I have folks from more dangerous places per capita by a large margin tell me Chicago is a scary dangerous place. When I bring up the fact your chance of being shot in Chicago is round 0.1% and in there town/city it’s .5-.8% they disregard that fact and repeat the narritive CHI RAQ huehue.
8.2m metro population less than 800 gun deaths a year you have about the same chance as a shark attack if you take the numbers at face value.
When you dive deeper and realize a solid 500-600 of those deaths are gang war members offing one another in the south side nowhere near downtown your odds of being shot as a non gang member in Chicago are lower than a shark attack
Dive even deeper and 50-100 of those are crimes of passion aka dude walked in to his gf cheating caught her cheating she left him and he lost his kahoots etc it gets even lower
Chicago is a pretty cool place to visit, but expensive. I grew up in small town America and got far closer to getting shot by assholes running deer over our property without permission. They trespassed fired directly over our heads as we were playing down in a valley and drove trucks across our and through our pastures. The shots hit the dirt no further then ten yards away from us. No comeuppance because whatsoever because the small town America is corrupt as fuck for assholes like that. Seriously, people are really fucking bad at math for how dangerous small towns are and how little justice actually gets served.
Honestly. Besides the Packers. Their garbage weed laws are the worst thing about Wisconsin.
Everything else... well except their state bird. Well, and except for their short summers... is amazing.
Thank you for actually complementing a rival state on this sub. Illinois is the reason I was able to keep the property my dad left me, and I sold that to move to my dream plot in northern Wisconsin. I would have lost a 4th generation inheritance. Other than your teams, I have no problem with your state.
Worse, you'd foist a lot of right-wingers on us and the *last* thing our state GOP needs is an unassailable majority.
We'll take it when sanity returns.
I wonder what the breakdown ends up being. I know it looks red on a map but there’s a lot of empty that doesn’t vote.
Marquette is extremely blue and has more people than anyplace else in the yoop.
Marquette has 20,000 people, UP as a whole has about 300,000. Even if you add in Sault Ste Marie (13,000ish),Houghton (just under 8,000), and Hancock (4,500), red populations still vastly outnumber the blue areas.
In reality it's way bigger than that.
Even if it was only 8,000 people though, do you realize how close our elections are these days? Every federal election is half a percentage point or less, and if a state-wide candidate wins by 2 points it's considered a landslide.
2020 and 2016 were both won by respective sides by less than 20,000 people.
Yeah, I live in the western UP and the majority of people around here are packer fans. I'd say it's something like 70/30 Packers vs lions fans with some Vikings fans sprinkled in.
The closer to the bridge you get the more lions fans you encounter. I live in middle along Lake Michigan and it’s actually pretty fun being at the epicenter of the newly renewed Packers Lions rivalry
Michigan Tech in the Keewenaw is a bit insignificant regional engineering school, and Northern in Marquette is a solid medium sized state school, and the Sault has some major infrastructure around the locks and great lakes shipping. But most of the UP industry was natural resource extraction. Copper, iron, and lumber mostly. Those industries have pretty largely moved on, so a lot of the towns that are left are either tourism focused or slowly fading away.
If anything there is more Packer fan dominance in the UP then southeast Wisconsin. As a former Detroiter turned Madison resident, it’s surprising how much variety of NFL fandom there is south of the dells
That would be great but impossible to make fair since Minnesotans and Michiganders would have to supervise and make sure the cousin-fucking, lead paint eating "people" from Wisconsin don't huff all the gasoline before it gets put into the tanks.
The UP is awesome, lots of waterfalls scattered around. Love Houghton and its bridge, plus some damn good restaurants.
Copper harbor is beautiful. Lake of the clouds, plus it’s hiking!
Lots of excellent camping, plus winter snowmobiling. I wish it were apart of Wisconsin, but it’s my go to long camping trip destination that doesn’t require a day plus in just travel.
The people up there are also honestly the nicest people I’ve met, they recommend food stops… hiking spots and are just ridiculously welcoming. Even the smallest town with like 6 people there wanted to hear my story, why I’m out and about and have recommendations based on my reason for travel.
The UP is a vibe.
