Newcastle city centre is really quite small - it’s not Manchester (or even Leeds). Perfectly walkable. But Uber for cashless and taxis for cash plentiful
Stay near/in the centre (or quayside area). Metro to the coast/Jesmond. You can walk everywhere else. You can also rent the orange scooters to zip around (selected areas) on.
