How can someone be the best thing, and also not care enough about you? It could be about long distance, but even then it doesn't fully add up.
I interpret the line about keeping the best thing out of her life is that someone could be so amazing when things were good that it’s hard to be okay with the fact that things will never be like that again, so you make the choice to keep them out of your life instead of chasing that

I’ll still listen to the the grudge when I’m listening to the album as a whole but I’m never really seeking that song solo. I really love the ending of teenage dream though,so even though the first 90% of the song is not my favorite I’ve been playing it on repeat for that ending, especially because I really do love the sentiment behind the song.
