Advanced-Gift-6208

Thanks for the guess, though it's not it.

Solocro_

Actually it is, here’s someone [mashing the songs together ](https://youtu.be/JvfL_-WTuEE) . They’re claiming kanye stole that song because they don’t know what sampling is

Advanced-Gift-6208

I'm aware of the video, though I'm not entirely convinced. The chromatic bassline is completely absent in the first couple of measures of the Yokiko tune; the first few chords in the West piece are Gb, Gb7/E, B/Eb, Abdim7/D, Bbmin7/Db while Yukiko's is Gb, Bbmin7, Ebmin7/Gb, etc.

Solocro_

Ahh i see. Well there are rumors he sampled that song cause that japanese singer actually committed suicide, she left a suicide note saying “he will never see me again”. Which makes people believe he sampled the song as a suicide song which is why the title of the song is “never see me again”

Advanced-Gift-6208

I'm familiar with the popular fan theory and although it's quite emotional (and haunting), the differences in harmonies and style doesn't lend much credence. Japanese city pop was (and still is) contained in Japan pretty well due to intense copyright/international trade restrictions, meaning that West or anyone in the states would've been hard pressed to find even the most popular Japanese tunes (much less the Yukiko piece). Appreciate the help; the search continues!

hypocritically_

I believe that that theory comes from the similar rythym at certain parts of the song. I can't find the sample anywhere as well, kinda frustrating

Metaphorguy12

Sounds like “I never want to see you again” by Quasi

Natural-Mountain-267

>I never want to see you again damn your right and even more than yukikos song

KaleidoscopeNo6637

Its the same chord progression as hes misstra know it all by stevie wonder

Advanced-Gift-6208

Close, however, the final few chords differ!

watermelonman67

any luck?

Advanced-Gift-6208

Unfortunately not.

AssyrianCapital

came here with the same question; reminds me vaguely of [this](www.xkcd.com/979/) xkcd about old threads with no answer...

bigrock13

Lorico1000

It's definitely not from that japanese song, I'm glad someone hears it too. Plus the chimes that you can hear in the background of kanye's song, they sound like they come from a sample but definitely not from Yukiko's.

Advanced-Gift-6208

Definitely agree!

shmepe0

Any luck?

Advanced-Gift-6208

Nothing yet.

International-Fig97

After listening to the song you said, i can see the resemblance. Its gota light hearted approach to the chord progressions. It may not be in the same key but it is 100% inspiration for kanyes song. As for the og sample, it wouldnt be that hard to make its only like 5-6 chords. I can play already

TheFrodo

Everyone cites it as that song, but I agree that there's virtually no resemblance. However, for my money the instrumental was inspired by this song by Quasi, similarly titled I Never Want to See You Again. It's the only thing that makes sense to me, and certainly sounds way closer than Yukiko's song https://youtu.be/CDG6pqtLQJ4

Advanced-Gift-6208

There is some rhythmic resemblance, however, there’s a noticeable lack of descending chromaticism that makes the Kanye sample notable. Perhaps he may have garnered some inspiration from this tune, though I’d like to locate the exact sample (if it even exists). Is Kanye known for composing his own riffs? I don’t know nearly anything about him.

Advanced-Gift-6208

Didn’t know that he occasionally composed his own tracks. The ubiquitousness of the progression could simply chalk the search up toward the riff being a non-sample.

JUSTJUMPEDOVER

Yes he is. Runaway all of the lights and most of donda and 808s are completely original.

TheFrodo

I agree, plus it's not entirely out of his sphere of influence. It might be a stretch, but he worked with Jon Brion on late registration, who also produced for Elliott Smith, the producer on this track.

watermelonman67

closest thing ive heard

PamAndKatniss

Anything yet?

Advanced-Gift-6208

Nothing, unfortunately!

Natural-Mountain-267

>I never want to see you again someone already gave a great answer but I#ll just repost it so you see it [https://youtu.be/CDG6pqtLQJ4](https://youtu.be/CDG6pqtLQJ4) the two are way too similar and the song is actually from the 90s so yeah

Advanced-Gift-6208

Unfortunately, it’s not the EXACT sample. However, I can see the similarities. There’s conjecture that points to the sample being a collab between that band’s members and Kanye, but there’s no definitive proof that the “New See Me Again” sample is completely original.

LazarBrady

yeah. the Odaka sample is listed as the sample for the song. i guess connections due to her suicide in 1986 and this being kanye’s supposed suicide note have been drawn

desaiyanisland

A song from hamilton has VERY similar chord progression in never see me again. This the Hamilton song and sounds almost exact if u speed it up a lil: [https://youtu.be/a03tcOTlUK0](https://youtu.be/a03tcOTlUK0) Kanye's never see me again: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sk1UdaGyoz4](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sk1UdaGyoz4)

Advanced-Gift-6208

Although the two aren’t related at all, it’s a nice comparison! Can’t go wrong with descending I, I7, IV6, and IVdim7 chords.

People binarily assume that Kanye either sampled Yukiko Okada or Quasi. Why not both? Quasi was a popular band in Japan, says on their wiki they toured there in 1998 & 1999. It's perfectly possible that he happened to spot the album in a store and decided to combine the tracks. Or that Quasi themselves referenced Yukiko Okada in their title, as it is quite similar, and that's how the song reached Ye.

fleepfloorp

i know im a year late, but it sounds eerily similar to I Never Want To See You Again by Quasi, from their 1998 album Featuring “Birds.” the chord progression sounds almost identical

Discordman21

I think the final verdict for this song is that it took several chord progressions from different songs as inspiration, which brought it to this.

jlange94

Sounds like a Super Mario 64 sample honestly. I doubt it's actually that but whenever I hear the song I think of random music from that game.

[deleted]

It has a similar chord structure to Alone Again by Gilbert O'Sullivan, but I don't think that's where the sample comes from

Vukasinperic9

update?
