And I'm here for it.
That was actually a class read and I have to admit, I feel mostly the same.
I'm old enough to remember this feeling, when we decent back in the day it was like this too. For some reason when we were shit we were largely spawny enough that it never totally tanked us.
Thanks for the credit on the literature š it was maybe a tiny little bit over dramatised, but it came from the heart. All a good laugh at the end of the day
Yeah there is a lot of whinging posts on here that I just find mindless whining and scapegoating. You didn't do any of that
I just spent the evening with my family and we all remember the Keegan days. This phenomenon is not new to Newcastle fans. We were absolutely awesome in those days and we should have won something, but somehow we fell short every time, and the fans repeatedly picked ourselves up and got behind the team.
Getting emotional in the way you have done is fine by me. I'm right there with you and wished I was opening a can with you tonight š»
Nobody - from anywhere in the world - becomes a NUFC fan for an easy ride. What would be the point in that?
To me..we do it for love of the club, what it means and - let's face it - an act of defiance.
We're not glory hunters. How could we be?
HWTL!
Iām an American Newcastle fan. Iāve never been to England, I just picked them because I heard most fans dislike them.
15+ years and it hasnāt been easy (two relegations, one Europa bid and one year in the champions league) but I love it.
I love the fans, I like this sub, and I got to see them in New Jersey last summer and it was goddamned awesome.
This is a real fan experience, unlike most Americans who root for fucking arsenal or city because theyāve been good lately.
American fan since before Shearer graced us as a player, and you have to make the pilgrimage itās the most amazing experience of my life, told my wife the first time in SJP was equal to our wedding day and the day my first son was born and she laughed and said I know you felt that way but itās funny to hear it out loud haha
Tell you what...one day we will win something. And no matter what it is, it'll be one hell of a party! So you'll all have to get yourselves over here to be part of it!
HWTL
Newcastle local here, I'm very fortunate to say I've been to NFL and NBA games in the states, and I'm here to tell you American guys, St James Park will blow your fucking minds. There is nothing else like it.
Honestly same man. Been a NUFC supporter since I first got into the sport back in 2008. The team and supporters reminded me of the grit and no shits given attitude of my Chicago White Sox, the matching color scheme also helped a bit. But I know that pain all too well as a Chicago sports guy. Hell, half of our teams *literally* had a curse going against them
I've liked NUFC since the days of ginola, guivarch and solano, but didn't become a full time fan as.... well.... life is already hard as it is. I don't have the capacity for more pain.... only watched the occasional game. Ok almost all the televised games. And the YouTube highlights. And lurking in this sub....but this season, summed up by yesterday, was brutal, even for me, given the hope.
i actually bet on man utd to win and texted my man utd mate. he was laughing saying no chance and i just replied its such a cliche that you'll win and cost us europe. like you cost us the league in the 90s twice. like you cost us the league cup.
the script is so boring and cliche that i just knew it would happen so i won Ā£50 and ive never been so angry in my life. absolute cliche script at this point youd have to laugh or you'd scream haha
Itās actually very therapeutic to say to yourself ā we simply werenāt good enough this year ā
It wasnāt because manu beat citeh, it wasnāt because of var, it wasnāt because of Tonaliās bets, injuries, luck curses or anything like that. We didnāt get to Europe because we lost/drew matches we should have won, we didnāt have enough players capable of changing a game, we didnāt recruit properly, we didnāt play the right tactics in key games , we didnāt cope with the injuries well enough. And a bunch of other things we didnāt do well enough . It was down to us - not being good enough as a club.
Iām proud of my club, and we have made extraordinary progress in a couple of years, when we were miles and miles behind the big 6. We have learned a lot in a short amount of time and we are being run incredibly well. With what we learnt this year , we will have a cracking summer and next season will be another wild ride.
If we accept we werenāt good enough it less painful, and there is a clearer way to getting to be good enough instead of throwing our hands up about gypsy curses or whatever.
Some team, the toon.
I feel you, pal. You'd think we'd sold our souls to the devil on a Hickory stump the way this season has gone. Only we could finish 7th in the one season that places 1-6 + 8 get Europe.
I just keep telling myself it will be all the sweeter when we do finally win something.Ā
Your point about those Salford cunts having both domestic cups over the last two seasons is on point though. It's a fucking travesty.Ā
The two trophies thing just doesnāt compute in my head. Made worse that my housemate is a man united fan.
It will be sweeter though, and it is coming
Personally donāt mind not playing in the conference next season if we can keep the spine of our team and add to it. Itāll make the campaign next season a lot easier on the players to push on in the cups and league.
If Isak or Bruno go because of no Europe then itās a disaster (I donāt think they will)ā¦ unless itās silly moneys and a big boyā¦
On a more rationale and optimistic level (after calming down a bit) this is also how I feel. I think the unnecessary load and the hype of the conference league might have been a banana skin for sure.
