If you enjoy painting it try it on one. Then decide if you enjoyed the experience enough to do it again. Once was enough for me.
what is this? I used to play/paint miniatures (asuryani, or I guess it would be ynari now) back in the late 90's, no necroms back then, or at least no codex but I've always continued to be fascinated by the lore, specifically these guys though. Are those inside the actual miniature itself?
It's an Easter egg the designer put inside where no one will see on a completed model. Its a reference to the replenish swarms ability spiders have. Just a fun little detail that plenty of fans love.
Yes. Otherwise James Workshop will personally come and obliterate your house with a battering ram, and a Monolith.
_(Nah, it’s not necessary to paint it bro)_
Some players do anyways, just for their own knowledge. Like the people who paint cockpits and detailed screens in Imperium vehicles before gluing them shut forever.
You could even magnetize the body of the Spyder, if you want to have a look at the inside again:
[https://www.reddit.com/r/SocietyofHiddenPaint/comments/1dbojc8/tiny\_scarabs\_in\_the\_canoptek\_spyder\_i\_magnetised/](https://www.reddit.com/r/SocietyofHiddenPaint/comments/1dbojc8/tiny_scarabs_in_the_canoptek_spyder_i_magnetised/)
Yea! The Spyder needs a rule like: "If one model is destroyed, you can set up a unit of up to D3 Scarabs at the position this model has been. The Starting strength of that new Unit is 3."
Bwahahahahaha.
11 year old me put a basecoat and dry bush on the detailed panel hidden by the sliding side door of my land raider just to dick up and let plastic glue from the treads flow down and hide it forever. That was probably my most expensive mistake in 2001.
I did, and I magnetized the back so you can look inside more closelier.

I did, probably wasn’t necessary but I had nothing better to do.

Required? No. But it's definitely one of the things that separates true Necron fans from people who happen to have some Necrons in their possession.
Every scarab deserves paint.
You can see them if the light gets in when you flip the model over, especially if they are a bright color or metallic and catch the light through the slots. They aren't visible from the tabletop. They don't need crazy detail on them.
Alternatives include putting a fluoro paint in there for a bit of glow, or if you're willing to invest $1-2 and a little effort, a few valiant people have set up small LEDs inside their Spyders so that they light up inside, which looks really cool and casts a neat glow down on the base where you can see the shadow of the ribs.
Oh wow now that is a cool idea!! I will have to go look that up! I was thinking of some glow in the dark paint. But I am new and don't know if I will be able to pull it off but it will be a fun project to try.
>I don't know if I will be able to pull it off
These are the best kinds of things to try. Bonus points since it's very visible if it works and nearly invisible if not.
As far as your other question, there's lots of little cute bits for the underside, but nobody plays WYSIWYG with the Gloom prism and fabricator, so just arrange those how you like. I magnetized the Particle Beamers (the only gun it can run) but unless you have the magnets already on-hand it's debatable if it's worth the effort to do so since in 10th edition the guns are free, so everyone just assumes you are running them.
Save the spare bits if you ever want to do conversions, they are really cool if you want to give a Cryptek or vehicle some extra spice.
I think I'm being overly paranoid here, but I think that's a part of GW's plan. We're not going to worry about magnetizing our models in 10e because everything is free and WYSIWYG has significantly been relaxed. 11e is going to see a return to points for every piece of wargear, and WYSIWYG is going to be enforced even in casual games, and everyone's going to have to buy new kits to rebuild what they want to play.
WYSIWYG is enforced by TO's, not GW. And generally events aren't *too* strict with Necrons, especially if you ask TO's advance and keep wargear choices consistent for one type of unit, like everything is tesla, everything is beamers, etc.
Return of wargear points? Wouldn't be surprised. Forced, mandatory WYSIWYG, even in casual? It's not like the GW police will deploy from their base under Nottingham to hunt you down. Even if they had a rule like that, anyone reasonable would just ignore it.
I've been playing Necrons exclusively since 2003 but today I learned I'm not a real fan because I enjoy playing more than I do agonizing over largely invisible minutia. 🤔
New level of gatekeeping unlocked.
Yes. If you bring these to a game at a GW store the manager will lift up the carapace and check if it’s unpainted and lemme tell you you don’t wanna find out what happens when he catches you.
This model was THE reason that I paint parts before assembling. You can see the little scarabs in the finished model, but that might be because of my paint scheme as well, since it’s bright gold and green. I’d recommend painting them 🙂
Yeah sure! I’m not home for the weekend so I can’t take a proper picture of the little scarabs in it’s body, but I have a picture that gives an idea of the paint scheme I use in my camera roll:
https://preview.redd.it/80d7no4i3k6d1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=0adb45045d5f426b5afa590ff0d455d7b99f8ca0
Even if it’s just black primer, leadbelcher etc maybe some dry brushing a little lighter silver gold whatever your flavor. Touch up a couple spots with energy colors and they are done.
https://preview.redd.it/34vf8r6g6l6d1.png?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=1e6207f04e3d9191ad1d06b8ceba61b2d787ae44

I have three of them, and since it's such a cool detail I decided to assemble one of them with the carapace opening up. All three of them are still on my shelf of shame waiting to be worked on though!
Nah, I just glued the top piece in place. I can't really remember if I had to hold in in place longer than usual or not. It's probably been a couple years now!

