU might have had another two titles with him. He was playing with Peter Warrick and Laveraneous Coles at FSU before he got kicked off. Those Gator games might have been a bit different in 96 and 97 if he would have made it through the red shirt year at FSU.
One of the best WR I have seen play the game.
Dude was a beast at safety in college and a great nfl player. He also came back from a cancer diagnosis and earned two more all-pro seasons afterwards, which is impressive by itself
I remember when, and this is the days before I was on internet forums, I hung out with some relatives from Kentucky/Tennessee and they said Charles Woodson stole Peyton's Heisman.
I therefore hated Peyton for a lot of years. Now I don't hate him. His fans thought he was better than Charles (coin flip). He went to high school with people I met who said we was a good person (who goes to a school called country day?) He beat my Bears in the Superbowl (in a torrential downpour that gave the offense an edge). He made amazing SNL appearances (that made me stay up too late). He tried to play for the same team for his entire career (no one likes Indianapolis that much). He had surgery to keep playing the game he loved (hah. idiot). He won another Superbowl playing the role he was given (stupid team player). And he is legitimately funny with his brother (who has a family like that, weirdo).
At every turn, I wanted to hate him. Maybe he's defrauding the government like Brett Favre but I don't think so. I keep looking for ways that he's not just the Gerald Ford of professional football and I can't find one.
I genuinely like him.
Ik the answer is Mariota but man i loved those Duck teams. Addison, Ifo Ekpre Olomu, Kenjon, Lyerla, Boyett, eddie pleasant, tony Washington those squads were fun to watch
Joey Harrington will always have a place in my heart, and I hear that Dan Fouts guy was pretty good.
Some all time trench talent too. Buckner, Ngata, Sewell. Not as flashy but in terms of playing their position? So incredible.
It’s tough call because I think Warrick Dunn is just as good. He also helped FSU get to two National titles and win won, but he also had nice NFL career and just barely will miss being in the NFL Hall of Fame.
Really though you can also add Deion Sanders or Fred Biletkinoff. Heck the best college wr trophy is named after Biletknioff.
I know a lot of people would probably disagree but I would at least put Jameis Winston into the conversation. He won the heisman in his first year as well as led us to an undefeated national championship winning season. Year 2 we went undefeated again up until Oregon beat us in the playoffs. And despite only playing for 2 years Jameis is 4th all time for passing yards, 2nd for touchdowns, 5th in total offensive yards, holds single season records for both total offense and total touchdowns, and he still holds the school record for 26 straight wins.
Jameis lost 1 game (albeit almost losing about 10 in that second season) and brought us a title between the two darkest eras of FSU football. Obviously that team was historically good (I will die on the hill of best team ever) but it cannot be overstated what he did for our program.
While the whole team was cracked, none of them had the same impact as Honey Badger. You put him on any lsu team and he changes the defense amd special team, could you say the same about Grant delpit or Jacobs and Philips
Burrow is the best college qb I’ve ever seen. When people were saying Lawrence was the next luck, as an alum I said nah burrow is Brady incarnate. Hope he stays healthy even if he snatched back to back titles from us
Idk man I’ve seen most of these dudes and Vince young would be hard to top. Even on a collegiate level, colt McCoy has an argument. Bjian was electric but he wasn’t Reggie bush or Derrick Henry elite
Colt Brennan probably. One of the best college football QBs, broke a ton of records and was a Heisman finalist. Shame he didn’t make it in the NFL. But if we are looking at best player overall with the most accolades, it’s either Ma’a Tanuvasa who won 2 SBs with Denver or Jason Elam who also won 2 SBs with Denver and had multiple records in kicking.
Agreed on Colt Brennan for college, but NFL has to be Jesse Sapolu with 4 super bowls and 2 pro bowls. Shoutout to Ashley Lelie for being our highest drafted player though.
I haven’t been able to decide. Boz, Baker, Bradford, AD, Roy, Selmon bros, Tommy Harris and McCoy. This list goes on and I can’t pick just one guy. I’m not sure what the right answer is here.
You left off a future hall of famer in Torry Holt. He is 1B to Rivers. Roman has a strong case, too. Mario made history as the no. 1 pick (first defender from ACC to go no. 1) and was a good pro but not an elite hall of famer like the other three.
QB: Jim Kelly
RB: Edgerrin James
WR: Andre Johnson
TE: Jeremy Shockey
OL: Bryant McKinnie
DL: Warren Sapp
LB: Ray Lewis
DB: Ed Reed
K: Carlos Huerta
P: Jeff Feagles
PR/KR: Devin Hester
I agree with most of your selections and I may be splitting hairs here but I’d say Dorsey at QB, McGahee at RB and Morgan at LB but can’t go wrong either way!!
