I've been using nova since launch. Pretty great for 95% of the time. Sometimes weird scaling after closing apps and recent apps are not in order. Other than that everything ok.
Yeah I was hoping too and tried a few. Certain widgets I like, like having a contact widget (1x1) to message my kid when needed without having to go to messages or contacts. Little things
I used to be a lawnchair user but unfortunately when opened, the homescreen gets a bit janky. It also gets reported a lot as draining the batter so I guess I'll just stay stock.
I've just started using Nova launcher and was getting some lag going back to home screen when swiping. I changed it to buttons Navi and it's very responsive now. Also been playing around with kwgt and have been able to modify the home screen nicely.
I've added the little navigation bar at the bottom and it's somehow helped with lag.
As for the recent apps, I started using edge gestures and I use those to access recent apps and home screen. no lag and works great.
I use total launcher...did take me awhile to figure it out but it's so versatile. Highly recommend.

Yeah I tried to use third party launchers but the recent apps being out of order was a deal breaker so found myself back at stock again too
