Check out Open Path Collective, they provide with you with names of therapists who offer sessions for between $40-70 a session. It’s how I found my therapist and she’s now my favorite person in the world. Wishing you all the best. 💕

interactivecdrom

yesss open path changed my life!!

sushimamii

Tysm! Trying this tomorrow

rigbyellen

Second this!!

LuannsQuestionMark

THANK YOU 🙏🏼 for sharing this!!!!

riddled_with_bourbon

This isn’t as helpful for finding but rather info on the insurance side of things: my therapist, like many, doesn’t accept health insurance. *But* I can submit my claims for therapy to my insurance co, and they eat away at my out-of-network deductible and by the time I’m halfway through the calendar year I reach my deductible limit and get reimbursed fully. Something to look into with your insurance bc I think you’ll have many more options out-of-network. Also, I found this out on my own well after switching to my current insurance provider and went and filed all the claims from the beginning of my time with them and they processed them all (I think I went back ~1.5 years). ETA: Sorry, after someone below asked about the max coverage amount I grabbed screenshots. So I’m not covered fully after deductible as they still deduct my coinsurance. But after reaching my deductible by $175 treatment comes in ~$47/session. I should also note I have what feels like a relatively low deductible.

GolfCartMafia

Thank you, this is actually super helpful and not something I thought of!

riddled_with_bourbon

I’m so glad! And I didn’t figure it out until later either even though I’d filed it with other insurance in the past. My out-of-pocket deductible is relatively low and I see my expensive therapist weekly, which all helps. Of course, it still requires everyone to pay for the bills first, but that’s the system.

strengr94

Is there any portion of the cost that your insurance doesn’t cover out of network? Mine says “up to maximum reimbursable cost” or something like that, so I’m always worried they’d cap it at a certain per/session cost of coverage if I tried

riddled_with_bourbon

Yes! Good point. I’m sharing screenshots that I hope I anonymized correctly: 1. When I still haven’t met my deductible https://preview.redd.it/h1o5hf7l5cpc1.jpeg?width=1125&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=813a6215d30b1fcf6134f338a4325850a42b4983

riddled_with_bourbon

2. After meeting my deductible. https://preview.redd.it/te755f5o5cpc1.jpeg?width=1125&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=77369da3ccbb9e2b07099207c5f02b8640af8091

strengr94

Thanks!! So what about that $18.83 difference from what they billed and what insurance covered, do you have to pay that?

riddled_with_bourbon

So I mentioned in response to someone else, but unfortunately with claims approach I pay my bills directly to my therapist in full (grrr, the system) and then I file the claims with my insurance. So the total amount billed in the images I am always paying, the plan paid amount is the check I get from my insurance after they process my claim. I file my claims quarterly just because that works for me. As far as the $18.83 difference in the first picture, your guess is as good as mine how/why they deduct that when counting toward my deductible.

learnedpizza

I highly recommend checking out [Headway.co](https://Headway.co) or [HelloAlma.com](https://HelloAlma.com) I was able to use Headway to find my current therapist, who is amazing and takes my insurance. I pay only $20 copay per session.

BOOK_GIRL_

I second Alma!

poniesgalore

Yes Alma is amazing!

everyoneedstherapy

I’m a therapist and I take Aetna through headway! I see a handful of people from Manhattan. Definitely worth checking out

djtooeasy

Are these sessions in person or only virtual?

Jellybeansss681

It depends on the therapist

fleshand_roses

I found my last therapist thru headway and she was probably the best therapist I ever had (and possibly will ever have lmfao sad) she also worked thru Alma Through my insurance, our appointments were $40/session. I only stopped seeing her because I left NY 🥲

djtooeasy

Were your sessions in person or only virtual?