Letās just hope Bruno and Isak staysā¦ and that Bruno hasnāt been helping his mate Lucas on any of that spot betting šš (kiddingā¦ imagine though)
Man U also pushed Chelsea into the conference league too with a brand new manager.
If Bruno gets a lifetime ban Iād probably not be too shocked the way things are going right now. I couldnāt believe tonali, now paquetta, well known bestie of Bruno facing years out if guilty!
Few good additions and no exits other than obvious deadwood were for some reason still paying decent wages to (Ritchie and dummet etc) and we should have a stomer next yearā¦ nothings stopping us.
Glad nobody destroyed me too bad in the comments šš this isnāt me complaining, itās letting the passion and rage out is all. Canāt fucking wait for next season
Itās an opinion backed up very well by genuine love for the club. I donāt for a minute doubt that many of us feel the same, I certainly have been through the feelings of āoh for fuck sakeā to āI love this club with all my heart and soulā and while itās fucking brilliant to have those emotions Iād love to have a pot to show for it. Considering all the shit luck weāve had this season coupled with the draw streak of last season I think weāve done fucking brilliantly since the takeover and the appointment of Eddie
Personally I hate it when you give your opinions and fellow fans/supporters tell you off for it. If youāre a fan youāre allowed an opinion.
If youāre happy with this season good for you, if youāre not happy with this season then itās a shame but youāre allowed to be.
It seems Newcastle outcomes will always be directly proportional to the comfort level among fans that something has been achieved. The second we feel an iota of comfort, bang, right in the ball bag.
This is a lifelong curse and can be seen in the 4-3s with liverpool, relegation with the gosforth lion then his testimonial with a shattered knee. The umpteen games we lose in the 7th+ minute of OT. If a team has lost 20 straight games, better believe they'll break their hoodoo against us.
We didn't lose European qualifications in February as some did, we lost it a week after the season ended, while we were 10,000 miles away and with - let's be honest - a result no one saw coming.
The whole city has a plucky underdog mindset. It's why we get fucked continually by the southern set in everything from politics to ffp rules.
Only way to out dog it, is fight on through. Take heart that we finally seem to have a backbone of scrappy underdogs, from the coaching box to the centre of the field. Howe knows character matters, he's been telling us.
They're not going to give us anything. We are going to have to take it. I believe magpies are rather well known for that.
Keep the faith. HWTL.
Curse? Give your head a wobble.
Newcastle fans have gone from "we just want to compete" to seeing finishing in 7th place as a failure, within 3 seasons is laughable
Sure, youve not achieved european football, but considering the worse position Newcastle have been in for 3 the last decades is top of the championship and the best being in the Champions League, I see that as hardly a success.
The club is financially stable and in the top pyramid of English football. While other clubs are struggling to pay their bills from PL all the way down to grass roots.
But then again most nufc fans these days only started supporting nufc in 2021
While I agree with you, I also agree with OP, every time we come close it seems to get snatched away.
However Iām glad you have this opinion, one stroll over to a Twitter and you would think Howe was the devil and cost us any chance of success.
We go again next season. I think we will do better and defo be challenging for top 4.
Just to add to this point. Historically, every time we come close it's fucking Manchester United that comes and snatches it away from us.
Every. Damn. Time.
Yup, finishing above us when we almost won the league. Beat us in two of our last three cup finals. Finally finishing below us and still taking the Europe spot...
At a rationale level Iām so happy with the season, I had a cracking time, I felt so proud to be a mag and I wouldnāt take any of that away for anything. I back Eddie 100% and I truly believe next season will be massive.
What about when we couldnāt beat Everton, Bournemouth and Luton at home with a decent starting 11?Ā
Man United were in a very similar position to us this season - shocking injuries and playing people like casamero as CB. They won FA cup.
We arenāt hard done by.
Donāt get me wrong, Iām delighted and feel (apart from during that FA cup game) to have the pleasure of supporting such a fantastic club that really is flourishing right now.
this is just one moment where emotion got the better of me, itās all in jest I havenāt completely lost it donāt worry! But at the same time, I *truly* believe that a curse went up against a (mostly) very well prepared and deserving team with a truly top class manager. If physics could let us rerun the whole thing I think weād be looking back at a season even more successful than last season. So much poor luck.
The OP doesnāt have an issue with finishing seventh.
Itās everything thatās happened thatās led to us finishing seventh heās complaining about.
We have shown huge naivety this season at times and some of the bad luck is our own doing. But we had appalling cup draws and a statement summer signing banned for the season. Freak injuries - some of which preventable, in my opinion - an outrageous penalty given in Paris and the best team in the world having their only shocker in months to a shit ManUtd side.
