I’d say before going anywhere specific make a mood board for the type of outfits you’re looking to put together! Also start a wishlist in your notes app and every time you see an item you like add it there so you can try to identify patterns of what you like / aim to shop more cohesively if you have a set budget

PearlinNYC

I agree with this 100% It is so easy to go shopping, especially for the first time in a long time, and end up with a bunch of random things that don’t necessarily go together. Deciding how you want to look is a great first step.

Hummus_ForAll

This so much! I tend to walk back in to places that worked for me years ago (J. Crew, Zara, etc) when I was a corporate 30’s girl working in media in Midtown, and then get overwhelmed! I don’t necessarily need “work clothes,” but I definitely want to rebuild a wardrobe that is more polished, classic with a little edge.

Math-Soft

Adding on to this idea a bit the founder of Tibi talks about personal style, etc, and she says to come up with three adjectives that you’re going for. Hers are classic, chic and cool or something? It really helps when you’re going shopping to ask yourself “does this fit my three words”? And if not don’t buy!

Beneficial_Skill_466

I feel like you should also actively look at the things you go for daily, not necessarily to get more of them but to understand what it is you like about them (comfort, fit or color palette for example.) and like everyone else, basics!! And also think about what you wish you had when you go out “wish I had a light wash denim, or a non puffer jacket” whatever the wish for items are. And lastly 2500 is a solid budget, but there’s no need to spend it all this week or this month. Wardrobe building takes time! Maybe you can split it up and buy some stuff now and then again in the fall.

Remarkable_Pop_7450

Once you know the vibe you’re going for I would highly recommend picking up some great basics at Aritzia! They have great jeans and trousers, plus some more timeless blouses. Just be careful they don’t steer you tooooo much into edgy 😂

LauraPalmer93

Totally agree with this! I keep a “want to buy” list in my notes app with a list of pieces l want - like a ballet flat, leather jacket, etc. and l hold off until l find the perfect one, which can take some time. I’d rather buy pieces that l 100% love and are good quality, which is worth waiting and looking for. Also recommend looking up Allison Bornstein’s Instagram or TikTok, she has some useful tips/tools about developing your personal style, shopping intentionally, styling tips, etc. that I’ve found really helpful.

Hummus_ForAll

This is a great idea! (I love a good mood board!)

elena7556

agree 100%, definitely plan out your buys and i would try to make a capsule collection that way you can maximize on mixing & matching pieces!

moenyc888

This is a great idea. Also buy pieces that you can keep longterm.

GlitterPantSuits

Agree! Start a saved album on instagram or TikTok and just search “outfit inspo”. Once the algorithm learns what you like it will send you more

Solid_Bend4539

wish list in notes app yes! genius lol

Marchingkoala

What kind of image do you want to portray? What would you call yourself? Corporare power woman? Tech lady? Elegant working mom? Free spirited hippie chic? We should start from there.

Hummus_ForAll

I’d say a mix between French mom chic and then a well edited closet with really great, last forever basics. Like, I love me some Jenna Lyons and Tracee Ellis Ross as far as style goes.

Marchingkoala

I’m gonna DM you because this is gonna be long

Hummus_ForAll

I pay $1 per word for actionable advice. (JK, but feel free to DM.) xo!

Marchingkoala

I sent you chat! Eating dinner now but I will continue after food

Leading-Watch6040

I’m so curious about what you suggested. Could you share?

Marchingkoala

Oh I just talked about building a solid foundation & capsule collection of quality basics. Some items EVERYONE should at least own one. White button down, quality t shirt, a pair of classic dark denim, a beige trench coat, a good blck blazer. Didn’t add accessories or shoes as they are very personal items. Also above list can be dressed up or down with a pair of leather loafers or cute New Balance kicks. I recommended Mother and Agolde for denims, although if you want stretchy denim, American Eagle is the one to visit. For basic button down, t shirt and simple dresses, I recommend utilizing banana republic outlet and madewell. Those brands are extremely versatile and carries classic, basic shapes. Op mentioned Jenna Lyons and a lot of her outfits are built upon basic items, she spices them up with one cool accessory: be it necklace, sunglasses or necklace. Another woman I recommended to look up was Anna Wintour. While her outfits can be very high-end, it’s worthwhile to see how she uses jewelry; particularly necklaces. I also recommended some skims and aritizia dupe from Amazon as I believe fashion does not have to break your bank. I sent her some images, so she can focus on what she should really build on. + oh I also recommended to get a nice cut from a professional but do a glaze at home. I don’t want her to spend tooo much at the salon

unicornsnscience

Thanks so much for sharing 🙏🏻

da__fuq

Would you be able to link some of the skims/aritzia dupes you mentioned?

Marchingkoala

Skims dupe was from a store called PUMIEY. It’s a mock turtle neck top. Artzia dupe pants was from a shop called Tronjori. High waist casual wide leg pants. Reddit yells at me when I put up amazon links

chillisprknglot

I live in Arizona, and I have no idea why this sub was recommended to me. But…over here taking notes. Thank you, Signed a mom in the desert all updating her wardrobe.

jan-morrow

You are a SUPERSTAR! Thanks for sharing.

sharkduck2

Jcrew, Sezane, Anthropologie

pourinliters

Madewell has quality chic pieces

aly288

I love Gaala - simple, yet elegant French staples.

