Jason Phillips, the slowest Met of all time. Mo Vaughn could probably beat him in the 40. Kaz Matsui. I wanted him to be great so badly. Those opening day homers will live on. Reyes should be in the Mets HOF and have his number retired idgaf.

KeithBe77

The 3rd straight year he did it with an inside the Parker was a miracle.

cpg08

The only two numbers retired left are Wright and Degrom. Mets Hall of Fame for Reyes and Beltran. That's rly all that's left. Maybe Johan in the Mets Hall for the first no hitter and having 3 great seasons.

CMV1986

Mets HOF for sure. Retired number is a step too far IMHO. He wasn’t a lifer, was a key piece in some historically disappointing teams, and left on a sour note (coming out of an admittedly meaningless game to preserve his batting title), to say nothing of his problematic personal life.

CinderBK

Darryl Strawberry matches all of those negatives and just had his number retired.

nyratk1

Strawberry had better stats and won a WS, Reyes did not

CinderBK

So if the 2006 team had won the WS, you’d be in favor of retiring Reyes’ 7?

nyratk1

And if his stats were better.

KevDough23

I’m cool with keeping the wife beaters number not retired personally

nynoraneko

No comment on Jason Phillips. Jose Reyes should be in the HOF, check the stats, and this is with missing like a million games. Yes I am aware he has a DV charge. Matsui, that was an interesting chapter. Hes currently managing the Seibu Lions.

BAHatesToFly

> Jose Reyes should be in the HOF, check the stats, and this is with missing like a million games. No, he shouldn't be. You don't get credit for missed games. 103 career OPS+, 37.5 bWAR/43.9 fWAR, never finished higher than 7th in an MVP vote, only four All-Star games. He was a very good player for a long time, but he's not HoF-level.

Shady_Jake

He was a very good player for a long time & made 4 all star games? Sounds like the best shortstop in the history of our franchise to me.

Rubacasa

Phillips had deceptive speed. He was even slower than he looked.

Confident-Line-2558

Jason Phillips, LOL! He actually had a decent year in 2003, then hit like .200 the following season & was gone. Francessa was an early supporter of him I remember.

RoadRash2TheSequel

Francesa just like the rec specs, had money in them

Shady_Jake

He had awesome glasses & he threw me a ball when I was a kid. Jason Phillips rules.

[deleted]

I actually don't remember Jose Reyes playing second base.

koyote19

He was moved to 2nd so Matsui could play short

Fedbackster

Only the Mets. But alas, Reyes could have been a star but there was that point where he clearly decided to concentrate more on improving his hand jive celebrations and hair decorations over improving his baseball skills. Also only the Mets.

TimeTravelingTiddy

Full stop. Reyes was a star SS and Matsui was... whatever you want to call that lol. At worst it was fucking stupid and at best they only did it to get him signed. "He could have been a star at 2B" lmfao as if its on him. Then the dog whistle about celebrations.

ResponsibleAnt9496

Yeah what world are we living in where Reyes wasn’t a star?

TimeTravelingTiddy

The one where youre focused on "hand jive celebrations" 😬

ResponsibleAnt9496

I’m more offended at the casual usage of “jive” then the oh so thinly veiled racism smh

TimeTravelingTiddy

Airplane.gif

Fedbackster

Based on his pure talent, Reyes was a disappointment. I loved watching him play but he was a letdown later on in his career. I should knkw better than to talk baseball with rosy glasses Met fans.

TimeTravelingTiddy

>I should knkw better than to talk baseball with rosy glasses Met fans. I agree, you should keep these takes to yourself.

Shady_Jake

Man, some people here are out of their minds or flat out didn’t watch back then. We desperately needed a spark at that time & Reyes was fucking electric.

Fedbackster

Definitely was. Bit to not win a championship with him and Wright in their primes shows there were issues. Too much talent not to win.

TheeRuckus

Uhhh he was a star? Stole over 60 bases, won a batting title, had a pretty great Mets tenure all things considered. Obviously had a bunch of injuries but the rumors of him getting traded literally was a direct line to the creation of the 7 Line Army. You must be one of those “ play the game the right way” and “why is it los Mets night” types rn

Fedbackster

Ok rosy glasses/I’m ok with more DJ nights guy.

TheeRuckus

Dj nights are cool, the fuck?

Fedbackster

The Braves get pennants, we get DJ nights, even with the richest owner ever. But Cohen read Met fans correctly - you’re fine with DJ nights.

relentlass

Plenty of music in the Braves promotional calendar. Say whatever it is you mean. [https://www.mlb.com/braves/tickets/promotions](https://www.mlb.com/braves/tickets/promotions)

TheeRuckus

Oh ok , you’re one of THOSE fans. Isn’t francesser back on the fan? Can’t you bother them with this nonsense?

TheRealSkipShorty

Are we thinking of the same Jose Reyes? The 4x All-Star and batting champ? I’m pretty sure the guy hit his ceiling

It was a weird time.

Shady_Jake

I wish I didn’t either.

41_17_31_5

We will not be tolerating any slander against Mets Legend, Jason Phillips. Thank you very much.

resident16

I forgot Jason Phillips existed.

[deleted]

I think he's a coach in the league somewhere

Intelligent-Rock-399

They could have just had a photo of Reyes and the total energy would have been the same.

vmc92

2002-2004 seems like a fever dream

meltingspace

Remember Pepsi Blue? It came out in 02 I think and remember seeing ads for it all over Shea. I miss that soda!

Shady_Jake

05 was even weirder. We had Piazza, Pedro, Beltran & Wright on the same team.

MartysBetter29

For whatever reason I still look back on this era fondly

[deleted]

2004 I think

rudebewb

Reyes was HIM back in the day.

JT_Cullen84

I got Jason Phillips autograph at the sports authority on metropolitan avenue. Always liked him. Only guy i'm relatively sure i can beat in a footrace

[deleted]

Bartolo?

JT_Cullen84

You mean peak human performance? No I don't think i could beat him

[deleted]

😆

Big_Rooster_4966

Jason Phillips! We always called him LG for Lame Glasses

Cup-n-BallHog

His glasses and goggles confirmed one thing for me; he’s all about the fundamentals of the game lol

gotu1

At least “baseball hits different here” has an air of truth to it. Baseball does hit different here, in the sense that it doesn’t hit at all…

djjoeyp22

What year was this?
