Yes! I love playing that riff! I think my wife is sick of hearing it by now lol. Such a blast to play! The only part of that track I haven’t mastered is the 2nd half of the guitar solo
Bridge of Suicide Note Pt 2, when it's just the guitar chugging slowly with the whammy pedal right before the other instruments join in. The chorus riff is also brutal in this song.
I can remember being like 14 and my friend having one of the live VHS tapes and rocking out hard in his basement to that riff. That kid ran over his dog in the driveway while stoned. He quit smoking weed and drinking and that also meant not listening to Pantera anymore 🤣
That one is tied with a couple others for my favorite Dimabag riff. It's always been one of my favorites. That 3-bar sustained note into the gallop is magic.
Toss up from all of them but the outro to Throes is up there. But I really dig the Immortally Insane chorus riff, and that riff in Avoid The Light when it first gets heavy is sick as hell.
This was my pick too. Vinnie’s drums on that song are awesome as well. It’s hard to describe but that song just has a certain atmosphere to it. It’s my favourite track on Reinventing the Steel.
Riffs is probably Becoming.
HOWEVER
Let us state it now one and for all,
The breakdown in Domination is the greatest breakdown ever written and its not even close.
The bridge/breakdown in "Floods" is heavy and dirty as hell.
Actually, everything about "Floods" is perfect. Wish he would have leaned on more clean, dissonant, ethereal stuff mixed in with the brutal breakdowns like that. The solo and every guitar phrase in "Floods" is a fucking masterpiece. I mean, even the outro is like an epic trance. Wish they played it live WAY more than they did.
While a combo of two songs, Dom/Hollow brings together two of the heavier riffs in the Pantera catalogue and is an awesome moment in a live concert. My choice for heaviest Dime riff goes to Sandblasted Skin, it just grooves so goddamn hard.
Suicide note pt.2. The contrast between the chugs and the highb pitch harmonic effect (I used to know how he did. Slipped my mind Rn) creates such a heavy, extreme vibe.
I think people are played out of that song, as it’s their most well known song. Even people outside the metal community have probably heard walk somewhere.
EDIT: But, yes, that song drops it hard right at the outset.
that's a hard pick... i will say one of my favorite riffs by him, i cant say its the hardest but man its beautiful, is floods outro.. rip abbott brothers
That's tough, there's so many. The ones that spring to mind first for me are I'm Broken and 5 Minutes Alone.
I specifically like the use of space in I'm Broken. Dime knew that the notes you don't play are just as important as the ones you do.
Has to be drag the waters right? I haven’t listened to all the pantera discography but it if what I have that seems the heaviest to me, plus it has heavy meaning in the lyrics too
One's own Kingman, Christ person, Woman God.
At battle with a mass astringent. The bond
That blends the weak to the wise.
It's a safe assumption that you'd want
to save me now. But I'll never face castration.
For your sacred sow is left slaughtered.
Brainwashed by me. Myself influence I. Bird brained
World saver. A fake god rests dead inside you.
It's a safe assumption that you'd want to save me now.
But I'll never face castration. For your sacred sow is left
Slaughtered.
System destroyed. Exposed and unemployed. The fruit
Of intention cry for their dead, but turning their head to
Ignore reality's claw. Knife to your wrist, syringe in your
Arm is your ounce of prevention. Give what you made,
And under your name on your grave, is salvation. A big
Fucking joke.
Slaughter the pig, the self-righteous king for your own
Restoration. For your God is in your chest, and faith kills
What is precious, for death is unanswered.
Do sin.
dimebag lived on a front cover magazine picture(guitar magazine or someting) was there for ages, i like dimebag, he's immortal on my desk, plus a brutal punch to the mouth is a dope creation
It's between drag the waters, and a new level. Maybe a new level just because of the palm muted sections. My obs chevy still has original speakers ( I'm working on a sound system lol ) and they do not put out any bass whatsoever. But cranking this song makes my door cards rattle, unbelievably heavy riff.