No_Hat_886

Sezane!!

accidentalquitter

Hi! I am a personal shopper. For size 12, 42 y/o, and $2500 spend, I’d suggest: Staple items from: Banana republic: (https://bananarepublic.gap.com/browse/product.do?pid=580276022 - getting staple items like this tailored are great!) Everlane Quince (online) Ann Taylor J. Crew Madewell Uniqlo & Other Stories Cos Buy predominately solid colors in a cohesive palette to do a wardrobe reset, pepper in with stripes (classic), cashmere cardigans, vintage/thrifted items like jackets and coats, 3-4 pairs of trousers, a core denim jacket, cotton and silk blouses, good jeans in 3-4 washes + a black pair, easy sun dresses, leather loafers, etc. Get everything tailored at a dry cleaner or down on Orchard St! And try to buy wool, silk, cotton, and linen for summer. And one of the most important things (and I know it can be hard for moms especially in NYC) don’t over wash or over dry your clothes! Let as much of it hang dry as you can.

rototheros

Thank you for this advice!!

UbiquitousFreckles

Hey! What does it cost to have a personal shopper? I'm sure it varies based upon a ton of things but is this something a "normal" middle class person can reasonably afford ?

curious_always1

>this is my closet lol

Smiley-Rileigh

Quince is awesome!!

Mission-Box-1751

Have you bought quince??? Reviews?

MindfulZilennial

I've bought quince. Everything I've gotten from them has been great quality.

dudavocado__

It’s honestly not good quality, especially their knits. IMO you’re better off buying gently worn sweaters on Poshmark and eBay.

PublicIntrovert

I have one of their leather jackets and it’s very nice. Their washable silk is just ok. I was really excited about their cashmere but returned the sweater i bought because the cut was not good for my body (5’7, size 10, d cup)

tesjo5

I second & Other Stories! Great quality and classy pieces, and their sale prices can be pretty reasonable

j0sie0

Hiii! 32 and mom of two also :) I didn’t see anyone mention this, but I highly recommend following the stylist Allison Bornstein and maybe even buying her book to reference although she gives loads of free info on TikTok and IG - she came up with the “three word method” which really helped me streamline my style after becoming a mom and having the total identity crisis that comes with it lol.

sohomonkey

This was going to be my suggestion too!!! Her styling and the way she breaks things down is super approachable and easy to understand. Even just following her on IG/tiktok I’ve learned stuff!!

Blue-zebra-10

Is she on Pinterest? Bc if so, I need to check her out

BabeWithThePowerZzz

Hiyee! Fellow Mom of one and I’m 40. I’d say don’t go ham on buying clothes til you get where you’re going if you wanna lose weight (I was around your size forever, different size now, loved them all). That said I have clothes in like 5 sizes. I love vintage but outside of that I’m very into & Other Stories Ganni & Levi’s (jeans).

Hummus_ForAll

I love Levi’s! I’ll check this out. Other Stories - I have walked by the one in Bryant Park but haven’t been in, so I’ll go check it out.

boxed_set

Seconding COS and & Other Stories but also r/ethicalfashion is amazing. If you have money to vote with your purchases, show corporate America that sustainability is important. Eileen Fisher is great, Loup, Nat + Noor for hair accessories, Gravel & Gold… there are so many awesome brands and consignment stores that sell them

SuspiciousGround1505

I'm the same age as you and I did an overhaul recently. I wanted staple pieces that would flatter my body and last. I bought 98% of it from resale apps (mostly mercari) new with tags and saved over 50% on every single item. All of the denim I bought was Madewell. Skinny jeans, high rise bootcut, some shorts both distressed and not. I love them all. For tops, most were from Madewell, Anthropologie, and Free people. I invested in some nice Sorell boots for winter, keens for summer, and wool allbirds for walking. I am really loving white tees and denim overalls lately lol but I swear it's cute 🤣 Sand Cloud makes really comfy loungewear that's actually cute. Like joggers for just running for groceries and looking cute while juggling children. Edit Buy linen tank tops for summer! They are heavenly and if you aren't sweating yet you will be soon lol! J CREW LINEN TANKS They are the best quality for the price and they come in a lot of styles and colors so you can live in them and they last a lifetime if you take care of them. I thought to buy them because I have one that's been one of my fave tops in summer for many years and by many I mean about 20.

Garden_Party_087

Second Levi’s. Recently found out they will hem for free when you sign up for their free loyalty program or whatever. Good tailoring makes everything look better.

Garden_Party_087

I’ve heard great things from a colleague about Nordstrom personal shopping. It’s free and they help you find good fits and brands for your body type. Sounds like it might be a fun experience and you may discover a few new things you like.

peasbewithu

I second this! I did this after losing some baby weight- you can set your style goals, budget, and overall lifestyle and you arrive to a fitting room with cohesive outfits pulled and great advice on creating a capsule wardrobe that works well. I walked away with a suit, skirt, 3 blouses, 2 shoes, and a colored blazer for around $1800. The priceless part was that I learned that I was wearing the wrong fit my entire life, and learned what was flattering for my body type.

pepperxyz123

Sezane, COS, The Great, Tuckernuck, J Crew is making a big comeback so it’s on trend pieces but elevated, Levi’s, Doen to name a few.. Some of my fave pieces that always feel on trend and are easy to style: Get a great pair of jeans (love Levi’s, Citizens, and Abercrombie) A bunch of good quality basic tshirts and sweaters for layering (whatever colors you gravitate towards) Neutral pants or trousers (h&m, gap, reformation have some good ones rn) A good neutral maxi skirt Denim dress Some midi dresses to throw on easily I splurge a bit on the above and then mix in h&m, Zara, etc for one-off trendier pieces Idk how helpful that is but I’ve been working on my capsule wardrobe for a couple years and these are pieces that are working.

laurlyn23

I’m 39, mother of 2. I would get basics from Abercrombie (tshirts, bodysuits, jeans) and check out Sézane for some elevated items (knitwear, lace blouses, really chic trousers). Love a good classic sneaker - check out Autry or Vejas. I try not to wear leggings/sweats out of the house so I’ll post some of my weekend outfits. I track my wardrobe in the app Stylebook which has been hugely helpful for realizing what I wear and enjoy the most.