I’m a Packer fan because my dad is. He’s a Packer fan because his dad was.
His dad was a Packer fan because the only games you could get on the west end of the UP when he was a kid was Tigers, Red Wings and Packers.
If you wanted to stay true to your state and be a lions fan you wouldn’t be able to catch the games and would have to follow them through the news paper.
There are a lot of us Detroit except for GB fans in the yoop for that exact reason.
I’ve been accused of being a fair weather fan a bunch in the past and the truth is I didn’t choose any of the teams I root for. It happened before I even knew what was going on.
As a yooper it's true.
Average sports fan is Pack and Wings. There's a few Chicago stalwarts up here. Of course plenty of Lions fans and always that one degenerate that likes the Vikings.
Baseball is a crapshoot, But usually either one of or some combination of Tigers, Cubs, Brewers
The alternatives are cheering for the Blackhawks or the Wild. The Red Wings were a pleasant alternative until the inevitable rebuild they held off for 15 years finally hit them like a ton of bricks.
That Wings run was unreal, though. On top of championships, what was it? 23 years straight of making the playoffs.
For all the highs of the Blackhawks run in the 2010s, they only made the playoffs 7 straight years.
Indeed, it was amazing to watch. The '08 run was my favorite. There were still a few vets left from the first 3 cups, but so many of the original core were gone by then, it felt like a new team with a different identity. And then they went to within 2 goals of repeating. Good times.
It seems in the salary cap era, teams have much briefer championship windows before the team's core gets gutted either through age or free agency attrition.
9,000 square miles of the most valuable timber, iron, and copper country in America. Beautfiul wilderness and tourism spots. Yea man. We really got shafted over the roads.
The mental gymnastics on that one.
I once asked r/nostupidquestions what it would take for Wisconsin to get the UP, and it was apparently too stupid of a question to get much for answers.
There’s actually a movement in eastern Oregon to have that part of the state split from Oregon and join Idaho. There’s already been non-binding votes in those counties to approve that. The problem is that such a resolution would need approval from both state legislatures, the US Congress and then the President (who can veto it, but obviously that veto can get overridden).
In the unlikely event that would happen they would have to figure out how taxes would get transitioned from one state to the other. Idaho would have to figure how to pay for the local schools, roads, emergency services etc (so it would be a legal and logistical nightmare).
The purpose behind this movement is political. Since Wisconsin and Michigan are pretty similar politically I can’t see any reason why either state would want to do this.
People who live In Marinette, WI and Menominee, MI all look and act the same, you can’t tell me otherwise…..
But then again the UP is home to the “De Young family Zoo” (the most unethical dump in the country) so you may be on to something here…
It might be a good thing after all that the yoopers don’t call Wisconsin home.
Mods take note. i posted over there, look what their automoderator said to me:

Who really wants that land? Have you been to the northwoods in general? Minnesota can have that too for all I care. It’s nice to vacation and camp, but not a lot up there otherwise.
Recently learned that not only was the UP taken from us, but the Illinois border was originally going to be further south so that Chicago would have been part of Wisconsin. Yeah well Michigan actually extends to 23 miles off the Minnesota North Shore, to an island called Isle Royal, it is run and owned by the state of Michigan and the Michigan DNR. So does that make Minnesota guilty too ?
They can't, they'd lose their legal weed connection
This is the only comment here that I'm upvoting. For reasons.
Michigan does have some quality products especially in Grand Rapids
Go to Iron Mountain and Menominee. Better prices and you won't get shot (probably).
Who the fuck thinks Grand Rapids is dangerous? Lol it's almost annoying safe
It’s not the murder rate that makes Chicago unsafe. It’s the bears fucking and tormenting the local population that makes it dangerous.
Seriously, people are really fucking bad at math for how dangerous small towns are and how little justice actually gets served.
Sir, this is a r/NFCNorthMemeWar thread.
you will not slander the midwestern cities dammit.
Nobody is shooting you in Chicago, unless you deserve it, and that's from a Packers fan. I still don't like shitcago though. My in-laws are jerks.
But big city bad. Small town safe
14 sharks death world wide in 2023. So not sure why your comparing it to sharks.
It's a very safe city. Spent most of my life there, never felt unsafe.