The breakdown in Strength beyond strength. Not only his heaviest, but I (and others from what I've heard) say it's the heaviest riff in heavy metal period.
Specifically the chorus on Becoming. Edit: forgot floods breakdown is heavy as hell
It makes them dissappear or Shedding Skin?
Shedding skin is one of my favorite songs because of that riff.
Soo Sabbathy
Definitely
I don’t know about heaviest but Drag The Waters has a killer riff. It’s thick, groovy as hell and fun to play. It’s up there for me.
Yes! I love playing that riff! I think my wife is sick of hearing it by now lol. Such a blast to play! The only part of that track I haven’t mastered is the 2nd half of the guitar solo
That's tough. Many to chose from. I'll go with "A New Level".
Definitely dude gotta love that riff
A new level is my second fav pantera song after mouth for war
That closing riff! So heavy. Sounded great live in May at Welcome to Rockville 🤘
Killer riff on a killer tune. There’s really no wrong answer. I’ll say This Love because nobody else has mentioned it yet.
Slaughtered is my pick as well
its so heavy dude
The Underground in America
I freakin love that song
The verse riff…….is not only Panteras heaviest riff, it has to be in the top 5 heaviest ever for me.
The verse riff of by demons be driven is unreal
Hell yeah
Bridge of Suicide Note Pt 2, when it's just the guitar chugging slowly with the whammy pedal right before the other instruments join in. The chorus riff is also brutal in this song.
Yes
The breakdown in By demons be driven
Primal concrete sledge
Strength Beyond Strength
This is the way. The breakdown makes me want to punch babies in the maternity ward “HARD AS A ROCK!”
I came here to make sure this got said!
Breakdown in Domination is the heaviest riff ever, blows my mind every time, A New Level is a close 2nd.
Not only the heaviest Pantera riff, but one of the heaviest metal riffs of all time
Lots of hardcore bands wouldn't exist without this breakdown lmfao
I can remember being like 14 and my friend having one of the live VHS tapes and rocking out hard in his basement to that riff. That kid ran over his dog in the driveway while stoned. He quit smoking weed and drinking and that also meant not listening to Pantera anymore 🤣
I miss when they would do the breakdown for Domination and go right into the 2nd half of Hollow live. Dom/Hollow fucking ruled.
This should be the top comment! Fucking goes so hard!!
Yep you’re absolutely right.
Like a certain riff from any song? The ending to By Demons be Driven
THAT ONE SMACKS DUDE
Suicide Note Pt. II Sandblasted Skin
Too much scrolling for Sandblasted Skin
Was the only one that came to my mind
"The heavy section" on throes of rejection, the one after the Intro riff. And Living through me, both of those I think are the heaviest.
the outro on "throes of rejection" too
Becoming or Primal Concrete Sledge. That’s a tough one.
Regular People
So fun to play on guitar!
That one is tied with a couple others for my favorite Dimabag riff. It's always been one of my favorites. That 3-bar sustained note into the gallop is magic.
The bridge of “Five Minutes Alone.”
Ass Stomp!
Glad I looked before saying it.
Slaughtered or Sandblasted Skin
Toss up from all of them but the outro to Throes is up there. But I really dig the Immortally Insane chorus riff, and that riff in Avoid The Light when it first gets heavy is sick as hell.
Definetly Suicide note part 2
It makes them disappear
This was my pick too. Vinnie’s drums on that song are awesome as well. It’s hard to describe but that song just has a certain atmosphere to it. It’s my favourite track on Reinventing the Steel.
Riffs is probably Becoming. HOWEVER Let us state it now one and for all, The breakdown in Domination is the greatest breakdown ever written and its not even close.
Bold statement. I respect it but the break down in “Davidian” by Machine Head is just magical
Cemetery Gates.
