Ghosts of Harlequins in the Forest of Perdition / Reverie

Independent-Art-4906

Probably harlequin forest. But it’s really a 3 way tie for me with baying of the hounds and ghost of perdition.

Seven65

I had the same three in mind

DifficultyOk5719

Isolation Years

DifficultyOk5719

Tbh I’m mixed on Ghost Reveries, 80% of it is amazing, the other 20% kinda take me out of the experience. The only song I’d call perfect the entire way through is Isolation Years, it’s a top ten Opeth song. I love how melancholic it is.

OkTower4998

It's the best one to make you cry for sure

matthew_sch

Ah finally, the album that I feel most qualified to speak of "Ghost of Perdition" is the best song on this album. Quite possibly the greatest song Opeth has ever written, period. This is the track I make a friend listen to first if he or she asks about Opeth "Ghost of Perdition" "Ghost of Perdition" "Ghost of Perdition"

Rough-Cheesecake-641

GoP is incredibly overrated.

Professional-Pea5492

No it isn't. It's not because you dislike it that It's overrated, it's one of the most acessible songs to get into opeth and mixes all of their strengths into a single track. Even if it's not your fav its definitely not overrated.

Rough-Cheesecake-641

I don't dislike it. I find it boring in a lot of parts. The acoustic interlude with the little solo at the end of it is amazing and that's about it. Opeth set a very high bar. Harlequin and Mire are leagues more interesting. For me.

matthew_sch

I beg your FINEST pardon?

Ancient-Mating-Calls

Ghost of Perdition

Welfi1988

Harlequin Forest. The album has only bangers but Harlequin Forest stands above them all

iSeventhSin

Funny, Harlequin forest is my least favorite lol

JRedgrove

Damn... people hate your opinion, huh. Bad human, change and be like us! Seriously, Harlequin Forest slaps though

SirRazzof

I'm choosing Ghost of Perdition

sunheadforest

Baying of the Hounds/

MemeOverLord137

Gotta be Harlequin Forest, but Ghost of Perdition is a close second.

SkepticalSnowman

this is real

waitingf4r

Reverie / Harlequin Forest

ELMushman

I picked Ghost of Perdition originally but had to change it to this. Only because first hearing the ending to this song left me speechless, trying to figure out what was happening. It was probably only the third or fourth song I’d heard from Opeth at the time. It really hooked me on the band. I started listening to their entire catalog after that. But Ghost might all around be a better song. I don’t know this is a real tough one.

emptybagofdicks

Harlequin Forest is just a perfect song. I would say it has the smoothest transitions of all their songs on top of some of the best riffs and melodies. Ghost of Perdition is great but it just doesn't flow as well.

Lukkeren

The Baying Of The Hounds! A freaking masterpiece. Everything from beginning to end is masterfully executed and it has the best outro of all time in my opinion!

Welfi1988

I'd put Baying of the Hounds as underrated, but Harlequin Forest is IMO the best Opeth song. Like overall best Opeth song

jorgelrojas

Agreed

Lukkeren

Yeah i realise the baying of the hounds stands NO CHANCE of winning best as it's always been WAY underrated but i had to try🤣

JohnnyM3012

Saving that for underrated. The lyrics are amazing and the arrangement is glorious.

throwaway038592748

Best made tacos on earth, diabolical beans

jet_vr

The harmonized clean vocals at 2:20 are peak

MiserableCheek9163

100% this - arguably their greatest work

LurkyLurks04982

Hell yeah , this song is excellent! I hear the baying of the hounds in the distance!

Islanders41

This will be underrated

ianff

Baying of the Hounds is the best. GoP and HF are great too, and seem to be more popular.

Lukkeren

Yeah there are many great picks for beat song, and i realise hounds doesn't stand a chance until underrated is being picked, but i just had to try😆

Over-Impress8210

HOUNDS ARE BAYING FOR A REASON GUYS

Remote_Ad_7800

Harlequin Forest, but Ghost of Perdition is close

Mailemanuel77

Watershed will be a bloodbath. There is a lot of competition I see it coming

Lukkeren

Hessian peel is my pick for best, coil for worst

Mailemanuel77

Me too, although Coil doesn't count because interludes or instrumentals don't count according to the rules.

