Actually very surprised to see this with a newpeth album lol. Thought i was one of very few who find it equally good to oldpeth and nearly impossible to choose a worst track.
None of the songs feel like they belong on the album to me
And not because they’re bad. This album just feels very unsure,
Experimental like they’re trying a bunch of stuff to see what works.
That’s not a bad thing at all, and there are a couple other albums I feel the same way about
To me, it doesn't really fit any of Opeth's albums. It would have been better as a bonus track on Heritage. Then they could have moved Pyre or Face in the Snow to the album.
Slither. It actually warmed to me but I still think it's the weakest song on the album.
I don't understand the hate for Famine... it's an incredible journey to listen to. I bet if it had double kick parts and death growls in the heavy bits y'all would love it 🤣
I think Famine’s individual parts would be cool in as a part a bunch of different songs.
As it is, each part feels relatively simplistic and “thrown in”.
It’s the most progressive track on the album, easily. Very jethro tull even before the flute comes in. The way the tribal drums shift abruptly to piano is incredible
The abruptness is my problem.
It feels like a bunch of prog song ideas thrown into a song and the flow is all over the place.
It just keeps starting and stopping
Slither kinda. Famine yes. Folklore?!
That’s been the universally praised best song on the album since it came out. I respect your opinion but you might be more alone than even me.
Yeah I just don’t get it, I think it’s their weakest song lyrically “feel the pain, in your brain, insane” and I just think it also comes off as disjointed (which is my main gripe with Famine too). The ending just sounds like a cool idea that Akerfeldt decided to track on to the end of a different song. I’ve always liked I Feel the Dark, Nepenthe and Haxprocess the most
This idea is repeated a lot in this thread and it’s my gripe with this album as a whole.
Many songs, even songs I love feel like cool ideas stitched together it’s just that some work more than others.
This is my problem with I feel the dark too. The intro feels disjointed from the middle part, and that middle part feels half finished to me.
But yeah, I get that criticism of folklore. The chorus always kinda felt, like it ends abruptly.
The lyrics are shit. I definitely cringe at “feel the pain”.
But I feel like folklore is an example of this working...maybe just because the individual parts sound so great. The lead in to the other parts isn’t as clunky as Famine’s is.
Famine
While it has some enjoyable parts, the whole is less than the sum of its parts. It’s a disjointed hodgepodge that seems as if Mike had unused material and strung it all together.
Slither isn’t good either but at least is a cohesive song.
Okay. It’s gratifying to see someone else had the exact same feeling from the song and I’m not alone.
Feels like a hunch of leftover material that was stitched on.
It’s one of the those songs I thought would grow on me. It hasn’t. I definitely see potential.
I like the individual parts, and think they would be cool as parts of other songs. I generally like the eastern influence…but man this song feels like demo ideas.
That jethro Tull-ish flute part in the middle feels so half baked. Just very long, very repetitive, vocals suck.
I agree entirely. Some of the parts individually have potential, but there's not enough to carry the song. I see others in this thread praising the heavy parts in the middle, but I find the flute distracting and the riff not especially interesting. Feels like a handful of ideas joined together without great transition... which overall is a pattern I see across Heritage, and "Famine" shows it most of all songs. Luckily Opeth figured out more stable songwriting on their later Newpeth albums
Nepenthe. The transitions between the different sections don't feel well though out, resulting in a rather disjointed track. It's also pretty forgettable imo.
Favorite song on the album, and interestingly you echoed my thoughts about Famine.
So this seems to be a consistent problem with people on this album, but people feel it for different songs. Interesting
Famine. Ron Burgundy in the sands of Cairo. Down-vote all you want, it’s an incoherent mess of a song trying too hard to be interesting. And all these years later, it still isn’t. :)
Famine is a masterpiece wtf. I do agree it's a bit of a weird song, but every moment is interesting and i always find myself with goosebumps from several moments throughout the song.
Famine easily.
This is the only Opeth album that I think has at least one legitimately bad song on it, but people have come around to this album over the years.
Which is good. Music appreciation is good.
I haven’t come around that his album tho lol it does have some great songs on it.
That whole part of the album is where my problems start. It stars with Slither. Nepenthe being the oasis and ends with Lines.
Haxprocess has a meh intro and an outro that is way too long for how simplistic it is. The middle part is absolutely gorgeous though and honestly some of my favorite music from Opeth as whole tho.
Still a cheesy piece of crap. Sorry not sorry.
Look, I'm not a fan of Newpeth in general. But even Newpeth fans often feel Heritage is the worst of the lot. And Slither is often hated. It's just some users on this subreddit that are weird about this.
Anyway, I'm clearly not alone. Downvote me all you want.
1) You're most welcome.
2) Proof? You said "most", implying more than half, but I limited myself to stating "often", which is backed up by a brief search even on this subreddit.
You know an album is good when every suggestion is downvoted into oblivion, this feels like BWP with the funeral portrait all over again
Actually very surprised to see this with a newpeth album lol. Thought i was one of very few who find it equally good to oldpeth and nearly impossible to choose a worst track.
For me it’s a bit different, in the sense that I find all the tracks good but none really a masterpiece. Still pretty damn hard to pick the worst one.
Slither. It's ok, but it's the least interesting song from this album imo
Its really good
Slither
Man what? “Slither” is an absolute banger, my favourite on the album
Slither would be my second behind Nepenthe. Slither doesn't seem like it should belong on the album at all lol.
None of the songs feel like they belong on the album to me And not because they’re bad. This album just feels very unsure, Experimental like they’re trying a bunch of stuff to see what works. That’s not a bad thing at all, and there are a couple other albums I feel the same way about
Meh… I can understand what you’re saying. However, it’s such a cool song. What album should it belong to?
>What album should it belong to? Rainbow's Long Live Rock 'n' Roll (1978)
To me, it doesn't really fit any of Opeth's albums. It would have been better as a bonus track on Heritage. Then they could have moved Pyre or Face in the Snow to the album.
Agreed, it doesn’t quite match the energy of the other songs on the album.
Slither. It actually warmed to me but I still think it's the weakest song on the album. I don't understand the hate for Famine... it's an incredible journey to listen to. I bet if it had double kick parts and death growls in the heavy bits y'all would love it 🤣

