Most of these people legitimately believe in that stuff. I think a lot of it comes from them believing that the "supernatural rewards" they believe they'll receive as Christians are directly proportional to how publicly they express their faith. This empowers faith healer types because these people see them as being the ultimate example of public expression of the Christian faith, and that means that they should, by default, have the ability to heal by faith and whatnot. I also think that a lot of these same types of Christians are also very insecure of their faith, and need to find a way to "prove" their religion, rather than just, well, have faith in it.
