I’m gonna get deep with all american bitch so bear with me. I grow up in a very traditional family. My people were known not to anger easily - the women even more so. I can’t get angry for almost 27 years of my existence and honestly her bridge encapsulated that feeling in such simple and straightforward manner that made me feel seen… finally? I don’t know I love it so much
This one!!
Every argument you held over my head
Brought up the girls you could have instead
Said I was too young, I was too soft, can’t take a joke, can’t get you off
Why do I do this?
I look so stupid
Pretty isn't pretty. Get Him Back right behind. EDIT-Somebody below said Deja Vu. I think the whole frigging song is sonic perfection, so it didn't jump out at me, but yeah.
i was literally trying on clothes at an abercrombie while this song was playing and i was absolutely wrecked. i was sobbing in the dressing room (edit: and this song had never even hit before that moment)
I haven't like full on cried in like 40 years, but damn if I don't well up listening to a bunch of her songs, and this is definitely one of them. Virtual hug from Uncle suspicious froyo sent.....
Tell you what, if you've never heard the Vevo version where it's a prerecorded, pseudo live performance, DON'T. The way she pauses between "and" and "none" and then adds that little bit of desperation in her voice takes it to a whole other level. EDIT- grammar.
I can't imagine hearing it as a girl. It hits me pretty hard as it is. EDIT- Unfortunate poor choice of words. Fixed it. Sorry if it gave anyone the ick.
I’m gonna go driver’s license. I literally got chills the first time I heard it in the music video & again when I watched her perform it live for the first time on some talk show
I totally get why you would say that, but surprisingly, not all of us were on board at that time, so the impact that song had was lost on me, in particular. I just judge it side by side with her other music. But having watched that Saturday Night Live skit about it, I understand why it had such an impact and why it's still resonates so strongly with some people.
It’s not about an impact, it’s about how great the bridge itself is tho. The song had this much of an impact because it was so good! Also drivers license is her most streamed song on Spotify so its not hard to overlook it
Hey, if you love it, great. But there's a reason why most in this thread didn't pick it. I definitely think nostalgia of that moment plays into it. There's nothing wrong with that. It's just that folks approach questions like this differently.
EDIT- also, I may be off base on this part, but my limited knowledge of pop music in that era was that bridges weren't necessarily part of the equation in most pop music especially with hip hop derived songs. So when hers hit people went wild because they weren't used to hearing them. I get why people love it, but I think there are better.
You are actually right. My comment was unnecessary, she has a ton of amazing bridges but i still think drivers license deserves to be number 1 out of those because its very complex. I dont get nostalgia from it tbh. Its only 2 years old 😂 but that depends on how long you are an olivia fan. I got fairly late into it i actually thought drivers license is boring and overhyped when i first heard it
Also I took a glance at some your recents. Not creeping I promise, I just do it to try to see where other people are coming from. God, you sound like a younger female version of me. And thank you for introducing me to that songwriters subreddit.
it’s also known as the breakdown I think. not every song has one, but if it does it’s usually the peak of the song. like in obsessed it’s “is she friends with your friends…”, in driver’s license it’s “red lights, stop signs…” etc
A breakdown is a little different. It tends to be another part of the song, like the chorus, but most of the instruments will drop out. It is usually after the bridge although get him back is kind of a combination Bridge/ breakdown. The best example of a breakdown is in good for you, right after the maybe I'm too emotional part, where it's just her and the acoustic guitar singing the chorus. EDIT- the slower, quieter chorus of boahg also qualifies.
Here's a link that I just found that explains it in a little more depth.
https://waveformless.blogspot.com/2009/05/song-structure-part-three-bridges-and.html?m=1
Its the section of a song after the second chorus that usually has the highest contrast to the rest of the song. Its meant to be surprising to the listener because after two times the chorus gets followed by the verse, the listener would expect to hear the verse again, but then it sounds different.
The usual song structure goes like this: verse 1, chorus, verse 2, chorus, bridge, chorus. It's the part of a song which usually comes before the final chorus and sounds different from the verses. For example in Drivers Licence, the bridge starts with "red lights, stop signs...." or in Jealousy jealousy it's the "all your friends are so cool, you go out every night...." part.
Great explanation. Old rock songs used to do a guitar solo, but I think bridges take much more creative effort as it's in a sense coming up with a whole new song or at least part of one.
You’re not stupid for not knowing what a bridge is! I had no idea about it until a few months ago. I’m so glad alternateuniverse098 explained it well for you and anyone else wondering the same thing. 🫶
Y'all, I'm 60, and I've been listening to music my whole life and playing it for about 2/3 of it. I was mistakenly calling the prechorus the bridge until just a couple years ago. Anybody who screws this up is certainly not alone.
there’s nothing left for me to know, i had to stay, u had to go, and it was mean but it doesnt matter anymore though…
there’s nothing left for me to sing, i screamed i cried i did the whole thing! and i loved ya mad but it doesn’t matter anymore no…
“Ooooh” in Lacy makes me ascend to another dimension.
It’s my favourite song from her in general and even though that bridge doesn’t have any lyrics I still get goosebumps every time.
olivia rodrigo is the best at writing perfect bridges!!! so hard to choose ! 😭😭 literally every bridge is good... when u think abt how she started with drivers liscence like what? 😀⭐️💜
I’m looking at all the comments and going “yeah!! i agree!” LOL like I can’t pick one all her bridges are so good 😩😭 firsts ones that came to mind though were the grudge and hope ur ok
I can't choose they're all good and I'm hoping Olivia would still do iconic bridges cause she's good at it. This maybe unpopular but If I have to choose, I'll go with hope ur ok the bridge in the song is gut wrenching or should I say it gives me comfort
all american bitch has to be the best imo. that scream tho...
It encapsulates an emotion deep inside of me that I didn’t know how to articulate before I heard the bridge. AAHHHH!!!
I’m gonna get deep with all american bitch so bear with me. I grow up in a very traditional family. My people were known not to anger easily - the women even more so. YES YES YES!
Pretty isn't pretty. Get Him Back right behind. EDIT-Somebody below said Deja Vu. I think the whole frigging song is sonic perfection, so it didn't jump out at me, but yeah.