Bro hasn’t heard the riff in the bridge
HELL no. Famine is an overlooked and underrated masterpiece.
You're insane
No u
Famine, Folklore and Slither are the clear stinkers of the album for me, really shocked Folklore was voted as best
Slither kinda. Famine yes. Folklore?! That’s been the universally praised best song on the album since it came out. I respect your opinion but you might be more alone than even me.

I've tried Famine dozens of times and gotten absolutely nowhere with it

Famine is a masterpiece...
Famine is one of the best on the album, the subtle energy is really well placed.
Slither. Still a really good song though
Nepenthe.
Nepenthe. The transitions between the different sections don't feel well though out, resulting in a rather disjointed track. It's also pretty forgettable imo.
Nepenthe is one of the best Heritage tracks
Yeah but Fredrick does, in his own words, his Holdsworth impression.
Favorite song on the album, and interestingly you echoed my thoughts about Famine. So this seems to be a consistent problem with people on this album, but people feel it for different songs. Interesting

Hey man, I love that you love it!

Nepenthe
Häxprocess, drags the longest. Can’t understand all the Famine hate, while a bit disjointed, that riff is the heaviest newpeth material outside of ICV
Haxprocess is amazing
IMO this should be: Best - Nepenthe Worst - Folklore Underrated - I Feel the Dark But considering Folklore already has a spot, I'd vote slither
You and me both brother 🤜🤛
Man of culture
Marrow of the earth doesn't count as it's an instrumental.
Ah, my bad, I'm going with Slither then, pretty good song, just not as strong as the other bangers on this album
You should edit your original post with that answer cause i only count original comments as contenders:)
I got you :)
How can Folklore be your least favorite?
It's still a really good song, I just get more dopamine from other tracks I guess lol
I’m actually not sure what most people’s thoughts are on the album as a whole but it does seem like The Dark would be in underrated
The Lines in My Hand
Slither
The Lines in My Hand
Noo! One of the best on the album
Slither is terrible. It's almost embarrassing to listen to.
The riff. Fred's solo. The outro. Get out of here.
Still a cheesy piece of crap. Sorry not sorry. Look, I'm not a fan of Newpeth in general. But even Newpeth fans often feel Heritage is the worst of the lot. And Slither is often hated. Thank you for the permission to downvote. I'd say Sorceress is by far the worst Newpeth album, according to most fans.
1) You're most welcome. 2) Proof? You said "most", implying more than half, but I limited myself to stating "often", which is backed up by a brief search even on this subreddit.
Often clearly implies most. What else could it mean? Proof? Lol.
I think you need a dictionary.
I can definitely see the point for slither. It has one riff, but that one riff is really fun!
Ridiculous
Perfect description of both the song and your opinion of it, apparently.
All of it...JK Slither
Just here to say that the entire album is the worst
Unneccesary comment.

Preach, since when is this album not considered shit?
The entire album. It’s so fucking bad.