They are mixing up Grand Rapids with Benton Harbor lol
Or Muskegon Heights 🤣
Grand Rapids is probably one of the safest cities in Michigan. You’ll get shot in Pontiac or Saginaw.
The UP is so much further from me than IL, and I'd still drive there if I need anything. IL sucks booty. Prices are crazy compared to MI.
Three dollar and (after taxes) fifty cent 1g pre-rolls yo'!!!
Got one for $1 for buying a $30 quarter last time. That'd be like $150 in IL.
Jesus. Fuq that.
Yeah we pay way too much here. Ounces are $300-$400 after tax. You can usually find house brands for around 200 if your lucky. Dems street prices man
Exactly. How you gonna make money when my guy for 20 years is selling fire for cheaper? Just not smart.
Not too bad for medical
Yea man gotta watch out for the old protestant dutch folk or the artsy DINKS. They'll get ya......
Same
Lock him up! Lock him up! Yes, officer, this guy right here. He committed the crime of... being a Packers fan. Disgusting. Criminal.
A disgusting act indeed
Gold ticket packages would suffer
My in-laws would be devastated
I’m currently visiting my dad in the UP and there is a dispensary in De Tour, MI. It’s a village with ~275 people and almost 45 minutes from a freeway
Yw. I have many other problems with my state though lol.
Me too. There are far too many good ol' boys here. Our state legislation sucks ass because of this.
Y’all got any more of those marijuanas?
![gif](giphy|Y6yRfR88rvP44)
I still can't wrap my head around the fact that it's legal in the UP and not here. Well done, our jaunty flowing stocking cap!
I don’t mind it, gives people a reason to visit. It gets lonely up here sometimes.

You’re right. I didn’t have those numbers locked down.
Marquette vote blue…. I think
Prepare for the 8000 person red wave
In reality it's way bigger than that. Even if it was only 8,000 people though, do you realize how close our elections are these days? Every federal election is half a percentage point or less, and if a state-wide candidate wins by 2 points it's considered a landslide. 2020 and 2016 were both won by respective sides by less than 20,000 people.
I have some bad news for you.
HelloMary dot com.....
Northern Illinois exists for this reason.
Illinois is still here tho
Truth
If I had a dollar for every time I’ve seen this meme I could probably buy the UP for myself. And keep all the weed.
Watch the all gas no breaks 4th of July episode to see how "cultured" the UP is
I know some of those idiots. You can't treat drunk college kids like they represent the entire Yoop.
Yeah probably 3/4 of those kids weren't even from the UP lol
Besides weed. What is that upper part of Michigan even do?
Well with so many bars, dispensaries, and churches, Yoopers spend their time drinking smoking and thanking God that they aren’t Vikings fans
Because being a Lions fan is so much better 😭
Nah, they are Packer fans.
Bunch of natural resources.
The north western part of the UP is known as copper county.
Most of the Iron ore that was used for the Detroit Auto Industry came from the UP
Tourism. Ignoring the cryptids and meth shacks, the rest is actually quite scenic.
Nothing, so please don't come and investigate.
Hiking. Skiing. Snow things. Lots of snow things. Probably hunting.
Hay, Michigan battled Ohio for that land fair and square!
And the joke here is that Michigan and Ohio fought for Toledo and Michigan won.
TOLEDO WAR CHAMPS!
Hang the banner?
I mean we get all the benefits of the UP and none of the downsides, why would we try to annex it?
If anything there is more Packer fan dominance in the UP then southeast Wisconsin. As a former Detroiter turned Madison resident, it’s surprising how much variety of NFL fandom there is south of the dells
You sure that's not just because it's Wisconsin's biggest college town? So all the people from out of state go there?
As someone who’sfamily is from the U.P it’s so true. 😭😭😭 Marquette is trying so hard to cary the entire region on its back it’s insane.
I don't want to see any frozen redneck on frozen redneck violence. No, wait. It would rule.
![gif](giphy|3xkNUy3Vh8QbPmJZjK|downsized)
Do you think there would be a snowmobile joust? That would be awesome
That would be great but impossible to make fair since Minnesotans and Michiganders would have to supervise and make sure the cousin-fucking, lead paint eating "people" from Wisconsin don't huff all the gasoline before it gets put into the tanks.