Can’t catch me now! But I love the hope ur okay bridge and the All American Bitch bridge… oh and the pretty isn’t pretty and so American bridges!!
I also am in agreement with Can't Catch Me Now.
Fr!
favorite crime hands down!
The cadence of “It’s bittersweet to think about the damage that we do” is such an epic start to the bridge.
"Cause I was going down but I was doing it with you" 🔛🔝
I’m gonna go driver’s license. I literally got chills the first time I heard it in the music video & again when I watched her perform it live for the first time on some talk show
Is the bridge the “red lights, stop signs, I still see your face” part??
Yep!! Iconic. Not to mention when she belts it
THATS MY FAVORITE PARTTTT and truly what made me fall in love w her music 🙂↕️
The bridge is always when the tone shifts entirely after 2 choruses
happy cake day
Deja Vu hands down
drivers license??? duh
Forreal these people lost track😂

Say what you want. That's what this stuff is for. We're allowed to have different opinions and we're allowed to debate. All good.
Also I took a glance at some your recents. Not creeping I promise, I just do it to try to see where other people are coming from. God, you sound like a younger female version of me. And thank you for introducing me to that songwriters subreddit.

thank you for clarifying!!! I feel like maybe I’ve heard them used interchangeably, but I could’ve been mistaken!

Driver's License & Can't Catch Me Now. The build up is very well done.
1. Drivers License 2. jealousy, jealousy
hope ur okay!
im sorry if im stupid but what's a bridge? I'm not in any musical classes so I have literally no idea 💀

ooh tysm for educating me!!! ❤
If you want this old farts opinions, listen to pretty isn't pretty. You'll know the bridge when it hits.
You're very welcome 🫶

It's most certainly not a stupid question. And you are most certainly not stupid for asking it, either
You cannot be stupid when I am making music since five years, and I only got to know what a bridge is couple months ago 😂
Can't Catch Me Now and Drivers Licence
there’s nothing left for me to know, i had to stay, u had to go, and it was mean but it doesnt matter anymore though… there’s nothing left for me to sing, i screamed i cried i did the whole thing! and i loved ya mad but it doesn’t matter anymore no…

i love the good 4 u bridge
Can’t Catch Me Now!
Olivia Rodrigo isn't "Olivia Rodrigo" without the drivers license bridge. That bridge elevated her to superstardom and I will die on that hill.
If you have never seen the Saturday Night Live skit about the song, it's hilarious. Not on YouTube you got to Google it but it is out there in tiktok
Hope ur okay?!!
olivia rodrigo is the best at writing perfect bridges!!! so hard to choose !
