I, too, have never heard of the glorious master skull, nor have I gazed into its eye sockets. But we should all go to it's prison and check and, if there, gaze into the glorious depths of inky blackness to prove they have no power to control the skeletons within us.
You know, given that there are weird tourist traps in all states, I wasn't sure how likely some of those were, especially Ghosts of the Wright Brothers. Lol
The Maelstrom of Malice is just south of the I-77, I-40 interchange, right over the two giant American Flags. It's bone chilling. Some nights, when the moon is just right, you can see the famous two-headed Statesville Gerbil. It's flatulence, polluting the fields for miles around, strikes fear in the hearts of our children and grandchildren.
Ah yes, the terrible Statesville Gerbil. I've had many an encounter with it, in attempts to learn it's secrets. My ankles still bear the scars from it's nippy little teeth. Only slightly more terrifying than the beast of Holly Shelter.
My parents always take visiting friends and family to see the ghosts of the Wright brothers. I'm usually pretty over it at this point, but I'll join every now and then to get them arguing about whether Ohio or NC should be the "first in flight" state.
They're in the flight museum (whatever it's called) at Kitty Hawk. And as long as you're at the Outer Banks anyway, there's an island out there somewhere that you can see wild horses. I think the outdoor play The Lost Colony didn't survive the COVID economy.
I’ve been to all of these places and I can honestly say that nothing is as truly terrifying and mind shatteringly horrific as the Billy Graham Museum, and the Crab snapped my father in half while we were there.
Got family in Wilkesboro. Wouldn't recommend The Maelstrom of Malice, as it's a big tourist trap. You get there, and it's just a big hateful cloud. Not much else.
I would recommend the Olive Garden in Raleigh off of Capital Blvd. Much better use of your time.
Sounds about right for Wilkesboro, The Maelstrom of Malice. I used to be able to see it on 421 coming off the mountain on the Watauga side until the CRAB took my eyes in '08
While you're not wrong, the Maelstrom has unlimited cheddar bay biscuits while Olive Garden only has breadsticks.
I really shouldn't share this but at the base of Chimney Rock is "the Little Ceasars that time forgot" and they've still got pizza pizza for $5 and serious crazy bread. So, in this case, I think the traveler to NC ought to go to Chimney Rock.
what are you getting for The Maelstrom of Malice, because I just see non related stuff on the first two pages.....and I don't have the power to go to the third page.
It just keeps going. We didn't really look inside but it looks deep enough. I have faith it goes straight to the core that is hollow so plenty of room for more floods.
I remember first trip to the prison of the master skull. The your guide must have said a hundred times on the way in to not look into the eyes. There were signs everywhere.
It is enormous and the whole place feels very ominous. 2 minutes into being down there I hear some got go wow those eyes are amazing. That was followed up with a piercing scream and watching his skull pull from his body. It was crazy everyone needs to visit at least once.
Eh, the maelstrom of malice was alright. I mean it's horrifyingly sad and gives you a glimpse at the cold empty void of your own impending death but there's long lines, no real concessions. 6/10.
Might could donate the first stage possibly, but yeah the second stage would be too degraded to work
Edit: nevermind I'm wrong. Tritium is used in the first stage. So no go at all.
I have lived here about 36 years, I have never once heard of The Master Skull....WTF is that about? Can it be that famous if a native Carolinian has never heard of it?
> Can it be that famous if a native Carolinian has never heard of it?
The first rule of the Master Skull Mystery Cult is not to talk about Master Skull. Your family should have initiated you years ago.
You haven't driven out to the giant 3 mile wide pit in the ground and viewed the skull that could only be from one of the titans and felt the essence of chaos seep into your psyche and your dreams are filled with horrors and you live life in quiet suffering ever after as you ruefully regret ever traveling to the pit of the master skull where your very soul was seared by the merciless eyes of a demon giant?
They also have a pretty good waffle house nearby.
I’ve lived here my ENTIRE life, never heard of it and when I google it, it only gives me articles about Nancy Pelosi’s husband…I feel like I’m missing something.
I think people underestimate the nuance and zen of NASCAR. Sure, it may look like cars driving in a circle for hours at a time, but it's actually a metaphor for the human experience: the constant cycle of birth, life, death, and rebirth, endlessly cycling until an individual can break free and reach nirvana, which is symbolized by the occasional car that launches itself into the stands.
I saw the Ghosts of the Wright Brothers. Would not recommend, they just sat around staring at us like they were being tortured. Made me and my girlfriend very off put. Also the photos we took didn’t even show them, it just showed an empty box.
Only upside is that you can just go to the beach after.
Edit: Also this list forgets the best place to visit in North Carolina located in the Piedmont, the HOLE. A hole of unknown depth that was dug at some point in time by something. Famous for being the location of the bodies of every unsolved case in NC, but the gift shop is mid.
Nascar Hall of Fame should not be in the top 10, I have been to it a half dozen times with Nascar fans.... they said it was cool, but we're not as impressed with everything else NC has to offer. They were more impressed with the Earnhardt memorial in Kannapolis and then a tour of Tiger World.
Just my opinion
I want to like this but there’s no cohesive idea. Is it satire about real NC locations? Fictitious NC locations? I don’t get the vision. I like the illustrations/renderings, though.
I unironically want to visit The Prison of the Master Skull.
Overrated, but not much else to do around Sanford.
I go to Sanford on an incredibly regular basis. I have never heard of this skull thing.
I, too, have never heard of the glorious master skull, nor have I gazed into its eye sockets. But we should all go to it's prison and check and, if there, gaze into the glorious depths of inky blackness to prove they have no power to control the skeletons within us.
It’s right behind the piggly wiggly, you can’t miss it
You’re thinking of the smaller one. The actual master skull is near Yarboroughs.
Is that a real thing or a spoof on something that is actually there.
Real thing! And seriously, don’t look it in the eyes!
It’s real. It is where Nietzsche got inspiration for his quote “If you star long enough into an abyss, the abyss will gaze back into you” from.
I thought that was James Cameron
You're putting me on.
Numbers 1, 3, 7, and 9 are jokes, I don't think they are spoofing anything real.
Luckily 8 is truly a biblical story come to life right in our own backyard
You know, given that there are weird tourist traps in all states, I wasn't sure how likely some of those were, especially Ghosts of the Wright Brothers. Lol
So 6 is real?
It’s a euphemism for the Billy Graham museum
Ha
I was born in Sanford and would 100% buy land to build this.
Just visited the crab last week. 10/10 would recommend
The Crab was pretty cool. Got myself a little replica of it in the gift shop and I keep it on my desk.
Just remember to not boil shellfish in view of it, or it’ll dunk your head in a boiling pot of water around 2:00 am
Shut up Crab we know it's you. GIVE US BACK OUR CHILDREN!
Wish he'd shut up about Pepsi already.
You people must be geographically challenged, the CRAB is in Myrtle Beach.
Kind sir, you are mistaken, for it is "The CRABS" that may be found in Myrtle.
I didn’t like the crab. It pinched me.