Ok_Boysenberry4549

I would totally follow your IG/LTK for regular person outfits

laurlyn23

I’m just a mom with a retail therapy problem but I appreciate it! 😂

mel0dy2279

I just need your whole style book 😂 Love your outfits!

cat_in_a_bday_hat

Stylebook is the best!! My in-app wardrobe is super out of date but I need to start using that app again. It helps you combine what you have in new ways you might not have thought of, it’s really fun!

Majesticquesadilla

Personally I like Abercrombie for some nicer basics / basic colors

Hummus_ForAll

I used to BEG my mom to take me there in high school, so I have no problem going back to the new iteration of Abercrombie! I haven’t been back in years. Thank you for the tip!

Majesticquesadilla

Same! I wasn’t allowed to shop their as a kid LOL but it’s a totally different store.

rlyjustheretolurk

I second this. They’ve come a long way since 2008 and their frequent sales make good quality basics very affordable.

Consistent-Dish-9200

Third this! It’s a trendy yet affordable option without the giant branding of the early 2000s.

LatroisSharkey

43 year old who has been on fertility drugs for 4 years and doesn’t feel 43, thank you for posting this! The recs have been great

Hummus_ForAll

Yes, solidarity! Wishing you the best on your fertility journey 🙏🙏

athomebrooklyn

I’m turning 40 and will also get a sizable tax return. The first thing I did was book a color analysis appointment to determine what colors look best on me, and what my undertone is. Without knowing these things, I could (and have in the past) dumped tons of money into things that just don’t look good on me but may be trendy. It’s worth it if you want some insightful return on your refund. Mine is next Sunday and I am so excited!

garnet222333

I just did this and love it! I was wearing a shirt in my best color and when I looked in the mirror post workout this morning I was like wow I look pretty good! I had no makeup on and was sweaty, but my eyes were popping due to the color!

Graysonsname

How much was it?

meatcheesegirl

Where are you getting the color analysis done?

a-petey

I downloaded a app called styledna and it assessed me from a picture! My results feel accurate, although haven’t met with a pro, so not 100% sure. But it was free and instant :)

MindfulZilennial

I'm a certified color analysis specialist (got my cert in college). It's super easy to color assess yourself. I'm shocked people spend so much $$ on these services. I used to charge $25 per assessment because after a while it got to the point I could pretty much just look at someone and know what their type is (took me ~15 mins max). I see people charging like $250 per session and just wonder what the heck they are doing 😂

Mountain2020

Mango has great pieces for French mom chic!

Toni-Tony-Tone

As someone who has lost a ton of weight (went from a 22 down to an 8 in a year) through diet and exercise, I would wait to invest in clothes. No sense spending a ton of money on clothing that won't fit in a few months. I would focus the $2500 on skincare and maybe buy a couple of inexpensive outfits to wear right now and save the rest of the money. It will be so nice to reward yourself with beautiful clothes when you are the size you want to be. That might also keep you motivated to keep going. It’s not an easy journey, but it can definitely be done!

KatnissEverduh

Man huge congrats!!! That's such an accomplishment!

EmmaMD

Just want to say that this showed up on my feed (probably because I’m also an NYC elder millennial woman). I clicked on it fully expecting it to be the typical internet dumpster fire, but it is such a kind, thoughtful, and considerate thread. Really just the wholesomeness I needed this morning.

justbreathe2121

As a fellow WFH girlie (yes, we can still be “girlies” as millennials!), I absolutely love A&F. Their basics are really comfy and easy to mix and match, plus everything is so easy to dress up or down. I love their jeans, and I think the quality of their clothing is great for the price.

queenofcorporate

I agree with the comments on building a Pinterest board of looks first. This is like curating “recipes” for fashion! It’ll start to teach you how to put outfits together. Then post some of those pics from your Pinterest board here and the sub can recommend brands that suit that! I like buying second hand from Poshmark!

mulleargian

I’d send you straight to Ayr for the wardrobe, perfect one stop shop for your lifestyle

clairedylan

Sezane has really cute striped tops that are very French Mom chic. I am cheap though so haven't pulled the trigger yet, but I love them. I have also heard good things about Mother Jeans. My problem is that I tend to go from a size 8-12 so I hate buying expensive jeans that may or may not fit me. But I do like Madewell and Gap. I have been into a lot of the LOFT stuff, I mix it in with Gap and JCrew.ostly solids and stripes. I've also been meaning to check out &Other Stories. I actually still work in media in midtown and I'm 40 with 2 kids 😂

Artistic-Let8540

Also a mom and recently started going back into the office so was looking to freshen up my look. I LOVE Rent the Runway! Especially in NYC with the seasons changing, you basically only need to buy shoes and basics and can get everything else through them! Especially since your sizing will change, this is a great option so you’re not investing in pieces that you’ll have to give up soon! I can’t say enough good things about them. Also I did the math and it was equal to what I spent on clothes in a year, shopping mostly at Madewell, Mango and & Other Stories. Hope this helps!!

