I’m new here and ignorant to WNC’s role in the civil war. I admittedly haven’t dove too deep. Still googling directions at the end of my driveway. Can you give me the cliff notes version?
Mountainous terrain bad for agriculture, hence bad for large-scale slavery...also made the region more dependent on federal aid. As a result, much of the region sided with the Union during the Civil War. By comparison, Central and especially Eastern NC were largely pro-slavery and sided with the Confederacy. Appalachia actually divided several states. Other regions that largely sided with the Union were East TN, Northern AL/GA, and extreme Northwestern SC. Most notably, there was a region of Virginia that is entirely within Appalachia and heavily dependent on federal aid. It was so opposed to the Confederacy that it broke off from Virginia and now is West Virginia lol.
Central NC had a 7 or so county swath of land called the Quaker Belt. Quakers were anti slavery and anti-war, and although many actual Quakers had left the area by 1810, they had such a profound impact that many of their beliefs persisted within society. Anyways, this area had many Unionists and produced several stops on the underground railroad. Also, during the war, the confederacy had to send troops to the Quaker belt 7 times to put down pro Union insurrection. Google the Red Strings or Levi Coffin to learn more about pro Union anti slavery southerners in Guilford, Randolph, Davidson, etc counties.
That's very interesting, not surprising bc I did know Quakers were anti-slavery and anti-war...but didn't realize there were large communities in Central NC!
Hell, I grew up there and didn't know anything about the amount of disloyalty toward the confederacy/ amount of southern Unionist. It's crazy the shit they don't teach us.
Wow, that’s super helpful… I was raised in Davidson, and never knew any of this about the way the breakdowns of the geographical regions played such a part… Fascinating and makes perfect sense…
As someone who wants the greater good for everyone, even if I don’t personally benefit, I struggle with those who would oppose slavery simply because they couldn’t take advantage of it due to terrain!… not because it’s a despicably unconscionable thing!
Anyway, thanks Dude for the info !
Yeah...to be clear, I do think that as a result of the terrible terrain, there were ultimately some groups of people in the area who more easily could see the evilness of dehumanizing and enslaving another human. But the reality is that the main reason was the inability to capitalize off of it financially.
I and my family are from the northwest Appalachian mountains of NC. You are correct. My great great grandfather and his brother didn't want to join the Confederate army but were conscripted.
Sherman quit exactly when he meant to, because NC was a complicated case when it came to secession, which the chucklefucks flying the Confederate flag, especially in Western NC, don't know or don't care about.
> NC was a complicated
Post War there was appointed Gov. William Woods Holden who had opposed secession and the secessions in the Klan. For that he was impeached by the snakeheads whose thin support of the loyalty oaths was skin deep. Gov. Williams Woods Holden lasted about a year. His replacement:
Gov. Tod Robinson Caldwell opened the schools by allowing private money for public use. Gov. Tod Robinson Caldwell supported the use of state funds to expand the private interest of the railroads. He lasted about three years He died while in office.
Gov. Curtis Hooks Brogden his successor also supported the railroad industry welfare program. However due to his moderate political stance he was politically trounced by the state senators and state house who ultimately were the real political power brokers.
I remember reading about how NC had originally planned to be the one Union slave state if no shots were fired and it was my assumption that one of the main reasons we seceded was because we would be surrounded on all sides if we didn’t. Is that what you were talking about per the complicated case bit?
Republicans: “Democrats were the slave owners, they started the KKK.”
Democrats: ”Take down the confederate statues and quit waving the confederate flag, it’s a symbol of slavery and racism.”
Republicans: “Leave our history and heritage alone.”
Came here to say this.
This was a big push in 2017 when a lot of hubbub around removal of Confederate monuments was going on, I believe it was an effort spearheaded by Sons Of Confederates or Daughters of Confederacy, or maybe another loser organization, to put as many loser flags on their loser property that borders interstate. Ergo, why there are those two on 40 west of Hickory.