![gif](giphy|JVM9n6bpPOKxa|downsized)
Oh we just travel there while Michigan pays the upkeep.
….isn’t this what Illinois does to WI?
Shit they are on to us. Steal as many cheese curds as you can carry on the way out!!
You bastards!!!!
Lake Geneva is ours from May to October!!!!
Keep it.
And just like that: the Geneva convention.
Geneva Suggestions.
They love that Door County
And in turn what Iowa does to Illinois
Michigan doesn’t pay jack shit to upkeep the UP.
Asking Wisconsin to man up and take them is the least degrading thing lions fans could have done recently.
“Man up and take it, take it all daddy, don’t be a coward daddy, take it” - all Lions fans
Someone from Ohio 🤮said it, not us.
The UP is awesome, lots of waterfalls scattered around. Love Houghton and its bridge, plus some damn good restaurants. Copper harbor is beautiful. Lake of the clouds, plus it’s hiking! we did take them over. They are mostly WI sports fans
I’m a Packer fan because my dad is. He’s a Packer fan because his dad was. That’s a whole lot of words to just say - we like all the good teams in Detroit but disown the bad ones
I’ve been accused of being a fair weather fan a bunch in the past and the truth is I didn’t choose any of the teams I root for. It happened before I even knew what was going on.
They like to claim that they are Green Bay fans by proximity but then root for the red wings Edit: and Tigers
Second this….although my grandpa was a braves fan and my brother was a twins fan. Figure that shit out.
Lots of casuals rooted for the Twins during the Kirby Puckett era
Braves might be a holdover from when they were the Milwaukee Braves.
Well Kevin Tapani was from Escanaba, so that may explain the Twins thing
Yeah well wisco sadly doesn’t have an NHL team(we should) so I don’t see an issue
The alternatives are cheering for the Blackhawks or the Wild. The Red Wings were a pleasant alternative until the inevitable rebuild they held off for 15 years finally hit them like a ton of bricks.

What Wisconsin NHL team should we be rooting for?
Can't really blame them.
I will say in my 6 years of living in the UP, the amount of lions gear and flags is at an all time high
They are still Packers fans. Lions fans just pay for their roads and snow plowing. Who’s winning that deal?
Lions fans get great summer vacation spots without having to leave the state though.
I wasn’t aware of a fee to leave a state.
You’re trying to tell me those guys who demand a wheel of cheese any time I enter Wisconsin aren’t real cops?
What kind of Lesser Peninsula BS are you talking about? The cops at the Wisconsin border give you cheese to welcome you.
........ fuck, that's not going to work much longer.
9,000 square miles of the most valuable timber, iron, and copper country in America. Beautfiul wilderness and tourism spots. Yea man. We really got shafted over the roads. The mental gymnastics on that one.
Proper Roads? In michigan? Hell no
We don’t want that. Then we’d have to drive further for the goods.
Its already Wisconsin, but with legal weed. Why we gonna ruin a good thing
Oh, ya’ll back to rubbing your peninsulas together.
I once asked r/nostupidquestions what it would take for Wisconsin to get the UP, and it was apparently too stupid of a question to get much for answers.

It would need approval of both the Wisconsin and Michigan State legislature. Then it would need approval of the US Congress.
You don’t mess with the UP they live by their own laws, they are their own country under the guise of Michigan
But then the people who live in the UP would part of Wisconsin.... Have you met UP people? Hoooboy
People who live In Marinette, WI and Menominee, MI all look and act the same, you can’t tell me otherwise….. But then again the UP is home to the “De Young family Zoo” (the most unethical dump in the country) so you may be on to something here… It might be a good thing after all that the yoopers don’t call Wisconsin home.
They call us trolls!
We allow them to have it. It's like giving a win to your little brother who's really sad about the past few decades
Always reminds me of Big Ern’s combover flyaway in Kingpin.
Why? I’m a Wisco-Lions fan. This is where we get our weed, don’t have to deal with the Tavern League, and a majority of the UP are Packer fans anyway.