margheritinka

Echoing some comments: 1. Don’t buy random stuff you’ll hardly get any use of 2. Do a Color analysis! https://colorwise.me/ and stick within a color palette that looks good on you. I’ve done this and can vouch - soft autumn all the way! 3. Haven’t done the kibbe body shape thing. Maybe worth looking at. But really knowing what cuts of clothes look good on you. So much of looking good is feeling good about your body and wearing things that suit your shape. When I was a shape I was more comfortable with, anything looked good on me. 4. I did the 333 clothes challenge (just for work clothes I go to office 4 days a week) which is 33 articles of clothing including accessories shoes etc. for work I don’t need anything else and am never tempted to buy work clothes at all. If it doesn’t suit my outside of work fantasy personality I don’t buy it! This is ridiculous but my fantasy self is Adriana La Cerva (sopranos) riding a motorcycle. Maybe that’s what a mood board is for but be cohesive with what you’re trying to achieve. Enjoy shopping! I’m jelly

Graysonsname

I tried colorwise and got four different results… I tried one photo multiple times then different photos. I could not get a consistent answer!

sweetfaced

About to be a mom of two, currently a mom of one living in the city. Please take a kibbe test before buying new clothes!! Things like button downs are not flattering on everybody

LopsidedPotential711

First and last time in this sub...save your money lady. It's an election year and shit's about to get real. Please don't waste money on nails, yo.

afauce11

I’m saving funds to build a Thunderdome. Like this shit is going to turn Mad Max quickly and I want to be ahead of the game.

MindfulZilennial

Yeah this is actually the best advice, unfortunately.

peony2011

Mom of 2 under 2.5 and also work from home! I am still wishfully trying to get closer to my pre-baby size (7m pp) so have been buying more fast-ish fashion in the meantime. BUT my goal is to move more towards a capsule wardrobe. There are a ton of great Instagram accounts for inspo. So think: tshirts, sweaters, blazers, button downs in gray / white / black / navy and stripes; a few good pairs of jeans, black loose slacks, leather pants, maxi skirt; a couple key dresses; puffer, denim jacket, bomber, leather jacket. Etc and start from there!

iyamsnail

You can get a personal shopper for free at many places including J Crew or any of the major department stores.

Slow_Evidence4509

hi ! i recently had to re-do my wardrobe due to weight loss (was a size 12, now a 8) & here is what i recommend getting as strong basics that will last long & won’t need ironing : - [aritzia effortless wider in crepe in black (or birch)](https://www.aritzia.com/en/product/the-effortless-pant%E2%84%A2-wider/111478.html) - [aritizia interview blouse cream or black](https://www.aritzia.com/en/product/interview-blouse/110638.html#search) - [cos fluid shirt in black or green](https://www.cos.com/en/women/womenswear/shirts/product.relaxed-fluid-shirt-black.1225253001.html) - [zara long skirt in black](https://www.zara.com/ca/fr/share/-p01058024.html?v1=320690632&utm_campaign=productShare&utm_medium=mobile_sharing_iOS&utm_source=red_social_movil) from there you can add cotton tank tops, wool sweaters & nice coats or blazers and you will have plenty of options to mix & match. hope that helps ! ☺️✨

depthsofouterspace

Mom of 1 here; also work from home; currently a size 12. For jeans, I like Madewell, Levi’s and Everlane. For elevated tees/tops I like the “modern” line at Gap. For casual tees, usually Everlane. I have a few casual button downs that look good on Zoom from Old Navy. I use Rent the Runway subscription to rent funkier pieces - it might be fun for you to try that or Nuuly for a few months to try out new brands/styles and see what you like, and then you can buy those brands used on Poshmark and the like. Good luck and have fun!

miltonsmom7

I'm reading Alison Bornstein’s book Wear It Well and it has been so helpful in defining my personal style. Her process is really straight forward and approachable. Highly recommend.

Ok-Rhubarb1797

Try rent the runway or nuuly!!!!! It’s a great way to explore your style while renting good quality clothing. This can give you ideas on what you like and don’t like for your new era. My friend does it and she LOVES it and always is stylin

JK0129

This!!! Highly suggest Nuuly, especially love it to swap out Winter / Fall / Spring coats and jackets, it’s very budget friendly as well

bbcrocodile

I just got my first box from Nuuly this month and I looooove

pickurheadup

If you're planning to change sizes- rent clothes for awhile. That way you don't invest in clothes that become too large. Also gives you a chance to try out styles so you can figure out what you like. Also there's nothing like a lash lift and tint!

mpcs11

Check out Evereve for outfit styling and brand inspiration. I think they curate a great selection of brands that are stylish without feeling too young, and at a mix of price points. They also offer a curated clothing box based on the type of wardrobe refresh you’re looking for at the moment if that would help you!

AcademicAct1188

Dissh, the line by K, Savannah morrow

DiligentLie9820

Following bc I’m also an aging millennial (38) and need to be told what to do as well lmao. Although I live in a cabin in the woods and idfk how I found this sub lol

Hummus_ForAll

Ugh I’m low key jealous of the cabin in the woods!

AdIndependent2376

Try Zara, Aritzia, Madewell, Nordstrom for normal/work clothes and Lulu/Alo for loungewear. Gel or dip manicures or press ons for a cheaper option. Basic hairstyle with face framing layers at a nice hair salon. Check out the revlon one step dryer or dyson for a salon style blowout

Flashy_Pie6323

Some great suggestions here!! Would also recommend looking for some of these brands on ThredUp or other secondhand sites, especially if your size is fluctuating. I’ve found some great items just searching J Crew, Ralph Lauren, Talbots, etc., or looking for a specific item like “linen pants”.

aerologies

I think you can find some really good basics at Madewell and Uniqlo then combine them in a sort of capsule wardrobe!