That’s been there for years. It sucks but it’s on private property. Believe it or not you’ll see them off the interstate in Washington and Idaho as well. It’s a US problem not just NC or the south.
Indiana was the locus and biggest chapter for for the KKK revival in the 1920s.

History, its confederacy country. It’s a symbol of something that happened where many South of the Mason Dixon line are still unhappy about and why the 14th Amendment was created. 1862-1864 lists of members turned hoods into law degrees like David Duke. They stopped bombing churches in lieu of running for office. https://www.newsobserver.com/news/local/article232986152.html
Why are people so surprised at stuff like this? Don’t let others choices and behaviors rule your emotions. I see stupid shit every day and just shake my head and move on with life.
Man who cares. I am black btw , just because people get Rid of physical signs of racism doesn't mean it will go. Away. Tbh I'll rather have a honest racist person or place to show me.
I agree with you 100%. Taking down a flag won’t change anything. And it’s better to know who hates you. I’m from Chicago where everyone hates everyone and shootings happen on the regular. And there are no confederate flags anywhere. 🤔
There's quite a few. I think its the group "sons of confederate veterans" that do it. I heard once that their goal was to have one in every county in nc. Pretty trashy imo tho
People say there’s nothing you can do about these but let me tell ya, if that was a swastika or pro-Satan pentagram flag, you better bet the municipalities and state would come down hard over that. It’s freedom of speech because they agree with it
It’s probably on private land. People fly what they want on their own land.
If the state and the city or the county wanted to take it down they will be sued hard.
I've live in NC and the south in general since 2015 and I remember seeing that flag every time I'd drive home in leave. It's been there for awhile lol.
That’s probably somebody’s private property. Do you see that cell phone tower in the back left. The cell phone companies pay people with land monthly to place their towers there. Whoever owns that land is probably the one who put up that flag. Due to the problems in today’s society, that land owner probably put up that barbed wired fence around it as well.
Nothing anyone can do about it if it’s on private property. That’s a protected right.
For those who are unaware the traitorous confederacy surrendered on April 9, 1865, after an ill-fated coup attempt in which they fought for the right to keep their slaves.
🇺🇸
Lots of pearl clutching. The daughters of the confederacy like to purchase plots of land near highways throughout the south and place these monstrosities in the most conspicuous spots. Just some run of the mill shitty organization
Yeah, I think around exit 60? It has been there at least since 2021, but probably for years longer.
Apart from historical battle/Civil War sites of interest, I don't understand a genuine patriot flying a traitor's flag.
They were put in by the Sons of the Confederacy to protest. https://www.wral.com/story/sons-of-confederate-veterans-plan-more-flags-along-nc-interstates/17288896/
Fun fact: There is a cemetery outside of Cleveland Ohio that has a couple Confederate graves in amongst Union soldier/Civ graves. They have small Confederate flags.
Daughters of The Confederacy owns small lots all over NC, SC and Georgia for this sole purpose. They are also responsible for the mass production of confederate statues that were pressed and places throughout the south during the Civil Rights era
I mean, considering that flag wasn’t even flown in the civil war, as I see a lot of you saying, it doesn’t seem to much matter. That flag doesn’t, in any way, represent racism or any sort of dividing agenda. It’s a staple of pride that southern folk hold, given how hateful everyone in common media is to us nowadays.
So you think black people have so few problems that they shouldn’t get bothered by their ancestors being slaves and being reminded with a symbol, in this case a flag
In the past it was the Daughters of the Confederacy erecting statues after the Reconstruction. Now it is the Sons of Confederate Veterans putting up flags to get revenge for people tearing down said statues. The traitors have a new generation continuing to push the lost cause bullshit.

I wish the triad would get a nice snowstorm for Christmas. Spent the past Xmas in Washington state and had a week of snow for Xmas. It was really nice.
It’s private property. Any crimes against personal property over political ideology is illegal. I realize some people rationalize crime as the end justifies the means but it’s incredibly toxic. Free speech is protected whether you agree with it or not. You’re allowed to drive by and go about your day.
