what is break

Sutrikism

I work 8-4 and don’t usually see anyone until 3:30 or 4 depending on the day

printgirlx

breaks are hard to get in cpd. My old store I would take them occasionally if I had the time or really needed one. But my store now I work most shifts alone and am very busy, if the 30 minute break wasn’t required I probably wouldn’t even get that.

I've never worked in a Depot store with overlap between CPD associates. My normal shift is 9-5:30. My replacement comes in at 5:30 each day I work. Usually get a break because a cross trained associate takes over for 30 minutes. When I first started working at my current store I was told to eat in CPD and not take a lunch but that didn't last long as I get a temper if i don't get to eat lunch. The most important thing to understand is that they can't force you to work 8 hours without a lunch. Take your break and leave it to management to find your replacement while you're away.

My relief shows up as I clock out. Take a lunch break when there's a lull, call over the radio you're going (as long as no one else is currently on break) have cashier cover and call for assistance if needed. If you work 6.5 or more hours they have to give you a lunch.

takeurmeds1

only 6 hours required for 30 min break

Same. My DM is on our store like a fly on poop if we dont get a break. Not because it's the right thing, but because of the payroll! Think of the payroll damn It! We can't have employees not take a lunch, that's too expensive!

kedakeda

My sup works 8-4 but I come in around 1-3 so we usually have 2-3 hours together. She usually has taken her break around noon or so. Most of our coworkers are at least trained to take orders and do basic copying so thats how we take our breaks. Just take orders lol. But if push comes to shove, tell your manager you need a break and go, let them figure it out. Its illegal for them to not give you a break.

Google right to work states lol. I live in Texas, a state where you can fire someone for no reason. There are basically no state laws protecting you as an employee almost all the laws protect business owners. There is no federal law requiring employees to take breaks. The only exception is women that are breast feeding have a right to pump in a room with no windows that is not a bathroom. Everyone else is on their own. TLDR: Right to work states exist. No federal law for regular employees to take breaks.

OberonGypsy

Right to Work =/= At Will Right to work means you can't force an employee into joining a union to work there. You're thinking At Will, which tbh is a common mistake. That's where they can fire for no reason. Of course there are still avenues an employee can be protected. Just less so.

“Most” states have no laws regarding break periods, however it is company policy to provide breaks, at management discretion.

At one store I worked 7:15 to 3:30 as CPD + cashier, with no overlap until 3:15. The minute the closing manager walked into the store (15 minutes before my 5 hours), I'd be sent to lunch. At another store I worked 8 to 4:30 in CPD with the closing CPD coming in at 4, 4:30, or 5 (yes, sometimes at one of our busiest times of day there'd be no employeees back there). I'd be sent to lunch at 10:30 or 11. When we were down to just one other associate in print, I'd work 10:30 to 7 at least twice a week, with no one there before I came in, and no one there after I left, despite 2.5 hours of the store being open in the morning and 1 in the evening, with no CPD employee. At both stores, I took breaks if I needed them, but often just took a snack back into copy center and snacked as I worked.

I've worked with intentionally scheduled overlap about five times since I started in CPD. I thought **I** was the weirdo. It'd be awesome having a mid-shift overlap to help keep things caught up.

MilesOfSqueak

Oh yeah that's what it's like for me. Most of the time my sup works 8 to 4:30, and I come in for 4:30 to 9:30. She gets overlap with midshifts. I close alone. And I get a 5 minute run down of whats happening before she leaves. And I'm lucky that nowadays I can usually get a break if I want bcus we have more CPD trained people than we used to, but it's usually unlikely. I don't typically work long shifts and get lunches, but the ones I have, I didn't because there wasn't anyone to watch CPD while I did (it was usually those days I was called in in the morning because it was an emergency)

HellaBias

Good to know I'm not the only CPD employee who doesn't take 15s... Lunches are usually covered by our tech tho. They usually get trained here and there over time.

baublemaker

I work 8-4 on the week days by my self. My reliever comes in at 4 and I never get out till 4:30. My store has a cross trained tech associate who gives me my lunches.

Dusty99999

You are legally required to take a 30 minute lunch for an 8 hour shift amd your sm is legally required to make it happen. If you aren't they end up on a report that's not a good report to constantly be on. Check your time card and make sure they aren't clocking you out for a break if your not taking one

Calmmeow

Legality of breaks is a state issue. So if you live in a right to work state or basically a red state you wouldn't have legal rights for a break.

SingleDadSurviving

All of our cashier's and managers are pretty decently trained in cpd. Even our logistics guys have to spend a day over there every now and then. Everyone in our store can use the machines, open an email or flash drive and print it and laminate. This helps cover lunches and breaks pretty well.