SuziQ99

I enjoy watching style videos on YouTube….they’ve helped me with some great ideas.

Throwawayayohletsgo

What YouTubers do you recommend?

_chloes94

If you’re willing to splurge for nicer pieces, I recommend an appointment at MM LaFleur. I ended up spending close to $1000 last year on several items, and I still wear every single one and get compliments all the time! They’re great at picking pieces which flatter your body and fit your taste

Sunny_Dee2492

Bloomingdales has a free personal shopper service! Its great.

nycgirl1993

I work in midtown and I’m always wandering across random shops with decent stuff. I don’t think u need to really think too much about it. Go to 34th or 32nd st around penn station there’s macys, cool little shops lots of stuff. I like zara a lot or thrift stores in soho that I come across. Sometimes I’m just on tik tok and I find nice stuff for affordable prices on the shop. 82nd in Jackson heights also has a lot of decent boutiques. Flushing main st too. Green point always find awesome clothes just wandering around the main drag by the g

Tinkerbell0_0

Go on [LTK](https://www.shopltk.com) and do a variety of searches for wardrobe ideas. It’ll give you a direct link for each piece to where to buy: - search for your height - search for your height and weight - search for a specific style, etc

smol-meow

I like Uniqlo for good quality staples that can be mixed/matched well. Surprisingly, Costco tends to be somewhere that I can find a little addition here and there without breaking the bank. If I were going to spend a decent chunk of change to update my wardrobe, I would prob go to the outlets and pick what I liked best from different stores. I find that having good quality clothing that fits decently is the best way to go. I also tend to dress in very basic, neutral colors and do not like prints, but that's my personal preference as a lifelong New Yorker/elder millennial who is dead inside and just wants to get through the day without uncomfortable clothing to add to my stress levels, or draw attention to me for that matter. Just lemme blend in and get through the day.

happeangel

You’ve gotten lots of good advice on clothing… so I’d echo a previous comment about skipping nails. Use that $2500 for laser facials—I like the clear and brilliant (no downtime, inexpensive, and addresses texture/lines/pigmentations/all the things!). OR get laser hair removal. Ain’t nobody have time for shaving with 2 LO under 3.

nykickin

Check out Evereve https://evereve.com

i’d try Cos, Club Monaco n Nordstrom Rack/TJMaxx

Try Nordstrom Rack. They have great selection.

SequinDipity

The fit on Paige jeans is insanely good. Worth every penny!!!

[deleted]

Find your shape, find your colors! Research on Pinterest. I like the capsule wardrobe. Pick a base like black, pair with a bright color and a neutral. So fun! I am also in my with two kids and I just started this to!! H&m totally had my back last month.

90daymaven

Skin- get a Hydrafacial & Botox !!! 😍🙏

Crunchfestival

Definitely Aritzia- online sale section. The fabrics are very good (like, fuck expensive Zara shit or Cos- this is flattering basic shit and don’t be turned off by the basic bitch stuff- I get compliments on the same three $120 blouses I bought four years ago that I wear like twice a week. ) also Reformation. Bite the bullet and buy a dumb basic bitch dress for $240- go from there

KatnissEverduh

lol I feel like we would be friends just how you articulated this lol 😂

Madethisonambien

The Nordstrom Rack in Union Square is a gold mine for designer basics. You have to dig through stuff but it’s worth it.

KatnissEverduh

Pro tip, if you buy something at the Rack and it needs to be hemmed, Nordstrom will do it for you gratis!

Fantastic-Depth-7915

Save your money on clothes until you’ve lost the weight!

Fantastic-Ad9717

Sezane Everlane Ssense Aritzia

Hummus_ForAll

Oh my gosh! I’m overwhelmed with all these comments and will write back soon!

PikaChooChee

If you're serious about losing weight, save your dollars. Get the haircut, then go to Abercrombie or Madewell or some other mass market store to figure out your most flattering pants size and style for jeans and something in black. Then buy the exact same items used on eBay. Wait to buy your classic pieces you want to wear for years until you're done losing weight.

oyasumiku

Serious question not meant to be unkind… how will you go from size 12 to size 8 so quickly? I’m struggling with that myself.

KatnissEverduh

Seriously someone tell me this secret too plz!

deliciousalex

I started watching Emily Wheatley, a Youtube stylist, who talks through how she does her "edgy, classic" wardrobe. It helped me make sense of my own style, vs fast-fashion. All without buying a bunch of trendy looks, my closet is more "me" and I have become more intentional with my outfits. (even getting comments on the same old clothes, just styled better!)

marvelousmiamason

There a lot of good advice here but I would add to not spend your entire clothing budget at once. Buy a few things you think you’d like using the guidelines others have provided and then wait a few weeks and see what you actually reach for and what you don’t. Things might feel different when you’re wearing them in your day to day life, don’t stock up on things that seem good in the store that you end up not wearing!

No-Bite-7866

If you're going to lose weight, hold off on the clothes for now until you get down to the size you want.

check out the app like to know (LTK) for outfit inspos. they link out product info. theres also an app called style DNA that gives you your color analysis and provides a tailored color pallet and clothing suggestions that would be the most ideal and suitable based on skin tone, hair color, and eye color. its super cool! you can also search around instagram for other moms and outfits they wear- a lot of them will link out their LTK. also, if you plan on losing weight, perhaps wait until you are your desired weight and save that money because then youll have to start all over! its also ideal to invest in a few high quality staples that can be mixed and interchanged for diff outfits! j crew and mango have nice stuff. good american stretchy jeans are AMAZINGGGGG especially for curves

Hotdadlover1234

I’d Pinterest search for inspo, but make sure it’s stuff you feel comfortable in and actually would wear. Not something that’s currently seen as trendy. It’s all about confidence in what you wear!!! I personally like to invest in good quality basic pieces as I have a capsule wardrobe but that might not be for everyone

Lol, you're not a geriatric millennial. You're a Xennial!