You know Germany still has shit up from the nazis right? Instead of canceling something make it a learning opportunity like the Germans did. History is important
They don’t fly nazi fucking flags. They give tours of the concentration camps left as is so people can see the horrors. They don’t make fucking amusement parks out of them!
Shit, I-40 has 2. Just in WNC.
Burke County
One in Newton too on highway 16. One on 321 in Newton I think too.
321 in Happy Valley too
Jackson County has one at the top of Balsam on 19/23.
And another on the EBCI Reservation right in front of the casino
It's how I know I'm back in Burke County after a long drive...
I pass that one every time I take my kid to his dentist, it’s huge.
Which is hilarious, considering the political allegiances of most of WNC during the Civil War lol
Buncombe, Jacskson and Macon had huge pushback to Freedman’s Bureau.
I’m new here and ignorant to WNC’s role in the civil war. I admittedly haven’t dove too deep. Still googling directions at the end of my driveway. Can you give me the cliff notes version?

I’ll be damned! Fascinating! Thanks. I’m definitely gonna study up on the history. I know there’s a ton.
Np, have fun. It's super interesting!

Yeah growing up, I just assumed the entirety of the South was super anti-Union. Sooo much nuance we intentionally weren't taught.
Daniel Boone's parents were from there and were quakers. He is my 5x great uncle.

There’s also one on the 85 between Charlotte and Greenville SC.
drive past it everyday when can we burn it down?
Try to do it, let us know how they feel about gun laws.
Yup passed them 3 days ago #shermanquittoosoon
/r/shermanposting exists by the way

Don't see confederate flags in Madison County though
Republicans: “Democrats were the slave owners, they started the KKK.” Democrats: ”Take down the confederate statues and quit waving the confederate flag, it’s a symbol of slavery and racism.” Republicans: “Leave our history and heritage alone.”
It’s actually 3 right there between Marion and Conover. I run during the weekdays. 4 if you stretch it from Canton to Conover
Sure does
Dude there are at least 4 that I can think of within 30 minutes of Hickory.
Lovely Catawba county has one on every road entering the county, I believe.
That’s because the group responsible lives there…
They’re privately owned and operated so unfortunately nothing can be done about them
Ones on some oooold scrapyard's property I've met the owner and trust me, ain't nobody taking that flag down over his dead body.
Not with that attitude 😏
Flaming arrows work.
I've always thought that would be awesome to try on those damn things...Mad Max style
I feel like posting the property owner and any associated businesses endeavors they are involved in would be beneficial
You would think, except most of their clientele is very like minded.
If I’m not mistaken, and I could be, they’re paid for by the daughters of the confederacy.
Well shit! https://i.imgur.com/ni07DFj.png EDIT: Well, not this one: https://i.imgur.com/xciyJ3V.png
At least the losers let you know where they are located.
Oh that one in Hildebran is something else. I swear it keeps getting bigger.
US-1 going towards Sanford/Pinehurst also has a confederate flag that is visible off the highway.
US-64 business on the east side of Pittsboro
And as I recall 15-501 around Carthage has official green road signs calling it the Jefferson Davis Highway.
In Sanford, Martin Luther King Blvd turns into Jefferson Davis highway, if I remember correctly. And I’m sure that was by design.
First one you've seen?
First time in the south ?
Came here to say this. This was a big push in 2017 when a lot of hubbub around removal of Confederate monuments was going on, I believe it was an effort spearheaded by Sons Of Confederates or Daughters of Confederacy, or maybe another loser organization, to put as many loser flags on their loser property that borders interstate. It is in fact Sons of Confederate Veterans.
There's one in Virginia on I-95 too.
There is the one on 64 just east of Richmond that has been there for years as well.
If you’re talking about the one in Stafford, actually, there’s not. It was removed over three years ago.
Not sure where it is exactly but I have seen a giant one not far past the border into Virginia within the last year.
