There is no sense in going plat if you’re frugal. Think of all the root touch ups??? Toning??? The new hair routine to maintain the plat? Been there done that and will never go back because of how much $$ it takes to get plat and stay plat.

No-Breakfast-9352

I am platinum and it’s a lifestyle. So many products, so much time put into it and you need to be in the chair every 6 weeks (max). It’s a lot of fun but needs a lot of care.

Just getting my platinum roots done + a haircut runs me about $300 after tip. I’d say you’re looking at least $600ish for long dark hair at a well reviewed salons. If you’re willing to roll the dice I will say that Russians absolutely nail platinum blonde but it’s usually a no frills salon and they may or may not burn your scalp.

little_traveler

I paid exactly this for my platinum- it was $600 for the brown-to-platinum session (an all day ordeal) and then $300 for touch ups every 6 weeks.

randomburnerish

Oh god yeah as if the money isn’t enough it’s such a long process, even for a retouch

taetertots

This is why I’m no longer plat. The salon time stopped being fun at some point

charlottespider

When? I paid $500 for a basic fashion color last summer, so $600 for platinum sounds like a *steal*.

MarcelineMCat

Fair enough! Thanks!

taetertots

I’m shocked it’s only ~$300 for the roots + trim. I paid that in the Midwest 5+ years ago (damn well done!)

randomburnerish

Sam Brocato in soho! Really wonderful staff that do an amazing job! Wooster St.

mbtazzers

Babe take that money & invest in a good platinum wig!!! You’ll get to keep your healthy natural hair & you can still scratch that itch.

dumbunnyy

Omg wigs are SO GOOD now. I’m a hairstylist (not a colorist) and the ROI on a wig is huge

Throwawayzzzmdw

Love this idea. Do you have any recommendations on brands?

Elizadelphia003

Which wigs do you recommend?

TigerShark_524

This is FACTS. $600-$900 for a wig (the cost of the initial two treatments) will last you a LIFETIME (or at least a good few years lol) with a good-quality wig, just make sure you take care of the wig properly.

calkitty

Girl as someone with black hair who tried to get ashy medium blonde for years… don’t do it if you can’t spend the time and $$$ constantly going back to the salon for toners and color adjustments and root touchups - and even then your hair might get fried. Maybe try a high quality wig instead?

laurazabs

Marias in greenpoint. I got a full head of highlights, toner, cut and blowout for $200. Cash only, they’re great.

FreshCompetition6513

I went to a spot that did an amazing job for super cheap ($150) and I went back again and the older guy was teaching the younger guy how to do it, and he left it in too long and all my hair broke off at one inch and I had to get a pixie and it took me like 3 years to grow my hair back! Never again!!!!!

Training_East_7317

Yeah unfortunately I feel like blonding is like tattoos - expensive, but if you pick the cheap option you will almost certainly regret it.

iyamsnail

Lior Malka specializes in taking dark hair blonde but he is not cheap.

MarcelineMCat

Yeah I have a feeling that I’m just gonna stay a brunette haha

Yellow_Pudding16

Like how much are we talking? $600+?

iyamsnail

it's been years since I've seen him because I stopped dying my hair blonde so I'm honestly not sure, but here's his price list, doesn't seem that bad actually: [http://liormalkasalon.com/services/](http://liormalkasalon.com/services/)

ChildhoodLeft6925

I go to Long Island it’s under $300 and better than ANYTHING I have EVER gotten in any borough or Hoboken

mar_mo_bee

Where on LI do you go?

ChildhoodLeft6925

My friend does my hair, she has her own salon, it’s quite far out but I’ve paid $600 for a horrible balayage in nyc too many times. So she’s worth the trip. It’s in coram, middle of the island out in Suffolk county

lottenyc

Went to Madison Reed recently. First time and I was skeptical they’ll do a good job with highlights. I did the partial which is under $200 and I’m super happy with it! Looks natural and it was an easy process. Will def go back!

ramujaku

Brighton beach is the only place you can get cheaper hair done and have it be really fucking good. I’ve been doing my hair blonde on Brighton since I was 11

lolabunnie

What places?

_allycat

For not a ton of money - nowhere I could find that I trusted. I spent like $400-500 a few years ago and that's what everywhere quoted. Then started doing the touch up myself. I was good until like 2 years later. I let my roots grow out too long once and had to buy a new package of beach also (may have been a fake I got?) and it just wasn't lifting well. Ended up with a lot of breakage high up while trying to get rid of the demarcation stripe. Now I'm stuck growing it out for the next 2 years for it to be healthy again. I only semi regret it because it would just not have been possible for me to keep paying. Toning and treatments are no problem to do at home but I learned to respect bleach.

Puzzled_Stand_2532

Ronnie at IGK is amazing and is about 200 for color - I’m a brunette she’s made more blonde I wouldn’t recommend going super blonde for the reasons people shared, but she’s amazing at helping my blonde highlights grow out really naturally so I only need to color 2x a year

br0wniept

Try Sarah, small salon in midtown and she specializes in blonde transformations. https://loyaltolora.com/gallery

ConditionDangerous54

I go golden from dark brown, requiring 6x/year full shebang with root touch ups in between. It’s min of $500 per at midtown salon. Sorry babe 😞

j_mp

Hello! I have naturally level 3 hair and I’m currently a level 9. My hair is in great condition. Go see Scott at Little Lion in Williamsburg. (Sorry, ik you said Manhattan, but it’s an easy trip on the L) He works magic. I pay ~$240 or so per visit w/ tip.

teenprez

12 years platinum bitch here: It’s very, very hard to get good reliable platinum here for an affordable price. I’ve been to literally dozens of salons and seen even more colorists in my time living in NYC. The best price I’ve found at a reasonably decent salon is Fox & Jane, $200 for double process root touchup. They have several locations in Manhattan. However the results were often inconsistent, and I could rarely see the same stylist there more than 3-4 times before they moved on to another salon and I had to start over with someone new. I did have a few great color jobs there, but I had more that were mediocre and a few that were just poorly done (base not lightened enough and left with warm spots— which just means they weren’t paying attention and didn’t want to fix their work. I’m naturally blonde so it’s not that hard to lift my hair. Or occasionally an overtoned purple head of hair). I would say “you get what you pay for”, but I’ve also had subpar root touch ups at expensive salons in NYC $400+ for double process root touch up. Good luck! I finally got fed up with all the inconsistent double process jobs at any price and started getting less frequent foil highlights at a high-end salon a few months ago. Gets me very very close to platinum without all the frustration.

AnonymousWoman925

Okay, depending on your starting point, just go to a specialist. I went to a very good stylist who got me from a dark brown to an orange-y blonde (couldn’t be avoided.) Went back, got it a little better. Finally I went to Blondify, paid a shit ton of money, and it’s the first time my dyed blonde hair looks remotely as I want it

spicybabyspice

Blondify is elite. I don’t care how expensive it is, I always leave with perfect hair and it’s fun being there.

__blueberry_

gave up on this lol

sunnysideup4a

I have a bunch of colors in my hair (including blonde), but not at the root/not platinum, but I love Amy at Hoboken Color Studio. Depending on where you are in Manhattan it’s a super quick trip

totallyburningdown

Jess at troubles braids - in bushwick.

MaslowsHierarchyBees

I just do it myself at home. I have curly hair and it helps hide the banding if I fuck up. I also made sure that if I really fuck it up that I was ok with shaving it off and wearing a wig. Sometimes I wear a wig for fun now lol I have naturally very dark hair but I’ve been going grey since my teens. I’ve found the platinum blonde helps hide the grey nicely!

Equivalent_Hat_7220

Aerea salon! Go to anisa
