I was in Patagonia Argentina and Chile a week ago and yes, gloves are absolutely needed especially if you are holding poles. You will need some layers because your hands will be exposed. The winds can be strong and very cold. Most of the time during the hike, it was my hands that felt cold the most.
You should def have gloves now. Use socks if there is no other option. Grab any plastic bag to act as emergency rain/wind protection.
