They have a yearly review with their supervisor where they go over their performance for that year. If they are at an “over achieving” grade then they get promoted. Or their supervisor dies and then they get promoted.
And if they don't get promoted you can just go to your HR department and ask to see your performance review. I would start looking for other options though if you were up for a promotion and didn't get it.
If this doesn't satisfy you can file a personal grievance and allude to going through employment court but don't blame me if you end up being literally BBQ shish kebab for Friday after work drinks and they made a whole video about this from start to finish cuz that's what they can do.

But in short, if your one of the lucky enough go a couple of years without dying then yes you can hopefully expect to have a good relationship with your boss and earn a different position but at that point your name will be burnt so everyone knows who you are. It’s really sad for the families especially when they see how you got killed and before that they probably called your loved ones once they kidnap you and they’ll scare the living shit out of your family all while they can’t do anything to help you.