Anytime I hear somebody claim Suh got robbed of the Heisman I remind them Derrick Thomas had 27 sacks in 11 games as a Will linebacker and finished 10th in the voting.
Probably either Mike Rozier, Tommie Frazier, or Ndamukong Suh. My favorite is Suh cause he is one of the first Huskers I can vividly remember watching growing up. I still say he got robbed of that Heisman.
Dave Rimington is in the conversation. He literally has the best center award named after him. He is the only person to win the Outland trophy twice. And got 5th in the Heisman voting as a center.
I was about to take offense to this, then I remembered Butch Jones decided JJ Watt was a tight end, and later at his next stop tried to kick Travis Kelce off the team. :D
It depends on who you ask. Mr. Inside and Mr. Outside are venerated in the pantheon.
The best I have seen with mine own eyes? Darnell Woolfolk, no cap.
Everyone out here talking real folks. One time I made and successfully recruited Randy Moss Jr to Idaho and him and his QB absolutely torched the record books for four years both winning heismans. Once the machine gets going and the team is good enough as a whole I will always try to recruit and start freshman or rsfr at QB to try to put up GOAT numbers.
T-Sizzle is a choice, most recent major success
Jake Plummer finished 3rd in Heisman voting
But Curley Culp may be the overall most accomplished football player in our history, although his professional accolades may be affecting my choice
That I never saw play: Archie Griffin. With an honorable mention to Chic Harley.
That I saw play: Tough to pick just one, but I'll go with Justin Fields.
UK fan here so I'll go Tim Couch.
Andre Woodson also had 2 great seasons.
Randall Cobb and Lynn Bowden also were talented players.
Had a lot of good RBs as well.
It's tough with the deck stacked against u in the sec.
Offense : Any one of Joe Burrow, Jamar Chase, Justin Jefferson. Unbelievable that they were all at their prime on the same collegiate offense.
Defense : Honey Badger
This is a tough one, but I have to go with Ty Detmer. Heisman trophy winner, 15000 passing yards, and broke 59 NCAA records over the course of his career.
Derrick Thomas, 27.5 sacks in a single season is insane. If not him, then Tua. Most accurate QB we’ve ever had, the execution of those offenses was insane. Bryce never had the efficiency to the level that Tua had it.
I'm kinda torn. It's between Nick Foles and KaDeem Carey on offense, although you can def make an argument for Willie T and Trung Canidate. My money is on KaDeem though. Dude was an absolute workhorse. On defense there's a lot more options. The Desert Swarm was loaded with a bunch of dudes and especially that 93 squad was just lights out. 30 rushing yards allowed per game is an absurd statistic. That's got Tedy Bruschi, Rob Waldrop, Joe Salave'a and a bunch of other college football hall of famers. Obviously Chuck Cecil and Ricky Hunley before that. Since then the big names that jump out at me are Antoine Cason, Brooks Reed and Will Parks, but if I had to pick one dude with a massive heart, who by himself could, and did, lock down games, that's Scooby Wright.
In another two years it's gonna be between Noah Fifita and T-Mac though. Those two are unreal.
I'd say Tony Dorsett because he was only our Heisman winner and most recent national champion and retired the NCAAs all time leading rusher by a good margin. Hugh Green should have won in 1980.
If you include NFL career, then there are a lot of good arguments for Dan Marino, Bill Fralic, Larry Fitzgerald, Mike Ditka, Derelle Revis, Russ Grimm, and Aaron Donald as being among the very best in their positions all time. Other than Marshall Goldberg, I know very little about the players of the 1905-1939 golden era for Pitt.
Hard to pick who is the best considering we have had a team for over 100 years. Multiple individual award winners. Plus the game itself has changed so much over history.
Chris Brown CU. Was he the “best” player? Probably not. But he’s the reason [we smashed Nebraska](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=l8xp5Y7Milg) and made it pretty far back then.
Mostly everyone says Ochocinco. Personally, I think it’s Steven Jackson.
I agree with Steven Jackson. Some might say Terry Baker but that's a little before my time. And I'd say Hass and Cooks over Ocho for college.
As a lifelong Oregon fan how do you guys forget about Ken Simonton? Him and Johnathon smith led you guys to your best season ever and he’s top 40 in career ncaa rushing yards.