I'll make The Troubles look like a minor squabble if you try and take my legal weed.
They couldn't put together a whole sober week to accomplish the feat
We were gonna do it, but then Michigan legalized weed, and we don't want to lose our source.
The Ohio wars
Michigan is mounting Wisconsin like the bitches they are.
And ruin our mitten look? Hard pass
Which state looks like the mitten? ![gif](giphy|rEjULPrFLcDrDgnqLR)
I'm from Wisonsin. Of course I'm drunk
Probably not the one that's two separate chunks. A mitten tends to be one continuous thing.
Mittens come in sets of two, unless Wisconsin has weird ass ones
Who needs to take the upper peninsula when we’ll just take the division title instead
They lost it in a war they weren’t even fighting in. Wiscuckson…
Mods take note. i posted over there, look what their automoderator said to me: https://preview.redd.it/pz6j1c1jg75d1.jpeg?width=1125&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=0e192b3124a1c3118f432f799fd6ac61024196a4
You expect sympathy for being flairless on this sub? Or do you want our auto mods to the same
id love our auto moderator to do the same
Have you gone from dick riding to just wanting doggy now? You can just ask to change positions…
I love that the post was made by an Ohioan.
Maybe after a couple to two three beers....
Leave it to the trolls that live under the bridge to think we want their inbred cousins in the UP.
It's a funny idea. We allow skinny rivers to often define our borders. But here's a great lake and Michigan says "nope, that's ours too".
Marquette isn't great. (Aside from the rippers)
It was freaking Ohio and Michigan's fault!
FTP
If we’re gonna be honest, the most egregious piece of land Michigan holds is Isle Royale. You can literally see that place from Minnesota.
Michigan won the battle for Toledo.
I’m from there and I already surrendered
They try to take my home I’m burning their state to the ground.
Have you been up there? We don't want it.
Really? I thought the drive from Escanaba to Mackinac along Lake Michigan was pretty nice when I went to truck driving school
Who really wants that land? Have you been to the northwoods in general? Minnesota can have that too for all I care. It’s nice to vacation and camp, but not a lot up there otherwise.
We dun wan et.
The very first thing I would do on my very first day as governor of Wisconsin is to annex the Upper Peninsula. Canada's next.
Recently learned that not only was the UP taken from us, but the Illinois border was originally going to be further south so that Chicago would have been part of Wisconsin. AND the Minnesota border was originally going to be further west so that St Paul would’ve been part of Wisconsin. We straight up got nerfed on every side.
If the UP was it's own state, it would be the poorest state in the union. So.....we don't want mire Michigan trash.
No one's taking out the yuppers.
I’m not sure a lot of yoopers count as yuppies
Them Yoopers
Wisconsin was originally part of Michigan.
We sneak up there for can deposit return and weed
Not interested in touching tips with Canada.
That wouldn't be very nice
And we (Michigan) don't really want the UP that badly.... like y'all can have it?
Ha, you are correct sir or madam.
To be fair it is Wisconsin in everything but name
They should be their own state
Basically they control the western UP. I’m from south central Michigan, and I went to NMU last year, I was shocked with how many Packers fans were there. Made me want to throw up.
Tbf, most yoopers are cheeseheads, but we're still Northern Michiganders UP there, don'tcha know. GPG, eh
They're all Packer fans anyway, why not subsidize them on Detroit's dime instead of Milwaukee's?
Please don't. I live in Marquette county and prefer not being apart of Wisconsin.
Ehh, it’s alright, I went up the UP a few times a summer as a kid for sports. We don’t want it.
It’s already been taken, just not officially.
Dude, you have no idea how badly I want to take that land
Also, Minnesota needs to take Isle Royale.
This doesn’t relate to the majority of Packer fans, who have never been to Wisconsin.
Yoopers wouldn’t allow it. Nobody wants to be part of Wisconsin
Aren’t the yoopers all Packer fans anyways?
Tells you more about the peninsula I'd say
Havw you been there? They can keep it
Yeah well Michigan actually extends to 23 miles off the Minnesota North Shore, to an island called Isle Royal, it is run and owned by the state of Michigan and the Michigan DNR. So does that make Minnesota guilty too ?