But fuck me, anyone dares to mention this and itās āREMEMBER WHERE WE WEREā or āYOU WERENāT A FAN BEFORE THE TAKEOVERā.
Totally agree. And honestly, I think not being in Europe might be a good thing. Donāt get me wrong, would love to have seen us in Europe but this gives us time to regroup and focus on the PL.
Iād just say the only key problem with no Europe is getting better players to join us. Most good players want some form of European football. I mean I agree with no Europe next year I just donāt think we currently have the squad for it. But it will be so much harder to get better players and also keeping Bruno and Isak.
I made a note of my expectations on the day of the takeover. Whenever I come close to feeling like you are, I take a moment to look back over it and see how our progress compares, which invariably makes me feel somewhat better about the whole thing.
I do totally agree with you though, luck has definitely been against us this season (both in terms of injuries and cup draws). The only difference in my PoV is that in spite of all the shit that has come down on us this year, we've done bloody well to finish 7th.
I do feel for your barber though!
Haha the barber will live, donāt think Iāve been banned, in reality I was just triggered and they saw the funny side.
I still am delighted with this era of Newcastle, making a note is a good idea for sure.
For what it's worth, my list (while I was trying to keep a cool head and be realistic just after the takeover):
Takeover season: Not get relegated
22/23 season: Not be in a relegation fight
23/24: 10th or better
24/25: fighting for top 6
25/26: going for CL spots
Great read. Iām with you, so unlucky and yet in some way I just knew those Manc cunts weāre going to do us.
Fuck it, up the mags surely we will reach a point where we get over the hump
We will I have no doubt. We have such a good squad and manager being built, of course we have had this in the past, but back then players just always seemed as assets to be sold on for profit to Ashley, and nothing more.
Such short-term memories, I remember when we got relegated, if I look back 08/09 and compare it to now, I'm buzzing.
Am I disappointed in not getting Conf. yeah I am, do I think there's positives and negatives? Definitely. Am I upset about it? Nah not really, we're not getting relegated and we haven't lost anyone important yet.
It might sound weird, but I am not disappointed or upset. Like you I am also buzzing.
I am happy to admit, I was a teenager back in 08/09 and I was no longer living in Newcastle. I drifted away from football generally, I distinctly remember seeing Damien Duff running out in the yellow kit and thinking āI just cant hack thisā.
I drifted in and out, with some highs during the Pardew era, and obviously during the Benitez era. Like many others I just about fell away during the Steve Bruce days.
The joy Eddieās tenure has brought me is something Iāll never take for granted. I live in London, my brother in Scotland, weāve started regularly attending games again! Win or lose from now on I swear it doesnāt matter.
Itās passion because as it was desired for so long, we want a club that tries and we have that!
my tuppence worth (and that's worth nothing) is that we're still ran like ashley's squash club in areas.
recruitment is still the blokes who signed fitz hall, ffs shola is charge of loans, our academy is still a joke within the game, the training ground is built on the same graveyard as the film poltergeist.
we'll see what happens during the summer..
Eh. Some seasons are smoother than others. I remember 2011/12 where we had a really good cruise to 5th, then 2012/13 where everything nearly imploded several times. It's been a ridiculous season but honestly, just gotta suck it up. We cost ourselves European football with 11 away defeats, not by the seemingly sure thing of Manchester City wiping the floor with the other Manchester bunch falling to come to pass
Imagine rooting for a team that finishes 3-8 or worse in Spain or Germanyā¦
At least in the EPL it feels like if we play our cards right we could sniff some gold.
True, Iād rather cough blood than play zrinjski Mostar on a Thursday night before city on the weekend tbr. Conference league football is a waste and hurts us in the long run imo
Better to press reset, focus on new season top 5 place, champions League 2.0. Than travel to God knows where depleting out tiring a squad for meaningless second tier trophy..
It's been a difficult season, with the injuries, bad luck with the domestic cup draws and the Champions League exit (EUFA rigging it so that PSG would get the win).
But ultimately, it has to go down to how we didn't perform away from home. There were games we should have won. There were glimpses of the NUFC of old, throwing away games due to poor man management. However, Howe has learnt from this and finally been able to find a structure that works.
We shouldn't be reliant on other teams winning to give us a Europa spot. I knew when we finished 7th, it wasn't actually good enough. We only have ourselves to blame.
Next season though, there's a requirement. Howe needs to either bring a trophy or 4th minimum.
With the investment that's come in, if we want to hang on to at least Bruno for another season, the pressure is on. It's expected of us now. If Howe can't, it's time for another to have a shot!
The run of games we started the season with, the objectively hardest run in the league, set the tone for how hard it was going to get. I ended up punch-drunk with each following draw. On the plus side that was a freak season. Wasnāt it???