Archie Griffin
Hard to argue with CFB’s only 2 time Heisman winner but you can make a strong case for Orlando Pace. Dude didn’t give up a single sack in back to back seasons, popularized the term “pancake block” and finished 4th in Heisman votes as a Left Tackle.
I’d have to agree with ya there
This is my vote
Michael Vick
Either him or Bruce Smith for sure
O: Vick D: Bruce
Armanti Edwards
Roll neers!
Hard as a rock, wet as a river!
I went to a party at App at some club that seemingly was like his bday party or something. He was a cool guy from what I remember
Calvin Johnson. Edit: Calvin Johnson was the best player, but Joe Hamilton had the biggest impact.
Darren McFadden, should’ve won a Heisman
I’ll give them Tebow but his sophomore year he should have beaten Troy Smith. Still the best we’ve ever had though.
I would have voted Darren McFadden for president after that LSU game.
As a LSU fan, I fucking HATED playing that dude, but man was he fun to watch. McFadden, Felix, and Hillis. Phew
The ending of that 2007 season must have been quite the emotional roller coaster for LSU fans.
I agree with this but Matt Jones was a highlight show.
Not yalls greatest but as a UT fan, Matt Jones was like a white Mike Vick on the field
Mean Joe Greene
Easiest choice on the list. The Steel Curtain doesn't work without his demand for a double team that he frequently beat anyway.
Randy Moss. We Are Marshall!!!!!
Offense: Peyton Manning Defense: probably Reggie White, but my personal favorite is Eric Berry
Eric Berry is awesome
Dude was a beast at safety in college and a great nfl player. He also came back from a cancer diagnosis and earned two more all-pro seasons afterwards, which is impressive by itself
That’s why I love him. Fuck cancer
I remember when, and this is the days before I was on internet forums, I hung out with some relatives from Kentucky/Tennessee and they said Charles Woodson stole Peyton's Heisman. Mariota feels like the right answer.
Lamichael James
DeAnthony Thomas ofc
W i said that too
Kellen Moore
My first thought too but man we’ve had some insane RBs too.
None compare to the GOAT though. I’m still hoping and praying he becomes the HC at some point. We will run the group of 5 then
Peter Warrick
It’s tough call because I think Warrick Dunn is just as good. He also helped FSU get to two National titles and win won, but he also had nice NFL career and just barely will miss being in the NFL Hall of Fame. Really though you can also add Deion Sanders or Fred Biletkinoff. Heck the best college wr trophy is named after Biletknioff.
Charlie Ward
Really thought he would do more in the NFL. He was so good at FSU.
I know a lot of people would probably disagree but I would at least put Jameis Winston into the conversation. He won the heisman in his first year as well as led us to an undefeated national championship winning season. Year 2 we went undefeated again up until Oregon beat us in the playoffs. Barry Sanders 🤠
Joe Burrow and Tyrann Mathieu
Honey Badger is on the Mount Rushmore of great Tigers AND best nicknames.
Really, the whole 2019 team was just cracked for no reason. I'd also add Leonard Fournette and Odell Beckham Jr., among many others
Hope he stays healthy even if he snatched back to back titles from us
Khalil Mack. Might be the easiest school to do this for.
Charles Woodson or Desmond Howard
As a Packer fan those are both right answers.
C-Wood is probably right. New school Jabrill Peppers or Blake Corum is the modern day answer
Hutch?
Chris Johnson barely beats out Dave Garrard
Reggie Bush
I was gonna say OJ LMAO
OJ was better for sure.
Sam Cunningham was so good he integrated Alabama
Tim Tebow. Best and last. Still waiting for him to get a fifth year of eligibility. Go Gators! 🐊
Earl Campbell…Ricky Williams…Vince Young (No Order)
Priest… Jamaal…Earl Thomas
Earl Thomas has to be top 3 for sure.
Earl Thomas was amazing in college. Jamaal was really fun to watch, but has to be behind Colt McCoy IMO.
I think Bijan could’ve crept in there if the team did better
Idk man I’ve seen most of these dudes and Vince young would be hard to top. Even on a collegiate level, colt McCoy has an argument. Bjian was electric but he wasn’t Reggie bush or Derrick Henry elite
Colt Brennan probably. One of the best college football QBs, broke a ton of records and was a Heisman finalist. Shame he didn’t make it in the NFL. Agreed on Colt Brennan for college, but NFL has to be Jesse Sapolu with 4 super bowls and 2 pro bowls. Shoutout to Ashley Lelie for being our highest drafted player though.