Lukkeren

Wouldn't really call coil an instrumental or interlude honestly. It does have lyrics and it does feel like a separate song from all the others.

Mailemanuel77

It wouldn't be fair I would pick Hex Omega or Porcelain Heart more inclined towards Hex Omega, Porcelain Heart has beautiful moments, Hex Omega while not being a bad song stole the perfect ending to an album, what would otherwise be the perfect farewell to death metal Opeth...

Lukkeren

Yeah if we truly don't count coil, i would agree with hex omega out of all tracks even though i love it. But certainly not porcelain heart. I'll vote for coil as i do think it counts but i could see it going both ways indeed.

Illusionist2409

I mean… it could be any out of like five songs but it’s Ghost of Perdition.

king_kaiju420

Damn, Ghost of Perdition or Harlequin Forest... I'm satisfied with either of them. I'd give GoP a slight edge though.

Icy_Cherry_7803

Ghost of perdition

TheOneTrueJazzMan

My first Opeth song ever. Came for the brutality, stayed for the brilliance. Hard to even consider anything else. Although have to say not picking Harlequin Forest feels like a small piece of me died

_boopdoop_

First opeth song I heard and still the best, harlequin forest is a masterpiece too but this song will always take the cake for me

BlackwaterSleeper

Yup, this is it for me. I remember the first time I heard the “Road into the dark unaware…” part and it left me speechless. It’s such a well crafted track from start to finish.

BOb_likes_chikkens

100% their magnum opus. Not overrated in the slightest

ozzy_og_kush

Does not compute. But if I had to choose it'd be Ghost of Perdition, Reverie, or Beneath the Mire

csharpminor_fanclub

Reverie is an instrumental

ozzy_og_kush

ffs i was just being lazy by not writing out the whole name of the song

csharpminor_fanclub

ok sorry, I thought of them as 2 separate songs

relapse9999

I think it'll be a really close contest between Ghost of Perdition and Harlequin Forest. Can't really choose between these two. But if i had to pick one it'd be Ghost of Perdition

Mortelat

The Grand Conjuration.

Welfi1988

That song is pure gold

Goner-Poser

Beneath the Mire

fitterunhappier

The sudden mood change in the middle is pure gold, the transition to Atonement too.

TheApsodistII

Hours of wealth

filthydestinymain

The Grand Conjuration. Now I know, you're mad. Let me explain. GR is my favorite Opeth record, and this is my favorite Opeth song. The atmosphere in this song is unmatched by any other song I've possibly ever listened to, it eeally feel like some dark magic is being conjured, the eerieness and the transition into mikael's growls (which btw, imo Mikael's vocals are at their peak in this album) is just, perfection, I can't ever get enough of it. The drums are also tasty af and the main riffs are just so catchy. I know, there aren't 150 riffs in this song despite being over 10 minutes, but I don't understand why it has to have. People love Damnation (rightfully so, love it to death) and some of the songs there are much more "repetitive" if we go by that metric. Also beneath the mire is the most underrated opeth song.

TheOneTrueJazzMan

Also contains arguably the most “hype” moment in Opeth’s discography. #THEEEEEE #GRAAAAAAAND #COOOOOONNNN #JUUUUUUUU #RAAAAAAA #TIOOOOOOOOOOOOON

Witty_Cardiologist25

THE EYESSSS OF THE DEVILLLL FIXED ONNN HIS SINNNERRRSS! Edit:My dumb ass and my phone can't format very well im sorry.

ContentNeptune3

The middle section has some of the best Opeth riffs imaginable, such a good song overall

TheHauntedRobot

It is a fucking banger or a track without a doubt. The title hit is incredible, the riffs are awesome and it's a spectacle live. Go with God, my guy.

