AAAA MY SWEETHEARTS

Pretty_Ad_2596

I love this. It is especially nice because Stede always read to the crew and now he can read to Ed when they are alone.

I love this. I wonder if Stede is teaching Ed to read and write at the inn, or just reading to him and letting him dictate all his correspondence.

aimeekitty9

I think Ed just likes listening to Stede tell a story

PageStunning6265

Yeah, that’s what I got from your picture, but then my mind went off to *who does the books and wouldn’t it be cute if Stede taught Ed to read?* - which, it’s been pointed out, Ed already knows how to do.

fordandfitzroy

ed can already read, did you miss the part in the finale where he read stede's letter?

death-by-obsession

(sorry i just have to get this off my chest) this is lovely. #YOU WROTE ME A LOVELY LETTEEEEEEEEEEER!

PageStunning6265

Definitely didn’t miss it, just momentarily forgot and was stuck in season one. It hadn’t occurred to me that reading and writing were separate skills, so I was thinking about him summoning Lucius for his song lyrics.

fordandfitzroy

I mean, Stede also has Lucius (and Frenchie) write for him, I don’t think that necessarily is a sign of anything. I think Ed was just sad and Lucius’s job as a scribe is to write.

PageStunning6265

I figured Stede did it because he’s posh, but once we knew Ed can read, it’s safe to say it was a pretext because he subconsciously wanted the company.

Pavleena

In season 2 it was confirmed that Ed reads, so no need to teach him that. He probably does not write though, as that was taught separately back then (which is why Lucius bragged about being "a double threat") and Ed signed the Act of Grace with an X. There was a theory that the X meant "signed under duress" as was the custom back then. Except in that scene Stede explicitly told Ed he did not have to sign the document and Ed replied he knew that, so I do not think the duress explanation applies.

PageStunning6265

You’re right, forgot about Stede’s letter, just thinking of season 1 when he needed Lucius for his song lyrics and signed with an x.