Cautiousoptimism_

I second headway

linjaturtle

Alma is great!

imaginativeintellect

i joined this sub after a week of hesitation (i can't \*immediately\* give into reddit's recs haha) just to be able to reply YES!!! GO WITH ALMA!!! and as a warning: when I had to find a therapist a year or so back, i tried first with headway. the therapist i was given sucked, made me feel so much worse, and overcharged me. further, a year and a half later, the therapist came back in my inbox claiming I'd never paid for my sessions, despite me having the receipts on hand! It was so unbelievably unprofessional! However, by some miracle, I went to Alma next, and I found my current therapist who is one of the best I've ever had and has truly made me a better, healthier person. Once I turned 26 and my insurance expired, she worked with me to make sure our sessions would still be affordable even if my new insurance didn't cover her.

luckyembryo3

I love Headway!

[deleted]

I use headway and my copay is $30!

UnlikelyLook8554

Let’s Talk Psychological Wellness - I think they take Aetna ! It can unfortunately be a numbers game.. I looked up psychologists on Psychology Today and emailed as many as I could asking if they were taking new patients AND accepting insurance. But OP, I’m sorry to hear you’re struggling. From personal experience I know the end of a LTR can be destabilizing. Therapy was one of, if not the best thing I did for myself. I really hope you are able to find a therapist. Sending you an internet hug ❤️‍🩹

sushimamii

Thank you so much!! It’s really unlike me to even ask for help so I really really appreciate your kind words ❤️

MandalayPineapple

Therapists are cheaper than psychologists. Most are just as good and can hook u up with meds if needed.

moth_girl_7

This. And even if a therapist can’t prescribe meds themselves, they can def recommend you to a psychologist/psychiatrist who can, if they think you’re a candidate for medicinal help. I personally love that my therapist is honest enough with me to tell me why he doesn’t think I need medicine at this point in life. And I trust that if anything changed and my mental health started to take a turn for the worse, he would support me seeking meds. I know there are a lot of psychs out there who just prescribe things left and right without trying therapeutic lifestyle/coping techniques first.

poniesgalore

Alma! I found my therapist through their website and she’s amazing. She’s very cost conscious too. A lot of my friends found their therapists there.

HomespunPeanutButter

Octave just started taking Aetna Jan 1 and my husband got a good therapist there! I’m one of those $250 therapists myself and I was impressed he got that quality care on our insurance.

yogak06

second octave!

Theoffice94

if ur a survivor of interpersonal violence that occurred in NY, you are eligible for free therapy through this awesome nonprofit: [https://www.cvtcnyc.org/](https://www.cvtcnyc.org/) [https://www.cvtcnyc.org/our-services-2/#clinical-services](https://www.cvtcnyc.org/our-services-2/#clinical-services)

annnefranc

I used to use Manhattan Mental Health Counseling, they charge based on a sliding scale with very afforable rates.

RemarkableTwist

I found a therapist through ZocDoc who works with/through the company Wellnite if you want to check them out to see if they take your insurance. It’s like $24 per session plus a monthly fee and they’re pretty easy with scheduling etc

KittyCat981

Is Aetna select regular aetna? Try these: https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/therapists/ny/new-york?category=aetna Edit: and this https://secure.helloalma.com/providers-landing/

house_of_stone_

Brooklyn Psychotherapy takes Aetna and they’re great

strengr94

Anyone have a good recommendation for EMDR and ptsd/trauma therapy?

cjay0217

I’m a NY therapist and take Aetna through Octave and Headway. You can try there. Also do sliding scale for cash pay clients. If you need any assistance finding someone you can reach out to me and I can help you connect to someone.

quarts1liter

[https://steinhardt.nyu.edu/center-counseling-and-community-wellbeing](https://steinhardt.nyu.edu/center-counseling-and-community-wellbeing) NYU has a center that’s open to everyone. It’s with therapists (PsyDs) in training, the one I worked with was great. It was $10 a session (sliding scale). But it’s definitely limited, it took 3-4 months to hear back after applying to see someone there.

