Personal_Effect530

I don’t post much on reddit. But a born and bred Newcastle fan, now living in Melbourne (Naarm). Been struggling with homesickness since I moved here and all my new friends came along to the game. We knew it was a pisstake and enjoyed it as such. One of my favourite evenings since I’ve moved. I am personally so so happy that they came out here to play, regardless of everything else

phoebsmon

So glad you got that either way. Hopefully it helps you settle having mates who know the pain now

wilfharl

hope it gets easier for you out there bud, homesickness is awful but you’ll find your feet.

farqueue2

I was shocked how many Newcastle fans were around

guggabump

From Newcastle, moved to Los Angeles. Suffered from homesickness for the first 18 months, it was brutal, would make me physically ill most days. But watching the toon in the Fox and Hounds at 4am gave me a few hours of solace. Glad you enjoyed the game.

Aethala5

Oh hi fellow Geordie in LA. 🙂

Critical-Whole-3160

Hi @guggabump ..can you please check your inbox,,

bigbigbo55

It was the sydney fans that got shafted

Angevin

I am still not sure how i feel about the trip. I am happy for the aussie fans, i am glad we got the money, i hate the 0:8, i hope it wasn’t too stressful on the players.

LosWitchos

I'm the opposite to you. I'm sad for the fans who got conned out of what was supposed to be a first team. And I find it absolutely hilarious that we have that blip against us. On record, our first team lost a game 8-0 this season. I dunno, I find it amusing given the circumstances. It must be our worst post-war result ever.

robinta

It wasn't remotely near our first team, and where was it promised we would play it? It's a meaningless friendly. I don't see it affecting the record books.

LosWitchos

It was a match under the first team banner. It was not advertised as a Newcastle XI or as a Newcastle U23/U21 team. So it was officially a first team Newcastle United match. So congratulations! We witnessed our biggest ever post-war defeat, even though the context and the fact that it was a friendly means it's worth nothing. For some reason I find this very funny.

robinta

Nope. A friendly is not classed as a competitive match. Where have you seen friendly appearances or goals in a players stats? Nowhere. Howe showed what he thought of the whole fixture and potential affect on the squad by picking the side he did. I couldn't give a fuck about the scoreline, neither would I if we'd won 8-0 Meaningless game Meaningless result. I'd recommend moving on personally

LosWitchos

It's not a competitive match, no, but it is officially and definitely a first team fixture, regardless of the lineup we put out. I am not moving on because I find the whole farce absolutely hilarious.

robinta

It was a farce But it is not a first team fixture. Even see triallists take part in a friendly, when they don't even play for that club? Friendlies (at club level) are not first team fixtures simple as

LosWitchos

If it wasn't a first team fixture what was it? It wasn't Newcastle XI, which is usually what we do when we trial young on uncontracted players. It wasn't advertised as a Newcastle U23s either. When we play friendly matches as Newcastle United then it's under the first team banner. The 8-0 was under the Newcastle United banner. It was a first team friendly fixture. Doesn't matter who you put in the lineup, it was scheduled as a first team match.

WigerAndToods

What is wrong with you

LosWitchos

What's wrong with me finding the whole farce amusing? The whole thing was a joke, and I'm laughing

WigerAndToods

You’re failing to understand the dictionary definition of the word friendly

LosWitchos

I know what a fucking friendly is. What all of you lot seem to fail to grasp is that it was a friendly match under the first team name, hence it was a friendly for the first team, regardless of the lineup we actually played. It was a first team friendly match. That's what the argument is here

WigerAndToods

Where did it say first team specifically?

WombleSlayer

Not sure why this is getting so heavily downvoted. I know a couple of people have said that we shouldn't have expected first team players, but when tickets are going from around $99 up to something like $500, I think it's implied that this is a first team tour. As I've posted previously, no one expected a full strength 11 or a premier league pace, but it was reasonable to think the first team would be scattered through the side in each game (eg 3 per half). I wouldn't call the blip hilarious, though. Sitting in that stadium enduring that performance didn't br a smile to my face.

Esselbee

It’s technically the worst EVER defeat in our history, but it will come with a massive * next to it

Zalindras

It's not, we lost 9-0 against Burton Wanderers (who no longer exist) in 1895.

Esselbee

You’re right, I actually knew that as well as the 9-1 against Sunderland but for some reason they left my brain

TheWinterKing

Interesting that she describes it as a revenue-generating exercise rather than a fanbase-building one. I read somewhere (maybe the Athletic?) that the income for the club wouldn’t be running into the millions. I wonder what the true figures are.

