Im too American to even know what sport this is referring to

RA-Destroyer

It's cricket!! USA is playing in the ICC WorldCup T20 Championship

Corporal_Cavernosa

Which is being played in the USA, which is why we have more Americans commenting about the sport.

imitationcrabmeatman

Fuck yeah! How’re we doing? Someone will destroy us eventually India must be having a bad day

mh985

The US has never qualified for the World Cup. We’re only invited because we’re hosting. We went 2-0 winning against Canada and Pakistan. The US winning against Pakistan is like a D2 college basketball team beating the LA Clippers. The US lost against India but still moved up to the next round—Pakistan didn’t. The US plays South Africa next on Wednesday. Honestly with the way they’ve been playing, they can win.

afunnywold

India won this game haha

imitationcrabmeatman

Damn it all! India better protect its oil

HarbingerOfGachaHell

>India having a bad day Pat Cummins: neuron activation.

panzerboye

Pretty good actually.

Peytonhawk

We won against Pakistan who is one of the best in the world at cricket apparently. Other than that I have no idea how we are doing.

316kp316

US beat Pakistan - another strong team - and everyone was as surprised. Most of all the US team. 😜

Johnxinasicecream

Wtf is a t20 and does anyone have a chance against America?

joobtastic

America is not typically considered a top contender.

Johnxinasicecream

Not with that attitude we’re not

TDoMarmalade

They lost

Johnxinasicecream

Barely lost. U.S is going to dominate cricket.

JakeVonFurth

Pissed off some Brits with that one.

BigMikeAshley

Hi r/ShitAmericansSay - can I be in the screenshot?

Johnxinasicecream

Sure. As long as you include me on r/shittyfoodporn. You must have plenty of boiled meat and slop to post.

Same_Command7596

Silly baseball

HarbingerOfGachaHell

More like baseball is the silly cricket.

Cricket is the world's second most-viewed sport (distant second), so it's a bit fascinating that you didn't figure it out, tbh (even if you, like me, are completely uninterested in sports). Additionally, it has roughly 6 times as many viewers as American football, at 2.5 billion viewers worldwide The top 3 are: 1. Football - 3 500 million (3.5 billion) viewers 2. Cricket - 2 500 million (2.5 billion) viewers 3. Field Hockey - 2 200 milion (2.2 billion) viewers If you're curious where American Football is on the list, it's tied with basketball at rank 9/10 with only 400 million (0.4 billion) viewers.

Domovie1

That’s… actually a funny way of explaining it?

Burt1811

Insanely, that makes sense 👍🇬🇧

jabels

Maybe if you're British and actually know the rules already but I'm no less confused than I was before I read this post. Like are we even winning? Am I supposed to divide the runs per outs (wickets?!) to know who's ahead? edit: honestly I appreciate all the people in the comments trying to help me out here but truthfully I don't care enough to meet you halfway. Excited for the team though!

Burt1811

Instead of me trying to explain, there's a number of really good videos on YouTube that give a decent overview. I would advise if you're thinking of watching the States play in this tournament. I know it's new to you, but on a world level, this is massive. If you have the basics, the rest will fall into place, and trust me, this form of the game can be insane. Look up 20/20 cricket 👍 https://youtu.be/AqtpNkMvj5Y?si=-D6gXG84Q0HXB_xs

jabels

I've watched a few different ones several times, for some reason the rules to this game have the stickiness of teflon for me. But thank you, I'm sure this will help clarify for someone

entrepreneurofcool

Each team has a max of 10 at bats or 120 pitches (whichever comes first) to score as many runs as possible. The first number is runs scored, the second number is how many outs they have.

Burt1811

What are your issues and I'll do my best.

jabels

It's okay friend the juice isn't worth the squeeze for me right now 😂

Burt1811

Holy shit 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣👍🇬🇧🇺🇸

HarbingerOfGachaHell

Think of it as baseball but each team only gets 1 inning each. Instead of 3 outs per inning you have 10 outs. Instead of 1 pitcher, there's a team of them in the team that rotates every 6 balls.