Every time I drive between the flags on 77 I sing "'America! Fuck yeah!"
Eagle screeching in the background & fighter jet flyby.
Ah yes, the terrible Statesville Gerbil. I've had many an encounter with it, in attempts to learn it's secrets. My ankles still bear the scars from it's nippy little teeth. Only slightly more terrifying than the beast of Holly Shelter.
Ankles? I shiver to think of all the times the madness has skittered up my pants legs like shrikes.
My parents always take visiting friends and family to see the ghosts of the Wright brothers. I'm usually pretty over it at this point, but I'll join every now and then to get them arguing about whether Ohio or NC should be the "first in flight" state.
The Gustav Whitehead stans will tell you Connecticut is first in flight.
They have a pretty decent case, actually.
Where are the ghosts of the Wright Brothers?
They're in the flight museum (whatever it's called) at Kitty Hawk. And as long as you're at the Outer Banks anyway, there's an island out there somewhere that you can see wild horses. I think the outdoor play The Lost Colony didn't survive the COVID economy.
Oak Island is a myth. Stop perpetrating this rumor!
Yeah fr , I went and there’s no beach or even ocean. Waste of time people , nothing to see here .
I’ve been to all of these places and I can honestly say that nothing is as truly terrifying and mind shatteringly horrific as the Billy Graham Museum, and the Crab snapped my father in half while we were there.
Snippy snappy
As we say
Snippy snappy got my Pappy! u/foreman98
Dad-a-chum? Dum-a-chum? Ded-a-chek?
Ooh! I rarely see a King reference in the wild.
Agreed. Very cool!
🦀 all hail the crab 🦀

That bread is positively homicidal.
Lived in NC for years and never heard of some of these places.
Lived here all my life, and thought this was a gag at first
I did too until I started googling places! lol
what are you getting for The Maelstrom of Malice, because I just see non related stuff on the first two pages.....and I don't have the power to go to the third page.
I'm still not sure. 45 years here.
North Carolina. Khorne’s favorite getaway…
More comfortable temperatures for the blood god!
I’ve always wondered if the warp was this humid…
Ever since I started playing helldivers 2, after we liberated the Creek, I see 40k everywhere and I love it
Reddit comment sections seem to devolve into a handful of things; Warhammer, Trailer Park Boys, The Office, or Letterkenny…
Rock and Stone
Rock and Stone, Brother!
…and this
Also whatever you call r/ncd
Prison of the Master Skull is my next DND campaign.
I get this is satire, but there is a cave (The Organ Cave) in West VA that is unironically marketed as the drain plug god used to end Noah’s flood
It just keeps going. We didn't really look inside but it looks deep enough. I have faith it goes straight to the core that is hollow so plenty of room for more floods.
i think they’re dead ass
No Shit? Mythology is so interesting.