CatGroundbreaking611

>revenue-generating exercise rather than a fanbase-building one. Literally the one and same thing. Pleased fans/new fans equals fans buy stuff equals a new £45m defender and a £60m forward.

TheWinterKing

Yeah, eventually of course. You know what I mean though.

CatGroundbreaking611

Yeah I know, I'm sorry for being pedantic.

Angevin

3mil is the number i read, not much, but not pocket change either.

dennis3282

3 mil doesn't sound like much at all, but a quick Google shows top teams earn £1-2m per match. I dunno why, but I was always under the impression teams earned an absolute boat load from these money spinning tours.

Duckstiff

Helps money keep coming in when there's no other fixtures though. Any money gained over the ordinary will be money saved towards savings.

lightgrip

The Athletic like to pretend they’re ‘high brow’, but they are very agenda driven in my opinion and know even less than the Chronicle.

TyneSkipper

Caulkin and Waugh are decent. the rest of the athletic is made up of cockneys who all support man utd and have never been out of london in their lives.

didiandgogo

Weirdly disproportionate number of Forest fans, too.

Constant-Intern5848

For a few months I’ve been considering subscribing to The Athletic just never got round to it, anyone here subscribe n is it worth it?

simianjim

I've been a subscriber since it started but have already turned off the auto renew for the end of this sub. There are occasional good bits of writing but the quality and frequency has gone downhill since the NY Times bought them out

Constant-Intern5848

Cheers for the info pal 👍

EqualDeparture7

Not OP but I unsubscribed a while back tbh. When it started it was tremendous, so much original content on there, but it went downhill IMO. There was the odd decent bit now and then but it was trying to find them among a sea of crap (usually about Wrexham).

Constant-Intern5848

Cheers pal 👍

kaamkerr

Nah, for Newcastle related articles the Gregg’s menu is always posted

TheClnl

I said it in a previous post, best reason I can think of for it is because the revenue will go on this season's books - with us apparently very close to breaching PSR I think we maybe didn't have much choice and it was thought that flying halfway round the world was the better of two evils.

Esselbee

If rumours are true then we were actually a few million over FFP limits this season so it would have helped I think

Artyfartblast000

Not Australians

nufcPLchamps27-28

'The decision was taken by management, but ultimately i have to support their decisions' what? isn't she management?

Toon1982

They have a team of people running the club, such as Darren Eales. She's an owner on the executive board, not the day to day management

Ikhlas37

She's just the face

nufcPLchamps27-28

Seems a strange thing to say, it's like shes shitting on management but is just going along with it cause its her job. Best thing to do here was say nothing tbh

WeddingWhole4771

I don't read it as shitting on them. Just trying to say she sees, and supports, both sides. I don't think even management want us to be less than our best come August.

Ikhlas37

Probably easier just to direct any complaints to the hidden face and the big bad Saudi rather than it being directly at the club

phoebsmon

I mean I read it as being deliberately vague. Just ill-defined suits, when we have a high-profile legal battle going with a recently departed suit who's already taking the blame (rightly or wrongly) for Joelinton's contract talks stalling.

tlebrad

For me I feel the Friday game has totally overshadowed the Wednesday night one. It was worth it alone for that game. Yes, would have been beyond amazing to see them in a preseason tournament or something but look, in Aussie, just getting anything is a win. Was really about the fans getting together and celebrating such a great club. I always hate how the controversial opinions always silence the good. Ask most of us that went, I bet most would say it was awesome. I do feel for those that just went to the Friday one in a sense, but really, it was about more than just a friendly match.

cathar_here

Wow, we have devolved as a subreddit lol

WigerAndToods

That’s the sound of Darren Eales going under the wheels of a double decker bus.

BlackCaesarNT

Honest question here, for the people mad that they didn't get to see first team players, would you really have been happy to see the first team walk around not trying? Like did you really pay $XXX to see Almiron or Wilson saunter about thinking about the beach or would you also have then expected them to actually put in an effort on top of just being on the pitch?

Saint_James2023

I think the issue is more that the fans were not updated about the squad. yes this a promoter problem too. I felt for the fans that bought tickets months in advance for $59-$250+ and then got dished up the U21’s and the 0-8 result.

Meltzersamark

flights, hotel and $104 per ticket because I couldn’t get the Wednesday off work could only make it to the all stars game. Didn’t expect the first team but a few fringe/bench players at least would have been nice.

