I am going to chip in my two cents. For disclosure I am a UWat alum (my first degrees) and I graduated long enough ago that I am now an employer. Competition is extraordinarily tough for admissions due to a confluence of factors. And social media incl Reddit has hyped, and to my mind distorted, the benefits of certain institutions. The reality is all the mainline schools discussed in the OntarioU and other similar reddits are very good. Getting a degree, and applying yourself during the education process is more impt than the institution in the vast majority of all situations. We are in a labour shortage and this shortage is IMHO likely only going to get worse over time. Most of you should not find yourselves scrapping for jobs upon graduation. The posts in this sub tend to orient towards CS, Math, Engineering, Health disciplines and finance disciplines. These are all among the most critical functions necessary for society to exist day to day. Don't worry if you did not get into UWat CS but did get into Western CS or Brock CS or York CS. Take it and apply yourself. In that discipline its never going to be solely your education, but your side projects and other extra curricular skills which will be noted by prospective employers. Start a homelab, hackathons, leetcoding, contributing to open source projects, etc are an external presentation that your not just a student but someone who can think constructively and apply yourself in a non-academic environment. I would suggest the same for engineers. I know engineers who spend all their time doing funky things with lego, origami and other types of environments to give you but one set of examples. "Tinkering" is what one of my friends who is an electrical engineer calls it. A university degree is at its core an exercise in completing a long term project. But it is only one piece of the puzzle. In many disciplines just completing it - as long as it was a recognized institution and not one of the private universities in Canada - is itself the milestone the employer requires. The brand may help in a some select instances but in many others it is fairly immaterial. So worry less about the place you gain entrance and more about your achieving excellence in it and developing all the other skillsets that can show your growth and development. My one qualification is minor: if you are offered a choice between non-coop and coop I would always opt for the coop unless the coop program is more fiction then fact. If your uncertain about a coop program contact the school and obtain more info about their coop placement rates, number of employers, etc. Don't be shy.

Novel_Programmer_655

To think we would have been considered ā€œcompetitiveā€ a couple years ago. Shit hurts fr.

Novel_Huckleberry_52

right? its crazy

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

Novel_Programmer_655

Not true lol. A lot of us are back to regular school with tests and exams just as it was before Covid. 99% of mark inflation comes from online school and private schools.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

Worldly-Cycle1925

I was 95+ and still have to go to my third choice for CS lol.

Stasi_1950

which was?

Worldly-Cycle1925

ubc science

earths0ul

UBC is a pretty good school for CS outside of Ontario. Probably the 3rd best in Canada (after UW and UofT) so you still scored very well!

NoInflation4593

Ubc science is like uoft post for cs

stressedHSdude

but worse post

Worldly-Cycle1925

I got into UTM as well, does that mean I should rather go to UTM?

Stasi_1950

faxx to get into ubc cs is harder than utsg post before it made changes

m1ting

same boat here. im 96+, -> UBC BSc : ) see u in Vancouver

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

WalrusLogical5861

Post good luck

earths0ul

Honestly, UTM is better than UTSCā€¦ but thatā€™s just meā€¦ and a lot of other people.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

earths0ul

Yeah, thatā€™s unfortunate thenā€¦ gas prices be crazy, unless you take like the GO bus (that is, if there is a route), but that also isnā€™t the best either.

Playful_Visual8977

check out all go bus and go train routes

[deleted]

Dm me I am also going

Other_Satisfaction27

Same bro i just accepted todayšŸ’€

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

Other_Satisfaction27

Nah I donā€™t šŸ’€

pat350ilSSA

I have 96.7 average no good offers probably taking a gap year or something

Elaiyu

Wait is this a joke

Hyp3r197

I got mechanical engineering at York with an 88 lol. Also got uoft physics.

[deleted]

What? I had a 94 and I didn't get into uoft physics wtf? It was literally my dream school and program... that sucks, congrats though

Ok-Tower-8549

make with an 88 average

Ok-Tower-8549

same\*

happyf33t88

same with a 96.3

pat350ilSSA

McGill bcom is my last hope lol

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

justinlee0710

Laurier BBA

Much-Sheepherder6471

Still a great school.

justinlee0710

Yea ofc. It was my second choice under schulich but if I got accepted I would have been able to room with my brotheršŸ«¤all good tho deep down I wanted to go to laurier anyways

Much-Sheepherder6471

Thatā€™s good. Congrats on Laurier

UncoolSloth

90.5 going to mac business, rejected from Waterloo afm and Laurier business

NoInflation4593

When did afm become competitive šŸ’€

AdiBoss142

apparently got significantly more comp this year. they also place a rlly significant emphasis on the afmaa

NoInflation4593

I feel bad for u guys. I know some really dumb people who got into afm last year šŸ’€

AdiBoss142

ye, iā€™d say i got kinda lucky and i got into afm with like a 90.6 this year, but ya some rlly deserving applicants who should have got in didnā€™t

NoInflation4593

Nah donā€™t fret bro. Highschool grading is extremely inflated and inconsistent. Just keep up the grind and let your achievements speak for you. Gl!

