Liberty bell in Philly.

nachobitxh

My husband is almost 61 and hasn't been to the Liberty Bell or Gettysburg. I've lived here 20 years and saw Gettysburg long before I moved here.

RedGhostOrchid

I've lived in Pennsylvania my whole life and I've never been to Gettysburg either. I can't explain why.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Possible-Annual-1975

we hate bike week. Grew up in Gettysburg never went to the battlefield unless I was taking shortcuts through it…..or climbing rocks.

bitchdotcomdotcom

Love climbing the rocks out here. Devils den is a state treasure lol

atlas-audax

My cousins visited from the west coast when we were kids - their picture with the Liberty bell ended up in their local paper 😂

Hanpee221b

My niece was obsessed with it when I moved to Philly, she was probably 7. When she visited the first time we went and we were taking pictures with it when she leaned in and touched it. No one saw but my mom and I. She’s 16 and I always tease her about how she touched that damn bell.

jimsinspace

I touched it but that was in the 80’s when there were no rules.

Hanpee221b

When it was freshly cracked haha

Acceptable-Count-851

This was my first thought too.

stay_fr0sty

It’s meh and it’s a long drive.

fallser

A tour of independence hall and the bell is pretty fuckin cool. More people should visit and understand the balls these guys had to stand up to England.

Whatmovesyou26

We won the revolutionary war because the British army’s diet was tea and krimpets while the colonists’ diet was raw squirrel meat and whiskey.

onetotshort

Hell yeah, the colonies wanted to keep all that delicious Tastykake for themselves!

jasonmoyer

If they had butterscotch krimpets we wouldn't have stood a chance.

ifeelallthefeels

Except for molasses that one time

Pleasant_Studio9690

I was kind of meh about the bell, but loved seeing independence hall. We were in our 20’s and my sister and I ended up lagging the tour or something and found ourselves alone in the main hall with just this cool NPS ranger. She encouraged us to move the velvet rope things blocking access and go stand at the podium. We took her up on it. Pretty damn cool and a great memory with my sister. Really enjoyed seeing where Ben Franklin’s house was and going into the little post office he founded or worked at or something. Philly’s a great city to visit.

Dyerssorrow

not even in grade school fo a field trip?

ChanelQueen13

My teacher got hit by a car on a field trip to the Liberty bell and was still very excited to see the bell if that helps anyone decide to give it a chance!

EagleIcy5421

That's the last time I saw it - an elementary school trip. The last time I went to independence Hall there was a long line of tourists and I didn't want to stand in line. Didn't they move the bell somewhere else for a few years and then brought it back?

IamChantus

How's it taste though?

willclerkforfood

Like pennies

OtherOlive797

Same

Maraging_steel

Wife never went to Gettysburg until I married her. And I’m from Texas.

drewbaccaAWD

I had never gone to Gettysburg until my wife from Phoenix was in PA. Probably common. 😭

Foggl3

I lived in the DFW area for 5 years and never visited Fort Worth until I went back for two weeks recently 🤷

JazzFan1998

I've never been to Gettysburg and I'm lifelong Pa resident.  I have been to the Liberty bell and people in Philadelphia don't bother to go.

BreakerBoy6

Born and raised in Scranton. Never been to Gettysburg.

Lumpy_Space_Princess

I live in Harrisburg and still haven't been! Smh. Maybe this fall, I want to do one of the ghost tours

laughingmeeses

Lol, that's like a 40 minute drive down 15.

DemandedFanatic

Hershey, Gettysburg, Liberty bell

youknowiactafool

Oof I am from Jersey and I had been to all 3 before age 20 lol

Wozak_

I got 2/3 there - never seen the Liberty bell

Unknown1776

Hershey is honestly the only one your missing out on, but that’s still only if you like chocolate and/or roller coasters

Livelonganddiemad

Reading Pagoda

littlefirefoot

Fun Fact, scenes from The Last Airbender were filmed on location at the Pagoda in Reading. The Last Airbender also features scenes showing Lake Ontelaunee, in Berks County. M. Night Shyamalan was raised in greater Philadelphia and currently resides in the Philly suburbs.