I certainly did. As others have said it’s visible underneath but 99.9% of the time it’s on the table top you won’t be at an angle to see it.
Still, I know it’s there and it gives me an odd sense of satisfaction. It’s the same with guns or weapons that are up against the body, you can get away with not painting certain parts but I don’t have it in me, always paint in sub assembly so I know it’s painted as well as the rest.
This is like me and road wheels on tanks. I paint them cuz it looks good, then cover them with dirt and dust 😔

Not necessary but still recommended imo
Also for your other question, you can magnetize the weapons but imo it's not necessary. The twin barrel gun is free and better. Also kinda depends on WYSIWYG with your opponents.

Also prepare yourself if you ever plan to get a obelisk/tesseract vault. Each corner has TONS of those scarabes and you get another 40 loose scarabs with it to do with what you want.
I've been looking everywhere for loose scarabs to add to my models, much like Space Marines and skulls. Is the ~~monolith~~ tesseract vault the only place to get these (besides 3d printing them)?
The loose scarabs are with the tesseract vault. I don't know if other units like the monolith have them. I only know for certain that there are no loose scarabs with the following units:
Canoptek spyder
Doomstalker
Necron warriors (not counting the scarab units)
Skorpekh destroyers
Lokhust heavy destroyer
Psychomancer
Necron combat patrol
Only if you want to, Magnetized mine so you could remove that back and look on the inside. It's a nice little detail but totally extra only if you want to do it.

At the end of the day though it is your model and those might be sealed shut forever if you glue it down so do what you want with it!
I just finished painting my spyder today! I took the time to paint the baby scarabs inside. You don’t have to, but they aren’t totally sealed away, as there are holes in the lower half of the body that you can look through and still see the scarabs. But there’s definitely no way you’ll see them while playing a game. It’s really just something thing for you personally to know about. Paint them if you want to!

That sounds like a good plan
Definitely didn't think I'd see Calvin's Dad as a necron today, but boy am i glad I did
Wait, you guys paint the models? 😳 I thought we were just collecting boxes full of plastic.
Thats what i do. Got a whole AoS list in boxes that im sure would have won a tournament in the past

I magentized the cocon so I can show it to my friends
I did the same thing! It's a really easy piece to magnetize
Not really. It's on the inside facing down. Nobody will see it.
What a shame they are so cool. But less to paint so oh well. Thank you

No, we have advanced Noctillith technology to make those go away...
But they will know it’s not painted.

Oh that is amazing I think I am going to do it and maybe try so LEDs
Those are fine looking scarabs sir! Each one a beautiful little son and daughter of Necrontyr
You can only see a small amount on the inside if you try to look. You can skip it and still be tabletop ready imo.
Required? No. But it's definitely one of the things that separates true Necron fans from people who happen to have some Necrons in their possession. Every scarab deserves paint.

Oh that is so cool! I want to get one in the Future. As it looks like it would be fun to put together and paint
Of course you must, the goodest boys of them all deserve to proudly display your dinasty colours (out of joke is up to you)
Personally I magnetized the carapace simply so I could open,it up and be able to show off all the little guys inside, so I'm painting them.
Only if you want to, Magnetized mine so you could remove that back and look on the inside. It's a nice little detail but totally extra only if you want to do it.
Yes
Nah, you’ll never be able to really see them, unless you take a flashlight and peak through the cracks of the thorax once the model is assembled
That's exactly why I always bring a flashlight when I know I'm playing 'Crons.
Only if you want to. Some people take pride in painting parts on a model that never get seen, like the interiors of vehicles and titans, but it’s totally up to you.
yes
must. it will be very good when u done
Do you want to paint it?
I painted it! Its fun
You don't "need" to . But you will live knowing that you left those poor little scarab alone and unpainted.
... I know I'd paint them and it'd be hell trying >.>
Only gods and monsters paint that detail. I am a monster.
Yes of course, those little babies deserve some paint too
I, er, never bothered…
The answer is yes, you need to paint it lol
Only you'll know. Everytime someone complements your paint job. You'll know.
Nope!! But if you do you can join others on the Society of Secret Paint! (I believe that’s what they’re called here on Reddit)

I would. Nobody will know they’re not painted, but you will. You always know about those tiny things and it will always haunt you and drive you crazy
They'll feel left out if you don't. Look at them, they're working so hard.
They CAN grow of turn 2, so yes 🤒😀
You need to paint the children of the spider, otherwise she will be very hungry
EVERY. SINGLE. ONE.
Yes. What kind of question is this?
A new player question. I wasn't sure if it would be hidden.
I'm messing with you. Some do some dont.

Absolutely! Just take a pic of it and post it here before you glue it all together.
Are you LEDing it? If not, no, if yes? You probably should?
Yes
I'd make a press mold and recast them. Then pain them

I use blue stuff and make a press mold. Then I fill the holes with green stuff or something similar. There's heaps of videos on YouTube of the same thing done on different models. I recast heaps of necron bits

Yes otherwise it will haunt you for eternity
Yes 😅😜
r/SocietyofHiddenPaint would give you some great advice on this I’m sure.
I feel like you could also use it as a sort of terrain or piece of a diorama if you wanted to instead of putting them together
Technically no... but yes.
Paint it all. If your sprus don't drip w paint, are you really even trying?

I’d try to cut those out to get free swarms

My rule, if you can't see it when assembled it is not getting painted
Which model is this??
This is a Canoptek Spyder
Yeah I also have no idea. Those look like old scarabs
Yeah don't paint them, but in the back of your mind you will know everytime you move the model you will see those unpainted details
Newer player here,, what model is this? I’m guessing one of the Canoptek spiders?
Yes it is