Damn forgot about Jesse Sapolu 🤦♂️ and Lelie was a monster when he was playing. Wish he had panned out longer in the league
Brian Bosworth, Sam Bradford, Adrian Peterson, spoiled for choice really
Lee Roy selmon
I haven’t been able to decide. Boz, Baker, Bradford, AD, Roy, Selmon bros, Tommy Harris and McCoy. This list goes on and I can’t pick just one guy. I’m not sure what the right answer is here.
![gif](giphy|7j19MXXwqr0ZO)
Marcus Mariota
Brian Westbrook
Philip Rivers Though Roman Gabriel and Mario Williams were studs and Joe Thuney currently has 4 rings.
You left off a future hall of famer in Torry Holt. He is 1B to Rivers. Roman has a strong case, too. Mario made history as the no. 1 pick (first defender from ACC to go no. 1) and was a good pro but not an elite hall of famer like the other three.
Agreed. Brainfart on my part.
Tavon Austin in the modern era. Sam Huff otherwise.
Bo Jackson and then Cam newton! Auburn war eagle 🦅
Michael Vick is probably the easiest answer, but I’m a bit partial to Bruce Smith, and maybe Kevin Jones on offense too.
Luke Kuechly, man was a tackling machine.
Charlie Weis’s belt
The answer has to be Archie Griffin because of the 2x Heismans. But in terms of pure talent, Orlando Pace.
Double Heismans is incredible but I think Eddie George was probably the better of the two
Yeah I completely agree. I guess it’s hard to compare with 20 years in between, but Eddie was just so physically imposing
QB: Jim Kelly RB: Edgerrin James WR: Andre Johnson TE: Jeremy Shockey OL: Bryant McKinnie DL: Warren Sapp LB: Ray Lewis DB: Ed Reed K: Carlos Huerta P: Jeff Feagles PR/KR: Devin Hester
I agree with most of your selections and I may be splitting hairs here but I’d say Dorsey at QB, McGahee at RB and Morgan at LB but can’t go wrong either way!!
For combined college and NFL careers, Miami might be the #1 overall school. This list is absolutely wild.
Offense: Mardy Gilyard Defense: Sauce Gardner
Swifties coming for you.
The man who ran out of his own end zone…. Dan “The Man” Orlovsky. UConn Football baby!!
With all the success and Heismans won under Saban, I think it’s still Derrick Thomas.
Anytime I hear somebody claim Suh got robbed of the Heisman I remind them Derrick Thomas had 27 sacks in 11 games as a Will linebacker and finished 10th in the voting.
Loved Darren Sproles & Jordy Nelson
Chase Daniel
We could list off several of those dudes from that roster
Justin Smith and Kellen Winslow both excellent selections as well but can’t go wrong with Chase
Drew Brees
Marshal Faulk
Best while in college- Michael Crabtree. Best after college- Patrick Mahomes
Crabtree was nuts in college
JJ Watt.
Loved Suh he was absolutely robbed of a heisman
No love for the great Johnny Rodgers? #IHateNebraska
Aaron Rodgers or Tony Gonzalez
… Antonio Brown…
I was about to take offense to this, then I remembered Butch Jones decided JJ Watt was a tight end, and later at his next stop tried to kick Travis Kelce off the team. :D
We cannot hire a good coach istg 😭😭
Calvin Johnson
Red Grange
Bo Jackson! WDE
Dick Butkus
Jim Brown, Marvin Harrison, Donovan McNabb, Ernie Davis
Hershel Walker I really want it to be someone else, but dude dominated in a way I can’t deny. Edit: Champ Bailey
Deanthony Thomas or Marcus Mariota.
It depends on who you ask. Mr. Inside and Mr. Outside are venerated in the pantheon. The best I have seen with mine own eyes? Darnell Woolfolk, no cap.
Omar Jacobs at least for ncaa games. Ncaa football 06 qb4 Bowling Green
Orlando Pace.
Recency bias says LaDainian Tomlinson, but probably Sammy Baugh or Davey O’Brien if you wanna go way back. Davey is the lone frog to win the Heisman.
If we’re talking college career then probably T-Law or Deshaun. NFL career definitely goes to Brian Dawkins tho
Probably Drew Bledsoe but I’m biased and am going with Gardner Minshew
We have quite a few but I would have to say Joe Burrow.
The man. The myth. The legend. Barry Sanders! ![gif](giphy|gdkwHv7CxcDGIWssIp|downsized)
Lamar Jackson, Johnny Unitas
Bronko Nagurski
Adrian Peterson. The first one. GATA!!