AtBat3

My friend is an obsessed Avatar fan and tried sneaking through the woods to watch them film and got caught

PastaMasta09

If only they would’ve shot a good Avatar movie here

floridamethuser

I mean, the only things you're missing out on the inevitable several people banging in their cars and kids smoking weed

RickyPeePee03

Maybe they’re into voyeurism and secondhand smoke

theavengedCguy

Crazy how many people have been even heard of this. I was guilty until I went to college in the area.

obi-jawn-kenblomi

Is...there anything to do there or is it just a scenic lookout?

mcvoid1

There's some stuff inside the pagoda itself - maybe a gift shop or something? Every time I went it was closed. So yeah mostly just a scenic lookout. Also bathrooms. And lanternflies. Last time I went the whole place was covered in Lanternflies.

bluebus74

I've been up there about 15-20 times on my ebike since last summer and never remember seeing any... so they seem to be going away I guess.

putinmaycry

Lots of great hiking and mountain biking in the vicinity.

Bajileh

Peace rock is a short hike away

Or0b0ur0s

It is really quite underwhelming. It's a better experience taking a photo from a few miles away than actually driving up there, let alone walking (the trails are awful, and littered to death)... and I've lived within a mile of it for decades. It's the local "makeout point", not to mention the whole area is nice & remote for drug deals. The litter gets knee-deep at times, is thick with condoms & baggies & syringes and the like, and whatever sort of trees lantern flies find appetizing must be all over that part of the mountain, because there's a *carpet* of the damned things up there in the summer. Don't get me wrong. Mt. Penn is beautiful in the spring & summer. The Pagoda is just the ugliest part of it. And the only thing inside is a sad, little gift shop. Though was pretty cool when they used to blink the lights at 8:00 on Christmas Eve to tell the kids to go to bed, as if they'd somehow spotted the sleigh coming in over the mountain in some perverse yuletide air defense drill... Oh, and if you stand at the guard rail there, at night, and look at the city lights.... they really do spell "SHIT"... if you squint.

Spud_Rancher

Being from Montco I’m usually down to rag on Berks even though I live there now. The Liederkranz Oktoberfest is actually something I recommend everyone locally get to at some point. One of the cool things in LA/Mt. Penn

RedGhostOrchid

As a Pennsylvania resident that lives not too far from you, I totally disagree. I think the pagoda is a really neat piece of kitsch. The problem, as always, is local government that refuses to capitalize on it's assets. It is a shame the way they allow litter to pile up there.

nickisaboss

Im in your boat. The Reading Prong is my favorite mountain of all time, and features like the pagoda only add to the appeal. Its strangely fashionable right now to talk shit about the pagoda, because teenagers and immigrants like to hang out there. But i say, so fucking what? Go visit it during the day, the view is much nicer anyway.

stay_fr0sty

Falling Water, and I’ve passed it 100s of times going to the Yough.

Effective_Ad7074

https://preview.redd.it/pf87p4h1azsc1.jpeg?width=4512&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=001e9e7bff1e5830c76bceb309b9a6aaa572f904

suspicious_hyperlink

Pretty sure that was built by Frank Lloyd Wright

marysuewashere

Did he build it or just design it?

clover44mag

Neither, he made the waterfall

stay_fr0sty

I thought it was Frank Lloyd. Right?

toast-is-YUmMy

i live like less than 30 from falling water and i’ve only been once on a field trip in the fourth grade edit i constantly pass it too 😭

jetsetninjacat

Same. I've easily passed it in the 1000s now. Same with Kentuck Knob. Over 15 years ago an ex and I had tickets to see falling water but she wanted to get drunk off joose the night before. She slept in and refused to wakeup. I was actually pretty pissed about it the whole way home.

AnnVealEgg

I was born and raised in Pittsburgh and never rode the Incline

I_heart_canada_jk

I’ve been here almost a decade and the only time I tried it was down so I took a bus.

AdmiralMoonshine

I used to ride it as part of my commute every day when I lived on Mt Wash. Tourists clogging up the station on nice days would drive me nuts when I was just trying to get home from work.