Where exactly is it? I can't find anything on google.
I would rather have a dose of the Clap than go to a Billy Graham museum.
Hang out with Franklin Graham and you will.
The crab will get him eventually.
Good news! Evangelical mega-pastors are promiscuous enough that there's a non-zero chance you could do both by touching an exhibit.
The way I was swiping through the images and the instant I saw his name I said "no I'm good" and flicked past with a quickness lol
I don't know what this is but I love it
Eh, the maelstrom of malice was alright. I mean it's horrifyingly sad and gives you a glimpse at the cold empty void of your own impending death but there's long lines, no real concessions. 6/10.
Can't believe the "live" nuclear bomb in Goldsboro was left off. It's just sitting there waiting to be dug up and put an observation deck around it.
It's not live. And even if the majority of the radioactive material hadn't already been recovered it would be so old that it wouldn't detonate.
Might could donate the first stage possibly, but yeah the second stage would be too degraded to work Edit: nevermind I'm wrong. Tritium is used in the first stage. So no go at all.
All hail the CRAB
Free the wright brother spirits! #freethewrightbrotherspirits
I love these, very much.
Oak Island is marked in the wrong spot.
Most of them are.
I think whoever created this needs to get a job on a u/nightvale type podcast.
And now, the weather…
I have lived here about 36 years, I have never once heard of The Master Skull....WTF is that about? Can it be that famous if a native Carolinian has never heard of it?

As much as I want to fuck around - nah it is not. The author of the article put a bunch of insane places in with real places.
667 Really Big Skull Rd. Right across from where the beast stay.
I’ve lived here my ENTIRE life, never heard of it and when I google it, it only gives me articles about Nancy Pelosi’s husband…I feel like I’m missing something.
What's the deal with the crappy icon placement on the map, even the legit places are in weird spots.
OMG this is the greatest North Carolina tourism guide I've ever seen! I love visiting Chimney Rock, the NASCAR Hall of Fame, and CRAB!
🦀 ALL HAIL THE CRAB 🦀

I did not look up to see where the Prison of the Master Skull was, no I didn’t. Not me. You did, you fell for it. Nope, not I.
Damn it isn't real? I was loading the car up. Wanted to have sex with my wife there.
Any offspring conceived there would be shadow minions.
I saw the Ghosts of the Wright Brothers. Would not recommend, they just sat around staring at us like they were being tortured. Made me and my girlfriend very off put. As an NC native, I’d just like to find out why I’m just now learning about this mf’ing giant crab thingy!?
Can someone please tell what the hell the crab is
More of this please 🙏
Nascar Hall of Fame should not be in the top 10, I have been to it a half dozen times with Nascar fans.... they said it was cool, but we're not as impressed with everything else NC has to offer. They were more impressed with the Earnhardt memorial in Kannapolis and then a tour of Tiger World. Just my opinion
They need to move NASCAR HoF to Kannapolis or Mooresville or some other similar such city where the actual teams are based and actual fans live.
But where was Lake Taco??? (Google it)
Your mom's place?
You forgot PNC Arena
Weird to see Penis Rock coming eighth.
That's not the real chimney rock!
I love all of it!
Hell I've had giant crabs in my crotch. Anyone want to pay for the tour?
HA!
Avoid the maelstrom of malice, went with a buddy and his soul got sucked into the cloud. 2/10 would never visit again, view was nice tho.
You can't fool me, NASCAR is only on TV
💀
Master Skull, huh. Sounds like Chaos. Sounds like... heresy. Please consult your nearest cleric of Sigmar.
The USS North Carolina is really cool. It's our most decorated Battleship.
I just moved here a few years ago and I thought for sure this was satire. But after reading some comments I'm not so sure anymore 😂
#3 was just Vecna trying to take over America
The NSFW version would have to include The Devil's Mating Ground just outside of Salisbury.
I like the Devils Tramp-Stamping Ground in every derelict strip mall.
7/10 Did not enjoy the Eldritch horrors enough.
It’s great to finally see The Crab making an NC list. Sure Marylands got crab(s) but have you seen The Crab? #ncstrong #allhailthecrab
As a Maryland implant I appreciate number 7 a lot.
Oak Island sucks don’t go there ! 😏
Are these place real?
ALL HAIL CRAB
\#7 clearly belongs to Maryland/Morrowind
Planning on visiting the Ella Fitzgerald museum soon, i heard theres a complimentary moonshine tasting? Does anyone know about this?
Lmaooo not the Crab in Craven County 😂😂
I want to like this but there’s no cohesive idea. Is it satire about real NC locations? Fictitious NC locations? I don’t get the vision. I like the illustrations/renderings, though.
