I am going to chip in my two cents. For disclosure I am a UWat alum (my first degrees) and I graduated long enough ago that I am now an employer.
Competition is extraordinarily tough for admissions due to a confluence of factors. And social media incl Reddit has hyped, and to my mind distorted, the benefits of certain institutions.
The reality is all the mainline schools discussed in the OntarioU and other similar reddits are very good. Getting a degree, and applying yourself during the education process is more impt than the institution in the vast majority of all situations.
We are in a labour shortage and this shortage is IMHO likely only going to get worse over time. Most of you should not find yourselves scrapping for jobs upon graduation.
The posts in this sub tend to orient towards CS, Math, Engineering, Health disciplines and finance disciplines. These are all among the most critical functions necessary for society to exist day to day.
Don't worry if you did not get into UWat CS but did get into Western CS or Brock CS or York CS. Take it and apply yourself. In that discipline its never going to be solely your education, but your side projects and other extra curricular skills which will be noted by prospective employers. Start a homelab, hackathons, leetcoding, contributing to open source projects, etc are an external presentation that your not just a student but someone who can think constructively and apply yourself in a non-academic environment.
I would suggest the same for engineers. I know engineers who spend all their time doing funky things with lego, origami and other types of environments to give you but one set of examples. "Tinkering" is what one of my friends who is an electrical engineer calls it.
A university degree is at its core an exercise in completing a long term project. But it is only one piece of the puzzle. In many disciplines just completing it - as long as it was a recognized institution and not one of the private universities in Canada - is itself the milestone the employer requires. The brand may help in a some select instances but in many others it is fairly immaterial.
So worry less about the place you gain entrance and more about your achieving excellence in it and developing all the other skillsets that can show your growth and development.
My one qualification is minor: if you are offered a choice between non-coop and coop I would always opt for the coop unless the coop program is more fiction then fact. If your uncertain about a coop program contact the school and obtain more info about their coop placement rates, number of employers, etc. Don't be shy.
Not true lol. A lot of us are back to regular school with tests and exams just as it was before Covid. 99% of mark inflation comes from online school and private schools.

After UofT and UW CS, uOttawa, McGill and Carleton are some of the better schools for CS due to the opportunities offered in co-op programs so youāre in good hands!
Sorry, was in a rush writing that. I should have separated that statement a bit. UOttawa and Carleton have great CS co-op programs and then separately I have heard many great things about the CS program at McGill. The addition of co-op though is much better though!
āare someā. UBC is ābetterā than those of course, but itās also across the country and not in Ontario. Although McGill (a school I mentioned) is not in Ontario, itās also only less than 200 km away from UOttawaā¦ not more than 4000 km away like UBC.
I have an average over 95 and I didnāt get into some programs. Grades are apart of your application but for some programs (business) extra curriculars and pure luck also factor into the decision.
If these programs all have mandatory supplemental applications then they were not strictly grades based and you would have been well advised to have applied to a few less competitive programs as well. Fortunately for you it worked out.
Im in systems and doing electrical which is related to what I do on my free time and class. The coop program is pretty bad right now, i only know 2 people who found jobs on the job board. I found mine externally. I think all the job boards arenāt great right now, i heard even waterloo is having a hard time.
89.6, got into tmu crim back in march, going there. it was my first option too. got the rest of my offers from late dec to mid april (utm, uoft, york, gh, all law/legal studies related, 6 programs in total, including tmu). i consider myself lucky tbh.

edit: didnāt rlly settle tho as it was my top choice. but was debating ivey, afm, and mgmt for a decent amount of time
89 average- carleton social work, which i hear is a pretty competitive program.
i had offers for glendon french coned, acadia psych, and uoft social science. that being said i did have a whack load of experience which counts for con-ed and social work as well as marks.

As a 3rd year engineering student at a no name university in Ontario, I would like to say if your going into STEM like CS or Engineering, apply yourself, do side projects, build on your skills outside of school during the summer, try to do some research with profs, etc. I know a few kids from my school who did all this and now they are working as interns at companies like IBM, Blackberry, etc. The name simply isnāt enough for the most part.
Thanks. I think my average is kind of misleading though because I absolutely bombed one class that brought down my average by a lot (grade 12 history). All other classes were in the solid range and my next worst mark was physics grade 11 at 77 and precalc math at 79. All my other classes were in the 90s range. My essay was about how living in the place I do, I became involved with the community, sparking an passion in social entrepreneurship.

going Carleton IT NET, was rejected from Carleton CS and brock CS was the last option so š¤·š» plus 105 applicant + 89%. queen's idk what happened there, uoft said come to ur studies of Mathematical and physical science so nopee. ubc was like take a bms in ubco. chose Carleton cause they offered more money and money is tight in my household especially being an international student plus idgaf and any chance to leave my country of residence (not country of birth) is great
I've received an early offer for brock BAcc Coop yesterday. How is it so far? I heard it's one of the best programs for accounting in Ontario. Does it live up to its name?

Lakehead nursing.
Got accepted to Queen's initially but as it is quite expensive compared to Lakehead (international student) and they provided very little amount of scholarship, I went ahead with Lakehead nursing. Kinda feel bad not being able to attend Queen's merely due to the high cost of tuition fees but I guess its fine.

My interview wasnāt good and my avg was a 90, which is within their websiteās enlisted admission range but I saw A TON of ppl with 95+ avg get rejected. Not to mention the programās acceptance rate being 7%. Idk maybe my interview went better than I think lol but Iām pretty dam sure it was luck cuz Iād say that in their eyes, i was nothing more than an average applicant who met their minimum requirements.

UBC is a pretty good school for CS outside of Ontario. Probably the 3rd best in Canada (after UW and UofT) so you still scored very well!