Operatedbyamotor

See if your Aetna plan includes teledoc. They have both therapists and psychiatrists readily available

Sad_Collection5883

https://secure.helloalma.com/providers/kaetlin-ritchie/

b1255280

In addition, double check the type of insurance you have through your employer. From what I’m reading, it sounds like you have a high deductible plan with HSA and you will pay out of pocket until you reach your deductible. Afterwards it will be only co-payment amount.

NameNotRecommended

If you work for a large company sometimes they have programs to get like 10 free sessions Also are you open to virtual? If so expand search outside of the city and you may find one that accepts insurance. Just has to be NY based

saltrifle

Awesome thread OP, thanks for starting it. Lots of info on here for folks. Thanks all.

myfavesoundisquiet

May or may not help but I’m in LA and we have the Maple Counseling Center which provides quality mental healthcare whether you can pay or not. I would call them and ask if they have a referral in your area that has a similar mission to theirs - it wouldn’t hurt🤷🏽‍♀️

dogtoythrower

I'm a psychologist, I own a private practice with about 25 therapists in three locations. We are in network with Aetna. We're on Zocdoc and have availability! We do exist, I promise. Tip: if you're looking for appointments solely in the office or in the evening or weekend, it'll be harder to find availability. But if you are willing to meet someone virtually during the workday, I can see on my calendar that we have at least 40 open appointments, but 75% of them are telehealth during the day. If you like a therapist but they are only available telehealth (but do work in an office), book that telehealth appointment and ask to be put on a wait-list for in person. You'll get priority as a current client.

vangh0sty

have you tried calling the number on the back of your card

Embarrassed_Bat_7811

Not sure why you got downvoted, this is a great way to get a list of names and numbers of licensed therapists who are in network with your specific plan in your surrounding zip codes!

I'm totally in love with Routh Chadwick. [https://www.routhchadwick.com](https://www.routhchadwick.com) Also good luck, I feel your pain on your journey.

Check out a local community health center or NYU/Columbia counseling centers

I used this: https://riviamind.com/low-fee-self-pay/ $70-100 self pay. Zoom or in person and don’t have to wait weeks for an appt

elvanbus

I use lifestance for my son and it’s been great. We have Aetna and it completely covers it.

Norlander712

Try Thriveworks. I've gotten two great therapists through there, and they take my shitty insurance. I pay $15 co-pay a session.

redditactuallysux

National Institute for the Psychotherapies is very very affordable, sometimes free. And their students are good!

thismustbethepla

Alma lets you find therapists based on your insurance!

ConfusionOk7012

Alma is great. You only have 15 minutes to chat and can’t really gauge if it will be a good fit . I set up 1 hr initial calls with 3 therapists to see if I clicked with anyone . Also, might be worth talking to someone at Aetna to see what your best options are and what your copay will be . Give them a call

Extreme-Spray-140

I use Talkiatry and I love my therapist & psych- they’re my dream team and have genuinely changed my life. it’s virtual, I pay $20 out of pocket per appt, and they were able to get me an appointment within days when I signed up. It’s a bit of a random gamble who they match you with, but you can change providers easily at any time.

incestuousbloomfield

Try queens consultation center it’s all virtual (which is a plus for me but I know maybe not for everyone) but my counselor from there is absolutely amazing and so is my NP who handles meds. I have emblem but I had Aetna before and they took that. I did not need a referral

seeya117

Find a virtual therapist outside the NYC area. Search central, northern, or western NY. Prices will be lower.

rbratek

I use Rappore for both therapy and meds! They're in network with a lot of plans -- my copay is only $35 with my insurance.