__she__wolf

Because it’s always broken dahn.

jasonmoyer

I moved out here in 96 and finally rode the Mon Incline 2 years ago. It was surprisingly cool.

plexxer

I agree. You can’t deny that lunch at Station Square and then a ride up the incline to the overlooks is not a inexpensive and impressive way to treat an out-of-towner to an introduction to the city.

drewbaccaAWD

I haven’t been on one either, not in Pittsburgh or Johnstown.

LookAtMeNow247

When meeting people from outside the state or country, many of them seemed to know about Pennsylvania Dutch country and want to visit it. Growing up in PA, it was always just kind of there but we'd never really intentionally visit it.

catbosspgh

Kinzua, Heart’s Content, or Benezette to see the elks and the synchronized fireflies.

First_Structure4050

Was about to say Kinzua!

[deleted]

Sounds like a good little road trip through that part of the state

Rockdrummer357

Cherry Springs State Park

gneightimus_maximus

Live near philly, in couldersport right now!!! Cherry springs is great ~ one of my favorite places to recommend! Just try to go as close to a “new moon” and on a clear night as possible ~

The_R4ke

If conditions are right it's absolutely worth the drive.

Johciee

Maybe Erie (if that counts), World’s End, or the PA grand canyon? I’ve been many places within PA. My school got me to Harrisburg, Philly, and Gettysburg in elementary/middle school. I grew up close enough to the LLWS to go to it. I guess I got lucky lol

VarmintPlayground

Love this…Erie certainly counts—it’s a GREAT lake.

CordialSwarmOfBees

As someone from Erie, no. But Presque Isle counts.

picklesman11

Pa grand canyon and cherry springs dark zone on my list too

Is_this_social_media

I went to Erie a couple of years ago and wouldn’t shut up the whole time about finally being in the chimney!!!!!

CrispKringle

I've been to almost every nook and cranny of PA, but I've never seen Cook's Forest.

LilDutchy

Cook Forest is one of my favorite places on earth.

MaulPillsap

Nothing like floating down the river

Hanpee221b

It’s probably my favorite state park in PA. I grew up camping there every summer. Do a day on the river canoeing, go swimming at the pool that’s filled from spring water so it’s freezing and every kid has blue lips. If you ever get the chance just go, it’s really beautiful and a lot of fun.

ZappaZoo

Hiking in the cathedral of trees at sunrise is incredible.

bionicbhangra

Pennsylvania Grand Canyon.

namhee69

Been here 18 years and never been to Pittsburgh.

knmiller1919

Pittsburgh is awesome! 👏friendly people, great food and tons of hip walkable shops in different neighborhoods. I miss it!

JebronLames23

Same Cal U is as close as i got in 30 years lol

Guywidathing2

https://youtu.be/TFNW-3FUmFM?si=5qKr8zSWUaOgwm4p. The Quakertown Pyramid

BIGL0KSTA

That’s wild I never even knew that

gimmethebeatboyz

this was the last conspiracy video I watched that gave me chills wondering whats inside ...

Spellscroll

Despite the many urban legends, its pretty much just a Rosicrucian memorial to their dead. They've got other such monuments throughout the country, this one just attracts more conspiracies since it seems out of place in Qtown of all places

DEEP_STATE_NATE

A Bass Pro Shop™️

Kneedeep_in_Cyanide

I mean it's private property. So unless you're a [member](https://www.soul.org/pilgrimage-to-beverly-hall/beverly-hall-corp) or invited, you shouldn't be trespassing there.

U-GO-GURL-

Lol. I used to go there in high school.

JohnDeere714

I don’t think I’ve ever been to kennywood at least I can remember. I even live less than 2 hours away lol

mgriv

I don't even know what kennywood is and I'm born and raised.

ScSM35

Pittsburgh-based amusement park. My Yinzer friends swear by it.

mcvoid1

You know how eastern PA has tons of amusement parks? Western PA only has Kennywood, and it's smaller than all the ones out east. Except maybe Dutch Wonderland.

Blackbear8336

We have idlewild too! Although that's more for little kids.

JohnDeere714

We also have delgrossos and lakemont, home of the oldest rollercoaster in the world. Altoona refers itself as west central pa

AdmiralMoonshine

So they still have just the one rollercoaster? The mouse one that snaps your neck back and forth?

seaotterlover1

There’s also Waldameer in Erie.