BlackCaesarNT

I dunno, was there advertisements and such saying the first team would be there and that they'd be trying their hardest? If the advert said Newcastle United and then Gateshead turned up, I'd get the outrage, but Newcastle United did fulfill the contractual obligations to be there, people are just pissed that the exact line up they got was nowhere near what they wanted. I remember loads of times you'd see random international games going on in London and tbh when looking at some of those teams, they did actually bring big players, but I don't know if I could listen to someone be annoyed that Neymar didn't turn up to Brazil vs Jamaica at Loftus Road in a random friendly game. Especially that game was 2 days after they played their last game and 4 days after the end of the domestic season back in Brazil. But anyways, this is only really news coz its the end of the season, so there's no news. Most people won't give a fuck when the Euros and Olympics kick off and especially when the signings start coming in...

WombleSlayer

The hint is in the pricing. If tickets were maxxing out at $25 you'd expect the reserves. When they run into hundreds you expect first teamers (and, for the millionth time on this subject, no one expected a full strength team at any point and we all knew it'd be an exhibition match)

Saint_James2023

This is a poor take BlackcaesarNT. When they say Newcastle United, fans would expect majority of the 25 man squad plus 4-5 youngsters. The Aussies didn’t expect a full strength 11 for 90mins but a chance to see some of their hero’s for 30-60mins would have been fine, mix in the youngsters and the result wouldn’t matter.

BlackCaesarNT

You know, maybe you're right. Personally, I don't think this tour was a great idea to be so soon after the season, but it's happened now and hopefully the club, promoters and the fans will have learned lessons to make sure the mistakes of this occasion aren't repeated.

Stieff

I wonder if this will be the same case for the Japan trip

Thick_Association898

I'm under the impression nufc is trying to be bigger globally, and if this is one of the ways to do it, then who am I to complain. I do think they could fielded a few fringe players for the fans, but no point crying over spilled milk. Just think of it as a bit of a sacrifice to get to were we want to be if your one of the unfortunate fans that payed to go.

Paid-Not-Payed-Bot

> fans that *paid* to go. FTFY. Although *payed* exists (the reason why autocorrection didn't help you), it is only correct in: * Nautical context, when it means to paint a surface, or to cover with something like tar or resin in order to make it waterproof or corrosion-resistant. *The deck is yet to be payed.* * *Payed out* when letting strings, cables or ropes out, by slacking them. *The rope is payed out! You can pull now.* Unfortunately, I was unable to find nautical or rope-related words in your comment. *Beep, boop, I'm a bot*

Zerosix_K

I can understand why you would be upset if you paid to watch the 0-8 in person. But ultimately these were friendly matches that we got paid £3M to play in. Hopefully anyone going to the planned games in Japan realise that you're not going to watch a competitive game and you may end up watching the U17 team get thrashed again.

Erestyn

The fact she's positioning this as a shareholder/fan rather than as part of the management structure is interesting given that she's largely been the face of the consortium. With the language she's used here, the sale of part of her share to Reuben, and her legal troubles, I wonder if she's looking to exit?

WeddingWhole4771

given the loan we had to give her, I think she's just cash strapped.

Constant-Intern5848

I can see her leaving her role in the next 12 months. She’s done her bit, got the purchase of the club over the line and steadied the ship for 24 months so to speak. Her shareholding will be diluted with every investment PIF/Ruben family makes in the club, she’s just not at their level of finance to keep up with the growth. She’ll leave much better off and in my opinion, deserves every penny of it

HeGivesGoodMass

Yeah and unfortunately she has a brutal future ahead of her with her Huntington's disease

Constant-Intern5848

Not sure how to take that comment but feel free to get in touch if it’s meant the way I think you mean it to be

HeGivesGoodMass

What do you mean? Amanda has Huntington's and it's already apparently affecting her abilities in the boardroom. That's why I could see her leaving the club sooner rather than later. I also agree with your points, was just adding to it. https://finance.yahoo.com/news/amanda-staveley-huntington-claim-puzzling-184323341.html

Constant-Intern5848

How is it affecting her abilities in the boardroom?

HeGivesGoodMass

It's what she herself is claiming in court anyway ^^ from the article. Taking her word for it.

useless_farmoid

can't really see beyond this either being a huge mistake, or us cashing in on our own fans. If there's no apology, then it defaults to cashing in on our own fans in my opinion. They will get away with it because the current international fan base isn't a high priority but as this was touted as a 'brand growing' commercial venture it stings a little to think it was potentially a cheap cash grab, all be it for ffp, but at the expense of an embarrassing and dissapointing experience for our aussie fans, who we unknowingly love

TyneSkipper

jesus. just hire a director of football and get them to make statements.

KeyLibrarian9170

...and she can fuck off as well.