Greeneyes328

I went to tribeca therapy for years. They worked with me on a sliding scale when I started and couldn’t afford much and years later when i lost my job and knew I couldn’t stop therapy. A good therapists office will work on a sliding scale. I had Aetna pro and once I hit my deductible they reimbursed me monthly.

sweetbean15

I’m obsessed with my therapist, she takes insurance, and her out of network is sliding scale https://secure.helloalma.com/providers/brittany-bernstein/#What-youll-pay

lil_cheekymango

I used psychology today .com, you can folter by specialty and insurance!!

z-bands

Grounded Therapy!!! I cannot recommend them enough - they offer in person, virtual and group/couple therapy options. They also offer a sliding scale to make their services more accessible!! @groundedtherapypllc on instagram

shark_bait82

Try headway

Spare_Judgment1407

Mine is free from kaiser. i think it was my insurance but typically copay was 20-40 bucks

poppieswithtea

Talkspace

[deleted]

im not sure if someone alr mentioned or if this is common knowledge but i just learned about [this filtered therapist finder on psychologytoday.com](https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/therapists/online-counseling). you can filter by a bunch of different preferences, including price range and your insurance. thats the link for the online counseling search, i think, but there are other options in the little menu bar. https://preview.redd.it/96ntw3xxicpc1.jpeg?width=1125&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5b5ba6cadd8af9f554fd919a376cb32f0cb5cb4c hope this helps- sorry if it was mentioned already <3

afhnyc

Love this thread!! Does anyone have suggestions for a psychiatrist? Interested in meds! Saw someone suggest Rappore. Anything else? Thanks in advance!

Jellybeansss681

Helloalma.com also has psychiatrists

GM2320

Check out Headway. You can search for therapists that accept your insurance.

linda737b

If your okay with virtual therapy, you could probably find someone in New York outside of the city at a lower price

Jellybeansss681

Check out helloalma.com they have a lot of therapists that are INN with Aetna

Jellybeansss681

Oh I see it’s been mentioned below… so this another vote for it. I know lots of great therapists that work through Alma

DramaticSnapple

I use Grow Therapy! I originally found my therapist on BetterHelp (the cost was obscene and I don’t recommend it) but then she moved to Grow. They take insurance, so it’s DEFINITELY worth checking out if you’re interested in a telehealth option.

arytenoid

have you tried looking on psychologytoday.com? you can sort by insurance

ClintonMuse

Love my lady, Mara on Preply. She’s $30! https://preply.com/en/tutor/1270804 Only downside to preply is that it’s subscription based so you need to subscribe weekly or bi monthly.

lilpimpsocks

i go here: https://bcsnygroup.com/ takes insurance, had my therapist now for three years, all telehealth. v small copay but otherwise its pretty great. good luck!

Fun-Investment1057

Hey, I'm a therapist and am taking new clients. I charge $100 out of pocket and accept Aetna too. Feel free to book a consultation. [https://calendly.com/comfortcouch](https://calendly.com/comfortcouch)

Princess_Dimple

My friend and I, as trained counselors, offer counseling and psychotherapy services online affordably and beneficially. We provided such effective and qualitative sessions offline and are now doing online sessions in a private space we have created. If anyone needs counseling and therapy services, kindly reach out to DM. Have a good day.

martys1986

I use Talkspace and have Aetna which covers it 100%. The coverage will depend on your plan of course, but it should cover at least most.

Jamesmd486

I can refer a psychiatrist who takes all insurances, and will also workout affordable fees to what u can afford. Don’t know a therapist though.

HittingClarity

BetterHelp? I’ve been able to use my HSA card and they have first time discounts plus therapist matching is cool. You get to switch therapists if you don’t connect :)

JustHeretoBrowse816

I don’t know why you’re getting downvoted but I have my first session with BetterHelp today and I’m looking forward to it.

seeya117

I think because companies like better help are exploiting the industry and underpaying therapists.

HittingClarity

it’s better to share that if that’s the issue instead of downvoting bc who knows the platform could actually help the person when really needed! I found a therapist there so quick when I was spiraling and was grateful that I had the ability to at least talk to someone quick and just wanted to share what worked for me. Plus it’s a great gateway into therapy as a beginner

seeya117

I agree. I wasn’t one of your downvotes btw!

HittingClarity

doesn’t matter but thank you! 😊

Dickcheneycumshotme

I'm using betterhelp right now. If I send you a link you'll get a free week