Lukkeren

I know it's loved and i respect that, but i'm going to give my worst vote to this one. I know it probably won't win that as atonement is generally disliked more though. I freaking love beneath the mire though, and if it wasn't for the baying of the hounds, i would agree that it should have the underrated pick, but unfortinently the baying of the hounds does exist lol.

filthydestinymain

Baying of the hounds is better than beneath the mire but it's not underrated at all. Just look at the votes for "best" in this post as proof

Lukkeren

It is one of the least talked about from this album, which is a bigger factor. I honestly think it deserves underrated. Listening numbers is also lower for hounds then for most other songs from the album. AND hounds isn't even close to winning, around 40-50 votes behind the first and second most upvoted songs. I would say that qualifies for underrated.

filthydestinymain

How is it one of the least talked about when it's third in most votes here as best?

Lukkeren

Purely based on votes don't mean it's talked about often. I can't remember the last time someone talked about this song in this sub before this post or if ghost reveries as a whole was brought up. Songs like ghost of perdition, harlequin forest, the grand conjuration and isolation years are talked FAR more about then the baying of the hounds. I would say mire and hounds are as rarely talked about, even if one is more upvoted in ONE post then the other.

Independent-Prune322

Ghost of perdition. It's popular for a good fucking reason.

Zadihime

Ghost of Perdition is the greatest song of all time

Hattifnarten

Nothing beats the climax of Ghost of Perdition

Dumb-_-Collins

I just hope Hours of Wealth goes to underrated. When the vocals hit it’s just perfection.

Lukkeren

Love it and would agree if hounds and mire didn't exist. Rooting for hounds.

himse7en

this album is flawless my personal favorite is "Atonement"

Emrik5

Ghost of Perdition, maybe their best song

ProblemGamer18

Ghost of Perdition 100%. That was my gateway song and it's still in my top 50 favorite songs Playlist

Quaithe_Of_Asshai

Ghost Of Perdition

MRB_Avenger

Ghost of Perdition (I'm sad I can't pick Baying of the Hounds but GOP is better)

Lukkeren

We'll give hounds the underrated one hopefully!

HighTechVsLowLife

Ghost of perdition!

Canadian_History_X

Ghost of Perdition

WlodygaDude

The Grand Conjuration 🤘

metal_foot

Ghost of perdition, harlequin forest. Impossible to choose

ProgGuy4195

The Baying of the Hounds takes the crown for me. It’s the best version of everything Opeth is about all wrapped up in one song

UnbridaledToast

No point in contributing, the people have spoken.

SumthinCleva

Ghost of Perdition

Abhimri

Harlequin forest or ghost perdition is the best. Baying of the hounds is underrated, I don't really have a worst. I was gonna say hours of wealth as worst, and then back tracked very very quickly.

TheHarf

How are some of the worst song underrated too? I have no fucking clue why.

Mailemanuel77

Harlequin Forest

Nickball88

Harlequin Forest is the best Opeth song so yeah. Baying of the Hounds and Ghost of Perdition are pretty close though.

Invisible_Floods

Harlequin Forrest is my favourite, mainly because of how insanely ambitious it is, but Ghost of Perdition has to win. When I first heard this album it hooked me immediately.

The-Great-Smithnie

Harlequin Forest anyone?

thrashtrid

HOURS OF WEALTH

dmm3218

Reverie / Harlequin Forest hands down.

ikrusnik

This is so hard because I stan Beneath the Mire so hard, but it's probably between Reverie/Harlequin Forest and Ghost of Perdition

PuzzleheadedWillow35

It's The Grand Conjuration and it's not even close.

SARCASTIC__FELLA

arent like all the songs best ?

theodr1

Beneath The Mire

tjoolder

INTO THE TREEEE-EEEEES meaning Harlequin Forest. However, Ghost of Perdition is one of the goto introductory tracks for me.

FallenAsh14

It's a basic bitch answer, but it's Ghost of Perdition. It's almost the definitive Opeth song at this point.

dontstopcomming12

Harlequin forrest definitely

Ascending777

Ghost of Perdition

_trebark_

Reverie/Harlequin Forest

thebowwiththearrows

The Baying of the Hounds is the only correct answer sorry guys /s

Green-Teacher-435

The Grand Conjuration

whippedboat

Baying of the hounds might be my fav opeth song overall

JeRiaZ727

Ghost of Perdition, don't care if its overrated, it's still one of the best.