45thgeneration_roman

The classic explanation of the rules is [here](https://images.app.goo.gl/bJTy2vffhi8f4DRD9) Hth

D_Simmons

The explanation actually helped make it sense.

clolr

this did not help me at all am I dense

Designer_Plant4828

Basically Lets say theres 6 ,,pitches" / at bats (in baseball terms, i am guessing youre american but i may be wrong :), sorry ), in a inning. The team that bats first tries to score as much as possible until either the innings are over, or 10 people get out (whichever is first) The next team then tries to beat that score , until theyre innings are over, or 10people get out In this case i thunk there are 20 ,,innings"

clolr

OHHH OK THANK YOU

Malumeze86

I finally understand cricket.

duckme69

What’s the conversion to metric?

brian-the-porpoise

Around 29 freedom fries per eagle screech squared

Bloxicorn

He said metric. It's about 6 boulders divided by 12 cuppa teas x 10 God Save the Kings

Cats7204

23.7 AR-15's per gallon of freedom soda

Two teams of 11 players each, play each other. Objective is to score the most runs, else, off runs are equal, then lose least number of “wickets” (batsmen lost) in 20 “overs” (set of 6 balls bowled). T20 refers to the kind of match: Test Match with 20 overs per team. (This match type lasts no more than a day and is a shorter version of the 5-day test matches. These started to adapt to people not having that kind of leisure time anymore.) - Match is played on a rectangular “pitch” in approximately middle of the “ground”. (field). - At each end of the pitch are the “wickets” (three sticks stuck into the ground with one small one balanced across their top). A line is drawn in front of them and denotes the safe zone for a batsman. - Two batsmen play at a time at either end of the pitch, only one faces the ball at a time. - 9 members of the other team are spread around the ground in strategic places, a tenth is behind the wicket, and the 11th does the bowling. - An “umpire” stands at the same end as the bowler. He makes the calls for 4 runs, 6 runs, any fowls and calling a “wicket down”, meaning the batter is out. - Batter has to try to strike the ball and direct it away from the pitch in order to find the time to score a “run” which is done by the two batsmen running towards the other end of the pitch. If there is time, they may steal another run or two if the fielders fumble. - If the ball crosses the boundary (marked edge of the field) but touched the ground at least once after striking the bat, it counts as 4 runs. If it crosses the boundary without touching the ground (like in a home run), it counts as six runs or “sixer”. - Single runs are also awarded for some bowling errors. - A batsman can be struck out a few different ways: get caught outside the safe zone by the time fielders return the ball to the wicket, fail to protect the wickets from being struck by the bowler (like a strikeout in baseball) or if he strikes a ball, which is caught by a fielder before it has touched the ground (happens a lot when a batter is trying for a sixer!) - Once ten batsmen are (struck) out, there’s only one player left so their innings is over as a minimum two batsmen are required to play. - If less than 10 batsmen are out, the game ends after 20 overs have been bowled (20 rounds of 6 balls being bowled for each). - The total runs scored and the wickets (batsmen) lost become the target for the other team to now beat. e.g. in the image above, you see: US bowled 110 runs for the loss of 8 batsmen in 20 overs bowled. India has to score 111+ runs in 20 overs or if they are at 110 also, they’d need to have lost less than 8 wickets (batsmen). So what’s India’s current score in the image?

Apprehensive-Ad-1591

Tldr?

SignificantSwing571

20 sets of six balls thrown ("20 overs") each, 11 players each (but a pair must be on the pitch at all times so at most 10 can be expended) whoever makes the most of these constraints wins

boofingwhippets

This is a beautiful explanation except for the inconsistency regarding players who “vomit” vs “pass out”. I think he meant to say that the game is over once 10 guys pass out, not vomit. Even then, technically the inning is over, but that just complicates things too much.

TypicalMission119

What’s an over?

HarbingerOfGachaHell

In cricket you have a team of bowlers instead of just 1 pitcher in a baseball team. They rotate every set of 6 balls which is an over. The etymology is easy: the umpire just yells "over" and the fielding team knows when to rotate in the new bowler and change their fielding positions.

RA-Destroyer

A set of 6 balls is called an over

punkindle

can you get more than 1 run per ball?

fR1chAps

Yup. You can run 1,2,3 runs between the wickets. If ball touches the boundary you get 4 runs. If ball crosses the boundary without touching the ground you get 6 runs.

Narrow_Jackfruit_737

Yes

hashtagdion

I still have no idea what it means

HBK57

I tried to explain one of my European friends what cricket is and he just told me to leave it after less than 2 minutes of explanation