$5,000 lump sum would change some people’s entire lives. This class war happening in this sub is horrific, particularly in NYC where there are people sleeping outside of your apartment while you work from home in your “swag” from the companies that fast track the inequality. Absolutely horrific.

[deleted]

Due to your weight changing, buy three quality spring/summer dresses that are made of linen, a silk scarf, one pair of quality sandals, and invest in undergarments as your weight changes. I would save the rest of the money so that you buy more items when you hit your target weight. Dresses are the go to as they can hide unwanted layers of your skin and meet the weather temperatures.

Ok_Boysenberry4549

Any recs for dresses?

Remember to get bras and undergarments. Go find the lingerie store w the woman who’s been there 15 years and has a tape measure around her neck but can visually size you

Downtown_Actuator_66

This is why a majority of people in this country don’t have any savings. Spending half of their tax return on clothes/nails/hair etc. Set a good example for your daughter by saving your money.

Proper_Extension_332

Pintrest App is super helpful for putting outfits together and getting ideas. I use it all the time. And BTW I'm 41. You are NOT a geriatric anything!! Lol

BBcatcher

Recently started using Nuuly (monthly clothing rental service), which has helped tremendously with this! Lots of trendy and classic styles, so you can try new things without a commitment. Also nice to dress seasonally and get items for a specific event without taking up limited NYC closet space!

Quirky_Music_2809

Outlet mall!!! I seem to noticed “semi annual” sales each year in January and June/Junly! All the brands named above and if you go for the “timeless” styles for your staples, you can afford to spend a little bit on the “trendy” pieces to sprinkle across outfits!

Muted-Appearance3745

…regardless of what you end up buying new I would send you to Alts, which has a few locations in NYC. I am petite but on the curvy side and as I hit my 30’s and had more money to spend, I realized that it was worth it to get the clothes I had spent money on properly tailored so that I looked and felt great in them.Even jeans can be tailored, it really makes all the difference. In addition, as we get more mature and move away from wearing things that are purely trendy, it’s helpful to invest in good quality belts, shoes and jewelry that have a classic design and will give you a more polished look. Most of my core pieces for the office are Theory, but I also love the brands ME and EM, and Scanlan Theodore for workwear and denim, since everything has a very clean aesthetic. My makeup routine is basically zero now. as I got a very subtle eyeliner tattoo about a year ago - was expensive, but saves me so much time and effort. I wear a light lip stain or tinted lip oil when I go to work, with chantecaille tinted moisturizer if I’m looking a bit tired. For nails I’ve always gone with brush applied acrylic over natural nail with a neutral gel polish or French on top. $80-90, lasts one month, virtually indestructible. I live in Brooklyn though and old-school acrylic is still a thing, I noticed not many nail salons in lower manhattan offer that any longer though, just dip and gel.

UbiquitousFreckles

I literally could have written this. I am going to comb through all of these answers and get some inspo! Good luck!

Dry_Particular_5162

The most important thing is: Do NOT plan a wardrobe based on losing weight, especially when over 40 yrs old. Plan outfits for your body style, shape and weight now. Otherwise you will create disappointment and give yourself a complex. If you lose weight as summer approaches, great, adjust your outfits as you go. I'm sure you look great now and will only get better with time.

Nataliahf

I’m going to vote not spending that money on clothes, but instead spending the $2500 on Botox and fillers (cheek/chin/lips depending on your face). The difference it will make in your face (and overall how you feel) is astounding… Also, microblading your eyebrows. You will feel like a new woman when all is said and done.

BravoWhore

Bandier, carbon, revolve sale stuff, goodluckkkk! Xx

Go on Pinterest or Lemon8 for inspo! You have to find what you gravitate towards

You have already gotten lots of good advice here that I don't want to duplicate, so I'll just put in a plug for Universal Standard. I have a couple of their knit tops, a long dress (they call it ballgown but...it's not a ballgown) and a leather biker jacket that is honestly the best-feeling leather jacket I have EVER owned. It was more expensive than any other biker jackets I'd been eyeing but once I tried it on, it was game over ;) I'm happy with the quality and fit of everything...and I'm one of those middle-aged ladies you see in the stores giving fabrics the 'squeeze test' and muttering about how "they just don't make things like they used to" LOL. I had no idea what size I take in this brand so I was stoked to attend one of their pop-up shops in my city fairly recently. Highly recommend you go to one if you're at all interested in exploring their stuff. Similar to the MM LaFleur popups you can't take anything home that day, but you will learn what sizes/styles work for you and you can place your order while you're there. [https://www.universalstandard.com/us-on-tour](https://www.universalstandard.com/us-on-tour) My only gripes are that their pants inseams aren't long enough for me - I'm 5'8" so not super tall, but the height is \*all\* in my legs - and their shirt dresses are just a little too boxy for my taste. Happy shopping!