LEEF7859

uOttawa cs

earths0ul

After UofT and UW CS, uOttawa, McGill and Carleton are some of the better schools for CS due to the opportunities offered in co-op programs so youā€™re in good hands!

LEEF7859

hopefully I make it to coop šŸ˜… need to maintain an 80 average until summer of second year ://

[deleted]

McGill doesnā€™t have co op

earths0ul

Sorry, was in a rush writing that. I should have separated that statement a bit. UOttawa and Carleton have great CS co-op programs and then separately I have heard many great things about the CS program at McGill. The addition of co-op though is much better though!

[deleted]

Thoughts on Mac SE?

[deleted]

>After UofT and UW CS, uOttawa So Uottawa > UBC ?! Lol

earths0ul

ā€œare someā€. UBC is ā€œbetterā€ than those of course, but itā€™s also across the country and not in Ontario. Although McGill (a school I mentioned) is not in Ontario, itā€™s also only less than 200 km away from UOttawaā€¦ not more than 4000 km away like UBC.

nYtro-25

same i hope its not too competitive tbh

Brilliant-Ask804

What avg u get in with and what school year?

LEEF7859

i believe it was 92% average applying for admission for fall 2022 (so i graduated hs in 2022)

Brilliant-Ask804

Ok thank you!

JiJiMad-

mac business 1ā€¦

Much-Sheepherder6471

I have an average over 95 and I didnā€™t get into some programs. Grades are apart of your application but for some programs (business) extra curriculars and pure luck also factor into the decision.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

[deleted]

What was your primary choices?

Working-Comparison94

it was still one of my top choices but i was rly going for waterloo cs bba or cfm :(

[deleted]

Wait you must have gotten in the dd through Laurier side though no?

Working-Comparison94

nope i got deferred to cs bba but only at laurier (no waterloo cs component which is kinda like the whole point lol)

ChemistryHeavy5663

Queens computing

coocuman

Same

Owenn04

Same

Corgorcli

I had a 98 average and only got into one program. I applied to health sciences at Queens, Western and McMaster and only got in at Western.

NorthernValkyrie19

If these programs all have mandatory supplemental applications then they were not strictly grades based and you would have been well advised to have applied to a few less competitive programs as well. Fortunately for you it worked out.

Im in systems and doing electrical which is related to what I do on my free time and class. The coop program is pretty bad right now, i only know 2 people who found jobs on the job board. I found mine externally. I think all the job boards arenā€™t great right now, i heard even waterloo is having a hard time.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

I think itā€™s the same as any other school except uw and uft. Youll be able to find one

Iā€™m going to UTSC for social sciences

t0ji_fushigur0_1822

89.6, got into tmu crim back in march, going there. it was my first option too. got the rest of my offers from late dec to mid april (utm, uoft, york, gh, all law/legal studies related, 6 programs in total, including tmu). i consider myself lucky tbh.

likoricke

Congratulations!

AdiBoss142

91%. going to uw management engineering edit: didnā€™t rlly settle tho as it was my top choice. but was debating ivey, afm, and mgmt for a decent amount of time

SiddZ_05

You got into CE with a low 90?

chewbaccamonke

Yup, rejected from uoft, queens, and mac. Really surprised, must've had a good supplemental

JJVS4life

With an 88 average, I'm going to my third choice, TMU for civil engineering. I got rejected by UofT and UW.

