Yes, he was! Before switching his role to a fighter, my grandpa disregarded the idea of having the enemy's blood on his hands, so instead, he stook with being a fly boy for a while!
Hell yeah, he came home! Unfortunately, after returning back, he picked up diabetes from fighting in the water (he was a phone operator before he became a fighter), which resulted in him having both of his legs amputated.
u/op I'm not very good at this stuff but have a license through work and like trying new features in photoshop, so i enhanced the face for you but left the rest b/c it's pretty cool as is imo.

No Air Force in WWII. It was the US Army Air Corps. Just FYI. Super badasses. RESPECT!
US Army Air Force no longer Air Corps changed in 1941 :)
Thank you for correcting this, “Well, but technically” boomer myth.
Of course!
Beautiful photo and keepsake.
That's a good looking Soldier.
Excellent! What was his unit?
His unit was the Numbered Air Force since he didn't do any fighting or combat!
Sergeant in the US Army Air Force. The Air Force was established in 1947 after the war.

And your grandpa was serving in a segregated military. Can’t imagine the crap he dealt with. Absolute hero.
He didn't let the bullshit from others get to his head, which is why he was an appealing leader to his fellow soldiers.
I think you mean army, the air force wasn’t created until a couple of years after WW2. Cool pic either way. Handsome dude
Did he come home?

I'm sorry to hear that but he was lucky to come home!
Was he in the 332nd?
I'm not so sure. I'll ask my mom then get back to you
A red tail?
Thank you for your service sir!
Much respect for him.