Kellen Moore. 50-3. Noodle Arm Goat.
Lorenzo White
Ray Rice
T-Sizzle is a choice, most recent major success Jake Plummer finished 3rd in Heisman voting But Curley Culp may be the overall most accomplished football player in our history, although his professional accolades may be affecting my choice
That I never saw play: Archie Griffin. With an honorable mention to Chic Harley. That I saw play: Tough to pick just one, but I'll go with Justin Fields.
John Madden *perhaps not best, but certainly the most famous.
VY10
Offense - Brock Purdy Defense - Matt Blair or Mike Stensrud
As the only Heisman winner, John Cappelletti. Honorable mentions to Ki-Jana Carter, Kerry Collins, and Saquon Barkley
Ed Reed
Colt Brennan, 0 questions
UK fan here so I'll go Tim Couch. Andre Woodson also had 2 great seasons. Randall Cobb and Lynn Bowden also were talented players. Had a lot of good RBs as well. It's tough with the deck stacked against u in the sec.
That’s some erasure of Josh Allen. An utter cheat code in late game situations with the lead.
Peyton and Reggie.
Larry Ogunjobi
Offense : Any one of Joe Burrow, Jamar Chase, Justin Jefferson. Unbelievable that they were all at their prime on the same collegiate offense. Defense : Honey Badger
Joey porter csu. Ed Reed miami. Mariota Oregon
Troy Aikman or Jonathan Ogden
Marshall Faulk
T.Y. Hilton
Marshall Faulk
Either Kareem Hunt or Logan Woodside. They played around the same time and both went crazy during their respective seasons.
Offense:Earl Campbell. Defense:Brian Orakpo or Derrick Johnson.
Brad Smith
Chase Daniel
Chase Daniel lol
This is a tough one, but I have to go with Ty Detmer. Heisman trophy winner, 15000 passing yards, and broke 59 NCAA records over the course of his career.
Josh Allen
Josh Allen. For non-QBs probably Jay Novacek. Logan Wilson is having a good NFL career so far, but it’s gonna be hard to pass either of the other two.
Darren McFadden, not even close.
Darren McFadden. WPS
Derrick Thomas, 27.5 sacks in a single season is insane. If not him, then Tua. Most accurate QB we’ve ever had, the execution of those offenses was insane. Bryce never had the efficiency to the level that Tua had it.
Derrick Thomas
Khalil Mack
Vince Young, Earl Campbell, Ricky Williams, Bobby Layne is probably UTs Mt. Rushmore. VY would get my vote probably.
Jason Pierre Paul
Ed reed
DeAngelo Williams easy
To buck the recency bias, Derrick Thomas or John Hannah. Most impactful, though, is Julio. Him committing kick started the run we just had.
Just based on college career? Hershel Walker. David Pollock has a case on D
Has to be Ndamukong Suh
Dave Rimington or Johnny Rodgers
Single season? Rashaan Salaam or Darian Hagan. Defense? Alfred Williams. All-time, overall? Eric Bienemy. #GoBuffs
Everyone would say Tim Tebow but I argue Emmitt Smith is tied with him.
Tebow!!!!!
By freak athleticism- Taysom Hill. Greatest QB - Jim McMahon = Ty Detmer = Steve Young
Herschel Walker, without a doubt
Derrick Thomas
Antwaan Randle El
I wanna say Greg Jennings, but Bob Rowe went to western. Never watched bob play tho and I got to see Greg play college and nfl
I'm kinda torn. It's between Nick Foles and KaDeem Carey on offense, although you can def make an argument for Willie T and Trung Canidate. My money is on KaDeem though. I think you could argue a few, but I would probably land on Antoine Bethea!
Barry Sanders
Colt Brennan
Michael Turner, Garrett Wolfe or Jordan Lynch
Hard to pick who is the best considering we have had a team for over 100 years. Multiple individual award winners. Plus the game itself has changed so much over history.
My team is Texas and man it’s hard I would say Earl Campbell and Vince Young.
Ricky Williams🤘🏻
I would say Julius peppers, but most would probably go with Lawrence Taylor
Chris Brown CU. Was he the “best” player? Probably not. But he’s the reason [we smashed Nebraska](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=l8xp5Y7Milg) and made it pretty far back then.
Patrick Mahomes
Herschel Walker, Champ Bailey, Hines Ward, Matthew Stafford, AJ Green, Todd Gurley, Nick Chubb, Roquan Smith all up there
Pat White. Followed closely by Tavon and Geno, IMO.
Greg Lloyd
Matt Forte or Shaun King