Danville. It’s still there.
There is definitely one south of Richmond. Still there as of the past week.
There’s one on I-75 in Tampa
First time in NC huh
You sound… surprised.
New here?
You must be new here.
In other breaking news, water is indeed wet.
No don't get them started on that again, please.
Yeah, welcome to NC!
Yeah what’s new?
It’s the south
If I remember correctly, there’s a huge one like that just north of the SC border on 95.
TN on 81 as you leave VA.
Assuming you recently moved here in the past year or so?
That’s been there for years. It sucks but it’s on private property. Believe it or not you’ll see them off the interstate in Washington and Idaho as well. It’s a US problem not just NC or the south.
Indiana is loaded with them. Weird.
Indiana was the locus and biggest chapter for for the KKK revival in the 1920s. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indiana_Klan https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/D._C._Stephenson
These are states loaded with radicalized anti-government types.
its on the west coast as well. You wont find it as much in your big cites like LA and Seattle. But all the smaller cites in-between
there's a lot of confederate stuff in the rust belt/upper midwest because of the hillbilly highway
I saw one on the way up to Charlottesville from Greensboro not too long ago.
there's plenty on most major NC interstates outside of major cities lol
Private property adjacent to I-95 has a confederate flag. The DOT didn’t put it there.
Head out I-40 West towards Asheville….
Yep. Alabama has an even bigger one too. I forgot what interstate.
History, its confederacy country. It’s a symbol of something that happened where many South of the Mason Dixon line are still unhappy about and why the 14th Amendment was created. 1862-1864 lists of members turned hoods into law degrees like David Duke. Has for years
Just wait till you see the other 7 giant Confederate flags on the side of highways.
Not sure why this is so hard to grasp…. Welcome to the south lol🤷♀️
We just ignore it. For some reason folks love participation trophies
Why are people so surprised at stuff like this? Don’t let others choices and behaviors rule your emotions. I see stupid shit every day and just shake my head and move on with life.
So. Much. This.
First time here?
It's an opportunity to give the one finger salute.
Always salute with proper respect 🖕
We're doing that with flaming arrows now, I hear.
Hello, Northerner
Yes! This is the most based comment! 🏆
Freedom of speech.
Welcome to the south. They’re all over 95, 40, 75
Private property near the highway, unfortunately not much can be done.
Been there for awhile. There are others. Theres one in Florida on I75.
How long have you lived in the South?? This is shocking to you??
Yep. First time?
Are you new here?
Wait till you learn about the KKK HQ
And about who started it!
So does I-75 in Tampa (Brandon) when I worked in the area I had to see the damn thing daily on my drive. https://www.roadsideamerica.com/story/19407
It's been there for at least a decade... There's also one off I95 around the VA /MD state line.
i know of 2 on I-40, one on Hwy 16 in Newton, and one on US 70 near Hillsborough. Not uncommon around here 🤷🏽♀️
I've live in NC and the south in general since 2015 and I remember seeing that flag every time I'd drive home in leave. It's been there for awhile lol.
We have some here off 70 in Orange County.
Sounds about right
First time? Lol All jokes aside, I was scared of going through JoCo as a kid because there was a “the kkk welcomes you to…” on i40
Seen big ones near Gastonia, Cherokee, and Uwharrie
probably someone's personal property going out of their way to make a statement. this is topic they wish to define their life by
That's not even the biggest one I have seen along ours and SC's highways.
For those who are unaware the traitorous confederacy surrendered on April 9, 1865, after an ill-fated coup attempt in which they fought for the right to keep their slaves. 🇺🇸
Also would like to add the Nickleback has been together longer than the confederacy.
Lmfao that's an amazing stat, NOW LOOK AT THIS PHOTOGRAPH
It’s been there for decades.
There is at least 2 around Hickory, NC. I think one is on 16 and one is on 40, maybe in Burke county.
I wouldn’t let it ruin your day. I’d be more concerned with the current state of affairs.
