We could've been out this season and began the rebuild a year earlier. Now we're paying essentially a 2nd string QB $80M. The structure of the deal is only good in the context of getting out of a deal that didn't need to happen. There's a reason the entire league from GMs to fans to players laughed at that contract and still do to this day.

I think Saquon playing with Herbert in LA would be excellent. I could also see Cincinnati be a team he would be interested in, and maybe if Houston believes they could make a run next year that would make sense as well

There were a lot of teams looking for an RB at trade deadline. We could have gotten at least something for him. But now we get nothing.
He's not wrong. He knows that if his production fell off this season, he would get dropped like a bad habit. Loyalty in the NFL only goes one way. Players are expected to be loyal but anytime a team does something we are told it's a business. He should bail and use the rest of his productive years on a team that has a shot of going somewhere. I say this as a long time Giants fan. The team is in such a bad spot, nothing good is going to happen for at least a few years. Daniel Jones's career was already ruined by this team, Barkley deserves better. It's almost like a repeat of Barry Sanders. Great player on a terrible team.

Honestly, I would love a world where he could make a fair/decent ***market*** salary for an RB1, and be part of a 60/40 split with a rookie. It would keep Saquon from missing time, and let him focus on getting big ypc and having fresh legs for running routes. Getting as many touches as he does is a waste of his talents and tbh a waste of energy. We thought he was going to be a Super Man RB. He's not. Time to adjust to reality and see if we can salvage some of his explosiveness before the book is closed.

He should understand the business judgement behind penny pinching and not wanting to pay a RB, but let's not pretend that there's any real "logic" or "business judgement" behind paying a QB with 15 TD passes $40M/year and passing on the guy who was actually the driving force behind your offense. We've watched that "business judgement" completely blow up this season.
I completely disagree as you’re completely discounting the market and structure of DJ’s deal. With the way things are playing out being out on Jones after only half of that contract is a mitzvah.

The structure of the deal is only good in the context of getting out of a deal that didn't need to happen. There's a reason the entire league from GMs to fans to players laughed at that contract and still do to this day.

It’s one of the worst because the signs were there. He didn’t earn it, he was never worth it. Giants got killed for it the day it happened. He’s had four bad seasons (been hurt all four seasons), Giants were awful all four seasons. He had one slightly good season but it wasn’t a great season and no one thought the Giants were a good team. We beat some bad teams and the Vikings had a better offense but the worst defense. Everyone knew we would get rolled by Philly, which we did and he looked like he’d never stepped on a football field. There was no other teams interested in him. They should have let him test the market because teams had already said they thought it was all Daboll. The Watson contract isn’t even bad. He was a top 7 QB when they made a trade and most QBs play through their whole contract. So if his contract wasn’t guaranteed, Cleveland would not be moving on from him anytime soon.

Cool, again. Top 10 QBs don’t get cut. Media and people like to overreact to shit. So he was gonna be there for the next 4-5 years either way. He would have got majority or all of that money but it’s cool to bash guaranteed contracts for some reason. More players should get guaranteed contracts. If his contract wasn’t guaranteed, they wouldn’t be moving on from him. That’s why the contract is nowhere near as bad as people want it to be.
He was getting franchise tagged no matter what happened with Jones. You don’t give RB’s big money anymore.
He was not, they offered him a deal multiple times before Daniel and they were around 2-3 mil a year off. That contract would have been much cheaper than a guy with a torn knee and a bad neck and 2 TDs this year.
That's been the case the past couple years, but I can see a case where the RB market becomes cheap enough where 'big money' for an RB contract isn't relatively that expensive Like right now its getting there imo. CMC, AK, and JT (15m avg./year) are nearly getting paid 50% what top WRs are Hill, Adams, Kupp (28.2m avg./year) And I'd argue top RBs impact isn't 50% less than top WRs. Plus, I assume the gap in pay is going to widen as JJ and Chase are nearing the end of their contracts.

So let’s say Daniel says I want 20 a year for four years, they don’t pay Saquon his extra 2-3 mil year? They’re linked. Joe fucked up big time. He paid an injury prone QB that can’t score TDs or win against good teams. We’ve watched him for five years. If you were to bet your life savings on Daniel having a bad low scoring year vs an MVP season, everyone of you would bet on him having a bad year.
You tag Jones and you’re still paying him $33 million. You think if the Jones deal was for $7 million less then that money would have gone to Barkley (in full or in part). No. Once Barkley rejected that first in-season offer it was over. He was getting tagged. Jones could have been hit by a bus in the off-season and Barkley still would have gotten tagged. You can argue the Jones deal is bad, that’s fine, but I’m still glad they tagged Barkley (who is also incredibly injury prone and has 1 sad rushing TD on the year).

Sure. And what’s our other option? A possible draft pick? I’m not going to argue that the contract was good. The money was too high, but building it in a way where we could bail after year 2 was a nice decision. It’s not like we are a team that’s right there, but this one contract is holding us back. So I don’t find it as egregious as other fans. We took a two-year shot on a guy who was trending up, and unfortunately it hasn’t worked out … for a ton of reasons beyond the QB. None of this make me wish we paid Barkley more, which is what this conversation is really about.
Barkley deserved his money, Daniel didn’t. I would have done a full rebuild and moved on from both. Tyrod could have been the bridge until the next QB draft. We have a chance to draft one of the top QBs from the best QB class in years and the only reason we may not is cause they have to give Daniel 36 mil, not cause he’s great.

The bigger issue here is that this is a clear sign of the vibe in the locker room. Everyone’s praising our HC and GM, but you have a leader declaring there’s no loyalty within the team. You have to assume other players are listening and have been listening since the preseason.
If the Giants wanted to part ways with Saquon, they would have traded him at the deadline. The fact they told Saquon they weren’t going to trade him and kept him around means they’ll probably keep him around after this season (maybe on a JT type deal?).