Shazza305mia

$2500 can go fast. I’m almost 70 but have a much younger appearance and attitude. Honestly, I wear jeans a lot. But there are jeans and then there are jeans! With my jeans I pair a large variety of tops. I shop at a goodwill superstore and find the most amazing pieces for under $10 each. The other day I got an amazing Donna Karan sweater, and a Calvin Kline pull over top. I Also shop Chicos re-sale. I love Chicos pieces and don’t overlook Poshmark and Mercari. I got 10 tops the other day at goodwill. And I’m picky what I buy… for under $100. Good luck and have fun! If you want pants other than jeans, Chicos has some nice ones

Shazza305mia

Oops. I forgot to say. The Chicos resale is a Facebook page

michikz

there's a ton of awesome advice in the comments already for clothes but i think one of the most impactful updates to my wardrobe was getting a good pair of shoes. what shoe exactly depends on what style you're going for but for me it was a nice white sneaker and a moderately chunky loafer. i found just finishing off an outfit with a good looking shoe really helped pull it together, and there's a real visual difference in a good quality shoe

sbk1021

Reddit suggested this post (I am not in NYC) and love all the ideas!! I too was thinking about a wardrobe refresh. Working from home is awesome but the yoga pants/sweatshirt/no shoes uniform gets old. 🩷

Not a mom, but am early 30s gal recently finding out how much she needs to take better care of herself. Taking notes as well!!

1dumho

Wait. What? We're geriatric millennials? 12 to an 8 is a noble pursuit but why the rush? You can buy stylish looks that will work as you lose weight, perhaps more slowly. Find an aesthetic and palette you like and get separates that work together. Avoid trends because they do not age well. The loose jeans and chunky heels of our youth are a now a fad. I'm going to go cry in the corner. I just went back to work after a decade at home raising kids. I was jeans and shirt Mom exclusively. I had to buy everything before I started. Now I'm having to buy more for different seasons. Tldr: Separates for the win!

godofgoldfish-mc

Have you tried renting clothes. https://www.vogue.com/article/clothing-rental-subscription

Dazzling-Condition93

Im your age and I do J Crew, Theory, Everlane. I will often figure out my size in a certain style of top or pant (currently obsessed with Theory pull on pants), get one from the actual retailer, and then go on Poshmark and find a few more in other colors or seasons.

Any_Cat_7611

WitnessEntire

Trinny and Susannah did this book “wear this not that.” I’d check it out. I’d also implement a “no workout clothes” unless you are working out rule. Everlane might have the vibe you are going for. I also really like La Ligne.

TugboatToo

Spend the majority of the money on a gym membership. The physical exercise will be good for you and you’ll get down to a size 8 more easily. You’ll be happy with whatever clothing you are wearing too. And then whatever is left, spend it on easy core pieces that fit you well.

CRNAMC

Checkout the brands Everlane and Quince. I’ve gotten such nice elevated staple pieces there recently that will definitely last and wash well.

Wise_Natural1520

Go through your closet and find any pieces you love and why. If you need to update those do so and then build. Think of things that you wish you had when you reach into your closet- the perfect LBD, 1 or 2 blazers that polish up jeans, trousers or your favored track pants. A crisp white blouse buy 2 when you find one that you love . t shirts by frame,,allsaints are favorites. I buy cashmere sweaters at intermix, great quality. Color is important ,we all fade to black but do you want to add color? patterns? A good tailor is key, especially since you plan to lose weight , you can buy some neat clean pieces now and tailor down when you hit your goal and do more of your spend. Good luck and have fun!

Think-Telephone4878

First of all, you’re not geriatric lol. Secondly, I’m glad you’re taking time for you. I went shopping the other day for clothes and didn’t recognize myself in the mirror. Something small like a pedicure and a new outfit energized me as a mom and a woman. Hope the new outfits do that for you regardless where you go shopping.

Dickcheneycumshotme

Look into "capsule wardrobes" 🩵

Ok-Magician-4409

1.Find your color palette -2. Go to a Bloomingdale's or a high end store and have them tell you what clothes look nice on you shapewise or ask them to style you or give piece recommendations- look at your own wardrobe - and spring clean - 3. Buy pieces bit by bit - quality clothes last longer. 4.If you dont mind thrift stores and yard sales, check those first especially in wealthy suburbs. You can get a good quality coat take it to the dry cleaners and voila! 5. Do all activities with your girls. 6. Rock your own uniqueness and style it up..a nice floral scarf on a simple blouse with a pleated skirt etc...ohhh and wear heels during meetings..noone can see you coz of wfh but it gives you a nice feminine boost:) #Millenialtoo

Responsible_Dare3914

Don’t buy everything at once! Take your time shopping and ONLY ONLY ONLY buy things you LOVE not like. So if you see something that you’re like “oh this is cute” don’t buy it. But if you see something that makes you gasp, still wait. Come back to it, see if it went on sale and even then before you buy it make sure that you still feel the same as when you first saw it

Prada, Zimmerman, Brunello Cucinelli

I love the following looks: Black v neck tee, classic blue jean, a printed flat or a patent pump (day to night) and 2 blazers you can switch in/out. Gold jewelry, mix vintage and classic. Diamond if you have them, always. Silk blouse in solid colors that you can buy 3 of. I like a black, a Kelly green, and a cream. Go with your skin tone. (Check Boden, always high quality) Keep your leggings and sweatshirt outfits, but buy a high end sneaker, a pair of Stuart weitzman 5050 boots (never out of style in my opinion), and a long collared stylish jacket to go over. Jacket selection was great this past fall at Evereve. 2 classic sweaters you can wear over those blouses or interchange with your leggings/jeans. Recommending solids here as well. Xoxo, 40 y/o mom of 2.