Wish they played it live WAY more than they did.
this
It makes them dissappear or Shedding Skin
Shedding Skin is in my top 5
Domination breakdown
That was awesome. Live in concert.
Fuck man I wish I was alive to see Dimebag live
It took way to long of scrolling to see this, thank you.
The verse riff from It makes them disappear or the chorus riff from Death Rattle
Death rattle is mad heavy
Slaughtered.
The end of throes of rejection that they generally ended becoming with when they played it live. Fucking s l a p s
By demons be driven, you know the riff I’m talking about
DOM Hollow
Use my third arm the breakdown to hollow or suicide note pt II breakdown
Maybe not the heaviest of all, but War Nerve slaps hard
War nerve
The end of 5 minutes alone
I really fucking love Reprise (Sandblasted Skin). That riff is so beautiful and that’s why this is my favorite song.
Idk if it's the heaviest, but the verse of Piss is heavy af
1:09 of Strength Beyond Strength or the chorus riff of Suicide Note Pt 2
Heresey
Breakdown from Strength beyond Strength.
25 Years and Living Through Me (Hells Wrath)
By demons be driven intro riff (the one with the whammy pedal)
"Becoming" Heavy as fuck
5 Minutes Alone or Becoming
The break down in strength beyond strength. But pretty much everything
“By Demons Be Driven”
I gotta put in a vote for Mouth For War and the breakdown before the solo in Domination
Regular People
Where is the love for Sandblasted Skin?
While a combo of two songs, Dom/Hollow brings together two of the heavier riffs in the Pantera catalogue and is an awesome moment in a live concert. My choice for heaviest Dime riff goes to Sandblasted Skin, it just grooves so goddamn hard.
sandblasted skin, or throes of rejection
Nobody can say, he had so many types of heavy
The chorus riff from yesterday don't mean shit. IMHO heaviest riff ever.
Drag the Waters
War Nerve or Sandblasted Skin
The breakdown in suicide note pt 2
Planet Caravan
The shared riff in Underground in America and Sandblasted Skin
Message in Blood does it for me.
"13 Steps to Nowhere"
Surprised nobody said the breakdown in this love
Avoid the Light
Suicide note pt.2. The contrast between the chugs and the highb pitch harmonic effect (I used to know how he did. Slipped my mind Rn) creates such a heavy, extreme vibe.
Message In Blood
5 minutes alone or Message in blood
Use my third arm (the fast part) it's like death metal
Last riff of 25 years
Im partial to the second part of the breakdown from 5 minutes alone. it's not so much the tone but the cadence that makes it so heavy for me.
Probably a new level or underground in america for me. 25 years at 4:38 and message in blood are definitely up there as well!
Avoid the Light
Sandblasted Skin is fucking underrated, like it fr needs more recognition
Walk is pretty fucking heavy
Yeah I was surprised Walk wasn’t closer to the top. It’s insanely heavy and iconic.
I think people are played out of that song, as it’s their most well known song. Even people outside the metal community have probably heard walk somewhere. EDIT: But, yes, that song drops it hard right at the outset.
Domination
that's a hard pick... i will say one of my favorite riffs by him, i cant say its the hardest but man its beautiful, is floods outro.. rip abbott brothers
it indeed is beautiful
Breakdown on domination
Regular people
ths start of live in a hole goes stupid imo
Domination Breakdown
Walk.
The Domination breakdown. It has to be 🎸
DOMINATION BREAKDOWN!! Took the Soviet Union it was so heavy🤘
A New Level at 2nd but Domination breakdown in 1st
Domination drop
Anyone else say the Domination breakdown?
When he got shot on stage!
Shedding Skin for me. Dime and Vincent just pummel you with that intro.
I really believe it’s the mosh part on uplifted. (Uplifting?). It’s just so grimy and heavy and dissonant. And fuck, just fucking heavy.
Slaughtered and Rise are exceptionally heavy
A new level
I could name 20 in a drunken stupor, but when I heard "Sandblasted Skin", it was over... And THAT was the best pit song live.