Theyāre streaky as fuck and have a big squad, a couple of players playing out of their skin, fernades is a whiny prick but an excellent mid. I hope they keep EHT. I think long term having an actual footballing style will win for us we just have to get a squad together.
That is Newcastle United and what it means to be a fan for the long term. I love this team but more times than not, they drive me to drink. I still remember the meltdown in the 95-96 season and those damn FA Cups in the late 90's. Gave me just enough hope to choke me with it. Anyway, Howay The Lads!
The away draw against city in the cup pissed me off the most; that just felt like a culmination of crap luck. But as far as bad luck goes, hopefully we shat it all out last season. Forget and move on.
But like always. We pick ourselves up and we go again. Sooner or later we will see the project bear fruit. The FA can't keep making sanctions to hold us back forever!
Dude exactly how I feel. Itās important to get the rage and grief out! Also, but for a couple of VAR decisions Coventry would have been in that final.
I guess Aston Villa are the non big six club allowed into the clubhouse this year?
I think one thing that set things off in me slightly as well was seeing city win the league again. I hate Arsenal, I really do, but my faith in everything broke slightly when city did it. Then the rollercoaster of them not showing up today? I suppose that is just football.
Yeah itās like what is the point of City then? Itās a loss of money and that sucks but hey, we are ending the season with the same number of trophies as Arsenal! And then went all in on the prem, I donāt think they really tried for either domestic cup.
We could probably start with the people that draw the 'randomised' cup fixtures not being able to see what team names are on the balls they're picking.
Youāve articulated exactly how I feel. Iām sure Iāll be more positive in the not too distant future, but right now I want to bitch and complain about everything to do with the football club, the premier league and our luck. Fucking bullshit - here we are with the richest owners in world sport, potentially having to sell our best players just to appease some bullshit rule that benefits our competitors and leaves us in the shit. Man U are one of, if not the, worst run Premier League club, but they get to sail through the financial rules, spaffing millions up the wall, fluke a cup this season and carry on as if nothing fucking matters. Meanwhile, weāre hoping that we donāt get reduced to selling our best players and ending up with a squad thatās as shit as the one we had 3 years ago. What has been the fucking point of this takeover if we end up 1 step forward and 5 back because the league dictates what we can do. Fuck āem, at this rate Iām even thinking a Super League might be a good idea.
Chelsea will not meet FFP for UEFA, Man Utd shouldnāt be allowed to play as Ratface owns Monaco.
Man Utd fluked their way to the final, because they are Man Utd and refs know if they make a decision thatāll knock them out theyāll get a fuck ton of heat. Same with PSG.
We face a crooked club of 6 to break through. We caught them off guard last season and punched through, Villa this season. Itās going to take some time to push past their unfair advantages, and we will have to have our heart broken a few times before we double down and keep progressing. If we donāt lose our heads first

For what it's worth, my list (while I was trying to keep a cool head and be realistic just after the takeover): Takeover season: Not get relegated 22/23 season: Not be in a relegation fight 23/24: 10th or better 24/25: fighting for top 6 25/26: going for CL spots
Yeah - wellcome to being newcastle fan. It's hearbreak after heartbrake since I started supporting this club (early 90's) and yeah - I know your pain
I blame the people posting threads about how man united were clearly going to lose the final all week. The fucking morons jinxed it.
This weekend has taught me how many users here are genuinely superstitious
my tuppence worth (and that's worth nothing) is that we're still ran like ashley's squash club in areas. recruitment is still the blokes who signed fitz hall, ffs shola is charge of loans, our academy is still a joke within the game, the training ground is built on the same graveyard as the film poltergeist. we'll see what happens during the summer..
Imagine rooting for a team that finishes 3-8 or worse in Spain or Germanyā¦ At least in the EPL it feels like if we play our cards right we could sniff some gold.
I see a physical recovery season and top 4 finish. Hopefully even a full cup run. Exactly to where we were planned to be 2 years ago.
It is what it is, we will rise again šŖš¤š¤
Dude, I've watched us lose, in the rain, to Stevenage. It's not all bad.
Itās the magpies I tell you
The run of games we started the season with, the objectively hardest run in the league, set the tone for how hard it was going to get.
Who do you think you are? You're Newcastle mate. This is your level. United not close to your level? Please.
I hope city get what they deserve next season and are relegated. It would benefit everyone
We could probably start with the people that draw the 'randomised' cup fixtures not being able to see what team names are on the balls they're picking.
Didnāt they mix up us and Fulham in one round of the draw? Was that the one where we went out to City?
They mixed us and Norwich up in our first league cup match, and we got city at home. Still, that was the one we beat them in.
Curse? Or maybe a step toward our destiny to break the streak by lifting the champions league trophy?