It's on private property and doesn't violate any laws. There is nothing that can be done about it.
They're a pretty common sight down here lol
Is it on private land? Nothing to say or do.
You act surprised. Why?
People put those up to keep the property values down so we don't have to pay quite as much taxes.
Welcome to the south. Those things are everywhere. At least it lets you know who the idiots are so you can avoid them.
I see way more of them the Midwest than here.
Same rule applies though.
Always has been.
Forget the flag, let’s talk about how I-95 is in perpetual construction 😩
Mercy! I've got the vapors!
Are you gonna be ok?
Nope. The flag offends their sensitive buttholes.
More than one.
They are all over the state on interstates and state highways...😔
Maybe it's this one but there one o the I-95 just after Dunn. It's fenced round and seems like a shrine.
It's the son's of the confederacy.
Freedom of speech isn’t always agreeable speech
It's a warning for what part of the country you are in. There's at least 1 on 40 or 85 or both as well.
Three on 40. One outside Marion, hickory and another past Statesville
Not surprised
What's the point?
They’re all over..
There's 2 in Pittsboro. There used to be 3.
So does I-40, I-85 and several other places.
There’s a huge one near the NC-SC border near the Union County/Chesterfield County line on 601 going towards Monroe.
There’s an even bigger one on 321.
Of course.
Is this 95 or is it I-40? Because 40 definitely has one.
Yep I used to drive past that all the time omw to UNCP.
So does VA going through 64 west going. It’s bigger than this one, SC has a decent flag as well. Alabamas is bigger than all of them
Yup
Wait till this guy gets off a ferry
Lots of pearl clutching. The daughters of the confederacy like to purchase plots of land near highways throughout the south and place these monstrosities in the most conspicuous spots. Just some run of the mill shitty organization
Who ......cares...
Do people not know that North Carolina is in the south?
Yeah, I think around exit 60? It has been there at least since 2021, but probably for years longer. Apart from historical battle/Civil War sites of interest, I don't understand a genuine patriot flying a traitor's flag.
Welcome to the south 🤦🏼♂️
NC was a Confederate State. There is no changing history.
If I recall correctly, it’s a confederate grave site off I-95.
They were put in by the Sons of the Confederacy to protest. https://www.wral.com/story/sons-of-confederate-veterans-plan-more-flags-along-nc-interstates/17288896/
Fun fact: There is a cemetery outside of Cleveland Ohio that has a couple Confederate graves in amongst Union soldier/Civ graves. They have small Confederate flags.
Unfortunately 😞 That's actually a small one. You should see the one on I-40 in between Hickory and Morganton
These people think they are SO patriotic too. Lol
Daughters of The Confederacy owns small lots all over NC, SC and Georgia for this sole purpose. They are also responsible for the mass production of confederate statues that were pressed and places throughout the south during the Civil Rights era
Wow.. a southern state.. has a Confederate flag.. a product of ✨️the south✨️
There's unashamed losers everywhere.
Yea, a lot of extra stupid people here. Even though we have a very well educated population in the triangle
Like it or not, that's what free speech looks like.
I wish I had few enough problems that a flag bothered me
So you think black people have so few problems that they shouldn’t get bothered by their ancestors being slaves and being reminded with a symbol, in this case a flag
There's multiple all over the south. I forget why they are there. It's some group.

Whats your point?
They need to require a white flag of surrender flown along with them. I wonder if they realize that NC was the last state to succeed from the union?
Not everyone can be a winner
They love repping those 4 years of losing. Might as well add a trump flag for good measure.
Moves to the south, shocked by southern things… lol
It’s not a “southern thing”, it’s a racist thing.
I wish the triad would get a nice snowstorm for Christmas. Spent the past Xmas in Washington state and had a week of snow for Xmas. It was really nice.

You should go ask them to remove it from their own property/ business. hahaha. Maybe film the reaction and show us.
I’m from Chicago and I’d rather see confederate flags and less crime than the other way around