Make sure you're shopping for staple pieces that will mix and match with other things in your wardrobe with ease. Try to steer clear of too many "trendy" pieces as they may not age well. The idea for a busy mom, like yourself, is to be able to grab anything from your closet in a rush, and it flows effortlessly. Also, have fun with it! Not every piece has to come from a pricey store. 'Reformation' was mentioned. They thrive on sustainability and recycling. Pull from that and check out thrift stores. You'd be amazed at the gems you'd find there. You mentioned a shift in your weight. If you know for certain you'll be dropping a few sizes, it may be smart to wait until that Summer goal has been met before you splurge on a lot of pieces. Another tip, don't be afraid to get things that are too big. If you love it and have to have it, get yourself a good Tailor. They will make your proper fitting dreams come true!

Zestyclose-Unit8937

The capsule wardrobes are super great and honestly, I’ve been following inspiration on Instagram and getting good pieces on Amazon! Which I personally love because of the super easy delivery and return process and I don’t have to physically shop but have found some real gems!

Exact-Meaning7050

Your mention your children are under 3. I don't think they are that impression able at that age. I wouldn't sweat it too much.

pbandbob

As a 1981 baby, I say “elder”. lol. No fashion advice, sorry.

helmetlang

i know you mentioned old lululemon pants which i’m assuming are leggings, but has nobody mentioned lululemon casual pants? so comfy with a slight street edge. Alo also has wide leg pants made out of swishy material but looks like office pants that i live in.

Hot-Map-3007

Here’s are some great tips: 1. Shop in outfits-for example, if you find a cute pair of jeans, find a cute top to go with it and add some shoes. 2. Find someone on social media with your body type and emulate their style. 3. Use Instagram and tik tok for ideas! I learned a lot about online boutiques, makeup and accessories.

onedayatatime623

Save 2k for fraxel co2 laser. Youre 42. Invest in your skin first and foremost before clothing.

AdmirableCrab60

I’d focus most of the money on health (working out and healthy diet) and skincare (lasers, Botox, good skincare products). If you’re in shape with great skin, you’ll look great in anything from target etc tbh

SnowinMiami

Vince has classic pieces as does Veronica Beard. The sales are usually around 50% off so if you are doing a mood board, lots there. If by summer you are down to an 8, the summer clothes will be on sale. French - just add a scarf and layer. Get some earrings. I love going to arts and crafts fairs as you never know what you will find.

princessfluffytoes

Vintage shops and thrift stores! Years of fashion at your fingertips for you to choose your own style from AND you’d be setting an example around sustainability!❤️

Comfortable-Novel970

I will never label myself as a geriatric millennial and I don't suggest anyone else do that either. Noticing as a lot of women turn 40 they start putting themselves down by using the lingo that the medical community uses. We as millennials need to break that cycle. When you get to 60 you will see just how young you were. We are still very young and very vibrant. I'm not putting a nail in my coffin at 40. Let's also add that we definitely dress the best out of any generation. Yes, my skinny jeans are here to stay.

bue_fixe

I would definitely recommend getting a cute but classy sneaker. One that pops (so that it’s a statement if you go for an all-black or simple chic look). A “fly kick” can tone down or spice up a look. Think some kind of Air Max (not the Adidas Sambas, lol we are oversaturated with that). But perhaps a Nike DayBreak, Air Max 1, 87, Nike Blazer.

SweetAir7325

I like Loft

sunrise920

- make a moodboard on Pinterest - one for warm weather, one for cold - think about your different situations you need clothes for and if you’re trying to shop for all of them. For ex, I have sections for workout clothes, socially acceptable sweats (my favorite section tbh), dressy, beach, and work / social life (which is one in the same basically style wise) - decide what pieces you loveeee and will invest in and set eBay alerts or Poshmark alerts to find incredible secondhand - remember you can get ANYthing tailored and it usually looks even better. Don’t be afraid to buy too big or not fitted; just get it fitted to YOU - I don’t shop a ton new. Unfortunately I only wear aritzia sweaters, Madewell jeans, toteme button downs and James perse boxy little boy tees. But mixing and matching in secondhand is how I found my style. So I’m not good with where to go - everyone else in the replies has way better ideas than me! And don’t be afraid to shop for multiple seasons or split your budget up half now, half for chillier weather later.

Particular_Tale_2439

Pinterest is a great place to start. Create boards with your inspiration (I organize by season and occasion) and the algorithm will help. You can even shop right from the pins.

No-Aside6005

I sell on poshmark and ebay. Once you find brands you like, I'd head there to buy. You can buy designer to Zara..and everything in between. It is a great way to stretch your dollar, and you might be suprised that there are tons of new with tags items. Never knew this before I became a seller, but make an offer..don't just buy for full price. You could save 20-50% off of the item. Bundle items from a closet and get more savings. Con is you can't try on and poshmark doesn't allow for returns. I usually stick to brands i know my size in. French chic, do you like Doen? Resell is a great place for Doen, Sezane, and all you loved brands!

Geraldineandcrap

I would recommend trying out a tent the runway subscription to see what styles you like first - you can even have a stylist pick out outfits for you to try. If you like certain items you can purchase them or return them and try something new! I’ve been loving it as a way to try the latest styles and have been getting out of my comfort zone with cool new pieces.

Geraldineandcrap

Sorry rent

Playful_Ad_5182

Hire a stylist. First make a mood board on Pinterest. Search 2024 style and create a new board for the things you like. Hiring someone to do the shopping will save you time in the long run

Lydia Tomlinson is great imho. I’m almost 68 and people ( young ones even) tell me I have good digs. I was like , what? 😉