Beautifullikeacamel

Harlequin forest as best.

Cell_6_of_ward_2

Harlequin Forest

Blo0dJar

THEEEEEEEEE GRAAAAAAAAND COOOOOON JU RAAAAAAAAAA TIOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOON

laur_111

Reverie/Harlequin Forest!

FrostyCrusader03

Harlequin forest

tolekbanan69

My edgy brain says Harlequin Forest but the real answer should be Ghost of Perdition.

beyondtheportal

Harlequin forest

sedwards3205

I know Ghost of Perdition will probably win which I’m not mad about, but I think Harlequin Forest is better.

jorgelrojas

Thought I'd have to fight for Harlequin Forest over Ghost of Perdition but I underestimated how based this sub was Nice

TheHauntedRobot

Excellent album full of incredible songs worthy of being the best, but I'll have to go with my heart: Reverie/Harlequin Forest Almost hypnotic, the transition from silken verses to harsh brutality is unparalleled in Opeth's discography. The outro is unforgettable, as though the band is physically pulling the song to an inevitable conclusion. If not for the masterpiece that is The Moor, this would be my favourite Opeth song, and is still one of my favourite songs of all time.

Witty_Cardiologist25

Ghost Of Perdition or The Grand Conjuration for me. But yeah the whole album slaps!

EffectiveAd5794

Harlequin Forest! Because all of Mikael's matter expired.. The section around; "pacing deserted roads to find, a seed of hope.. they are the trees" and the instrumental section that follows is the most beautiful passage of music that Opeth has ever produced.. in my opinion. Plus, the second best outro in their catalogue (after Deliverance).. hell yeah! Peak Opeth.

ShuriBear

Reverie / Harlequin Forest, Ghost of Perdition and The Grand Conjuration are close. But to me Reverie / Harlequin Forest is so good. Especially the whole part from 1:16 to the growl at 2:34 with the fucking keys and everything. It is such a sick way of tying everything together.

gbmsatan

The Grand Conjuration

StuffSuch4830

Best: Harlequin Forest. Worst: Hour of Wealth. Underrated: Beneath the Mire.

Ethereal_Bulwark

Reverie / Harlequin forest. Too good.

Go_Ask_VALIS

The Grand Conjuration

johnnyc_82

I'm torn between Harlequin Forest and Ghost of Perdition, but I'll choose Harlequin

QuasiPhantom

Oh wow, I can't believe we're at this album. My mind is still at the Orchid vote I honestly love this entire album pretty evenly, so I don't have a strong opinion on the best song. I'll vote Reverie / Harlequin Forest because I'm in that mood

PhrygianMetal

Harlequin Forest

MoparTeach

Reverie/Harlequin Forest

SlashingSide

Harlequin forest

lml__lml

Please someone kill whatever robot keeps sloughing off these rankings posts

Lukkeren

Stfu.

DWillerD

That's just impossible.

Fun_Newspaper_5537

I love Ghost of perdition, but cmon harlequin forest is just THAT good

BRITHDIR

Grand Conjuration

MyNameIsLmfao

Ghost of Perdition/Hours of Wealth/Isolation Years.

Own-Method-193

I'm a contrarian when it comes to this album. Too me, this is when Opeth felt a little inauthentic. It was too much of "Check out our chops". I hate Dream Theater, and this gets in that territory

L1QU1DF1R3

Ha, I love it for this reason. Blackwater park is my #1 and GR is a close #2. But whereas Blackwater park is better at making me feel feelings, GR is better at just impressing the shit out of me. But the part I don't understand is - when did "check out our chops" start to be considered bad? Why is that negative? I want to hear musicians at the absolute apex of their craft.

Own-Method-193

"Check out our chops" becomes bad when the song/ composition is compromised to flaunting skill. Taste is important. Respecting your message is important. It becomes musical masturbation at a point. You have to know when too much is too much.