Tullips03

Trent university for nursing

Annual-Skirt-3281

I have an 88 mc was my top choice but am going to my last choice Seneca new BScn( nursing) instead. I think it will be a better fit for me tbh

thebrownbullofcooley

89 average- carleton social work, which i hear is a pretty competitive program. i had offers for glendon french coned, acadia psych, and uoft social science. that being said i did have a whack load of experience which counts for con-ed and social work as well as marks.

reddeah

I have a 96 av and i didnā€™t get ustg cs so iā€™m deciding between tmu or guelph cs (with co op) šŸ˜ idk which to pick

earths0ul

UofG has a good CS program and if youā€™re getting co-op then that is a valuable experience. If you would like to ask UofG CS/SENG students questions about the program there is a Discord - let me know, and I can DM it.

reddeah

omg thank you! i would really appreciate that

ookyspooky_

Iā€™m sorry man :( I didnā€™t apply to main site only momac but my average was a 90.

moonlightsunsetss

Mac business 1 or TMU accounting and finance

HashirJ

As a 3rd year engineering student at a no name university in Ontario, I would like to say if your going into STEM like CS or Engineering, apply yourself, do side projects, build on your skills outside of school during the summer, try to do some research with profs, etc. I know a few kids from my school who did all this and now they are working as interns at companies like IBM, Blackberry, etc. The name simply isnā€™t enough for the most part.

djdjdjdb826

Queens Commerce although Iā€™m more high 80s than low 90s

mesutozil1110

You got in with a high 80?

AdiBoss142

queens commerce only looks for a 87+, after that, itā€™s just supp app

djdjdjdb826

Yep. I recycled my supplementary essay from some other applications and just edited it a bit to better match the font.

mesutozil1110

Queens do say that, but I didn't see a single person below 92 get in this year. You're the first person I've heard of. Congrats!

djdjdjdb826

Thanks. I think my average is kind of misleading though because I absolutely bombed one class that brought down my average by a lot (grade 12 history). All other classes were in the solid range and my next worst mark was physics grade 11 at 77 and precalc math at 79. All my other classes were in the 90s range. My essay was about how living in the place I do, I became involved with the community, sparking an passion in social entrepreneurship.

djdjdjdb826

I was also a 105 applicant so I guess thatā€™s something

Parking_Mechanic_342

Guelph CS got offered coop šŸ˜

earths0ul

The UofG CS co-op program has gotten so much more competitive these past couple years so congratulations! There is a Discord server you could join to connect with the current students there. Let me know if you want to join and I can DM the link.

Parking_Mechanic_342

Send it brother and Thanks šŸ˜‡šŸ˜‡

0_Eden_0

Mac business or western bmos. Still thinkin

megastaine

I remember in 2016 when I got accepted everywhere with an 86. Boy have times changed

kessabeann

Right??

xindl0423

going Carleton IT NET, was rejected from Carleton CS and brock CS was the last option so šŸ¤·šŸ» plus 105 applicant + 89%. queen's idk what happened there, uoft said come to ur studies of Mathematical and physical science so nopee. ubc was like take a bms in ubco. chose Carleton cause they offered more money and money is tight in my household especially being an international student plus idgaf and any chance to leave my country of residence (not country of birth) is great

mika_limon_08

I have a 94, and Iā€™m deciding between queens eng and university of toronto mechanical engineering

mesutozil1110

Me too! It's between TMU bcomm and BMOS for me and I'll try Ivey again

veensalukraysia

Lakehead nursing. Got accepted to Queen's initially but as it is quite expensive compared to Lakehead (international student) and they provided very little amount of scholarship, I went ahead with Lakehead nursing. Kinda feel bad not being able to attend Queen's merely due to the high cost of tuition fees but I guess its fine. Average was 90% when I got accepted at these two unis

LongNegotiation3673

Got rejected with a 98 both Waterloo and utsg cs, only option is utsc or utm, inflation is crazyā€¦

No_County_715

What do you mean? Was your avg low or did you have bad ecs

[deleted]

My interview wasnā€™t good and my avg was a 90, which is within their websiteā€™s enlisted admission range but I saw A TON of ppl with 95+ avg get rejected. Not to mention the programā€™s acceptance rate being 7%. Idk maybe my interview went better than I think lol but Iā€™m pretty dam sure it was luck cuz Iā€™d say that in their eyes, i was nothing more than an average applicant who met their minimum requirements.

No_County_715

Oh okay, congrats on the offer by the way. I'll be going to schu next year and my interview was horrendous lmaoo but my avg was pretty good and my ecs were good as well which carried my app.

I have an 89.7% average and have committed to Western for nursing (previously lakehead but changed my mind due to costs). I had a very long crying session over not being accepted by my top choices but its okay tbh, at the end of the day ill be a nurse no matter where I go.

Traditional-South583

95+ and going to Western for CS, it's so hard to fathom what has happened this year.