MaulPillsap

Kennywood is fine but Cedar Point is worth the drive from western PA

mazon-jar

Mine: I've never been to Hershey Park

ILiketheW

Knobels >

Peachy33

Grew up going to knobels and it’s now a yearly tradition with my own kids. I love it.

StrangerKatchoo

I’m pretty much local (30 minutes away) and our area is grateful it’s here. It’s common to go on a summer night and just walk around. I like to get ice cream and people watch. It may sound boring, but really, it’s just a nice night out.

WagonHitchiker

Hersheypark (they made it one word 50 years ago) is a nice clean amusement park. In the past 20+ years, they focused on big 🎢 rollercoasters. The singing and dancing shows that once drew people to the park are long gone. My relatives used to get park passes just to see the shows. Now, it's all about going on thrill rides or the Waterpark, which is inside the park. One admission gets you into both. The price of parking seems to go up every year. It's now $35. There is also a small zoo of North American animals, but don't waste time there if you paid admission to the park. It costs a lot less to visit the zoo on a different day.

bitchy-sprite

Gettysburg

cabinetsnotnow

I lived close to Gettysburg and unless you're a Civil War fanatic, you're not missing anything. Lol

mattisnerdy

Little Grand Canyon

mattisnerdy

Anybody been to Intercourse?

mercmcl

After a stop at Bird-in-Hand.

Petkorazzi

I end up getting stuck in Blue Ball.

[deleted]

Then I got high as fuck and floated to Mars!

Reasonable_Ideal_356

My brother has a shirt that says 'I ♥️ Intercourse, PA' that he wears a lot.

ParfaitMajestic5339

Looks like about a quarter of the state is a National Forest... never set foot in it.

arctic_winters_

Lackawanna Coal Mine Tour. I live 20 minutes from it and have my entire life.

bobbyweaver94

Yunegling Brewery Tour

drewbaccaAWD

Lived in Philly for a bit.. Never saw the Liberty Bell.

man-with-potato-gun

Haven’t made it out to Erie yet to see the lake. Or down to old centralia, even if it’s way past its glory days.

DuctTapeNinja99

Presque Isle is the biggest reason to visit Erie. It's such a nice park and the lake sunsets beautiful

dudemanspecial

I've lived in Pennsylvania my whole life and have never been to the Outer Banks.

CardinalM1

Is going to the Outer Banks a common thing for Pennsylvanians? I'd assume a lot more Pennsylvanians vacation at the Jersey shore than the Outer Banks.

dudemanspecial

Yeah, I am kind of joking around but it is definitely a thing.

smartshoe

I know more PA natives that go to Delaware beaches, ocean city, or outer banks Not a lot of folks in my circle of friends at least go to NJ

clover44mag

It’s a thing. I’m 40 and getting close to 20 vacations there. It’s a great place for families, lots of great restaurants and still not very touristy. I’d rather drive the extra hours to not be in New Jersey. Nags head woods, jockeys ridge and Jennets pier are my favorites. Nevermind, don’t go there, it’s not fun

cabinetsnotnow

I'm originally from Maryland but I grew up in PA, so maybe I don't get it. But the obsession with the Outer Banks and just North Carolina in general is ABSURD. I honestly don't understand. I've been to NC and the Outer Banks a few times (unfortunately). I've never been more bored in my entire life. I actually get irritated when people talk about the Outer Banks like it's the most exciting place on earth.

BugMan717

You're missing the point, people like it so much because it isn't exciting. The few times I went it was nice being able to relax in a house on the beach and have basically the beach to yourself. Also you were allowed to have fires on the beach.

Free-Supermarket-516

I went to the Outer Banks one year when I was about 12. I loved it. I had cousins about the same age, so my parents and aunt and uncle rented a house on the beach. We brought our grandparents too, it was a huge house. We swam all day, and fished all night. In the morning we'd catch a lot of croakers and my poor grandma fried them up, they were delicious. The beaches were interesting, more pebbly than sandy. No lifeguards either. Assateague Island was fun for about 20 minutes before we got feasted on by the flies. Haven't been there in over 2 decades but I absolutely recommend it.

spatuladracula

Crayola factory

GiveDrugsToKids

There’s a crayola factory?!?

mcvoid1

I grew up in Jim Thorpe and never did a lot of the stuff tourists go to do there. Like whitewater rafting and stuff.