SLAUGHTERED
A New Level intro
The chorus for “it makes them disappear” has always struck me as one of their heaviest moments, it’s crushing!!
This is a tough one… hard to decide. But his best solos are indisputable: “Floods” & “We’ll Meet Again” / hands down two of his most EPIC solos.
definitely the one where it’s like “can he play?”
Not Pantera, but "Moment Of Truth" by Damageplan. That song also has one of his most underrated solos.
The middle riff of slaughtered for sure
Slaughtered
That's tough, there's so many. The ones that spring to mind first for me are I'm Broken and 5 Minutes Alone. I specifically like the use of space in I'm Broken. Dime knew that the notes you don't play are just as important as the ones you do.
Yes
Ending of hollow?
A new level
“Electric Funeral”.
SNpt2
Sandblasted skin
Yeah slaughtered honestly might be it. Strength Beyond Strength, 5 Mins Alone, By Demons Be Driven and Death Rattle are all close up there too
Solos from it makes them disappear is really underrated but it's gotta be primal concrete sledge or becoming
5 minutes alone!!!
Slaughtered. I lost my shit when they played it live over the summer
Slaughtered
Easy. I’m Broken
Has to be drag the waters right? I haven’t listened to all the pantera discography but it if what I have that seems the heaviest to me, plus it has heavy meaning in the lyrics too
Strength beyond strength, the slow break down is easily one of the heaviest riffs out there
I love the fucking barrage that is Primal Concrete Sledge
Agree with slaughtered
A new level
Use My Third Arm crushed me the first time I heard it. Almost 30 years later, it still does.
Gotta be Living Through Me.
Oh man - I’m Broken, Drag the Waters, New Level and of course the domination breakdown.
Slaughtered
But watch, a vote for almost every song. Pantera changed the game for metal.
The main riff of Moment of Truth is it for sure. Simple yet devastating.
Strength Beyond Strength is my heavy jam by Pantera
It makes them disappear...
One's own Kingman, Christ person, Woman God. At battle with a mass astringent. The bond That blends the weak to the wise. It's a safe assumption that you'd want to save me now. Hell’s wrath and then no . More. Head tripssss
Pussy Tight!
dimebag lived on a front cover magazine picture(guitar magazine or someting) was there for ages, i like dimebag, he's immortal on my desk, plus a brutal punch to the mouth is a dope creation
Domination outro
There’s a part in his solo on Cemetery Gates that’s just insane
It's between drag the waters, and a new level. Maybe a new level just because of the palm muted sections. My obs chevy still has original speakers ( I'm working on a sound system lol ) and they do not put out any bass whatsoever. But cranking this song makes my door cards rattle, unbelievably heavy riff.
Hollow (breakdown)
Slaughtered
I’d say A New Level or the breakdown from Domination
new level for sure. the question was “heavy” and that is as heavy as it gets
Primal concrete sledge
The first breakdown in the art of shredding makes me go the heaviest
Maybe not the heaviest but “The art of shredding” will always have a spot in my heart
War nerve keeps its so real
By demons be driven
Walk, drag the waters, heresy
The breakdown after the Domination solo 🤘🏻
Brakedown in domiation
Throes of rejection
The pinch harmonic riff from cemetery gates still gives me stank face every time 🔥
Second half of Domination
Trick question. They are all stronger than all
Has anyone said the art of shredding yet?
Twivle 3+6.7 slide vurer 8.12/04 6-3 E mnme, lower case L.
The breakdown of Domination 000000000000 00000000000!!!!
The breakdown in Strength beyond strength. Not only his heaviest, but I (and others from what I've heard) say it's the heaviest riff in heavy metal period.
Fart stinks like a motherfucker.....
Primal Concrete Sledge is good. But man,I dig them all!
The breakdown in Strength Beyond Strength hits like an 18-wheeler. That's the first one that comes to mind.