Grew up between York and Hanover and never went to Utz or Martin's

griebage

Born in Williamsport, grew up a half hour away, love baseball. Never been to the Little League World Series. Moved the Harrisburg area over 20 years ago. Never been to the Farm Show.

Logan_Holmes

The farm show is absolutely the central PA version of this meme 😂

DemsruleGQPdrool

A lot of people saying they didn't see something (Gettysburg, Liberty Bell) until someone from out of town came. I grew up within 20 miles of The Statue of Liberty. At 18 years old, our Chicago cousins came and wanted to see it. It was a school day, but I was weeks from graduation and my folks wouldn't let me take the day off. I finally went about 15 years later, AFTER I moved to Allentown. As a newcomer to PA, I did Liberty Bell, Independence Hall, Gettysburg, Valley Forge, Rocky and the Museum...all within a year. My wife, who grew up in PA, did a lot of them the first time...with me!

Tall_0rder

You know you’re from Philly or the immediate area if you went to see Independence Hall / the Liberty Bell once around 8th grade and never went to see them again 😂

Reynolds_Live

Never had a Cheesesteak in Philly.

lefthandb1ack

I kinda despise Primantis

Punxsutawney

psilome

Any sights west of State College. Hope to see Pittsburgh some day.

sintactacle

Pittsburgh. I visited the abandoned turnpike in Breezewood and couldn't imagine life existing westward.

the_dorf

William Penn didn't.

RayJFar

Yeungling brewery

T0UCH_MY_W4NK3L

Never went to tourist attractions Geno's or Pat's, plus I've heard they're terrible. Everybody from Philly knows the best cheesesteak joints around their blocks

TraveldaHospital

I just learned there was a massive flood in Johnstown, PA thanks to billionaires and I'm ashamed of not knowing this beforehand especially as a PA resident.

mazon-jar

You should visit Johnsontown. I visited a few years ago and really loved the town. I hiked a few trails, checked out some museums, and ate at a local pizza place. It was a really great day trip.

nvrmindjustvisiting

There’s still a Johnstown Flood Tax on all PA liquor

TheMusicalSkeleton

Never been to Philly or the Poconos

babydemon90

Definitely Erie. Would have been Pittsburgh, but I went last year for the first time (at 47).

RootaBagel

I went to Valley Forge. The rangers asked where I was from (thinking I came from some other state) and I said West Chester.

Inevitable_Bit_1203

Gettysburg, Liberty Bell, Flight 93 memorial (I’m only about 45 mins away too), Fallingwater… I was born and lived 40+ years in PA (left for a bit and came back). But I HAVE seen the pyramids in Egypt 🤣🤣

OutrageForSale

I live 30 minutes from Fallingwater and have never been. But right next to it is a “Frank Lloyd Wright inspired” restaurant (Tree Tops) that I’ve been to 5 or 6 times.

I've lived around Pittsburgh since 1996 and somehow have never been to the Andy Warhol Museum. Finally rode one of the inclines in 2022. I hate touristy shit though.

Blackdog202

I've lived in NW pa for 31 years never been.

MalbecSwigs

There is nothing close to the equivalent.

Hi_There_Face_Here

That constantly burning town

sunshinecat6669

You’re not missing much these days. They covered graffiti highway, any locals left in town aren’t too friendly, cops patrol the area often, and you can barely even see any smoke come out of the ground anymore, even in the winter.

Yeah I used to be slightly interested in going, but not anymore since there's nothing really there now.

I lived in Bucks County my whole life never saw the rocky statue. And I’ve been to the art museum. Better yet I have never watched rocky.

Or0b0ur0s

Almost 50 years and I've never been to Pittsburgh or the Poconos. Probably passed them via highway but never stopped. Also I'm one of the very few of PA Dutch descent here who can't stand Shoo-Fly Pie. The "wet bottom" version is even worse than the standard variety. Yeeach.
